Wake up, Little Compton
Adeline Slicer House (1887) still looks about the same as in 2003. (Photo by David Brussat.) Little Compton’s town council will soon receive advice from this corner that was good when originally delivered in 2003, in my Journal column of Aug. 28 of that year as part of my “Outside Providence” series. The series looked at efforts in the other 38 cities and towns to maintain their historical…

On December 23, 1848 (two days before their planned Christmas Day wedding), Poe and (Sarah Helen) Whitman were sitting in an Athenæum alcove when an unnamed messenger handed her a note that told her Poe had broken his promise of sobriety and had been drinking both the night before and that morning. Whitman immediately called off the wedding, rushed back to her house, drenched her handkerchief in ether, threw herself on the sofa, and attempted to lose herself in unconsciousness.
Now that's a level of dramatic that few people ever achieve.

Again September's golden day, Serenely still, intensely bright, Fades on the umbered hills away, And melts into the coming night. Again Moshassuck's silver tide Reflects each green herb on its side, Each tasselled wreath and tangling vine Whose tendrils o'er its margin twine.
And, standing on its velvet shore, Where yesternight with thee I stood, I trace its devious course once more, Far winding on through vale and wood. Now glimmering through you golden mist, By the last glinting sunbeams kissed, Now lost where lengthening shadows fall From hazel-copse and moss-fringed wall.
Near where you rocks the stream inurn The lonely gentian blossoms still, Still wave the star-flower and the fern O'er the soft outline of the hill; While far aloft, where pine-trees throw Their shade athwart the sunset glow, Thin vapors cloud the illumined air, And parting daylight lingers there.
But, ah, no longer thou art near This varied loveliness to see, And I, though fondly lingering here, To-night can only think on thee;— The flowers thy gentle hand caressed Still lie unwithered on my breast, And still thy footsteps print the shore Where thou and I may rove no more.
Again I hear the murmuring fall Of water from some distant dell, The beetle's hum, the cricket's call, And, far away, that evening bell,— Again, again those sounds I hear, But, oh, how desolate and drear They seem to-night,—how like a knell The music of that evening bell!
Again the new moon in the west, Scarce seen upon you golden sky, Hangs o'er the mountain's purple crest With one pale planet trembling night,— And beautiful her pearly light As when we blessed its beams last night, But thou art on the far blue sea, And I can only think of thee.

Was Pym's story about Ultima Thule a reference to Longfellow and/ or theosophy (the hollow earth and the giant were in the book iirc) or was Pym into some weird esoteric nazi stuff? Because they've co-opted a lot that.
"Ultima Thule" is the name of the most celebrated image of Edgar Allan Poe that exists today:
Tumblr media
Sarah Helen Whitman coined the name “Ultima Thule” for this famous daguerreotype, from Poe’s poem “Dream-Land”:
“I have reached these lands but newly From an ultimate dim Thule — From a wild weird clime that lieth, sublime Out of SPACE — out of TIME.”
"Ultima Thule" is Latin and means “extreme limits of travel and discovery.” The hollow earth and all of that were taken directly from Poe's The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, and were popular theories back in the 1800s, which I'm sure is why Poe included them. But no, no weird esoteric nazi stuff, but I'm amazed and disturbed that people still take those insane, debunked, old theories so seriously today.

I love to wander through the woodlands hoary In the soft light of an autumnal day, When Summer gathers up her robes of glory, And like a dream of beauty glides away.
How through each loved, familiar path she lingers, Serenely smiling through the golden mist, Tinting the wild grape with her dewy fingers Till the cool emerald turns to amethyst;
Kindling the faint stars of the hazel, shining To light the gloom of autumn's mouldering halls, With hoary plumes the clematis entwining Where o'er the rock her withered garland falls.
Warm lights are on the sleepy uplands waning Beneath soft clouds along the horizon rolled, Till the slant sunbeams through their fringes raining Bathe all the hills in melancholy gold.
The moist winds breathe of crisped leaves and flowers In the damp hollows of the woodland sown, Mingling the freshness of autumnal showers With spicy airs from cedarn alleys blown.
Beside the brook and on the umbered meadow, Where yellow fern-tufts fleck the faded ground, With folded lids beneath their palmy shadow The gentian nods, in dewy slumbers bound.
Upon those soft, fringed lids the bee sits brooding, Like a fond lover loath to say farewell, Or with shut wings, through silken folds intruding, Creeps near her heart his drowsy tale to tell.
The little birds upon the hillside lonely Flit noiselessly along from spray to spray, Silent as a sweet wandering thought that only Shows its bright wings and softly glides away.
A Still Day in Autumn by Sarah Helen Whitman

"I cannot write to you the calm, cold language of a world which I loathe, of a world in which I have no interest, of a world which is not mine. I repeat to you that my heart is broken, that I have no farther object in life; that I have absolutely no wish but to die."
- Edgar Allan Poe in his letter to Sarah Helen Whitman
