Felt the strong urge to share my chosen-name-and-pronouns headcanons for the Voices
Links to definitions under the cut:
Hero: Heidi, Librafluid Pansexual (they/she/he)
Contrarian: Misconduct (Connie for short), *Renaissancegender "DiOnYsIaN 🙄" (viva/la/revolución/any)
Paranoid: Perseus (Percy for short), Luneboy Recipromantic Demisexual (he/they/she)
Skeptic: Schuyler, Demimasculine Achillean + Femme Crossdresser (he/she)
Smitten: Sandy, Amaregender Panromantic Asexual (love/heart/mirrorpronouns)
Opportunist: Oprah, Reflective Gendered Achillean Bellusromantic Asexual (reflective pronouns)

Broken: Bronze, Ambinull Gyneflexible (any pronouns)
Stubborn: Beowulf, Bigender Nebulasexual (shi/he/she)
Cheated: Chelsea, Genderqueer Bisexual Butch (she/they/ve)
(*Renaissancegender is a gender identity I came up with myself, because I could not find a proper term for Connie nor did I want to. La gender is all about is all about pushing past the limits of what gender should be. Just completely reshaping and remolding it into nonsense but also into the true freedom to evolve.)

Sandi Hester and some birds
I Ran across Sandi a terribly charming Nashville TN artist when I subscribed to her substack An Artists life a few weeks ago. I am kind of hooked on her entertaining youtube feed. She talks about everything from art supplies to art books and how to lake the most art possible. Having fun playing in my big 8×10” Stillman and Birn alpha. Watched a youtube by Sandi Hester who said leave everything…

Time for my region, welcome to...
The Garland Region!
Tumblr media
Garland is a region known for its export of many fresh fruits, veggies, flowers, and of course; garlands! It's also home to two mystical Pokemon, rumored to have once roamed around the world performing small miracles such as curing disease and purifying toxins. Here in this region, you will find:
Hermesville: Characterized by it's small yellow-brick buildings and open area, Hermesville is the perfect place to start one's pokemon journey in Garland! It's a peaceful place home to the study of Professor Olive Leif, the Yard family, the Woods family, and the Chrysanthemum family. It's a short walk to the next town, so this place is quite small. Echotree forest is a few steps away, but those who go too deep into the forest often complain of a smell resembling bleach or rotting meat. Nobody is sure why.
Poscidryn Bay: A bustling seaside city known for it's jolly gymleader Mona Mola. This place has everything people can ask for, a sandy shoreline, a swim school, and many water type Pokemon! The gym itself has quite a wild history, as it used to be a seaside three-ring circus that belonged to a friend of the former champion Dain Slayer.
Hearthside City: The hometown of it's firey gymleader, Hester Letterman. It's also known for producing complex works of embroidery. Hester has apprenticed the current dark-type specialist of the Elite Four, Luna Sombra. Not many people live there, but it's a nice place if you like the heat!
Copius Grove: The largest place in Garland. Most of it consists of farmland and fields owned by the Leif family and a few others. Any fresh produce comes from here too! The gymleader Dimitri Leif is the person people thank for that. Aside from that, it also has the largest hospital that houses people and Pokemon within it. The air quality here is the best in the region. It also shares a water filtration system with Poscidryn Bay!
Sythia City: Home to the strongest, most active, and most competitive trainers you will ever meet. A common pastime in Sythia is to have gym battles with their local fighting type gymleader, Eris Apple. She's actually the reason why there's so many sport shops and vending machines around!
Leados Town: A place known for it's natural hot springs and earthenware goods. Their gymleader is Heath Deed, and he's apprenticed two gymleaders and is the grandfather of Benedict Deed of the Elite Four. He's built quite a legacy for himself, as well as the tallest gym!
Steambrawl Cave: Home to many powerful Pokemon, it's a favorite place for people like Eris to train, but nobody goes in often because of the hazardous conditions. People often come out needing treatment for steam burns.
Neotoxin: A company that distributes fertilizer and performs Pokemon control services. These services include the capture and relocation of Pokemon, rescuing trainers from hazardous conditions, and conducting research on pokemon. It's run by a woman named Monterra Telos, and occasionally by her son when she needs to oversee other matters. It's also part of his training to take over one day.
Sintian City: Known for sky-high apartment complexes, storage areas, tech businesses, and rooms for rent, Sintian City is the most modern city in Garland. The steel-type gymleader, Hearty Smite, is also a sight to behold. He specializes in metalwork, but spends most of his personal time making things for the champion, Angel Komoma.
Dracion City: Hometown of the former champion Dain Slayer, who is now it's dragon-type gymleader. He used to be quite prideful as champion, but he's grown to be humble as he is strong. It's an old town, but news spreads quickly there. What? It says "Dacion City?" Hey, somebody fix that!
Mt. Athenos: The place known as Athenos City resides at the foot of this mountain, which rests in the center of the Garland Region. The interior of the mountain has been divided into two main spaces; the psychic-type gym belonging to Billard Ayano, and the caverns known as Victory Climb. If a trainer can battle their way up Victory Climb, they can reach the summit where the Elite Four and Champion Champion Angel Komoma reside.
Mt. Athenos (summit): This place functions as both the living quarters for the Elites and the Champion and a battle stadium) has been dubbed "Athenos Palace." If a trainer can defeat the Elite Four, they are sheduled a battle with the champion. In preparation for this battle, a path in Victory Climb is walled off to allow the public to sit in the stadium and observe the battle.

Every October UCF celebrates Diversity Week and for 2020 it runs from October 19 – 23. The theme is Stronger Together: Unified! Connected! Family! This highlights how together we can make UCF and the surrounding community stronger and more connected with each other.
One of the fantastic things about UCF is the wide range of cultures and ethnicities of our students, staff, and faculty. We come from all over. We’re just as proud of where we are from as we are of where we are now and where we will be heading in future.
UCF Libraries is offering a full calendar of virtual Diversity Week activities from family friendly crafts to talks by area experts and film discussions. Don’t miss out on our community showcase which features UCF alumni and faculty and how they support the Knight community. We even have digital puzzles and downloadable coloring pages. And you can also add your voice to the 2020 UCF story by participating in our digital time capsule. To learn about the upcoming events visit: guides.ucf.edu/diversityweek
Join the UCF Libraries as we celebrate diverse voices and subjects with these suggestions. Click on the link below to see the full list, descriptions, and catalog links for the featured UCF Celebrates Diversity titles suggested by UCF Library employees. These and additional books are on display in the new 4th floor Reading Room.
And thank you to every Knight who works to help others feel accepted and included at UCF!
A Faithful Reading Partner: a story from a Hakka village by SuHua Huang A welcome addition to dual language literature, the story is about growing up among the Hakka people in Taiwan. In order to succeed, it is important for children to have a reading partner. But in this case, it is a dog with which the children develop deep friendships as they share their books with him. A sub-current to the main story is one of being a minority within a minority and success, which though longed for, inevitably contains sadness wrapped within its joy. Presented to UCF Libraries by the Chinese American Community in Orlando. Suggested by Sai Deng, Acquisitions & Collection Services
Discrimination and Disparities by Thomas Sowell Challenges believers in such one-factor explanations of economic outcome differences as discrimination, exploitation or genetics. It offers its own new analysis, based on an entirely different approach--and backed up with empirical evidence from around the world. The point is not to recommend some particular policy "fix", but to clarify why so many policy fixes have turned out to be counterproductive, and to expose some seemingly invincible fallacies behind many of those policies Suggested by Cynthia Kisby, Administration
Equality and Diversity: phenomenological investigations of prejudice and discrimination by Michael D. Barber Examples of prejudice against Jews, women, African Americans, and other minority groups are reported almost daily by the media. Despite educational programs to counteract prejudicial attitudes, this seemingly intractable problem remains an ongoing concern, not only in the United States but throughout the world. It is an interesting and often overlooked fact that the subject of prejudice has been the focus of major works by three prominent philosophers in the phenomenological tradition, works that still offer many insights into contemporary attempts to understand this social problem. Michael Barber examines this striking convergence of interests by these three philosophers and explores the significance of phenomenology for analyzing prejudice as expressed in anti-Semitism, sexism, and racism. Suggested by Sandy Avila, Research & Information Services
Hacking Diversity: the politics of inclusion in open technology cultures by Christina Dunbar-Hester We regularly read and hear exhortations for women to take up positions in STEM. The call comes from both government and private corporate circles, and it also emanates from enthusiasts for free and open source software (FOSS), i.e. software that anyone is free to use, copy, study, and change in any way. Ironically, rate of participation in FOSS-related work is far lower than in other areas of computing. A 2002 European Union study showed that fewer than 2 percent of software developers in the FOSS world were women. This book is an ethnographic investigation of efforts to improve the diversity in software and hackerspace communities, with particular attention paid to gender diversity advocacy. Suggested by Megan Haught, Student Learning & Engagement/Research & Information Services
Mothers Work: confronting the Mommy Wars, raising children, and working for social change by Michelle Napierski-Prancl Through a series of focus group interviews and an analysis of the media and popular culture, Napierski-Prancl explores the institution of motherhood and the arenas in which mothering occurs while analyzing how mothers feel about themselves, each other, and the culture that situates them against one another. Suggested by Megan Haught, Student Learning & Engagement/Research & Information Services
On the Freedom Side: how five decades of youth activists have remixed American history by Wesley C. Hogan As Wesley C. Hogan sees it, the future of democracy belongs to young people. While today's generation of leaders confronts a daunting array of existential challenges, increasingly it is young people in the United States and around the world who are finding new ways of belonging, collaboration, and survival. That reality forms the backbone of this book, as Hogan documents and assesses young people's interventions in the American fight for democracy and its ideals. As Hogan reveals, the the civil rights movement has often been carried forward by young people at the margins of power and wealth in U.S. society. This book foregrounds their voices and gathers their inventions--not in a comprehensive survey, but as an activist mix tape--with lively, fresh perspectives on the promise of twenty-first-century U.S. democracy. Suggested by Megan Haught, Student Learning & Engagement/Research & Information Services
Pippa Park Raises Her Game by Erin Yun Life is full of great expectations for Korean American Pippa Park. It seems like everyone, from her family to the other kids at school, has a plan for how her life should look. So when Pippa gets a mysterious basketball scholarship to Lakeview Private, she jumps at the chance to reinvent herself by following the "Rules of Cool." At Lakeview, Pippa juggles old and new friends, an unrequited crush, and the pressure to perform academically and athletically while keeping her past and her family's laundromat a secret from her elite new classmates. But when Pippa begins to receive a string of hateful, anonymous messages via social media, her carefully built persona is threatened. As things begin to spiral out of control, Pippa discovers the real reason she was admitted to Lakeview and wonders if she can keep her old and new lives separate, or if she should even try. Presented to UCF Libraries by the Chinese American Community in Orlando. Suggested by Sai Deng, Acquisitions & Collection Services
Sexuality, Equality, and Diversity by Diane Richardson and Surya Monro Investigating the dynamics of identity and sexual citizenship in a changing world, this compelling text explores key debates around human rights and representation, policy and resistance. Incorporating theory with original research, this is a thought-provoking insight into sexuality and diversity in a global age. Suggested by Sandy Avila, Research & Information Services
Shame: how America's past sins have polarized our country by Shelby Steele Part memoir and part meditation on the failed efforts to achieve racial equality in Americathis work advances Shelby Steele's provocative argument that "new liberalism" has done more harm than good. Since the 1960s, overt racism against blacks is almost universally condemned, so much so that racism is no longer, by itself, a prohibitive barrier to black advancement. But African Americans remain at a disadvantage in American society, and Steele lays the blame at the feet of white liberals. According to Steele, liberals have refused to acknowledge the country's progress over the past 50 years, in part because their notions of white guilt and black victimization help preserve their position of power over blacks. Suggested by Cynthia Kisby, Administration
The Boy Who Became a Dragon: a Bruce Lee story by Jim Di Bartolo This book presents a biography of the martial arts legend, describing his childhood in Hong Kong and how it was shaped by World War II, and his success as an international star. Presented to UCF Libraries by the Chinese American Community in Orlando. Suggested by Sai Deng, Acquisitions & Collection Services
This Promise of Change: one girl's story in the fight for school equality by Jo Ann Allen Boyce and Debbie Levy In 1956, one year before federal troops escorted the Little Rock 9 into Central High School, fourteen year old Jo Ann Allen was one of twelve African-American students who broke the color barrier and integrated Clinton High School in Tennessee. At first things went smoothly for the Clinton 12, but then outside agitators interfered, pitting the townspeople against one another. Uneasiness turned into anger, and even the Clinton Twelve themselves wondered if the easier thing to do would be to go back to their old school. This is the heartbreaking and relatable story of her four months thrust into the national spotlight and as a trailblazer in history. Suggested by Ven Basco, Research & Information Services
We Rise, We Resist, We Raise Our Voices edited by Wade Hudson and Cheryl Willis Hudson What do we tell our children when the world seems bleak, and prejudice and racism run rampant? With 96 lavishly designed pages of original art, poetry, and prose, fifty diverse creators lend voice and comfort to young activists. Suggested by Ven Basco, Research & Information Services

The 5 best midcentury modern homes for sale right now
In our House of the Day column, we cover a plethora of gorgeous homes, from elegant Gilded Age mansions to show-stopping new builds. But time and time again, some of our favorite homes for sale are of the midcentury variety.
They range in style and authenticity; some homes built in the 1950s and 1960s have been tastefully updated, while others are time capsules for the midcentury purist. We also write about midcentury modern homes from around the country—not just in ultra-hip epicenters like Palm Springs—and at all price points. Whether you’re on the hunt for a new pad or just like to window shop, here are five swoon-worthy midcentury homes on the market to check out right now.

Guests are welcomed to the Sarasota School home through an interior courtyard with pond. Photo by Glenn Johnson of Coastal Photography
Restored midcentury gem near the beach
Price: $1,695,000
Details: One of the latest Sarasota School houses to catch our eye is this three-bedroom, three-bath home in Sandy Hook, a private beachfront neighborhood on the island of Siesta Key. Siesta Key is packed with gorgeous midcentury architecture by Paul Rudolph, Victor Lundy, and Frank Folsom Smith, but this 2,550-square-foot home was designed by Siebert Architects—Sarasota’s oldest architecture firm.
The 1962 home has all the midcentury details we love, like long horizontal lines, glass walls, clerestory windows, and terrazzo floors. A covered interior courtyard features a pond, skylights, and a large dining table for entertaining, and exposed beams throughout the house contrast with the bright, airy windows. See more, over here.

Designed and built in 1965 by architect Allan Gelbin, the home follows Frank Lloyd Wright’s theories on organic architecture. Photos by Austin Eterno
A Connecticut home by a Frank Lloyd Wright apprentice
Price: $625,000
Details: This five-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath home in Weston, Connecticut, was designed and built in 1965 by architect Allan Gelbin. Gelbin was an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin East in Spring Green, Wisconsin, from 1949 to 1953, before establishing his own practice in 1957 in Connecticut.
The focal point of the design is an expansive living room and dining room that features a stone fireplace. Clerestory windows let in light, while wooden ceiling panels and built-in bookshelves add coziness. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows showcase a wraparound deck and views of the 2.25-acre property, and the master suite also offers panoramic views and access to a terrace. The A-frame style living room features walls of glass, a fireplace, exposed beams, and amazing ocean views. Photo by Marc Weisberg
Oceanfront home by Frank Lloyd Wright apprentice
Price: $14,900,000
Details: Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright apprentice Frederick Liebhardt in 1958, this four-bedroom, eight-bath oceanfront home is located above Windansea beach, an iconic surf spot made famous in the 1960s in Tom Wolfe’s nonfiction collection The Pump House Gang.
Liebhardt designed the home as a personal residence for his mother, and the house has seen two subsequent renovations—one remodel by midcentury modern architect Henry Hester and a more recent one by Hill Construction and NYC designer Eddie Lee. The house is now 6,338 square feet with a stunning A-frame living room. Huge walls of glass provide unobstructed ocean views, and the way the home is situated on its one acre lot means that you can’t see your neighbors. Find more photos, over here.

This Swiss Miss home in Pennsylvania was designed in 1958 by noted midcentury architect Jules Gregory. Michael Hirsch for Kurfiss Sotheby’s International Realty
Dazzling A-frame in Pennsylvania
Price: $3,495,000
Details: Midcentury modern homes might be known for their butterfly roofs, but the style also popularized the Swiss Miss A-frame. And while you might expect A-frames in mountain towns or midcentury hotbeds like California, check out this three-bedroom, four-bath home in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Built in 1958 by noted midcentury architect Jules Gregory, the low-lying home is bifurcated by a steep, dramatic A-frame roof that rises straight from the ground.
Inside, the A-frame creates a dramatic double-height living room with floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto the 1.42-acre property. Recent renovations brought a more contemporary feel to the space; gloss-black hardwood floors contrast with white walls, beams, and counters. Other perks include a 16-foot kitchen island, large closets, and a rear patio with bar, BBQ, fire pit, and pool. See the interiors, over here.

Beachfront midcentury time capsule
Tumblr media
Price: $1,900,000
Details: This four-bedroom, four-bath rarely seen home was the writer’s studio of Walter Farley—author of the Black Stallion book series—and was designed by Sarasota architecture icons Ralph Twitchell and Jack West. It’s a time capsule in the truest form, with original details like Ocala block construction, clerestory windows, and mahogany louvers that let in the ocean breeze.

UNDERWATER
[Mirrored on AO3]
██████ “Taz”  ██████ 2 sweeps // 5ish Earth years Llunegloirs docks
You jump into the water before one of the older kids can push you in. They’ve no patience with pupas, particularly with pupas what are scared of water -- like, you just watched a tall olive punt Hester Amayye off the dock because he was sick of Hester’s snivelling.
And, like, you could totally have told her snivelling wouldn’t help. It doesn’t matter that your whole cohort’s never been in water over your heads before, never been out of the baby hives and their shallow pools, ‘cause in a few weeks? The fishery hives are gonna pick apprentices, and nobody wants to bid on a new ‘prentice who can’t swim.
If you don’t get ‘prenticed, you’re on your own for finding a way to make money beyond whatever stipend you get, and most kids in the baby hives don’t have that big of a stipend. You certainly don’t. But it’s fine, because, like, you’ve been practicing your swimming, and how hard can it be?
You smash through the surface hard enough to hurt your stomach, but -- it’s a hot night, and the water’s deliciously cool.
Cautiously, you open your eyes -- the big kids said it would sting, but it doesn’t really. All around you, everything is blue-green and shimmery and kinda blurry? Anything more than a few feet away fades into darker blue and then into black, but you can still see okay up close. You’re already bobbing back up towards the surface, but you push yourself back down because --
You have the weirdest feeling?
Somewhere out in the deep, beyond where you can see... something is listening. You know it is. It heard you get into the water, and now all its attention is on you, which should be creepy? It’s not, though. It just feels -- focused.
It takes a lot more effort than you’d think to keep yourself from floating up, but you curl your toes into the sandy floor of the bay. The sand slides away under your feet and over on top of them until they’re buried, and then you just huddle there, hugging yourself, cheeks puffed out with air and eyes bugged out with trying to see... what? Something. Something big and old and watchful.
Besides that feeling of being noticed, you don’t see or hear anything before your lungs finally start burning and you have to claw your way to the surface again. But just for a second, just before your ears come out of the water, you think you hear a deep, old, far-off voice say Ah.
Then you pop back into the air with a splash, and Hester’s clinging to the edge of the dock and crying and the big olive is teasing her and the other pupas are trying to drag themselves out and someone says, “Hey, how long were you under?”
And that’s what you remember, mostly, of that night: you stayed under for two-and-a-half minutes, longer than everyone else in your cohort. You’re very proud of that, and it’s not until sweeps later until you remember that odd feeling, and wonder about it.
