The End Has A Beginning
And this is it. Lying sleepless in a Quito hostal, a sense of disbelief, excitement and dread settling over me. Our flight to Rio leaves in fifteen hours, and a week after that we'll be back. It feels like such a long time we've been away, yet how can it be that Quito, unknown, hypothetical, last stop on the west of the continent Quito, has been and gone? Rio almost doesn't feel like part of the trip. Rio is some surreal decompression chamber before Heathrow. I am both absolutely, and not at all, ready to come home.
We have both begun shedding stuff, casting a harsh eye over the precious belongings that have sustained us for most of a year. My clothes are threadbare, faded and primarily held together with ingrained sunscreen. Many of them are also too big. I have the strange sensation of my skin becoming emptier, my body having responded to the physical demands and lack of stress. Almost exactly eleven years ago I returned from my last round the world jaunt. I was a size ten. Real life was just as I'd left it, and the subsequent eighteen months were a physical and emotional catastrophe. I tell myself this won't happen again, that things are different. Nevertheless, I do not relish what I must face as a daughter, a professional, and an EU citizen. But I want to be back. What I crave right now is my friends. My friends, the ability to cook my own food, British parameters of personal space, the capacity to understand and make myself understood, music, boats, new feline companions, and the freedom to hide for a while behind my own front door. Hot, buttered toast and a proper bloody cup of tea are also featuring heavily in the fantasies right now.
Part of this week's discombobulation is that I have aged again. Being behind Greenwich, I managed to squeeze an extra six hours out of my early forties, but the inevitable happened and my mid-forties foisted themselves upon me. Forty-four, I mean how on earth did that happen? My forties are shaping up to be my best decade so far so it doesn't bother me per se, however the double-edged sword of a little weight loss is showing in the mirror. While my cheek bones might be staging a late career comeback, my neck is exhibiting signs of decay. My birthday itself was bookended with reasons to have faith in humanity. The night before, James had realised he was no longer in possession of his eye-wateringly expensive prescription sunglasses. We'd come down from Otavalo during the day and roamed around old Quito in search of food and a beverage. The old town proved to be exceptionally quiet after hours so it had not been particularly eventful. What we had noticed was the heavy police and security presence on the main streets, an attempt to control the rampant theft that Quito has been notorious for. When even the pharmacies are guarded by guys with pump action shotguns, you know there's an issue. We didn't want to think ill of the Quiteños, but the glasses were gone and pickpocketing was a possibility. The first order of service on my birthday was, therefore, returning to the cafe we'd visited last. As if it was the most natural and likely outcome in the world, the proprietor said yes of course they had them, and promptly produced them from a cupboard. Heartily surprised and pleased, we lingered, and ate cake for breakfast.
The rest of the day was spent roaming around and seeing what the city presented. We'd planned to go to the modern art museum, but the impressively restored building was between installations and mostly lacking in art. We found one of the many cathedrals, a lovely park, the epicentre of the new city's bar scene, and then discovered the excellent permanent exhibits at the cultural centre. With a tasty Mexican lunch under our belts, we were more focused on drinks and entertainment in the evening, landing in a bar with a singer later on. Beer gave way to jugs of canelazo, a local speciality of hot mulled fruity cane-sugar liquor. In a fairly cheerful state we ordered snacks, and so it was that I ended up having a large cob of unsweet corn, with broad beans and a slice of cheese for my birthday dinner. Not exactly what I thought I'd ordered but actually pretty good. At the other end of the table, two friends were on a similar snacks and drinks mission, and it soon became clear that Margarita and Luz were celebrating the former's birthday. It was not long before we were all chatting away and I was being taught to dance properly to the music. Luz very kindly insisted on buying more drinks and when we tried to share the cost, promptly settled our entire bill with the waiter on her way out. An astonishing and beautiful gesture by a virtual stranger. We paid forward the joy with a hefty tip for our very pleased waiter, who'd gamely been beavering away with a broken arm. The gift of restored optimism must surely be one of the finest birthday presents.
The rest of our time in Quito has been spent grazing on the city without much of an agenda. Our hostal has been a quiet bolt hole, where we were surprised to have found a couple of English language film channels. We have binge-watched shamelessly and without discernment. Last night we ventured off into the night in search of a salsoteca, replete with live music and dancing. It wouldn't have mattered how many cocktails we downed, we were always going to be terrible but it was great fun nonetheless. English reserve has no place on a salsa dancefloor and it was with no little envy and admiration that we watched the carefree, fancy footwork of the locals. Today, in entirely appropriate style, we rounded off the South American leg with a visit to the Quito Observatory, one of the oldest on the continent. Astronomy in the roof and seismology in the basement, it was South America in a nutshell. Our epic slice of time and distance together has been almost nothing.
