book recs: oct/nov 2023

I read an obscene number of books during my weeks travelling in the USA, so here are some highlights!

A GENTLEMAN UNDONE by cecilia grant - I actually read all three in this excellent series, but this is the highlight. a tense, engrossing regency romance between a gentleman desperate to make money in gambling halls and the woman who teaches him to count cards, who unfortunately happens to be someone else's mistress. extremely horny and very smart.

SHADOW MAGIC by jaida jones & danielle bennett - after HAVEMERCY I desperately needed the rest of the series, and happily I had dinner with jaida and dani and was given them! this one is classic political fantasy: assassins, ambassadors, a devoted bodyguard and his beautiful prince, and a flamboyant little chaos magician who wonders why nobody else in his delegation is enjoying the beautiful local Fashion Robes. this book has never had a heterosexual thought in its entire life.

AMERICAN QUEEN by sierra simone - okay, this is a rec for the entire series (AMERICAN PRINCE & AMERICAN KING follow), a modern arthur-lancelot-guinevere retelling where they're american politicians and they're all in love and kinky and fucked up about it. mostly smut, lots of angst, occasional plot. maybe the hottest thing I've ever read in my life?? damn, sierra simone knows what she's doing.

THE MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS by robert a. heinlein - what if we were a moon colony and we decided to stage a revolutionary war and we asked a bored AI computer to run the logistics for us? I'm such a sucker for logistics, and heinlein delivers in spades. very funny, great worldbuilding, fun characters. has aged surprisingly well, I think.

10 THINGS THAT NEVER HAPPENED by alexis hall - a pure shot of gay grumpy/sunshine delivered via FAKE AMNESIA TROPE and a plot lovingly and lampshadily borrowed from the classic sandra bullock vehicle while you were sleeping. alexis hall's protagonists and glorious supporting casts always grab me, and this was no exception.

THE FALL THAT SAVED US by tamara jerée - do you like the good omens setup of bookshop angel vs. snarky demon, destined to be enemies but oh no we're in love, and you'd like to add some recovery from family trauma + sex scenes + also they're sapphic? yes. good. enjoy.

CHAIN-GANG ALL-STARS by nana kwame adjei-brenyah - holy shit!! finished this one yesterday and will be thinking about it for a long time. premise: criminals can choose to compete in deadly televised gladiator matches instead of remaining in prison. this is an absolutely brutal examination of the prison industrial complex and the violent commodification of bodies (especially bodies of colour) under our capitalist hellscape. lyrical, wonderful, cutting. very queer and very angry. I flew through it. what a fantastic book.

OC Character Ask Link Here. I'm answering questions about Cardinal Marian, Edelweiss Ghoul, Papa Camino and Mater Jocasta.

3. Did you choose their names for how it sounds or its meaning?

Marian: I chose it originally for the sound, but I seredipitously remembered the Sisters of Mercy song Marian so I will tell you that yes, I definitely named her after that! hehe

Jocasta: I wanted a regal name, but not too biblical so I went into mythology for it. Originally considered Dido (Aeneas' lover and Queen of Carthage) but it was too soft to my ears. I didn't want any specific goddess name, it's distracting. Jocasta sounds intense and the story is dramatic and profane: Jocasta was Oedipus' Queen and Mother in the myths.

They both have full legal names. That may one day be revealed!

6. Relationship with parents?

Marian: Marian was born July 25, 1978 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania USA. Marian never had contact with her father. Her mother was a person who struggled with alcoholism and so Marian spent most of her childhood under the care of her grandmother. Her grandmother was kind but was extremely critical of Marian, especially in regards to her dark interests and her weight. Marian's grandmother died when Marian was 17 and so Marian had to move back in to her mother's care. It was eighteen months of hell and she moved out with a friend as quickly as she could.

Jocasta: Jocasta was born September 1, 1942 in a small town outside of Salzburg, Austria. She was a middle child with an older and younger brother. Her family owned the town bakery. Her father was conscripted into the army and was KIA in 1943. Both sets of grandparents, two aunts, five cousins and her mother took care of her and her siblings. She had a very supportive family that encouraged her musical talent as long as she helped the family business. (One of her jobs in the Ministry before being Nihil's protegee was baking bread for the kitchens.)

9. How easily does your OC make friends?

Marian: She is very cagey about meeting new people. She has had so many friends move away in her life that she doesn't hold on to people too seriously. Until she joined the Church. Even then, she's suspicious of kindness.

Jocasta: She makes friends, a little too easily. She's definitely one that flits from friend to friend. She engages with people on a deep level but never confides in them. She has a flirtatious nature.

12: OC Best Friends? Worst Enemy?

Marian: After joining the Church, Marian befriended Papa Emeritus Secondo's primary lover Sandra. The two women became fast friends, and then more than friends. There was an awkward falling out and Marian was struggling through it when she first got involved with Copia. Marian doesn't have enemies although Sister Imperator is intimidating.

Jocasta: Jocasta had a childhood friend Elizabeth. They moved together to the city, lived and performed together. She lost contact with Elizabeth when she emigrated to the US. Jocasta's closest friend is Sorrel Ghoul, her first ghoul she summoned.

lmao reading fic? i love to go out to eat at restaurants my partner and i enjoy going around the city for that, and also i have a mechanical keyboard hobby i have an excessive amount of keyboards and used to build them (soldering and all) but they're all hotswappable these days so i don't bother. also buying books and not reading them 💁🏻‍♀️

“I just hope everything works out.”

“It will. I helped you plan it, didn’t it?” Leah says.

“That’s what worries me” I say, teasing her.

“Leah! What if someone hears you?” I whisper. We are waiting for Mason in the room they have for family and friends after the games. Today it’s been his first game of the season at Stamford Bridge, which makes my visit even more special.

“They all believe you are injured, so” she shrugs. “And you are so lucky his family couldn’t come today. I’m sure his mum would have noticed, they have like a sixth sense for these things.”

“Oh, I know. My mum asked me the other day if I was sick because my face looked different, but I told her it was just the phone’s camera, that it probably was dirty.”

“Mothers” Leah chuckles. As she says that, the door opens and Mason walks in.

“I don’t know why I’m here, no one was coming today” he says to Chilly.

“You sure, bro?” he says, nodding towards Leah and I.

“What the…” he says when he sees me. “What are you doing here?”

"Surprise!” I say. “Can I get a hug or something?"

"Of course you can!" he says, finally moving towards me and lifting me in the air.

"Careful, Mase."

"Oh, your injury. Sorry, love. How is that they let you come?"

"I don't have to rest anymore, and since I can't play and the girls are away, they didn't mind."

“Remind me to thank Real Madrid for the surprise."

"Another one?" he says, arching a brow.

"Yep. I have to go get changed."

"Oh... Is that type of surprise..." he smirks. "Should I start thinking about colours?"

"Maybe" I say, leaving the bed and going into the bathroom.

"A dressing gown again?" he says when I show up again.

"Yes. But there is something underneath it this time."

"Something I will like?"

"Hopefully. Do you want to see it?"

"Please" he says, sitting at the end of the bed.

"It's very special... I've had it for 4 months now. Are you ready?"

"Ready" he says, licking his lips.

"Surprise!" I say, my hands shaking a bit as I let my dressing gown fall to the floor, turning to the side and touching my belly so he can see the small bump.

"What the..." he says, his eyes going wide. "No. That is... You..." he says, pointing at my belly. "You are..."

"Pregnant.”

"You... are... pregnant. You are pregnant!" he says, getting up from the bed and taking a step closer towards me. "This is real, isn't it?"

"Very real, yes."

"Can I touch it?"

"Of course."

"Wow" he chuckles. "You are pregnant. Like... this is real. There is a baby there. My baby. Our baby."

"Yep. Our baby" I say, trying not to cry.

"We are having a baby... I'm going to be a dad!" he says, finally smiling while caressing my bump.

"You are going to be a dad, Mase. The best dad" I say, not being able to keep my tears away anymore. He looks so happy.

“I’ll try” he says, still smiling. “But how? When? Like..."

"Why don't we sit down and I tell you everything?"

"Yes, yes, you must rest. Wait, is this why Leah said that I should be careful?"

"It is."

"So she knows… Anyone else?"

"Sandra and Marco, but he knows just because he had to stop me from hitting the floor when I fainted after finding out."

General thoughts about the reveal on who the Maggie in the Toronto arc was?

i think its fun that she and blake are both connected (& she's the last tether blake has to anyone knowing he exists) via having both slipped through the cracks due to Whoopsie-Daisies. also say what u will about literally everything else in wb's writing but i like how girls in wildbow novels are more often than not grungy and a little weird. already talked abt the goblin thing some in the last maggiepost but i do really like the goblins. "pure distillations of the dirty abandoned scraps of the world which exist solely to kick you when you're down" is an extremely coherent and fun spin on goblins. the constant "fat = gross" associations are insufferable but the rest is solid. the padraic thing isn't one of the iterations of maggie's prophecy but it does feel fitting for her character that the girl who was initially inducted into being a practitioner via living somewhere that was slipping thru the cracks was fucked over for a Second time via slipping thru the cracks. i hope she is fucked over a Third time by it for rule of three. also i was in fact correct previously when i said this:

i also think she’s probably still in over her head without realizing. she’s manipulated into ordering someone’s murder and then is like “you know i think i can make up for this one AND go on a fun little adventure to add to my scrapbook of knowledge at the same time.” that’s not how reality works! you killed someone! and then tried to semi-earnestly befriend slash mooch from their cousin! she’s only been a practitioner for six months–i think there’s a very fundamental disconnect btwn the maggie that’s lucky enough to still have parents she can be a normal silly teenager with and the maggie that’s making forays into The World Of Backstabbing, Horror, Murder, and Fates Worse Than Death. and i think that disconnect will result in strain for her as the fact that she’s sort of doomed to do some really awful things, have some really awful things happen to her, and/or both sinks in.

except instead of just Strain. that fact had to sink in via her doing, as sandra put it, the magical equivalent of crashing a car 2 learn respect for the road. YA protagonist maggie holt died in the crash now it's just wannabe goblin queen mags scrambling 4 purchase in the wreckage. i believe in her i hope she captures sooo many crass little creatures. i'm glad that buttcheeks stuck around he's fun to watch :)

i don't feel like we actually know johannes yet. the thing about the really successful practitioners is that they're doing less Desperate Violent Scrabbling to maintain their positions and subsequently have more luxury of ostensible niceties and lofty philosophies. they should throw a bucket of mud on him and toss him to the wolves so i can see what he's like when shit gets real. also the entire arc is a really funny demonstration in how severely being a thorburn has fucked blake over. everyone is sooo much nicer to maggie than him he's out there playing on hard mode. this is what i mean when i say that alec would b a diabolist, diabolism is fundamentally abt when you are marked Rotten by the world by virtue of the family you've been born into, defined more by their legacy than by anything about yourself, even moreso than the other brands of practitionerism.

hmm anything else. oh yeah i think we should flog wildbow for crone mara. ok thats all. OH yeah and Not Being Maggie Holt Anymore is a really funny way to skip out on the other iterations of the prophecy. its that fairy bitch's problem now. i have a lot of thoughts on pact faeries but that's a post for one of the "why are pact creatures good" asks just know i'm rotating them in my mind rapidly

⭐Saint Seiya (or Knights of the Zodiac). I found this beautiful serie when I was 7 years old. My favorite is the original serie, although I also like the Lost Canvas a lot and Episode G (because Aioria is the protagonist). Soul of Gold gives me mixed feelings. From Omega and Next Dimension, better don't ask me; my mind lives in denial. My favorite characters are the Golden Saints, especially Aioros and Aioria, being Aioria my super favorite.

Thanks to Saint Seiya I developed a great love for the stars 💫 and I have many scientific books on the subject, as well as books of myths and legends about the constellations ✨.

💥 I'm a Marvel Girl. I love those tormented superheroes and antiheroes. I basically grew up watching Marvel since Iron Man came out in 2008 and I immersed myself fully in the world of the comics, I have a lot of comics and books on my bookshelf 🤭. My favorites are: Iron Man ♥️, Captain America, Spider-Man, Loki, the X-Men, Black Widow and Scarlet Witch, in all their presentations and with all their charms and defects!.

🍿Series: Friends, Full House, The big bang theory, How I met your mother and How I met your father, Modern Family, Mom, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel... I love it K-Dramas like Goblin: The lonely and great God, Crash landing on you, Tale of the Nine Tailed 😋, I have also watched many animes like Sailor Moon, Ouran High School Host Club, Toradora, Code Geass, Inuyasha, Kaleido Star, Shaman King, Attack on Titan... it's a long list and I don't remember everything at this moment 🤔. Miraculous Ladybug (I know it's for kids, but ... there is Chat Noir 🖤).

🐉In my House of the Dragon era 🖤: Like many people, I was also terribly disappointed with the horrible ending of Game of Thrones, but I really loved Fire and Blood when I read it in 2020... so I decided to give the serie a chance when I saw the first trailer... and I don't regret it! 🥳. I liked Daemon and Rhaenyra so much in the book and absolutely loved them in the TV Show! (Matt and Emma are incredible! ❣️). Another character that I loved in the book and the one I always wanted to know more about was Jacaerys Velaryon and I must say that I am very pleased with the choice of Harry Collett 😍 (oh yeah baby! 🔥).

I really hope that the directors and writers do justice to this wonderful crown prince! 🥰, because for me he is already one of my favorite characters of all time! ❣️.

🎥 Favorite Movies: Troy 2004 (did I mention I'm a Greek mythology lover?), the Star Wars saga 💫 (1-6 only), The Great Gatsby, A Walk to Remember, Harry Potter 🪄 (books and movies), The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit trilogy, The Hunger Games saga ❣️(books and movies), The Twilight saga 😊 (books and movies).

I love Studio Ghibli movies with all my heart 💗 since my dad bought me the movie of Kiki Delivery Service when I was a 6-year-old little girl.

I love everything Disney and Pixar does 💗😘. (think of the happiest things, It's the same as having wings! 🎶)

🎧 Music: I have a very varied taste in music, some would say strange 😅, but if I like the rhythm and lyrics of the song I will surely add it to my playlist (mainly I like rock), AC / DC, Queen, Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Within Temptation, Imagine Dragons, Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Lana del Rey, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. I enjoy classical music too 🩷.

Absolutely outstanding novel series, my teenage favorite, but the little changes in the movie made it even better (like eliminating the dad character to focus more on Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse). The movie in its own right is just SO. FUCKING. ICONIC. Also: the novel didn’t have Sandra Oh’s iconic moment of “Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Uh-huh…….. The Queen is coming!”

The Santa Clauses Season 2

It's here! And I have access to it, and all of my drably splintery thoughts on the first two episodes.

As an FYI, all my reviews are gonna be hella spoilery so I'll be doing all the reviewing under read mores and under the tags #TSCS spoilers and #Review2

Oh boy unsolicited thoughts HERE WE GO!

Episode 1:

I gotta say, Fluffy is not a bad character in this so far. Christmas Churros are a gold mine and I'm surprised no one has tried to capitalize on that yet.

Scott immediately assuming that Carol was going to kill Gary says a lot about the both of them and their dynamic that I wish was consistent. I love the idea that Carol is down for murder, keep that in cowards!

I have zero idea why Scott is so uptight about Riley keeping this secret when you literally gave EVERYONE IN THE WORLD MAGIC SNOW GLOBES. Nobody here is doing a good job of keeping any of this secret! No one!

And not the North Pole having a Gaslighting Department. Thats, just actually so funny to me. And you bet your sweet ass that Jack frequents that department, he might be employed there!

And once again to reiterate, these songs breaks are just NOT it. As someone who usually love musicals! The songs are mid at most and are just shoehorned into the most random places. Idk, still not vibing.

But Betty and Noel? STILL TOP TIER. I'll talk about them more in a bit, but they are literally perfect. The Blueprint. Betty and Noel get no notes from me. They made cardboard cutouts of each other's faces, like come on! They're cute as SHIT.

Mad Santa lore? Its aight. I appreciate the franchise trying to carve out its own lore after more than 15 years of inactivity. Its decent lore! For the world that it exists in at least. It's just not my personal cup of tea, and I don't see myself utilizing it in my own stories. But I appreciate that it is there.

And you cannot tell me that Jack hasn't tried to team up with Mad Santa before. It just seems like something he would do to, noticing that there was a Santa getting a bad rep and he could feasibly swoop in and break down the institution.

I wanna imagine he went up to him like, so I've heard you've been trying to subjugate a people. Here's my resume, I am all for murder, I do work well with gnomes, consider me. And then he got promptly ghosted.

Episode 2:

Bro the training vest is made out of St. Nicks robe?? What ISNT made out of that robe??? Isn't that like...an important artifact? I would assume it would be if it has that much Christmas magic in it. Why do we keep cutting it up and using it to make things? Is there any of it left?? Does it regenerate its own fabric??? None of these questions will ever be provided answers, I'm sure.

YO ITS MY BOY CUPID!!! LET'S GOOOOOOOO!!!!

Fucking LOVE Cupid! He's just as great as I remember! And because he had so little screen time, he didn't get too butchered!

And I like how he lists only specific Legends that are concerned with the succession. Implying in universe that Father Time and Tooth either think Cal is a good choice, or simply don't give a shit. And i love that for them.

But Cupid does list Sandy, EB and Mother Nature as people who do care. And we already know that were gonna get confirmed Sandy and EB cameos later, so I'm gonna CROSS MY FINGERS SO HARD for a possible Mother Nature cameo at some point. I just want her to lay down the LAW that's all I ask!

Let's how about, leave the puberty topic, out of this series entirely? Wish that whole miscommunication. DIDNT happen.

But we do have WITCH SANDRA!! This was the only possible choice for her, go off queen! Lucy and Sandra with the clasping hands meme: Teenage Girl with Magic Witch Powers. This was the best possible turn for her character, love that for you babe!

As I suspected, Befana in these episodes is a peach yet again. Fucking love Befana, no notes for her either, she's always great.

BUT LET'S TALK ABOUT NOEL AND BETTY!? and how they gave them the most romantic, whirlwind love story of the century? How they met was so FUCKING CUTE! Romeo and Juliet can pack it up! Because THEY are just better!

Betty really took one look at Noel and went, Tee hee, giggle, twirls hair, kicks feet. And I love that for her!
