PwC Great Zuurberg Trek Boasts A Sold Out Show in 2019
The 2019 PwC Great Zuurberg Trek, which takes place from the 24th to the 26th of May in the Zuurberg Mountains of the Eastern Cape, boasts a sold out field of stage race connoisseurs. In fact entries sold out within a month and given the race’s burgeoning reputation for superb riding and off-the-bike hospitality it is no surprise. There are therefore mountain bikers aplenty who will be watching jealously, from home, as the event unfolds.
When the field lines up, at the Zuurberg Mountain Inn to take on the 71 kilometre long opening stage, a number of South Africa’s top riders will be in attendance. Off the back of their stellar start to the year the race favourites are the Imbuko Giant team of Marco Joubert and Nicol Carstens. They will not have it all their own way however as the Bike Shop-SCOTT and Valley Electrical Titan Racing teams will have Joubert and Carstens in their sights. Rogan Smart and Aiden Connelly hail from Plettenberg Bay and have proved themselves a formidable combination in a number of three-day stage races over the last couple of years.
Rossouw Bekker and Marc Fourie meanwhile are still building their stage race reputations. The newly formed Valley Electrical Titan Racing squad is hungry for success though and are sure to push the more fancied Imbuko Giant team throughout the three days. Also lining up in the elite men’s category are the Exxaro Development Team, of Lucky Mlangeni and Shaun Baloyi, Team Engeli’s Richard Allan and Bruce Campbell, and the Saddle and Cleats combination, of Jason Peach and Andre Nelson.
The mixed category is headlined by the popular Team Garmin duo, Yolandi du Toit and Ben Melt Swanepoel; while the women’s race features none other than the South African marathon champion Robyn de Groot. De Groot is still finding her fitness and form after an iliac artery surgery in January. She returned to racing the week before the PwC Great Zuurberg Trek with a remarkably strong showing at the KAP sani2c and is cautiously building back towards her best.
No South African mountain bike race would be complete without the presence of a Springbok rugby player on the start line. Corné Krige ensures the PwC Great Zuurberg Trek is no exception and the former Bok captain will line up alongside Llewellyn de Wet.
On the bike three fantastic days of riding await the participants. Stage 1 explores the Sundays River Valley region to the south of the race village. Stage 2 heads north into the Zuurberg Mountains and provides a spectacular 360 degree view over the Great Karoo and back towards the Indian Ocean far to the south from the highest point of the race. The third and final stage is the shortest of the event and is filled with scintillating singletracks, rewarding riders and ensuring they will depart with broad grins on their faces. In total the event takes in 209 kilometres of riding and an accumulated 4 250 metres of climbing.
Returning riders will be thrilled to read that the route has been updated and refined for the 2019 edition. In particular more singletrack has been aded to compliment the already famous sections in the Hayterdale trail network. Trails like Rollercoaster, The Gorge, Corkscrew, Rabbit Hole and Trevor’s Surprise will keep riders smiling from ear-to-ear.
Off the bike the PwC Great Zuurberg Trek is a completely wallet free event. From the moment riders cross the finish line of each stage their every need is taken care of. First Choice chocolate milks kick start the recovery process before Darling Brew craft beers or Beefeater Gins, blended to perfection with Fitch & Leedes mixers, ensure everyone enjoys a relaxed afternoon in the beautiful race village. The Zuurberg Mountain Inn provides four star hospitality throughout; proving to be far more than just the base camp from which the region can be explored by mountain bike.
Mountain biking fans can follow the action from the 2019 PwC Great Zuurberg Trek on the event’s social media channels. Race updates and insights into the luxurious stage race life at the event can be found on by following @zuurbergtrekker on Twitter and @great_zuurberg_trek on Instagram. Highlights and photo galleries from each stage of the race will be uploaded daily to the Great Zuurberg Trek Facebook page, so be sure to like it to see what you are missing. Mist and rain no dampener for Glencairn Trail Run
The Glencairn Trail Run took place on Glencairn Farm in the Underberg area of Kwa-Zulu Natal over the weekend of 12-14 October, and despite rainy conditions on the first day, runners enjoyed the southern Drakensberg trails, a weekend away camping, and for some, a party with live entertainment on the Saturday night.
Underberg local Phillip Shezi took the Men’s title in what is known as the Ram Run, which consists of a 21 kilometre stage on the Saturday and an 18 kilometre on the Sunday, in a GC time of 2:44:37. Phillip came third in last year’s Sani Stagger and says he is looking to win the 2018 event in November.
Simon Purdon from Hilton was second with 2:47:57 and Durban’s World Champion paddler Hank McGregor came third with a time of 2:54:09. Hank said of the weekend: “It was a great two days out, a little wet underfoot on the first day, but stage 2 was beautiful. It was a bit misty so we did not get the same sightseeing that we did last year. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it’s a great family affair and I recommend it to everyone. We’ll be back next year.”
Megan Liebetrau from Umhlanga won the Ram Run Women’s race with a GC time of 3:15:51, Harriet Kingston came second in 3:28:06 and Michelle de Montille was third with 3:30:23.
Megan enjoyed the Saturday night entertainment as much as the running and said: “It’s always one of my favourite weekends of the entire year, I love Glencairn so much. This year was a bit different with the weather, but we had an awesome time on the muddy switchbacks. We can always count on the biggest jol on the Saturday, although it does make the Sunday a bit tougher. I just loved it and was happy to come out with a good result.”
What makes Glencairn Trail Run so accessible to families and groups of friends, is that there is a Lamb Run, with distances of 12 kilometres on the Saturday and 8 kilometres on the Sunday. Children as young as 8 finished the Lamb Run, and families camping together had some family members running and others enjoying the farm while waiting for the runners to finish.
In the Men’s Lamb Run, Arnold Scot came first with a GC time of 1:40:27, Ross Palframan came second (1:41:19) and Jonty Smith came third (1:46:38). In the Women’s Lamb Run, Abigail Peters was first (1:55:21), Sarah Bingham was second (2:06:29) and Minette van den Berg was third (2:09:04).
The Glencairn Trail Run was established in 2016 with 125 runners taking part, and it has grown into one of the most popular trail running stage races in KZN with 750 runners this year enjoying a fully catered weekend camping on the farm.
Glencairn Farm is the home of the sani2c mountain bike stage race that takes place in May each year, and with the race village on the farm catering for 4200 riders over 5 days of sani2c, the farm has developed infrastructure such as a huge shed for dining, a comfortable chill zone and permanent toilets and hot showers.
This is definitely an event to diarise for next year – watch Glencairn Trail Run social media channels for an announcement when entries open, as this year’s event was sold out with a long waiting list.
