Sacred The Thread: A prime example of why Great Van Fleet is my favorite band
first let me just say, this song is so BEAUTIFUL. i’ll get into my thoughts of the sound a little later😁
but let me say THIS. this song is a prime example of why greta is such a monumental band to me.
sacred the thread (to me) represents how IMPORTANT self expression is. down to the literal THREADS.
each thread, sequin, gem, seam, & trim play a part the makeup of a piece of clothing that you choose to express yourself through. colors and materials that show the world what makes you, YOU.
like the way it describes how self expression is home to a person because at the end of the day what you have is yourself. all the wonderful parts that make up YOU. your deepest thoughts, feelings, and ideas are yours and no one can take that from you.
it means so much to me that this song represents that. self expression is NEEDED in todays society. in a world where people are turned away and discriminated against just for being who they are to their core.
self expression heals.
self expression lets people find themselves.
self expression is home.
self expression is FREEDOM.
i love this song. i love greta.
thank you for listening to my ted talk folks.😚

I think what I love most about them using the vocal effect for STT is it shows experimentation and growth. It’s still very clearly GVF but it’s also a little bit different and ultimately you want artists to have growth and try new things throughout their career. If they just did the same thing every time it wouldn’t be as exciting (I know I know, these boys could read through the phone book and we’d all eat it up but you know what I mean). So what’s cool about this is that people can listen to STT and they’ll know “oh, this is Greta van Fleet”, but then they’ll hear the vocal effect and also go “This is Greta Van Fleet?” and it’s just a subtle way of them showing growth and experimentation but also staying true to who they are as artists. Because STT without the vocal effect? A good song, no doubt. But the vocal effect just adds so much more nuance and depth and aesthetic to it making it a great song.

SunnyTimeTown One-Shot
Tumblr media
A/N: Based off of "Makes Me Smile" by XOVoltagium, featuring Sam Sours and my SunnyTimeTown OC, Midnight Bluebelle. Takes place in the early 60s.
Came up with this at a home game. Idk if it's officially in my AU, but I really like the idea, even if it's somewhat contrived?
Enjoy 💚💜💛
Minors DNI, this is still a 18+ fandom
---
“She’s yours.” Dixie Doulard declared, standing tight-lipped and cross-armed at Sam Sours’ door. She wore a flowery sundress and white flats. Cat-eye shades covered her eyes. Beside her was a little girl dressed in a white sunday dress with a sweet violet pattern. She couldn’t be older than four. And she slouched in posture, staring down at the cement as if she were being punished. Sam blinked blearily at the both of them, his eyes still adjusting to the sunlight. When he finally registered what she’d said though, his heart briefly quickened until he took note of the kids’ violet hair. A trait neither of them possessed.
“Like hell,” Sam sneered, giving Dixie a wry grin.
“It’s yours,” She insisted, “I have the tests to prove it.”
“So? You think those can’t be faked?”
Dixie narrows her eyes and places her hands on her hips, “I haven’t been with anyone else.”
Sam twists the cigar in his mouth, “So you say…” he mutters. And the womans’ eyes nearly pop out of her head, “What’s that supposed to mean? You better not be calling me some kind of whore!” The little girl flinches from her outburst. Instead of calling attention to that, Sam warns her about her volume lest the neighbors hear.
“I said nothing like that. Whatever you do in your spare time is your business,” Sam replied, “But unless you’re not a natural blond, I suggest you get another test because that girl ain’t mine.”
Dixie kneels down to the little girls’ height and wrenches up her face for him to see. Manicured nails dig into her cheeks.
“Look. Same big nose and everything!”
Sam resisted the urge to feel his own nose, but is distracted by how roughly she handles her own daughter; she’s gritting her teeth, trying to push Dixie away. It’s uncomfortable to watch. He doubted this woman had any more parental bone in her body than him. He waves her off, “Okay okay, let up off ‘er.”
Sam cranes his neck to look over the girl's face himself. It was indeed similar: a plush, round face, pouty little lips, and big green eyes. He hadn’t had any pictures of him as a kid, but he imagined that’s how he would’ve looked similar before he went and got old. Before setting up his act, passerbys often commented on how ‘adorable’ he looked, even though he was fuming.
The girl stared up at him and sniffed.
Hello to you too, brat.
“Don’t you speak?” Sam asked.
“She’s a mime.” Dixie said, narrowing her eyes at the child like she’d just spilled something on her new carpet. Something weighed on Sams’ chest, though he was quick to brush it off as heartburn. He hummed in reply. And with that the woman turned and strutted off to her pink convertible, leaving the little girl at the door.
“What- Where are you going?” Sam called out.
“Home, where else?”
“Why can’t you keep her anyway?”
“Daddy won’t let me. What do I look like having a mime out of wedlock? I already told you. I’m. No. Whore.” Dixie hopped inside the hot car with ease, wasting no time as she turned on the engine. Sam ran out the door, hands reaching out to stop her, “What the hells’ her name?!”
“Belle.”
The car sped off in a blink, the exhaust fumes catching in Sams’ throat as he keeled over in a coughing fit.

SERIOUSLY HE DID NOT ANYWHERE REMOTELY NEAR SIGN UP FOR ALL OF THIS SHIT WHERE IS THE INFORMED CONSENT PAPERWORK FOR LEARNING MAGIC IS REAL.
EXHIBIT C:
Tumblr media
MONA SYLVIA JASPER: NOT A FEMME FATALE BUT CERTAINLY A FATAL TRANSFEM. ROCKING THAT WHITE HAIR AND ELDRITCH MAGIC. MENTORED ALONGSIDE JACKSON BY RASMODIUS HIMSELF. died a horrible death BUT THAT'S OKAY BECAUSE SHE CAME BACK TO TIE UP SOME LOOSE ENDS AND IS STILL HERE FOR ADVICE FROM TIME TO TIME.
EXHIBIT D:
Tumblr media
JACKSON, ABIGAIL, SEBASTIAN, AND SAM, AKA THE JACKASS CREW. GOOFY GOOBERS WHO CAN ABSOLUTELY WRECK YOUR SHIT.
D1: JACKSON. BASED OFF OF MY IRL BESTIE WHO'S THE SINGLE MOST OUT OF POCKET FEMBOY I HAVE EVER KNOWN. LOCAL CHILD PICKS UP THE EQUIVALENT OF THE CORE OF A NEUTRON STAR WHICH THEN EMPTIES ITS CONTENTS INTO HIS SYSTEM - PROCEEDS TO BLOW A MASSIVE HOLE IN THE CLOUDS WITH A MASSIVE FUCKING ELDRITCH BLAST. LIVES TO TELL THE TALE, IS NOW EVEN MORE POWERFUL THAN WAS PREVIOUSLY POSSIBLE. IN POSSESSION OF SCHRÖDINGER'S GODHOOD.
D2: ABIGAIL. AROALLO POLYAMOROUS TRANSFEM. SKILLED WITH A SWORD AND EVENTUALLY GAINS THE ABILITY TO [SPOILER REDACTED]. We all know who the real father is AND SHE HAS TO FIND OUT EVENTUALLY.
D3: SEBASTIAN. LOCAL EMO WEED BUYER, USER OF ICE AND ELECTRICAL MAGIC. PART OF A LOVE TRIANGLE BUT DON'T WORRY WE TAKE THE POLYAMOROUS WAY OUT HERE. HAUNTED BY NIGHTMARES AND THE WAY THINGS COULD HAVE BEEN.
D4: SAM. LOCAL BUNDLE OF SUNSHINE WHO IS CONSTANTLY WORRYING ABOUT HIS BESTIES THAT HE'S ALSO IN LOVE WITH. EVENTUAL USER OF LIGHT AND ELECTRICAL MAGIC ONCE HE COMES AROUND TO IT. WILL MAKE OUT WITH [SPOILER REDACTED] TO PROVE A POINT.
AND THAT'S JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG, MY FRIEND. WE HAVE SO MANY OTHER BLORBOS FOR YOU TO SEE, AND A SECOND FIC ON THE BACKBURNER WITH A SIMILAR CAST OF CHARACTERS.
Small-Town Tales is my pet project. It's my baby and if anything happens to it i'll kill everyone in this room and then myself (reference). Jay is a barn owl avia (bird equivalent of a selkie) and arrives in town to the rudest greeting possible: getting mauled by wolves. After mauling the wolves back, he manages to fly his sopping wet bloodied self to the front door of the clinic before collapsing in the plaza, essentially on Doctor Harvey's front doorstep.
Cloak shenanigans ensue in the following chaos as Harvey saves Jay's life, bada bing bada boom you got an accidental marriage that nobody wanted. Jay manages to settle into Pelican town which, despite seeming like an idyllic little village, is actually a massive source of chaos for anyone living there. Other character arcs coming soon to a chapter near you.
Promise? Is my project on the back burners. Despite this, I love it just as much as STT - although it certainly won't end up anywhere near as long (pleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease have mercy on me gods of writing and hyperfixations). Doctor Harvey finds himself down bad with hanahaki for the local aspiring author. Angst ensues - do not fear, for i am an absolute slut for the comfort part in hurt/comfort.
More details on both can be found on my sideblog, @gracklekeyer2000 , as well as my Ao3 account by the same name. All of my writing on Ao3 requires an account to view because of the muskrat's data scraping. However, The Incident is linked in the pinned post on my sideblog. It's not quite complete yet - there's meant to be a part 3 - but the most important, plot-relevant details coming from that piece have been ironed out in the first two parts.

Testing testing 123, is this on……
What are some thoughts on STT? How does it compare to MTM? in your wise opinion.
Alright get ready--music degree Anna is about to GO OFF!
First of all, I really like this track--The isolated drum introduction is something we haven't really seen from GVF, and it's almost too long (a good thing), which teases us into the song itself. As much as we hate to admit it, this is almost a dead ringer for the start of "When the Levee Breaks", and I think it's 100% intentional.
I really enjoy the melody, and it feels like a continuation of Age of Machine. I enjoy the mystical effect that this song has...I keep imagining medieval knights pulling on their armor and suiting up for battle...I imagine armored stallions with intricate fabric banners fastened over their bodies with the symbol of the kingdom/army as they ready to carry their owner into battle. The graphic on the Spotify and YouTube releases of the song include a graphic that seems somewhat medieval...the picture looks like some kind of castle/fortress/colliseum...
READ MORE IF YOU'RE INTERESTED!
My personal interpretation is that this song is about releasing all inhibitions (Not Natasha Bedingfield hehehe) and letting fate decide the outcome of some great endeavor...This song feels resigned to a belief that there is something better, something beyond explanation outside the bonds of earth "I've caught the wind in a kite of dreams, and a flight of seams..." It's giving me a "What was once broken will be mended" vibe.
Let's talk about the music...
I have heard a lot of polarized opinions about this single so far...fans either love or hate the mixing and mastering of it. I really like the reverb and room-distortion sound that they put on Josh's vocals, BUT, I think it would have been even better if we would have had some moments in the song where this effect were stripped back a little bit. With that being said, I LOVE the sound of this effect on his voice, particularly when he sings the word "Unravelled." It adds such a raw, honest sound to the vocal, and I love how it sounds against his vibrato.
I love the robust, consistent sound of the drums, and with Sam's basic, but vital baseline, the rhythm section provides the support for the rest of the band.
I've seen talk of missing a guitar solo from Jake, but I can almost guarantee one will be inserted on live performances...I love the lighter falsetto adlibs of josh's--they add to the ethereal quality of the song!
Another thing I have noticed is that these songs sound far more repetitive and relaxed than those on TBAGG. I don't mean this in a negative way, but there is a somewhat sedate, resigned quality to these first two singles...I'm itching for that garage-rock sound that they were hinting at initially.
My assumption is that they are releasing these singles to drum up excitement without revealing the other aces up their sleeve. I know damn well that Jake wouldn't approve an album without some damn good guitar solos...
Further thought, and now that I'm thinking about it, these newest singles feel less like a collection of cinematic scenes...
Let's take WOD for a second...that entire song feels like a journey, and much of that is because of the lyricism, but also in the way that the music is composed...the music itself was written in a big ABA form. We're introduced to the versus and chorus, the huge guitar solo section serves as a B, and then josh comes back in with the initial chorus again with a classical guitar tag at the end to round the song out.
In Sacred the Thread and Meeting the Master, the boys play more with dynamics (how loud and soft they play, the style, etc). Also, we are used to lengthy bridges that usually include a solo from Jake that brings forth so much rising tension, pulling the audience along for the ride, but the bridges in these two solos are either of existing material or of a single repetitive phrase (ex. "Blow it up to give him all of our love" in MTM).
Overall, I am curious to see what the rest of the album brings forth...this is a new sound from GVF and I am beyond excited to hear more!
