um, lmao. way more than i thought i would. i also didn't realize it was quite so many. i tend to write short lil plot bunnies to get them out of my mind, and i guess they added up.

Did you take any writing risks this year?:

i don't know if i necessarily pushed myself out of my comfort zone significantly, but i did write david POV a few times, my most difficult POV.

honestly, my biggest writing risk was writing so much in such little time. starting with tropefest, i got into the dangerous habit of writing the bulk of my fest fics during the fest itself, then submitting via extension. i managed okay and the works turned out well, but it wasn't enjoyable. i'm going to try not to do that again.

(oh, i did write about death, which isn't my usual thing. [you'd always go past where our feet could touch - mind the tags!])

Most fun fic to write:

salt air and the rust on your door was an amazing collaboration with @schitthappens, Amanita_Fierce, @schittposting, @roguebebe, and @sunlightsymphony. producing it for elevate was a lot of work, but it bonded us all together and deepened in our friendships in a way that paralleled the ongoings of the fic.

i also collaborated with a lot of those usual suspects (@schittposting, Amanita_Fierce, @rhetoricalk, @sunlightsymphony) on measure by measure (stevie/alexis/twyla band au) and had a blast composing and playing music for the pod in addition to writing.

Biggest surprise:

i went from 'ruth? who's ruth?' to 'i would die for ruth!!' in 0-60. show this town how to kiss these stars (ruthie's first date) holds a very special place in my heart; it felt very natural to develop my characterization of ruth, and i'm really happy with how this turned out.

also, i remain deeply honored (and, still, surprised) by all of the people who took the time to make podfics of my work this year. thank you ❤️

Do you have any fanfic/podfic goals for the new year?

finish you and i and nobody else (the twylexis bach au). make more music fics/pods with my friends. help twylexis surpass 350 fics and ruthie surpass 150. lessen my fest participation to help my sanity. write more long-form fics.

I've noticed the pace of new fics on AO3 really slowing down. I guess that's to be expected a year after the show ended. Makes me sad though, it feels like everything is really winding down now. I guess the CSAs will be the very last thing. The actual end of the show was hard but it was so beautiful that there was joy in it. It's just now that I'm grieving, I think.

i’ve felt like things have slowed down a bit lately, too, but i don’t necessarily think that it’s entirely due to things winding down either. for one, tropefest is coming up, with fics due this weekend, and things always seem to lull just a bit before a fest since authors are often concentrating on finishing their works for that rather than other things. plus as the weather warms up, people tend to not spend as much time at home (even in these covid-y times) and therefore maybe aren’t spending as much time writing as they were over the heart of winter, etc. and the pace of things just generally ebbs and flows over time anyway. some of it could be due to a wind down, but i don’t think we’ve reached the start of the end of sc fic just yet either

either way, there are things you can do about this. one of course would be to write some fic yourself, though i know not everyone is necessarily a writer. the other is to be sure that you’re supporting fic writers by leaving them comments, reblogging their posts to help others find their work, etc. do what you can to visibly and vocally show your support for the fic you enjoy reading because nothing keeps an author going like positive feedback. and as much as we all write for the sake of it—because we have stories to tell and we enjoy telling them—at some point, if no one is responding, we’re not gonna be as committed to telling new stories anymore either. so let authors know that you’re still out here reading and enjoying what they write, and they’ll be more likely to write you more things to read and enjoy.

and as we come to the end of awards season with the CSAs and annie’s mtv awards nom, it’s def natural to feel that things are drawing to more of a close since the general focus on the show is going to fade some with it, and it’s def okay to be sad about that. but just like the actual finale, there’s joy in that, too. the cast are going on to make other things for us to love. new people will continue to find the show long after the accolades die down and their enthusiasm will remind us of all the things we love about it. and of course it will still be there for us to revisit whenever we need a pick-me-up (and so will all our favorite fics). 💗

Hi what is a whump?

Actually, would you mind going over the schitt's Creek fic fest names and what they entail?

Hi there! Whump is a term that's generally used to describe a fic that includes some kind of pain, whether it be physical or mental. Some people use it interchangeably with angst and for others it's a more distinct difference.

Whump isn't just a SC fandom thing, it's everywhere and has been around for quite a long time. Whumptober is kind of a blanket fandom fest (along with things like Kinktober, Flufftober, etc.) that you can find in many different fandoms.

The Schitt's Creek fandom has had several fests - SportsFest, FrozenOver, Season Seven, Passions and Pastimes, TropeFest, Elevate, Reel, etc) and those happen at the discretion of the fest organizers.

If there is a list or calendar of fic fests, we don't know about it, but we would love to share it if it's out there.

Did you write more/less fic than you thought you would this year, or about what you expected? Hmm, this was my first full year of writing so I guess I went at about the pace I expected? Although seeing it all at the end of the year now it seems like a LOT!

What’s your favorite story you wrote this year? Ooh! Definitely Lie With Me And Just Forget The World that I wrote for tropefest! I am such a sucker for Chasing Cars and high school AUs and I'm super proud of the ending.

Did you take any writing risks this year? To me and my low self esteem posting literally anything feels like a risk, but RPF especially. In the bigger SC (show) fandom it seems like you get the majority of kudos at the beginning and a few trickling in after the first few days, but with RPF (again, my perception) kudos kinda slowly accumulate over time (or does everyone there hate me???). So I'll check on an RPF story after a day and have like, 2 kudos and 100 hits. But you'll have to pry Dan/Noah from my cold, lifeless hands when I die.

Biggest disappointment: So, "disappointment" seems a bit extreme but I was really hoping to get more hits on 25. I worked so, SO hard on all the code and connecting all the storylines together and I really thought it would be one of my standout works. I don't want to sound ungrateful or anything because I did get so many truly lovely comments and reblogs and bingo recs but I gotta say it was a little sad to see it at the very bottom of my stats page. But those who did read it were SO supportive and for you I am thankful! 😍💜

Biggest surprise: Probably you're everything that feels like home to me. I honestly thought this would get lost in the chaos of Passions & Pastimes, especially being a short G-rated story with a subject (photography) that I didn't expect much interest in. But it ended up being my third most popular fic this year!

ALSO! I got some cards through the holiday card exchange complimenting my artwork and writing! And holy shit is that the best feeling ever!!

Do You Have any fanfic/podfic goals for the new year? Umm, mostly to make friends? Haha. I am supremely terrible at not just meeting people but also maintaining friendships so we'll see how that goes. Will a friendly person adopt this socially anxious introvert?

I also have a WIP that I'm super excited about that's shaping up to be a pretty long multi-chapter fic, and I've written like, two of those in my lifetime.

Alexis' P.O.V.: come home to my heart (General Audiences, 1,822 words) - a very sweet post-canon fic featuring Alexis and Ted in NYC.

Set in SC: When they sent home the horses and the rodeo clowns (Mature, 3,376 words) - a very funny post-canon David/Patrick fake divorce fic (reading about David and Patrick trying to pretend to be divorced while still being very much in love was very amusing and sweet).

Platonic Tropes: The Guestbook of David and Patrick Rose-Brewer (Teen And Up Audiences, 900 words) - told entirely through messages from various guests at David and Patrick's wedding; the characterization in this fic is so good!

Canadian Tropes: Close Encounters of the Alces Kind (General Audiences, 1,174 words) - a short, very funny post-canon David/Patrick fic with perfectly in-character text messages.

Multiple Chapters: Easiest decision of my life (Explicit, 7,191 words) - a very interesting time loop fic featuring an alternate take on S05E13 The Hike with a very sweet ending.

Hey gang! Things have continued to be a bit quieter on the rare/gen front as authors in the SC fandom prep for @sctropefest, including your rec blog mods. There weren't too many fics posted in the first half of April, so we're going to do a single rec list for April, to be posted in early May.

The good news is that SC Tropefest will begin posting April 28, and we expect to see many rare/gen fics there! We will still do a rare/gen roundup after that fest finishes as well, like we did for @scseason7!
