Surrounded by all those lads, in the centre is #SavitaHalappanavar, who died of sepsis in Galway in 2012 when she was refused an abortion for an unviable pregnancy.
Her death gave focus to the pro-abortion campaign in Ireland, ultimately leading to the 2018 referendum that repealed the 8th amendment.
I drew Savita when #RoeVWade was overturned by #Dobbs in June. (at 2022) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm1OUgWMjhx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I can't attend today's vigil for #SavitaHalappanavar, who died of sepsis in Galway five years ago after being denied an abortion while she was miscarrying, but I am there in spirit. I thought of her more than once during my own pregnancy here in Galway (I had a grand time teaching in this shirt), and while I am very grateful for the public maternity scheme, there is not true reproductive justice in Ireland until we #repealthe8th .

A Polish woman, pregnant at 22 weeks, died because she was denied an abortion. The amniotic fluid was gone, and the doctors did not do anything because they waited for the foetus' heartbeat to stop. The woman died. This was today released by the family's lawyer and many are lighting a candle for her.
Only yesterday, we remembered Savita Halappanavar #savitahalappanavar and her circumstances in Ireland, which were very similar. These deaths are avoidable. Polish activists are using the hashtag #anijednejwiecej which means #notonemore

On international women's day we wear black! I stand in solidarity with all those who have been let down by their country, I stand in solidarity with all of those who are protesting today around Ireland, and I stand in solidarity with the women who we have lost. This isn't just about bodily autonomy but about bring women (and through that men) to being equal citizens in our country! We need equal rights for all, we need to stop the abuses of power that the church and the government has put in place. We need to #repealthe8th #strike4repeal #ripthe8th #repeal #savitahalappanavar

Savita Halappanavar, a 31 year old dentist, died of sepsis in University Hospital Galway in 2012 when she was refused an abortion for an unviable pregnancy, because Irish law forbade it. She had been told that “Ireland is a Catholic country”. Her tragic death gave focus to the pro-abortion campaign in Ireland, ultimately leading to the 2018 referendum that repealed the 8th amendment to the Irish constitution, which gave equal rights to life to the unborn. Legislation permitting abortion was passed in December 2018. Savita should have been given the life-saving medical care she needed. All women have the right to bodily autonomy. #savitahalappanavar #abortionrights #abortionishealthcare #roevwade #repealthe8th #artonpaper #brushpen #watercolour https://www.instagram.com/p/CfNEYeGsilE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
