Sega Saturn - Jungle Park Saturn Island Gentei Special Package-ban
Title: Jungle Park Saturn Island Gentei Special Package-ban / ジャングルパーク ~サターン島~
Developer/Publisher: BMG Japan / Digitalogue / Saru Brunei / Digitalware
Release date: 15 January 1998
Catalogue No.: T-18009G
Genre: Adventure
I gave this game a good hour's play this afternoon yet couldn't really figure out what the point of it was. It may be good but so far it's as dull as hell. Probably best to avoid this. All you do is travel from one pre-rendered area to another while solving puzzles.
This is basically identical to the original release apart from coming with a monkey key holder and special booklet that you can see below.

Today I Learned Something Interesting About The Guy Who Made Cubivore
The above hails from pretty much the only playthrough channel I subscribe to; one half of the dynamic duo that is the Retro Pals, Danny Cowan, is a fellow GameSetWatch-er, so there’s that. Though when him and Alex say they play obscure video games, they play obscure video games. Like the Sega Saturn version of Jungle Park.
So here’s what you should know about the video, be it a fact that’s revealed or my own two cents…
- Jungle Park is yet another perfect example of the wild, wild west that was Japanese video games, circa the 32/64-bit era, which is my absolute favorite period of gaming. Was quite pleased to hear it being compared to Segare Ijiri, since I too was reminded of it.
- Jungle Park is also one of those games that I remember seeing just sitting there in a Chinatown game shop for literally years, with its cover getting increasingly damaged by direct sunlight. Despite the appealing the cover, it was pretty clear from the back that you needed to known Japanese, plus the price never went down (despite said sun damage), hence why I never broke down and picked up a copy. In fact, $20 says you can grab it at J&L right now, and it’s a safe bet that the asking price is still more than the $1 Danny paid on eBay.
- K, enough chitchat, time for the actually useful info: Jungle Park was developed by Saru Brunei, which later produced (you guessed it) Cubivore. Given the similarity of the art styles, I feel a dumb for not realizing it myself. The studio was helmed by a former game designer at Nintendo, Gento Matsumoto, who was Shigeru Miyamoto's right-hand man for 15 years? That fact alone makes me wonder why I haven’t heard of Matsumoto name before, at least among diehard Nintendorks who can actually differentiate which internal studio did what game (true, I know what Sega AM did what, but at least those divisions were numbered).
- Time for the really interesting bit; prior to producing Jungle Park, Matsumoto spent late 1994 to early 1995… about six months… in jail. Why? According to an interview that is no longer online, but was quoted in an old LiveJournal post: “I committed every crime a driver can... except running someone over." The author of the LJ post notes, “Actually, his crime seems mostly to have been driving persistently without a license”, and also adds, “Today, [Matsumoto] recommends a short spell in jail as a mind-focusing exercise… you certainly don't take anything for granted after a spell inside.”
- The LJ post hails from 2009 and speaks of Matsumoto’s most recent (at the time) venture, BCCKS, which is “a service that will let you make your own magazine, novel, illustrated book, photo book or diary” according to the website. Was shocked to discover that it still operates to this very day! Though proceed with caution; some naked animu chicks instantly jumped out at me.
- Regarding the Retro Pals channel itself, another reason why I actually like it a lot? There’s a chat box and it’s filled with actual decent human beings, with interesting things to share. And not the toxic waste that you want to STFU like pretty much every other stream.
- That final Jungle Park game, both the music and sound effects, sounds so very Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.
