sammy valdez definitely called hazel "mi media naranja." before she disappeared, a cute thing he heard from his parents. he was hers, even if he didn't have to confidence to say that outright, yet. in the end, he didn't have a chance to tell her before she disappears so he teaches it to esperanza, like he taught her morse code.

esperanza valdez definitely called leo that when he was still very young. she did that mother thing where she rubs her nose against her baby's and calls him "mi media naranja." she did the same when she peeled his oranges when he was feeling down. he always thought she was just funny, calling him an orange half.

leo valdez definitely understands now that she wasn't just trying to be funny, especially now that he has you. being the seventh wheel was worth it now that he's found someone to call "mi media naranja." and he lets you know that in morse code, tapping it on your shoulder as you fall asleep in his arms. he wonders if you'll have the same silly dreams about being an orange like he did, if he calls you it enough.

mi media naranja: meaning "other half of my soul," essentially expressing how no two oranges are identical and wouldn't fit if you put just any two halves together. and thus the person you tell it to is your other half as you wouldn't fit with anyone else, the perfect match.

Man... if Sammy had still been alive when Leo was a kid and heard when Rosa started calling him cursed and all that, then Sammy would have been like alright, cracking my arthritic knuckles bout to set the record set for his granddaughter because his first love and childhood best friend was also called that sort of thing and she was the loveliest person ever sooo.... yeah, that's all shut down the first time it happens.

This was just supposed to be a quick and funny observation but if this did happen, then most likely there would have been a couple of relatives that would have not gone along with Rosa after Esperanza dies and taken Leo in :(

i've always been confused about how the curse of hazel's gems affected sammy--or rather, didn't affect him. like he lived to be old enough to meet his great grandson, and that was decades after he sold hazel's diamond. that shouldn't have been possible. he shouldn't have been able to live such a long and happy life. which is why, when gaea told hazel in son that he died in the 60s, it's no surprise. he would have been in his late 20s-30s, could have suffered for a few years after setting up his machine shop before dying at what would be a tragically young age.

it's assumed, when we find out in moa, that sammy did live a long life, that gaea had just been lying for the sake of lying, trying to drag hazel's morale down. but what if she didn't know she was lying?

we know that hera had more than a small hand in leo's life. we know that sammy talked to her under the guise of callida before leo was even born. she knew about hazel and sammy's past and about the role she needed leo to play in the future. she knew that if sammy had succumbed to the curse of selling the diamond, it was very likely leo never would have been born.. so what if she somehow played the curse, wove a story where it took sammy's life, while she let him live under the shroud of that lie.

but the thing about curses is... you can't just take them away with no consequences, that's not how that works. at some point someone is going to have to pay up, something hera would be more than aware of. so she (or pluto or whoever would have control over the parameters of this curse) kept shifting the curse onto the next generation, until they got to leo. until hera had the valdez she needed. and then she let her grasp on the curse go..

and you know who died tragically in her late 20s-30s? esperanza valdez.

when thalia and bianca and hazel’s bodies are never found and never buried and those who love them (luke nico sammy) cannot lay them to rest and quite literally shape the trajectory of the world through their grief and in their absence. luke poisoning thalia’s tree nico resurrecting the wrong sister the trajectory of leo’s life and sacrifice being shaped by a girl who died a century ago because they could never stop grieving what was lost. you CAN resurrect the dead but at what cost?
