Tuckamonna. Nowwooyowwitt. Their Marks.

Sakonnet, Wampanoag. Their homelands in the southeastern part of so-called Rhode Island; in and around the place called “Little Compton” Comrades of Awashonks, identified with others on this land deed document a “Sachems of Succonott.”

Signed May, 1674, for “Sacconnott and the parts adjacent.” Seen at the Massachusetts Historical Society.

Very little could be found about Tuckamonna and Nowwooyowitt. Please comment below if you know more or can recommend resources to check!

Just a (little, ha) crafty project I'd been working on for a while. I made this for my BFF Janine, just because. It was something I found in the cross stitching stuff her mom (Sue, who recently passed) gave to me when they were cleaning out Janine's Grandma Grace's things. It looked like Gracie was going to start it but she hadn't, so I figured I'd give it a go. It was pretty fiddly, what with the silver threads, and very small fabric, but it turned out really nice. And my friend who helped with the framing did an excellent job.

Awashonks. Awawsuncks. Her Mark. 

Sachem of the Sakonnet. Her home there, near Narragansett Bay and Patuxet, in and around the place known today as Little Compton, Rhode Island. Created a hopeful alliance with colonizers at Plimoth to spare her people from enslavement during and after King Philip’s War. Endured the dispossession of lands and several attempts by colonizers to usurp her role as leader at Sakonnet. 

Some of her kin (also appearing on this document): Samponock (alias Amos), Wawwooyowwitt, Soonchas (identified as her son). Names spelled as they appear. 

This deed for Sakonnet land, signed May 23, 1674. Seen @ Massachusetts Historical Society.
