Black Cross Nurses (BCN) in the giant parade through Harlem that opened the 30-day annual world convention of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), August 1, 1922. The convention supported the Back to Africa movement and the Black Star Line (a shipping line created by Marcus Garvey and UNIA that was to transport goods and eventually African Americans throughout the African global economy). The BCN was an auxiliary of UNIA for the provision of health services and education for people of African descent. Founded in 1920 by Henrietta Vinton Davis, it was based on the World War I nursing model of the Red Cross.
