i’ve always seen ppl saying tokyo ghoul is an allegory for various things, but obviously, the most important allegory in tg is the one that speaks to you as a person - this is the same for any media, but i digress.

personally, i think tg is most successful at being an allegory for disability or mental illness - EDs being a huge part of the latter. people are born disabled, or disordered or into disorder, but these things can manifest later on, or occur suddenly and randomly, to people who were previously completely healthy or ‘normal’.

Recently I read a post were a user on Reddit was talking about this tale, and now it reflected the three sorrengail siblings, and I couldn't help but disagreeing with this.

There is a bunch of reasons why I think that theory is wrong, the main one being that the only actual similarity between the two sets of sibling is Violet and "the brother who made the skies surrender its power”. None of the other bonded a griffin, and as far as we know none of them is venin.

So, what we know about this story is this:

one brother bonded a dragon, one brother a griffin, and when the last one grew jealous he started drawing directly from the source.

I think we should consider this story exactly like that, a story, a fable and not take it too literallly.

Stop thinking for a second about this brothers has people, and consider them as figure of speech (maybe to pass down more erasily even to children the story of the continent)

So what if the three brothers were the nations that make up the continent? Because if you look at the story from this perspective, then you do have three "brother" who have the same characteristic as the ones in the story:

Navarre is the brother who bonded dragons;

Poromiel is the brother who bonded griffins;

The Barrens is the brother who got jealous and turned venin;

And I promise that if you look at the hints scattered inside the books you'll see that:

1. Dragons are endemic to the territories that make up Navarre. Even the original hatching grounds are located inside what is now Navarre (suspiciously close to the border of the wards.. that's another theory though);

2. Griffins are endemic to Poromiel, their "hatching grounds" (not sure we can use the same terminology) is in the area where Cliffsbane academy is/was (we learn that when the griffin riders share their process of entering the college);

3. The Barrens have no mythical / magical creatures that we know off.

If you think about it, at one point in history Poromielians (how are they called lol ??) and Navarrians bonded mythical / magical creatures that gave them magic, on top of any military or economical advantages they might had. It is understandable how the people of the Barrens might have felt threatened and searched for alternatives to the newfound magic of their neighbors.

We then know that the Venins originated from the Barrens, so that's the solution they found.

The story also tells us that:

The younger brother made the skies surrender its greatest power and thus vanquished his jealous brother at a great and terrible price.

Which again parallels the fact that Navarre unified, and was created as a nation, only after the war against the Venins 650 yars ago, therefore it makes sense to be reffered as the younger brother.

We then circle around and go back to Violet: since, if we follow this theory, it was a dragon rider who made the skies surrender its power and defeated its jelous sibling at a grat and terrible price.

Anyway: Sonya was not wrong about the shit he said wrt “rodya killed someone to feed her hero complex.” like yeah sure he was being a dick about it (probably to get under rodya’s skin) but he wasn’t incorrect; in fact, it’s meant to bother her so much BECAUSE she knows it’s true, too.

i have seen a few sentiments floating around insinuating that this was something sonya pulled out of his ass. it is not. this is literally the reason why raskolnikov killed the pawnbroker in crime and punishment; it’s DIRECTLY stated in the book scene that limbus mirrors (by rodya himself!!!!). it was because he wanted to take a first step, to prove that yeah he can actually do something and he does have the strength to change the people around him, to prove to himself he can be a hero— except, he doesn’t have the resolve to kill someone without remorse. he recognizes he’s crossed a social boundary he shouldn’t have and the act of him realizing this eats him alive

that’s what torments rodya for the literal entire book it’s what the whole thing is about. basically any essay on it will also agree: rodya certainly didn’t kill for the money or even really to help people, it was for selfish reasons.

now there are a few retorts to this. a big one is probably that the book characters don’t necessarily line up with their game counterparts. this is true! a lot of rodya’s external character is extremely different from raskolnikov’s, to the point that i often forget she’s based off of him. i would argue, however, they’re very similar internally and thematically (as i suspect will be the case for many of the sinners), which is where the motive for murder crosses over.

you could also argue that raskolnikov is an unreliable narrator (it’s all third person but mostly centered on him and his thoughts you get what i mean. regardless of semantics he’s irrational) and that what he says shouldn’t be taken at face value. and i mean i sort of guess so but cmon it’s the confessional scene, i would at least think he’s telling the truth here of all scenes. regardless, evidence is from of raskolnikov and wishywashy on its own. if you look at more concrete evidence in the world around him you can say he didn’t do it to help anyone (as no one was shown to benefit from the murder) nor for money (he did not spend any of what he stole).

i wish we got like a few more scenes putting this into context in limbus since they don’t really show much of it? which is probably why i have seen so many people claiming otherwise of rodyas character. since it’s stuff you’d only know if you went and read the book or went and read analysis on the book

anyway a lot of this ended up being Book analysis and not Game analysis but my point is: Yeah rodya did kill that tax collector bc of “stupid” reasons. what is the problem with that? is there something wrong with her being selfish? all of these characters are dubbed Sinners and everything man like they’re all gonna be flawed people and it’s what makes them interesting. like trying to claim that rodya is 100% good-intentioned is just doing her disservice

whatever happened to supporting women’s wrongs. im serious. why is rodya not allowed to be selfish or have fucked up reasons for doing things. i have seen zero people try to refute dante telling sinclair he fucked up and his mistakes were the reason his family died as some kind of incorrect statement of his character! like everyone sort of just knows yeah, they weren’t really lying; that sort of did happen as a consequence of his actions, he just didn’t know the full extent until afterward. why is sonya making a similar judgement on rodya so different?

i believe it’s a fairly consistent theme across project moon games that what goes around comes around; when you fuck up or if you fuck someone over it WILL bite your ass eventually. the shit you do unto others will be done unto you. everything perpetuates a cycle whether you like it or not. it just wouldn’t be the same thematically if rodya was this innocent and entirely selfless person, both in the context of comparing her to crime and punishment as well as pmooniverse.
