“Fred and the rest of ‘the best damned door-to-door sales team’ have always had a knack for getting into trouble, but now that they've witnessed supernatural forces first-hand, they can't help but spot monsters, ghosts, and foul ne'er-do-wells wherever they go. Case in point, they've stumbled upon an infestation of otherworldly goblins in Hopkinsville, who are driving the townsfolk to murder! Just How Archaic Must Be With Melissa F. Olson's Latest Comic Book Project?
December is looking primed for the return of the gods in @AhoyComicMags upcoming release of Archaic! Info and teaser artwork at:
Ahoy Comics isn’t getting Archaic with this self-titled release where it concerns a sentient island taking care of its own residents. When they were once revered in the legends and lore from worlds long gone, or perhaps even forgotten, I can’t wait for December 4, 2024 to arrive. On paper, this idea sounds like what Fantasy Island wanted to become before it went off air. I never bothered with the…

The Vorpal Almanac (2023) is also not what I would call a traditional monster book, but in the spirit of deconstruction and recontexualization that has run through this week’s posts, I think we can extend it some leeway.
It’s a collaboration between Levi Combs (words) and Sally Cantirino (art) and I love it a lot. It is unambiguous: a collection of 22 unique swords, an illustration (a portrait of the weapon and a previous owner) and flavorful quote on one half of the spread, a brief history and mechanical notation on the other half. An appendix consisting of a few tables allows for customization or the creation of new blades. Elegant. There are a lot of interesting weapons here (and skeletal owners, worth noting) but I think my favorite is Stormclaw, which can sometimes shoot out a bolt of lightning and acts as a lightning rod protecting the wielder from electrical attacks. There are probably more interesting blades in the book, but I like how Stormclaw feels unique and storied through the combination of a name, unusual magical properties and a brief and somewhat unremarkable history. More (all?) magic items should have at least this much individuality.
Monsters, though? Sure. Named swords of special history go back probably as far as swords themselves. Excalibur is probably the most famous, but there are heaps of them, every hero owning at least one (I have to say, though, one of my favorite things about Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser is that their named weapons aren’t special, to the extent that Fafhrd’s “Graywand” is whatever sword Fafhrd happens to be holding at a given moment). Tyrfing is perhaps my favorite legendary sword, forged under duress and cursed to kill a man whenever it was drawn. It’s one of several that inspired Michael Moorcock’s demonsword Stormbringer, and I think we can all agree that Stormbringer was a monster. I’m happy to call Netherfang and Nygotha from The Vorpal Almanac the same.

Original Student Success: Sally Cantirino
For those who don't know, Sally Cantirino was our original, first student. I call her Student Zero. I built the school for her!
She was a teenager in New Jersey and I taught her in the pre-college classes at SVA in NYC. She was so dedicated and great, but when college age came, SVA, her preferred school, was out of reach, which to me was nuts.
I had been thinking of starting this school anyway, and I told her she could come, for free in exchange for work study, and she did. Actually, I sorta begged her, I was like Sally, I am making this school for you and people like you. Please drop everything and dedicate yourself to comics.
And now here she is on the SIMON+ SCHUSTER webpage, thank you very much!
And here's her website full of all the stuff she's been up to.
And meditating on this for a couple more paragraphs, I want to say what Sally did.
She did the assignments, but she did them her way.
She argued with her instructors, but that was a form of listening.
And she took advantage of every tool around her at SAW, whether it was the pens, brushes, ink, and Bristol board, or our Risograph machines with the weird colors, and the goodwill around the school (and the frequent parties and art shows we would hold) and she made lots of STUFF with what she had, and made herself VISIBLE.
I saw her work through rejections and invisibility and life curveballs but she just kept making things and here she still is, more vibrant, and more her than ever before.
Yay Sally! Yay SAW!
