The Smith's third album The Queen Is Dead was released 16 June 1986.

The iconic inner-sleeve image of Morrissey, Marr, Rourke and Joyce outside The Salford Lads Club was taken by Stephen Wright, a young, skint photographer on a cold, dismal November afternoon in 1985.

Wright had previously photographed The Smiths at The Free Trade Hall in March 1984. He climbed the light rigging and took 36 shots - one roll of film- and then walked home after the gig as he had no money for the bus. But the images impressed Morrissey and Rough Trade Records called him to shoot the band for the album.

At the time, Wright’s dark room was his bedroom in a house he shared with friends in Longsight and his chemicals were kept in Corona pop bottles.  He was so excited to meet the band that he could not sleep the night before the shoot.

They met at Piccadilly Station and Salford Lads Club was the first location they visited.  The light was fading. (They went on to try shots at the Arndale Centre and in front of the tiled map of Lancashire at Victoria Station, but found them too dark.)

No entourage, no hairdresser, make-up artist, assistant, lights or reflectors. Just one fan, one Nikon FE camera and five rolls of film.

One of those moments is now in the National Portrait Gallery.
