THEY'RE OUTSIDE - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Terror Films
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: A professor of Folklore provides context to the found footage we are about to watch. An internet celebrity psychologist's last case involves an agoraphobic woman he sought to cure. A bit of a self centered narcissist, Max learns that at the root of Sarah’s phobia is the local legend of “Green Eyes,” which she believes abducted her daughter. Max is determined to cure Sarah but the harder he pushes and deeper he probes the more he is drawn into the supernatural events of the coastal town.
REVIEW: Sam Casserly & Airell Anthony Hayles’s THEY’RE OUTSIDE is a clash of old folklore and modern technology. It’s more of a polished found footage movie as it is presented more as a mockumentary.
The premise is interesting. I found the characters and their motivations engaging. Clearly this is more about the internet psychologist, Max, then his patient, Sarah. There are dark comedic beats, or maybe what I perceived as such, in the narrative that were distracting. Likewise, the “expert” at the beginning of the film seems out of palace as the opening scene has one of the characters we’ll meet contemplating suicide. The characters lack any depth, most importantly of all Max. Even as the film moves to the climax and resolution there is no change in Max or Sarah. They enter this nightmare, something that should shock Max’s grasp on his personal reality.  Understanding that this is an independent film doesn't give the filmmakers’ a pass on their writing. The final act feels too much like a “Blair Witch” ending but there is nothing here to elicit an emotional response to the viewer. Other than his baser actions nothing has really changed. We really need to see Max unravel a bit and possibly see a glimpse or two of his humanity. The characters plateau too early and the end had no emotional impact.
The filmmakers have some excellent locations, especially footage of the local May Day celebration. They found a nice location for Sarah’s house with the deep forest encroaching on her backyard. The cinematography is a bit crisp but they manage to get some artist shots of the location. The effects are simple and they could have done a bit more to add atmosphere to the film. I thought the production designs were interesting and the illustrations for the green man were nicely done.
I was a bit shocked to see the credit for Sascha Blank for the score. I know that there was some music in the film. However, the majority of the film lacks any musical accompaniment I can recall.
I like the entire cast. They’re strong performances, but they are not multidimensional. For me, these performances might have been more effective in a short than a feature. It might have been a problem with what was on the page or possibly the direction. Each character hits their stride and never changes after that, it’s just more of the same. Actor Nick Vince is the folklorist at the beginning of the film and once that scene is played out Vince is gone from the film. His performance feels like it was an afterthought and a combination of script and improvised material.
I don’t feel that THEY’RE OUTSIDE is a bad film, but it is a flawed one. The idea of this local folklore is interesting but the premise comes up short in the execution. There is no atmosphere and the cinematography is stark, the lighting utilitarian. I like the actors yet the performances are lacking. I was engaged and vested early on but had to struggle to stay engaged with the film. There are good elements to the film that might best serve another genre or television, but doesn’t have what is required to be an engaging horror film.

The 2020 NFL mock draft database
Tumblr media
Jeff Okudah, Joe Burrow, and Tristan Wirfs are three names near the top of every mock draft.
Joe Burrow to Cincinnati and Chase Young to Washington are givens. After that, it’s anyone’s guess.
While the majority of the sports world has grinded to a halt due to the spread of coronavirus, the NFL machine has raged on.
The 2020 NFL Draft is still scheduled for April 23-25 — albeit a modified one that won’t take place in Las Vegas. With the draft coming soon, experts are trying their best to predict how it’ll all shake out.

The 10 Most Marvellous Modernist Homes Of The Year
The 10 Most Marvellous Modernist Homes Of The Year

He skilfully managed to match the wood stain to the original wood panels.’ On the bench is the 1970s Le Creuset pot, and vintage orange bowl. Photo – Derek Swalwell.

There are stairs and split levels everywhere in this house. These stairs lead from the sun-room to the music room then up another level to the kitchen.  You can also see the original porthole lights in the ceilings and the very uniquely designed light boxes, which Katie and Ian re-furbished. A  Lovingly Restored Mid-Century Marvel In Mount Martha
This circa 1973 home may look straight out of Palm Springs, but it’s actually located just outside Melbourne in Mount Martha.
Originally designed by Karl Fender (now one half of Fender Katsalidis), owner Katie Brannaghan and her husband Ian purchased the property in 2017 and have since returned the house to its former glory.
We shared this spectacular home back in October, and it’s already one of the popular mid-century homes we’ve published to date!

Avoiding The Coastal Cliché, With Mid Century Flair
This home on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula is the ultimate combination of beach house, mid-century, and sophisticated modern design.
Studio Esteta recently updated the hilltop home to accommodate six bedrooms, without stripping it of modernist character. Among stunning features are the crazy interior paving and rich marbled surfaces, complemented by original mid-century furniture and decor.

Enhancing The Past In Studley Park
Our Instagram went crazy upon posting the facade image of this home located on Studley Park, a tightly held pocket of Melbourne’s Kew!
The mid-century home was originally designed by influential Russian-born Australian architect Anatol Kagan, who was committed to designing buildings that had a positive impact on society.
Most recently, the 1950s home has been sympathetically renovated by Kennedy Nolan, who refreshed the architectural beauty of the property, and re-zoned the layout to reflect a more contemporary way of living.

This original Robin Boyd-designed house in Warrandyte is now the family home of writer, strategist and podcast host Emma Clark Grattan, furniture maker Lee Grattan, and their children Archer and Jethro. The original house on the block burned down in 1962, and the owners commissioned Robin Boyd to design this new house in 1963. The house is clad with steel, which is quite unusual for the celebrated architect, but part of the brief was that the house was fire-resistant. Landscaping by Emma and Lee. Photo – Caitlin Mills. This Rare Robin Boyd Original Makes An Extraordinary Family Home
Among the many beautiful mid-century homes in Melbourne’s Warrandyte is this 1963 one designed by iconic Australian architect, Robin Boyd.
This home is owned by content strategist and writer Emma Clark Gratton, and her furniture making husband, Lee Gratton, who moved here in search of extra space for their young family.
The seasoned renovators couple have redone the kitchen, added new cabinetry and tiling, renovated the master bedroom, and installed solar panels among many other small tweaks.
We love the spectacular views appreciated via through floor-to-ceiling windows in every room, alongside the beautifully designed interiors full of Gratton furniture and retro finds.

A 1960s Portsea Shack Gets A Contemporary Revamp
Pleysier Perkins recently transformed this ‘tired beige’ ‘60s shack in Portsea, Victoria into a light and bright getaway that balances mid-century charm with modern family life.
The architects updated the kitchen, dining, and living area in the process to improve spatial flow, added a new playroom, and gave the interiors minor facelift.
Full-height doors at both ends of the new addition connect the space with the outdoors. The boundaries between these spaces are blurred with the use of crazy pavers that gently extend from the interiors to the grassy outdoor areas.

Modernising A Mid-Century Stunner
This mid-century home in St Lucia, Brisbane, features light and airy spaces to make the most of its subtropical climate.
The property was renovated by Lucy Jeffries as one of the first projects since establishing her own studio. Prior to this, she had been honing her skills with award winning residential architectural practices Vokes and Peters and Shaun Lockyer.
This home was all about paring back and returning the home to its essential form, with a few carefully considered contemporary updates.

A Corner-Block Mid-Century Classic
Our columnists over at Modernist Australia introduced this 1958 home in Klemzig, Adelaide, to us when it was on the market earlier in the year. It’s since been snapped up, and it’s not hard to see why!
The home has been sympathetically updated by its previous owners, who lived there since 1968. Many original features were retained over the decades, including a glassy window wall looking into the living room, and the wonderfully pink bathroom!

Mid Century Meets Modern, In This Thoughtfully Renovated 1960s Home
This ‘60s home is pure mid-century from the street, but step inside and you’ll find some seriously glamorous interiors!
Bower Architecture and Interiors were responsible for recently updating this Caulfield property. The brief was to rediscover and celebrate the home’s original features, and create additional spaces with ‘hints of whimsy and glamour (but not glitz).’

An Amazing Mid-Century Home Gets A High-Tech Makeover!
A dreamy waterfront site meets classic mid-century in Sydney’s Middle Cove.
The house was originally designed by architect Glynn Nicholls (son of Eric Nicholls – Walter Burley Griffin’s Australian business partner) in 1959, but was recently extended by 8 Squared.
The interior design by Studio Gorman is just as impressive, combining ‘50s elements alongside the latest technology to take this home into the 21st century and beyond.

Under-15 FL Division 3 Final
 KILLARY EMMETS 1-18
 TRIM 4-5
GOALS usually win matches - but it didn't win this one - as Killary deservedly took the honours in this U-15 FL Division 3 decider at Dunganny on Friday evening.
The conditions were atrocious with incessant rain throughout but it didn't dampen Killary spirits as they recovered from the concession of three goals inside 16 minutes to lead by seven points entering the closing stages.
A Trim goal deep into added time left for a nervy finish but the Syddan/Castletown combination held out and Rian McConnell hit the insurance score from a free just before the final whistle.
Killary made a promising start with points from Killian Smyth and Darragh Kelly but by the time Rian McConnell accounted for their next point Trim had struck for two goals.
Both came from live-wire full forward Sean Foley who was virtually unstoppable in the early stages. Foley's third goal left it 3-1 to 0-5 for the town side but Trim only managed another point for the remainder of the half and by half-time Killary had forced their way back into the game and were on level terms 1-8 to 3-2.
It was McConnell who got Killary back on track with a goal on 21 minutes and Darragh Kelly (two) and Adam Matthews added points as the combined side finished the half strongly.
McConnell, who was unerring from frees throughout, hit the opening two points of the second half but Trim replied to regain parity by the 40th minute.
Ciaran O'Dea regained the lead for Killary on 41 minutes and that was the start of a dominant spell for the North Meath outfit.
Four points from Adam Matthews and two more from Darragh Kelly left Killary leading 1-17 to 3-4 by the 57th minute.
Substitute Darragh Heffernan pulled a point back and the game was deep into added time when Tadhg Carty blasted a close range free to the net.
Trim went all out for a match saving goal but the Killary defence held firm and victory was assured when McConnell converted a free with the last kick of the game.
After the match county minor secretary Brian Kelly presented the shield to joint captains Ciaran O'Dea and Mark Goslin.
KILLARY EMMETS - Shane Kelly; Cillian Oakes, Mark Goslin, Ewan Sheridan; Mark Young, Killian Smyth 0-1, Cormac Farrelly; Ciaran O'Dea 0-1, Rian McConnell 1-5 (0-5f); Darragh Kelly 0-5, John Gabrial Gomez, Jack Dowdall; Adam Matthews 0-6, Aaron Monaghan, James McKenna. Subs - Darren McMahon, Josh Faherty, Cormac Dardis, Bernard Doherty, Zak Bourne, Pearse Cassidy, Aaron Young, Corey Curtis, Keelan Sheerin.
TRIM - Caelum Casserly; Victor Barbu, Eoghan Ryan, Ronan McGinley; Sam Kennedy, Evan Collins 0-1, Dylan Coyle; Tadhg Carty 1-0f, Ian Byrne 0-1; Cian Geraghty, Max McGowan 0-1, Ethan Shiels; Aaron O'Sullivan, Sean Foley 3-1, Mark Jordan. Sub - Darragh Heffernan 0-1.

Head of national performance Luke Casserly joins FFA exodus
Tumblr media
Matildas captain and star striker Sam Kerr sits down with ESPN to share her journey from Aussie rules to soccer and what coming home to Perth truly means.
The exodus of leading members of Australian football’s governing body has widened with FFA head of national performance Luke Casserly to leave the position after six years in the role.
The FFA confirmed on Monday the 45-year-old would depart the organisation “in the coming weeks.”
Casserly is the latest high-profile departure from FFA following head of women’s football Emma Highwood’s departure in July, while chief executive David Gallop has already announced he’s leaving the role in December.
– Besart Berisha returns to the A-League – James Meredith moves to Perth Glory – Jets marquee Hoolahan sidelined until 2020
In a statement, the FFA said Casserly’s departure was part of an internal realignment as the governing body hands over control of the A-League to club owners and awaits the outcomes of an internal review of their operational structure.
Gallop thanked Casserly, an ex-Socceroo capped eight times by Australia, for his performance in the role.
“Luke has helped numerous Australian national football teams attain the highest platform in the most competitive of international sports,” Gallop said.
“He has demonstrated a great passion and commitment to coaches, support staff and players alike. His legacy will be a significant one.”
Casserly was appointed to the position in 2013 and oversaw the operations of 10 national teams including the Socceroos and Matildas.
Tumblr media
Luke Casserly will follow Emma Highwood and David Gallop out the FFA exit door.
He is credited with appointing Bert van Marwijk as Socceroos coach for the 2018 World Cup following Ange Postecoglu’s departure but received criticism for his handling of the sacking of Alen Stajcic as Matildas coach in January.
It’s unclear at this stage if a new head of national performance will be appointed or if the position will no longer exist as the FFA undergoes its restructure.

The event has been put together by Keynote, one of the biggest (if not the biggest) players in this side of the industry, being responsible for the largest and longest running conference in the blockchain space and having run twelve global conferences since 2012. As Keynote states on the event’s promotional website:
“We will also be hearing from the biggest in the industry about the hottest new thing in the crypto-currency community – ICOs.”
Of thousands of applicant companies, only a handful have been accepted and selected as sponsors of the event. These represent some of the most promising and well-supported companies in the blockchain space right now and the sponsorship presence (which, in a select number of cases, also includes a booth at the event) is sure to draw a considerable amount of interest and attention as the event matures.
One of these companies is CLOUT.
CLOUT is a company that’s trying to change the way the bitcoin and blockchain spaces publish, share and create media, content and information.
The company’s Founder, Sean Kirtz, founded Bitcoin Day Traders, a leading social cryptocurrency enthusiast community. Through Bitcoin Day Traders, Kirtz discovered that the individuals that made up the community were desperately seeking accurate and relevant information relating to the cryptocurrency and blockchain space but were unable to find it or – if they did find it – couldn’t rely on it as accurate.
Kirtz spotted an unmet need and figured he could develop a platform, built on blockchain technology, which could incentivize quality to ensure consistent and reliable access to information for anyone inside or outside of the space looking for it.
And so, the platform, called CLOUT, was born.
CLOUT will be the first to tokenize content in this way and – in turn – the first to employ a blockchain based token system not only to ensure that content creators are rewarded for the content they create but also that the highest quality content is seen by the most people and, in turn, that those who share the content are rewarded for dissemination of top quality material.
Think Reddit crossed with Facebook, but built on a blockchain based reward network and focused (from both a content and a user perspective) on blockchain technology and all its various applications to the modern world.
It’s a neat idea and it’s one that some of the biggest names in the industry have gotten behind. Toni Lane Casserly, Co-Founder of Cointelegraph, is an Advisor. As is Sam Lee, Co-Founder of Ethereum China. David Cohen, a well-known pioneer in this space, is also one of the company’s Advisors.
And it’s not just strong leadership – the company just proved that it’s got a very strong level of industry and community support with a sold-out pre-ICO and is scheduled to hit a number of big-name exchanges near term.
On February 1, 2018, CLOUT’s ICO tokens will list on HitBTC, a European exchange that launched in 2013 and that has since grown to become one of the industry’s most respected exchange providers. The tokens will also list on Coinbene, a major Asian exchange, on February 15, 2018.
This is an exciting technology and one that’s sure to garner a substantial amount of attention at the upcoming Miami event. If you’ve got any questions or want to know more (and if you’re attending the event) be sure to check out CLOUT’s booth.
Readers looking for information can find it on CLOUT’s website here. The company’s whitepaper is available here.

Eagles Trading Out of the First Round: Yeah or No?
Confession: I totally forgot about the NFL Draft.
I guess it doesn’t feel as important this time around because the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles don’t necessarily have a ton of holes to fill. This isn’t 2016, when Howie Roseman “mortgaged the future” (successfully) for a franchise quarterback. This isn’t 2017, when the Birds had a top-15 pick and the draft was held on the Art Museum steps. In 2018, it’s more placid than urgent as Howie and Joe Douglas head to Arlington with the 32nd overall pick and not much beyond that.
Here’s what they’re currently working with:
Round 1, pick 32
Round 4, pick 130 (from the Eric Rowe trade)
Round 4, pick 132
Round 5, pick 156 (from the Matt Tobin trade)
Round 5, pick 169
Round 6, pick 206
Seems like people think the Birds might trade out of the first round and swing that pick to someone else instead.
What say you? Good idea? Bad idea? Don’t care one way or another?
It seems like the precedent for trading out of this spot is a 2nd and 4th round pick in return. That’s what happened last year when Seattle traded the 31st overall pick to San Francisco for the 34th and 111th overall pick. The 49ers took Reuben Foster at 31 and the Seahawks grabbed a defensive tackle and safety.
New England traded out of 32 last year and threw in a third round pick to get Brandin Cooks and a 4th rounder in return.
And in 2016, Seattle traded pick 26 to Denver, who gave up a first and a third (picks 31 and 94) to select Paxton Lynch.
So maybe the Birds can turn this into a second rounder and a late third, but it seems more likely that they’d end up with a second and fourth based on recent history. That would give them three fourth round picks, allowing them to possibly package two of those to get back into the third round.
It would look something like this:
trade #32 overall for a 2nd and a 4th
trade two of your 4th round picks for a 3rd
result = one pick each in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds
That’s not unreasonable, right? You’re basically just streamlining your draft instead of having to pick at 32, then wait all the way until 130 rolls around on Saturday afternoon.
ESPN ran a story asking each team insider to weigh in on draft possibilities, and this is what Tim McManus wrote:
The Eagles will trade out of the first round
Then snag an offensive skill position player early in the second. The Super Bowl champs have a league-low six picks at the moment. They can add to their stockpile by selling their No. 32 pick, potentially to a quarterback-needy team. The top of the second round looks like a good spot to land a difference-making running back.
Peter King has the Eagles grabbing Texas lineman Connor Williams at #32, but also believes a trade is in the cards:
32. PHILADELPHIA—CONNOR WILLIAMS, G-T, TEXAS
But I think the Eagles are much more likely to deal this pick; I just don’t know to whom. They’re seeking a trade—that I can tell you. Philadelphia has no pick in rounds two or three, and the Eagles don’t pick until the end of round four. So as of now, they go from 33 to 129 without a pick. That’s why they’ll be trying to deal all night Thursday. If they stick … The Eagles have a 35-year-old left tackle, Jason Peters, coming off major injury, and starting guards (Stefan Wisniewski and Brandon Brooks) who will be 29 this season. Connor’s the perfect pick for them, in the unlikely event they stick.
Over at NFL.com, Daniel Jeremiah and Charley Casserly have the Eagles grabbing UGA running back Sony Michel at 32. Bucky Brooks thinks Notre Dame tackle Mike McGlinchey will still be available then and Curtis Conway likes South Dakota State tight end Dallas Goedert.
I like him, too:
Actually, let’s stop it there and think about what the Eagles really need.
Jason Peters is no spring chicken and he’s coming off a major injury. Is Big V your left tackle of the future? Do you draft and stash a guard? They added Richard Rodgers but will need another tight end to replace the departed Brent Celek and Trey Burton. Running back seems like a spot to address as well, and you can find that guy in the second round if you trade out.
Derrius Guice is a name that keeps popping up in relation to the Eagles. The LSU product is a downhill dude who would be a really nice replacement for LeGarrette Blount. Corey Clement is due for an increased role in 2018 but there’s plenty of snaps for everyone, considering how Duce Staley handled the rotation last year.
And if you’re thinking player trade, Mychal Kendricks might be on the block again. You could theoretically package him into a draft day deal to get back into the second round. The possibilities are endless! Oh my!
Trade partners?
If the Birds do deal, who bites?
Green Bay makes sense. The Packers have the most picks in this draft, 12, and would package some together to move up.
Keep an eye out for teams in need of a quarterback, too. Buffalo picks #12 overall but might not get one of Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield. Do they burn that pick on Mason Rudolph or let him fall a bit, then jump back in? The quarterback rush might push some top-15 talent down a bit further than usual, which has been the case in recent years.
Indy looks good. They’ve got three second round picks and a third rounder, and could get back into the late first round while still holding one or two of those selections.
Cleveland needs help everywhere. They have two early second round picks, 33 and 35, where the Birds could move down only a few spots and still get great return. The Browns have 9 picks to work with.
Will Brinson at CBS Sports seems to think this scenario is in the cards:
32. Cleveland Browns (PHI mock)
Derrius Guice, RB, LSU: The Eagles are trading out of this spot, it’s just a question of with who, and after the Browns missed on Barkley up high, they can land Guice here with the bonus of picking up his fifth-year option, a crucial element in a running back contract in 2018.
Seems unlikely to me that the Birds would trade out of 32 if Guice was still on the board, but who knows?
Either way, I think you’re in a good spot here. The worst case scenario is that no one jumps on a trade and you take the “best available player” at 32. This is a strong tight end group, and you could probably land one of Goedert, Mike Gesicki, or Hayden Hurst here, though the latter is a strong favorite to go to New Orleans at 27.
You could grab the best available offensive lineman, and hope for Connor Williams or Kolton Miller or McGlinchey to stick around. You could take a running back like Michel or Royce Freeman or even go slot corner/safety. Maybe cornerback is in play with the release of Daryl Worley. Who plays in the slot this season?
Another thing to think about is that pick #32, while technically existing in the first round, is basically a glorified second rounder, isn’t it? I mean, the Eagles are closer to pick 45 than pick 15, so when we’re using “first round” language, there’s a bit of semantics involved. Myles Garrett and Ryan Ramczyk were both first round picks, but no one in their right mind is putting pick #1 and pick #32 on the same plane of evaluation, right? Bottom-end first round guys are hardly describable in the same sense as top-ten selections. There’s more disparity from 1 to 32 than there is from 65 to 107. I guess what I’m explaining is that it would off-base to say, “well the Eagles wasted a first rounder on this guy!” if they stick with #32 overall and the player ends up being a bust.
Right, anyway, if the Eagles trade out of the first round, are you cool with that?
