Silenced
Madeleine kissed him on the cheek. “A lot of patients today; I’ll be home late.” She lingered next to him at the kitchen counter, sipping the coffee he had made her.
Mathilde, on the sofa, ate her scrambled eggs on toast voraciously while she watched cartoons. One of Q’s naked cats butted its head against her plate and she tutted at it. “Non, c’est moi.”
Q walked in the front door, home from the night shift, and hung his work bag on its hook.
“Q!” Mathilde called, as she always did.
“Hello, little cabbage,” Q answered, as he always did.
Bond curled a hand around Q’s neck, kissed him, embraced him.
Q relaxed in Bond’s arms and was smirking tiredly when he showed his face again. “Long night, but a longer one for my opponents.”
“I suppose someone has to be causing trouble if this one is guarding the home front,” Madeleine teased. She leaned warmly against his side, where he’d had the injury that retired him.
On Safin’s island, Bond smiled and kept his eyes closed. The bombs would fall any moment; there would be no injury, but at least he had a nice fantasy to go out on.

After watching No Time to Die, what I really need in my life is a fic where Safin wins, and he ends up keeping Bond and Madeline captive, tormenting them for fun while he raises Mathilde to be his successor

Mathilde still owns the sweater her father gave her on Safin's island. For years, she slept with it and once she grew too old for that, she's kept it in her closet. It was the only thing she had of his for a long time.

Safin has no plan.
He had one. He just didn't explain it, to reduce any chance of Bond foiling it.
Bond's death is confusingly overwrought and silly. Is he really mortally wounded? Is he committing suicide because of the nanobots; he's not even going to try to find a workaround? Does he have no choice but to sacrifice himself?
Maybe, no, and no.
Remember, the nanobots transfer and reproduce infinitely until they find their target and anyone who gets near them. Bond has absolutely no way to get away and get help without risking Madeline and Mathilde.
There's rumors that it was originally a weaponized virus before COVID, which would explain why he presumably can't EMP himself.
Also, she was obviously his kid, come on. Why bother frontin'? For extra drama?
Why is it so important that the naval bombardment happens right now? They're the British Navy--they can't just seize these cargo ships full of bioweapons that everyone's so scared of?
The entire operation was already incredibly shady and possibly illegal. That's what 00s are for, really. It's a lot easier to just destroy the bioweapons instead of trying to capture them.
Especially when any nation would give their eyeteeth for a programmable bioweapon. They also need to cover up the UK's involvement.
Incidentally, the Ministry of Defense worked with the film's production.
scientist death
Yeah, that was stupid.
He was just a generic unsympathetic white Eastern European dude. The closest he gets to having a single sympathetic trait is when we learn his coworkers prank him. Like l2, except at least Boris was a good friend of Natalya, could be determined, and was pretty charismatic (because Alan Cumming).
Also, killing people in cold-blood is, again, what 00s are really for. Naomi had to decide between dragging him along (which would probably get her or both of them killed), or denying the enemy resources so she could finish the rest of the mission.
I don't have a problem with the broad strokes, but why racism? Why is he such an unlikeable jerk? Were they trying to avoid making him like Boris?
Fix Point 2: This sounds an awful lot like MGSV.
Which is not necessarily a bad thing.
Fix Point 3: Nomi needs an arc.
Some endpoint where she realizes what it really means to be a 00 (IE murder). I think the original film's works fine, if it weren't for the racism angle. But I don't see any room for it in your version.
Maybe she could bicker with Bond throughout the movie about the need for Heracles, or whether she should even care about justifying it. In your ending, she knows he's right, deep down, but she follows orders for the Greater Good™.
Heck, maybe she has a catchphrase, "realpolitik".
Which she uses just before she fights Bond.
So we'd have a fight where both of them are trying to use Bond-style clever takedowns on each other, while Bond is also fighting off the Marines.
Of course, I doubt the MOD would be okay with the Marines being the unequivocal bad guys.
Tumblr media
I think it's fair to say that by the finale, No Time To Die is a complete mess. To wit:
It makes no sense why MI-6 would send two OO agents (one retired) to storm an enemy compound and not the Royal Marines.
Safin has no plan.
Bond's death is confusingly overwrought and silly. Is he really mortally wounded? Is he committing suicide because of the nanobots; he's not even going to try to find a workaround? Does he have no choice but to sacrifice himself? Why is it so important that the naval bombardment happens right now? They're the British Navy--they can't just seize these cargo ships full of bioweapons that everyone's so scared of?
That one scientist declaring he hates black people and then getting killed in cold blood by a black government agent who yells "It's time to die!" is almost schizophrenically dumb--as we all know, civil rights don't apply to bad people--but, you know, pick your battles)
Here are my fixes.
Bond and Nomi aren't the only attackers, they're just sneaking in to lower the defenses from the inside so the Royal Marines can get in and take on Safin's private army. They did this all the time back in the day--including in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, which NTTD hugely references--so I see no reason why Eon can't mount a large-scale battle sequence today.
Safin's plan--as he, of course, explains to Bond--is that he blames pretty much the entire world for collaborating with and enabling Blofeld. Either by being outright under his influence, as is the case with the national leaders and wealthy who were part of Spectre--or by being even average citizens who tolerated corrupt governments and the One Percent. His plan was to demonstrate the efficiency of Hercules on Spectre and then kick off a biological arms race among world governments as everyone scrambles for either Hercules or a counter for Hercules. This will kill millions as Hercules is used, then retaliated against, ad nauseum. It's inevitable. Even now, Nomi is no doubt under orders from M to secure Hercules for further development by the British government. "The bigger picture," Bond mutters, remembering Le Chiffre telling him that he could get away with torturing and killing him.
Bond realizes Safin is right--and kills him, natch--and decides he can't allow ANYONE to take possession of Hercules. It is simply too dangerous a weapon for even his own government to have. He sets the base to self-destruct and defends the control room from the Royal Marines who are now trying to take him out to stop the countdown. Would it be too cynical to give him a 'old versus young' showdown with Nomi? Personally, I think it'd be a better final fight than Bond taking on one tiny nerd, but what do I know? At any rate, M orders the Marines to pull out at the last minute and Bond is presumed killed in the blast, which irrevocably destroys Hercules and all knowledge of how to recreate it.
M is, naturally, pissed about Bond's last act of defiance, but still toasts him and respectfully declares 'Well-played, 007.' We'll leave it ambiguous as to whether Bond actually died or if he survives to reunite with Madelaine, now having completely severed himself from MI-6.

Gotta love how James and Madeleine are lost in their own world and each other’s lips, and Mathilde is just fed up with it - can we go home already - and give a quick machine spin to Doudou - not that I don’t appreciate the rescue - but this iron smell on him is yucky?
Btw this right here is the birth of her trademark face, when in ten years time her parents will keep the PDAs at a disgusting level in front of her schoolmates.

Tumblr media
Mathilde was born to Dr. Madeleine Swann in London on a rainy September day, beautiful and healthy and looking so much like her father. She was raised by her mother in a comfortable townhouse in London, enjoying the best education and all her mother's unconditional love. From a young age, Mathilde was aware that her father wasn't in her life and she asked her mother question upon question about him. Realising that secrets and lies would only hurt her daughter more than the truth, Madeleine told her the truth as best she could. And so Madeleine grew up believing her father to be dead.
Until one day when she was five years old, while on a trip to her mother's house in Norway, Mathilde saw her father for the first time, very much alive. Despite the whirlwind of confusion and fear in Mathilde's five year-old mind, she instantly felt a strong connection to this strange but so familiar man. And she promised herself she would never let anyone take her father away from her again.
However, this time, it was Mathilde who was taken. When Lyutsifer Safin kidnapped her, she tried to stay as strong and fearless as she knew her parents would be. Because there was no doubt in her mind that they would come for her.
And they did. Reunited with her parents once again, Mathilde was desperate to escape from Safin and that godforsaken island. She vividly remembers stepping into that boat and watching her father return inside the facility. She could feel the fear in her mother and Mathilde asked for her father, over and over again. Once at a safe distance, Mathilde searched the horizon for her father's boat. What happened next is still a blur in her memory.
She remembers hearing the rockets approach, the deafening explosions as the island was hit. She remembers screaming for her father. Helicopters arrived, agents sweeping her off her feet, her mother crying. And once again, Mathilde believed her father to be dead, and this time the image was burned into her mind.
The face of Lyutsifer Safin haunted Mathilde's nightmares for years to come, leaving her drenched in cold sweat and screaming her father's name in the middle of the night. Madeleine did her best to help her daughter, but the trauma of Safin's island never went away.
It wasn't until Mathilde was twelve years old that the awful, heartbreaking truth emerged from the shadows: James Bond wasn't dead. He had been infected with a modified version of Heracles, the nanotechnology that could kill with a single touch. Modified so that it would kill only Mathilde and Madeleine. Bond had survived the explosions, escaping the island just in time, and then chosen to go into voluntary isolation in a blacksite of MI6 until a way to disarm the nanotechnology could be found. It had taken seven years, but finally Q Branch had found a way to filter Heracles from Bond's blood.
But the trauma of the events on Safin's island and the years spent trying to process it all had taken a toll on Mathilde. She refused to see or speak to James for four more years, angry about the lies and the pain they made her suffer through. The first time Mathilde ever spoke to her father again was on her 16th birthday, when she told him he needed to sign off on her joining the Royal Navy if he ever wanted her back in his life again. And so he did.
Mathilde spent six years in the Royal Navy, earning a name for herself at a rapid pace: authority issues, impulsiveness, undying loyalty and a slight penchant for self-sacrifice. She showed extreme promise, excelling at almost every task given to her and eventually rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
When the time came to sign on for four more years, Mathilde was approached by MI6, who had been keeping an eye on the Bond legacy for a long time. While Mathilde's goal had always been to outrank her father, she decided that in the end, joining MI6 was inevitable for her so why delay the process? She left the Navy and joined MI6 as an agent in training.
By this time, Mathilde's relationship with her father, despite being rocky at first, had improved greatly. He'd been offered the position of M a few years after being cured of the Heracles infection and had been running the department ever since. He supported her decision to join MI6, unlike Madeleine, and made sure to meddle in her training as little as possible, knowing that she was determined to succeed on her own strength instead of on her father's legacy.
And yet again, Mathilde proved herself beyond capable. Excelling at training, and causing trouble wherever she went, it was obvious from the start that the Bond legacy would continue with her. She began to specialise in honeypot missions, skillfully extracting information, assets and materials from targets through deception, seduction and a hint of intimidation. When she was 29, she was given her first kill mission: to kill a double agent in Moscow who was about to hand over top secret documents to the Kremlin. Despite an initial hiccup, she performed masterfully. Two years later, the second assassination followed: a SPECTRE infiltrator who had recently gotten engaged to a powerful politician within the EU. After completing this mission, Mathilde was officially given double-oh status and given her father's , infamous code number, 007, at her request. And thus breaking her father's record of youngest double-oh in MI6 history.
However, if Mathilde thought her life was finally as it should be, she was very mistaken. Barely eight weeks after becoming 007 and a mere week after her birthday, her father was brutally assassinated while on his way home from work. This time, his death was truly final and Mathilde was the one to identify his bullet-riddled body. Despite MI6's best efforts, no killer was ever found, having seemingly disappeared into thin air. This brazen attack on the UK's secret service caused a snowball effect of investigations and commissions, and when all of it was over a year later, nothing of the world Mathilde knew was left. M branch made obsolete, Q branch restructured and Mathilde discharged after an internal review that was more about keeping her silent and out of the way than about her skills and missions.
And so, at the age of barely 34, Mathilde had gone from a rising star within her father's world of espionage to a bitter and disillusioned young woman spat out by the country she had served for almost two decades. Together with her mother, she moved to Paris and found the only other way to put her years of training to good use: as a gun for hire. With her extraordinary skills and knowledge, it wasn't hard to sell herself to the highest bidder, carrying out honeypot missions, extractions and assassinations for cartels, rogue nations, black ops branches of intelligence services, and generally anyone who needed a job done.
She became known as 'la femme masquée' for donning the broken mask her greatest nightmare Safin had once worn. A twisted and bitter reference to the man's quest for vengeance that shaped her at an early age. Because anyone powerful enough to know her and her work, also knows this: that she will find the people responsible for her father's death and she will have her pound of flesh. No matter what it takes.

“No Time to Die” review:
Short answer:
It was a fitting end to Daniel Craig’s era of James Bond, even with its shortcomings. 8/10.
For the more detailed answer
What I liked:
1) While Madeleine Swann didn’t really stand out in “Spectre”, she definitely got her moment to shine in “No Time to Die”. At this point, she’s definitely the modern Tracy Bond and I’m fine with that.
2) All the throwbacks to the classic Bond movies. Even though this is still the dark, gritty, modern Bond, this was also the closest the Craig movies have gotten to replicating the campy, classic Bond flicks. You have a secret island lair for the main villain, a plot to destroy the world, and supervillains with weird gimmicks (the eyeball guy).
3) I actually liked Bond being a dad. It’s a logical plot development given how promiscuous Bond is and how he and Madeleine were madly in love.
4) Bond dying made sense for the story. Since a point was made about how 00 agents tend to have a short lifespan, it makes sense that at some point, Bond’s luck just simply ran out. It’s tough to accept since this is James Bond we’re talking about, but it makes sense within the context of the story.
5) Out of the five Daniel Craig movies, I’ll say that this is the one where Craig’s performance really shines through. I think it’s because the material here is a lot more emotional, especially since this is Craig’s last outing as Bond. It definitely feels like the script was written with that in mind, as if the creators wanted Craig to really stretch his acting muscles out for this part one last time.
6) Ana de Armas’ role was short, but fun. That’s all.
7) Fight scenes were great, especially the staircase scene.
What I’m mixed about:
1) Nomi was fine...as a side character. If she’s supposed to be the new 007, then I don’t think the movie did a good job setting her up as Bond’s successor. She spends most of the time whining about Bond and being petty. Then there’s the fact that there wasn’t a clear “passing of the torch” moment and that she gave James his 007 number back. So for now, I’m choosing to believe that Nomi isn’t the new 007 because if she is, then the movie failed in setting that plot point up.
2) Q was cool, but underused. But it’s nice that it was confirmed he was LGBT and that the movie didn’t make a big deal out of it. Continuing with this point, Moneypenny and M were also pretty underused.
3) The plot was easy to follow, but there were definitely moments that left me scratching my head. My biggest gripe about the plot would have to be the jumps in what the villain plot was at the moment. At first, it’s Blofeld being petty. Then, it’s Safin being petty. Then, it’s Safin wanting to blow up the world because...why? The plot was fine overall, but there were still a few clunky sections.
4) Billie Eilish’s Bond theme, which I heard for the first time in theaters. It’s definitely better than Sam Smith’s song but it’s not a “You Know My Name” or “Skyfall”. So...average Bond theme.
What I didn’t like:
1) Rami Malek did great as Lyutsifer Safin but the character himself was...confusing? I feel like the creators weren’t sure what to do with Safin, so they just gave him all the possible villain motivations they could think of. He wants vengeance because of childhood trauma, he’s written to be James Bond’s dark mirror, and he wants to blow up the world just because he can. Like, it’s bad when I’m watching the movie and, instead of feeling threatened by the villain, I’m questioning why he’s acting this way.
2) Since this is supposed to be Craig’s last outing, it feels wrong that the main villain wasn’t Blofeld. And yes, I know that Blofeld is in the movie, but he’s only the main threat for the first half. Given that I wasn’t a huge fan of how Safin was written, I feel like the creators should’ve just made Blofeld the main threat. There was literally no need for Safin, especially since Safin doesn’t have enough of a connection to Bond to make him a satisfying final rival.
3) Safin kidnapped the daughter, made a big deal about how he could kill her and everything...then he just lets her go. And for no reason either, he didn’t have a trap or anything set up. So...why let the girl go?
