Saint Hubert
656-727 Feast day: November 3 Patronage: hunters, mathematicians, opticians, metalworkers
Saint Hubert or Hubertus was passionately devoted to hunting. While chasing a stag on a Good Friday morning, he received a vision of a crucifix between the animal’s antlers. A voice warned him,“Hubert, unless you turn to the Lord, and lead a holy life, you shall quickly go down to hell.” It was a conversion experience for Hubert. After his wife died he became a priest and later a bishop working passionately for Our Lord.

i've never seen anyone point this out before so i might as well be the one to explain. behold my ted talk on the symbolism of names in the index
first, the proxies: their names all follow a theme of faith and illumination
esther: derived from "stāra", meaning "star". jewish origin. sometimes associated with the babylonian goddess ishtar. i'll also note that this name carries motifs of concealment, as the bibilical queen esther assumed this name to hide her true identity + "The three letter root of Esther in Hebrew is s-t-r (סתר‎), "hide, conceal" (as stated on wikipedia please don't get on my ass for poor citing practices this isn't college). notice how esther hides his face more than any named other named index member
hubert: -bert is derived from "beraht", meaning "bright". also carries some religious associations (i.e., saint hubertus/hubert). also note that saint hubert was the patron saint of many things including metalworking. what does hubert have on his face that may or may not be related to that? a large metal reinforcement
gloria: derived from "glory". self explanatory
it certainly fits, seeing how the index is a religious cult-like syndicate which also distinguishes itself with imagery that suggests light (i.e. the gold, white, and bright blue motifs) or perhaps a lack of it (like how the proselytes are required to blindfold themselves to symbolize their reliance on the prescripts and their superiors to illuminate a path for them). the proxies have proven their faith and they've devoted themselves to their cause. it's evident in every aspect of their lives, from their dogmas to their appearances to even their names
next, moirai. there's nothing to be shared or explained here that isn't common knowledge already, though i will point out that she continues the faith-based naming convention, seeing how her name is derived from greek mythology. though, there's no notion of light... perhaps because she's been stationed underground?
lastly, yan. initially i had some trouble with his name since there isn't a single particular root it can be traced to. first, i noticed that yan happens to be a masculine variation of "john" in hebrew, meaning "god is gracious". that definitely fits the naming convention, but i can't say it really feels much like him. but after a little more digging i found the perfect match: 硯 (yàn), meaning "inkstone"
Tumblr media
which, like some other details such as his calligraphy hobby, subtly foreshadows his fate. though, this interpretation strays from the religious theme. yan is also the only character here to (at least partially) break this pattern that symbolizes the index's ethos. it wouldn't be the only time he defied its will, no?

Jacques-Albert Senave - View of the pont Rouge and the tips of the islands of Saint-Louis and the Cité - 1791
oil on canvas, height: 73 cm (28.7 in); width: 92 cm (36.2 in)
Musée Carnavalet, city of Paris, Musée de la Ville de Paris
Jacques-Albert Senave (1758–1823) was a Flemish painter mainly active in Paris during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He is known for his genre scenes, history paintings, landscapes, city views, market scenes and portraits.
He was born as the son of a baker on 12 September 1758 in Lo, then in the Austrian Netherlands. He began his artistic training with the encouragement of Mr. Hennekin, a canon at the abbey of his native town who had seen his drawings. The canon egged on his parents to send him to study at the academy in Dunkirk. As his family was poor, he was sent to a baker in Dunkirk whom he was to assist in the bakery during the day, so that he could practice his art at the academy in the evenings. As gradually he had to spend more time working in the bakery, his art studies suffered and he returned to live with his parents. He was able to resume his studies in Dunkirk with the financial support of a Mr. Truit who was one of his teachers at the academy. After graduating from the academy of Dunkirk he followed Mr. Truit to Saint-Omer where the latter had been appointed a teacher at the local school of drawing. After a year in Saint-Omer, Mr. Hennekin procured for him a commission to decorate a pavilion in his hometown Lo which Mr. Hennekin (who was also an architect) had designed for a local family.
The money earned from this commission allowed Senave to travel to Paris in 1780. Here he continued his studies at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture for a few months until his money ran out. He returned to his hometown where he worked on local commissions for religious institutions and local dignitaries. Through contacts of his patron the abbot Hennekin he was admitted as a student in the academy of Ypres. In Ypres he was also introduced to prominent art lovers. The bishop of Ypres Felix Josephus Hubertus de Wavrans became his patron. Senave painted portraits and other subjects for the bishop.
His earnings allowed him to return to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in Paris where he obtained third prize in drawing and later second prize in life drawing. In Paris he also received training from his fellow Flemish painter Joseph-Benoît Suvée. He started to sell small genre paintings in the Flemish style which earned him some success. He married and had a son who followed in his father's footsteps and became a painter. The son died at age 22 and as a result of the grief over this early death, the wife of Senave died not long after.
He developed an interest in poetry and wrote poems in French and Dutch. He regularly contributed his paintings to the Salons in Paris.
After donating to the Painting Academy of Ypres a painting depicting Rembrandt in his workshop (destroyed during World War I), Senave was appointed Honorary Director of the Academy in 1821. His donated work formed the beginning of the art collection of the City Museum of Ypres. He also received the honor of being made an honorary member of the Royal Society of Fine Arts and Literature of Ghent. In his later years his right side was paralyzed and he learned to draw with his left hand. However, he could no longer paint. He later married a second time with the woman who took care of him during his final years.
Senave died in Paris in 1823.

WHEN ANTONIN SCALIA WAS FOUND dead at Cibolo Creek Ranch in a remote area of West Texas, officials said then that Scalia was there at the invitation of the ranch’s owner, John Poindexter.
Most of his companions, numbering a dozen or so, were not publicly identified.
Would you believe us that it was because they are members of a centuries-old, all-male, secret society of elite hunters?
It emerged Wednesday that among those people, however, were, in fact, members of a centuries-old all-male secret society of elite hunters, known as the International Order of St. Hubertus, the Washington Post reported. Scalia himself does not appear to have been a member, though the Post reported that Poindexter and C. Allan Foster, a prominent lawyer, held leadership positions in the group. Foster had traveled by private plane to the ranch with Scalia.
Scalia spent the night of February 12th with Foster, Poindexter and others at the ranch, eating dinner with Poindexter before retiring to bed and later dying in his sleep. It’s unclear what ties Scalia had to the order, though Poindexter said that he had “no connection” to the group.
“There is nothing I can add to your observation that among my many guests at Cibolo Creek Ranch over the years some members of the International Order of St. Hubertus have been numbered,” Poindexter tells the Washington Post. “I am aware of no connection between that organization and Justice Scalia.”
The ranch, known for its remoteness and discretion, would be appear to be a good fit for the secretive order, which was founded in 1695 by Count Franz Anton von Sporck in the Kingdom of Bohemia, or what is now the Czech Republic, according to its website, which also outlines a colorful history for the all-male group.
The order was banned by Hitler in Germany after refusing to accept Nazis as members, their website says, also claiming that members of the order hunted food for rural populations in Austria during World War II, “avoiding not only famine but helping to save the country to falling behind the Iron Curtain.”
The order appears to touch on many of Scalia’s interests, which included not just hunting but also opera.
“Count von Sporck was also a prominent patron of music, having commissioned numerous Vivaldi operas and the four Bach minor Masses for performance at his private Opera House in Prague,” the order’s website says.
The order is named for St. Hubertus, the patron saint of hunters, as well opticians, mathematicians, and metalworkers. Its motto is “Deum Diligite Animalia Diligentes,” which translates to “Honoring God by honoring His creatures.”
The United States chapter of the order was established in 1966 at San Francisco’s Bohemian Club, which hosts Bohemian Grove, one of the most famous secret societies in the world.
The ranch, which has also hosted other politicians and public figures over the years, including Mick Jagger, has hosted the group before.
In 2010, CultureMap Houston reported, the ranch hosted 53 members for a hunting expedition.
“Poindexter reports that some of the players went so far as to dress in traditional European shooting attire for the boxed bird shoot competition and for the driven pheasant and chukar shoot, highlight of the sporting events,” CultureMap Houston said.

This vintage name for baby boys is of Old German origin and means "bright or shining intellect." It blends the "heart" and "mind" meanings of the word hug with berht, meaning "bright" or "famous." Hubert takes after Saint Hubertus, an eighth-century patron saint of hunters, mathematicians, and metalworkers. Tumblr media
Walter

Meaning: Commander of the army
Walter is a boy’s name of Germanic origins. It derives from the Old High German Walthari, which is composed of the root words walt—”power”—and hari—”warrior.” Together, these create Walter’s meaning, “commander of the army.” This authoritative meaning will undoubtedly imbue baby Walter with a penchant for leadership and decisiveness. While Walter has been popular throughout history, it is notably underused in modern times, and makes for a fashionably retro choice for baby.

This striking name is one that leaves an impression and has an air of built-in mystery.

The vision of saint Hubert by Franz Von stuck 1890
St. Hubert is also known as St. Hubertus. A married courtier with a passion for hunting
Legend holds that on a Good Friday morning, while the faithful were in church, Hubert was hunting in the forest. As he pursued a magnificent stag or hart, the animal turned and Hubert was astounded to see a crucifix floating between its antlers. He heard a voice saying: "Hubert unless thou turnest to the Lord and leadest a holy life, thou shalt quickly go down into Hell." Hubert dismounted and prostrated himself, and after asking "Lord, what wouldst Thou have me do?" is told, "Go and seek Lambert, and he will instruct you.
He is known as the patron saint of hunters, dogs, and archers. Among sport hunters he is credited as the source of ethical hunting behavior. He is recognized as the 1st bishop of Liege, and was a evangelistic bishop reaching out to the pagans along the Ardennes Forest
