I wish I could be into my own culture in the way some Americans are. Like spouting off Lore and Quirky Factoids like Scotland is Middle Earth. It seems so joyous and insane. I saw a Reddit post of a woman determined to visit Inverness for Hallowe’en because she thought it would be amazing because of the gaelic Samhain roots…if only 😩

We have a new guy in the workshop, he used to be a scaffolder.

I think one of the people in the workshop just assumed he was gay and for whatever reason, she holds this very odd preconceived notion that "almost all scaffies are gay" (which, what?).

She came over to my area and asked in hished tones "Did he really tell you he was gay?"

I turned around, called the lad by name and simply asked "how long you and your boyfriend been together?" I held up five fingers to my chest, just out of eye line, which he completely ignored but matter of factly replied "Three."

She was stunned. Took her little fact and wandered off again.

She returned later to ask me if it was true, I asked why it even mattered at all. I can't remember anything else form the conversation, i thnk i just deflected and changed the subject.

I have no idea why we did that, or why he played along so impeccably. Hes been with us only 2 days and has gelled with the team quite nicely.

My art studio is the scruffy old kitchen table in our living room (yes it's still the kitchen table, it's older than me and has always been a kitchen table, its current location is immaterial), or if I'm using oils, the scaffy old desk in the freezing garage.

It's normal.

shout out to the artists who's "art studio" is just their ugly ass cluttered bedrooms. those aesthetic art studios in instagram with hundreds of perfectly organized copic markers are not real it can't hurt you

Then came the prep and paint. Added new storage holes and sealed many found during the prep work. Made new king plank (Floor Plank). Sealed everything in epoxy first.

Kari caught Mark on the landing, just before he entered his room. “Hey, want to come with me for backup?”

Mark hesitated, glancing back at her. “What have you done?”

“Nothing! I just – have to tell Thornton something and I’m reasonably sure that she’s going to be mad about it, so I would like. Backup.”

“Is this the sort of backup that gets me in trouble for you?” Mark slid his bag from his shoulder and tossed it into his room, not even flinching at the thud it made.

“No. Promise.” Kari held up her pinkie finger.

“That’s for swearing, not for promises.” Mark left his door hanging open and re-joined her at the top of the stairs. “So. What are you going to tell her?”

“That I’m not going to uni and I’m planning to drop out at the end of fifth year.”

Mark blinked at her. “Well,” he said slowly, “At least you’re not planning to drop out in the middle of fifth year.”

“I could do that?”

“Please don’t, I think she might actually do something we all regret.”

Kari laughed. “Hopefully, it’ll be fine.”

“Sure. That’s why you’re taking me for backup.” Mark followed her down the stairs. “And why you’re doing this while she’s cooking. You are aware there are sharp objects in the kitchen, right?”

“Sure, but she’ll be cooking. Can’t not focus on that.”

“Why aren’t you getting Katie to back you up?”

“Because Katie also thinks this is a bad idea.” Kari rolled her eyes. “Something to do with throwing away my future, I think. I don’t know.”

“You didn’t listen to your girlfriend?” Mark let out a mock gasp. “That’s terrible.”

“Yeah, well–” Kari stopped as she entered the kitchen. “Hey, Thornton.”

“Hello Kari, Mark. How was school today?”

Mark shrugged, boosting himself up to sit on one of the tall stools at the breakfast bar. “Oh, you know. Standard. Boring.”

“Tell me about it.” Casey was already sitting there, pens in hand as he drew over a piece of paper. He heaved a huge dramatic sigh, not lifting his head.

Kari snorted, trying not to laugh too hard at him.

“Had a hard day, kiddo?” Mark ruffled his hair.

“School’s so boring, why can’t I just be a binman? I want to be a binman.”

“And drive the great scaffie carts at weird hours of the morning?”

Casey nodded. “And then I’d want to go to bed earlier.”

Thornton laughed. “Is that so?”

“I think that’s generally how it works.” Kari nodded. “I always want to go to bed early when I have to get up in the morning.”

“Is that so?” Thornton shot her an amused glance.

Kari shrugged.

“That’s what the coffee is for,” Mark whispered to Casey.
