Starbucks is experimenting with 'scanless checkout' for drive-through users
Starbucks is testing a new way for customers to pay for their favorite beverages — without even having to pull out their phone. The company confirmed an internal test of “scanless pay,” a new contactless checkout method that would leverage a Starbucks app’s user’s current geolocation to identify them in the drive-through lane so they wouldn’t have to pull out their phone to pay. The experience is…

The search function says I didn’t ask this before, but while mutacons don’t have a technical altmode, they can still alter their shape a bit, right? What are the limits? Camouflage? Climbing aids? Shields and crude weapons/tools? Barely functional wings that don’t allow flight Or gliding, but can prevent deaths from falling?
either tumblr's search function is failing as usual, or i genuinely hadn't posted this bit on Mutacons yet!
Makeshift is a Mutacon, which means they are basically half a person in the eyes of functionism. Their t-cog is mutated and their protoform extra flexible, which may have made them a triple-changer if conditions were right, but instead they emerged from their hotspot as a newspark and never developed an alt mode. Their kibble has no coherency, so if they try to transform, it only ends in painful spasms and a nonfunctional, random alt mode that they can’t stay in for very long. However, they do have an inbuilt function that no other Cybertronians have: the ability to trans-scan. For a short amount of time, they can take on the alt mode of another minibot after scanning them. Thanks to the fluidity of their protoform, they can even shapeshift their features to a small degree, which makes it easy to conceal or even steal an identity for as long as the scan lasts. For Mutacons of larger size classes, they can compress themselves down, depending on their strength and durability, and an extremely talented one may be able to go from size 5 to an unnaturally dense and heavy minibot. Mass cannot increase, however, so Makeshift will never scan larger than a minibot. The lack of an alt mode doesn’t actually impact their health very much, but it makes them seem functionless, and thus worthless. To another Cybertronian, their kibble makes it very obvious that they’re a Mutacon, which earns a lot of instant dislike or distaste from the general populace. Despite the fact that Mutacons are incredibly rare and perhaps one in a thousand commit identity theft, they’ve been branded as untrustworthy freaks. Makeshift is honestly lucky to have a home, instead of being thrown out to live on the streets like many mecha who were forged with a disability.
here's a quick n dirty example to show what they can make out of their kibble-
Tumblr media
their normal shape is the one that their frame reverts to naturally and can stay in without strain, their "default" body. usually, playing around with their shape has no particular purpose, and thus doesn't have any more of a theme or coherent form than usual, as on the right. they don't often mess around with their shape for fun, though, as this can get paranoid bigots accusing them of trying to steal identity or pass themselves off as another frametype. on the left is what they look like when actually trying to do just that and pretend for awhile that they aren't a Mutacon. it takes practice to shape kibble in a way that successfully imitates a vehicle in a way that looks natural and transformable instead of just bolted on. it might not be super obvious to us, but Cybertronians naturally have an eye for kibble and alt modes, so actually passing as another frametype isn't easy.
holding a shape other than their natural frame for very long takes effort and a degree of concentration, and doing it too long can hurt. they also can't change their colors or optics. Makeshift's personal range of shifting ability gets pretty well broadened by the bleedover of Sixshot's powers. Transmutate is also a Mutacon, in fact from the same group home as Makeshift is, and she messes with her kibble to stim sometimes
this is all manual shifting, without trans-scanning. what trans-scanning does is give the t-cog a template to work off of, which then patterns the entire frame's kibble accordingly, although colors and optics are again left unchanged, small details are often just a bit off, and the voice and mannerisms would have to be deliberately imitated. trans-scanning is a bit invasive though, sort of like if someone were to use "x-ray vision" to peer under clothing and inspect organs. it's part of an inbuilt neurological sensory suite which Mutacons are forged with, a mutation in the processor's morphcore that they have to deliberately trigger, scan a single target, and shift their frame to match (some Mutacons are forged without the ability to trans-scan, making them effectively doubly disabled). this is a more drastic change than scanless shifting, which means it's a greater strain and will take more energy to hold on to, not to mention the social backlash and stigma against it. most Mutacons rarely if ever trans-scan anyone because of this ingrained fear culture has built around them. some people claim Mutacons should be classified as modal frames, but since functionism is founded upon assigning value by function, and they have no alt mode to function with, it's much easier to shove them to the very corners of society instead of acknowledging that they're simply forged differently than most.
so! to answer your question finally, it depends on the individual Mutacon's flexibility and staying power, but most of the things you listed are at least plausible! you might could say they're the only ones with real inbuilt weaponry anymore, because if necessary they could turn their kibble into a facsimile of a sword. the greatest downside to a Mutacon using their abilities to the fullest would not be the physical ramifications or limitations, but rather the social stigma. in fact, if Mutacons were encouraged to practice and push their limits instead of shunned and watched, they might have a much greater range of shifting ability than they do now.

Wasn't this question a part of the "leftover" questions that the IRs claimed Kubo answered in the 2008 American SJ interview and they said that they will provide the scans for them but they never did? It's been 14 years now and the scans never appeared, lol.
Anyways, let's give them the benefit of the doubt again and say that Tite Kubo in his one and only visit to the US, was asked that question by the "American SJ reporter" (are you planning on making Ichigo and Rukia a couple), like what kind of question is that, and what do you expect the author to answer? Are you expecting him to tell you, Yes I'm going to do that, or No I'm not going to do that? He was asked about the nature of their relationship and he said it's not romance, is that not enough for you? You want him to share with you what he's planning to do or not in his story? Imagine walking up to the author and asking him, are you going to kill Kenpachi? Are you going to make Ichigo and Orihime a couple? Are you going to give Tatsuki powers? Are you going to give the main cast kids? How old was this reporter lol? Imagine the entitlement, imagine expecting the author to give you a clear answer to such questions about his story, imagine expecting the author to share with you what he's planning to do in his story, like who are you? One of his editors or a member of his staff? Of course he will say that he won't confirm or deny anything, like what else did you expect the author to say? Share with you this epilogue related type of information? Stop for a moment and think about it people lol. Instead of asking him such childish questions, try to learn the concept of connecting the dots and stop wanting to be spoon fed information, he tells you explicitly it's not romance, an 2006 radio show where Morita said that Kubo told him Orihime is the heroine, 2001 pilot chapter with obvious hints that Orihime is the love interest, Kubo talking about the first Orihime design and mentioning again her heroine status, not to mention all the hints written in the manga, connect the dots and stop bothering the author lol, but of course, like usual, let's ignore all of that and let's build this hope that we might be right just because the author did the right thing and avoided sharing what he's planning to do in his story with the reporter on this sourceless, scanless interview shared on IR forums.
And a word of advice to the new fans, everything that the IRs claim must be double checked, never forget the "Death saves the strawberry" novel incident on the deathberry forum, never forget the rumors spread and the mistranslations, always double check.
Hello. That anon is talking about another part of the interview, where he was asked if they would get together and he just said I’m not going to confirm or deny that and then laughs. I don’t remember if this came before or after the platonic statement.
From googling, it looks as if IR shippers claim that Kubo said that in a shonen jump interview, not the FtB interview. But again, all I can find is the same quote copy and pasted on IR forums and fansites without any legitimate source?

Meet Caper, the AI self-checkout shopping cart
The Amazon boogie-man has every retailer scrambling for ways to fight back. But the cost and effort to install cameras all over the ceiling or into every shelf could block stores from entering the autonomous shopping era. Caper Labs wants to make eliminating checkout lines as easy as replacing their shopping carts while offering a more familiar experience for customers.
The startup makes a shopping cart with a built-in barcode scanner and credit card swiper, but it’s finalizing the technology to automatically scan items you drop in thanks to three cameras and a weight sensor. The company claims people already buy 18 percent more per visit after stores are equipped with its carts.
Today, Caper is revealing that it’s raised a total of $3 million including a $2.15 million seed round led by prestigious First Round Capital and joined by food-focused angels like Instacart co-founder Max Mullen, Plated co-founder Nick Taranto, Jet’s Jetblack shopping concierge co-founder Jenny Fleiss, plus Y Combinator. Caper is now in two retailer in the NYC area, though it plans to use the cash to expand to more and develop a smart shopping basket for smaller stores.
“If you walked in to a grocery store 100 years ago versus today, nothing has really changed” says Caper co-founder and CEO Lindon Gao. “It doesn’t make sense that you can order a cab with your phone or go book a hotel with your phone, but you can’t use your phone to make a payment and leave the store. You still have to stand in line.”
Autonomous retail is going to be a race. $50 million-funded Standard Cognition, ex-Pandora CTO Will Glaser’s Grabango, and scrappier startups like Zippin and Inokyo are all building ceiling and shelf-based camera systems to help merchants keep up with Amazon Go’s expanding empire of cashierless stores. But Caper’s plug-and-play cart-based system might be able to leapfrog its competitors if its easier for shops to set up.
“I don’t have an altruistic reason to care about retail, but I really want to put a dent in the universe and I think retail is severely under-innovated” Gao candidly remarked. Most founders try to spin a “super hero origin story” about why they’re the right person for the job. For Gao, chasing autonomous retail is just good business. He built is first startup in gaming commerce at age 14. The jewelry company he launched at 19 still operates. He went on to become an investment banker at Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan but “I always felt like I was more of a startup guy.”
Caper was actually a pivot from his previous entry to the space called QueueHop that made cashierless apparel security tags that unlocked when you paid. But during Y Combinator, he discovered how tough it’d be to scale a product that require a complete rethinking of a merchant’s operations flow. So Gao hoofed it around NYC to talk to 150 merchants and discover what they really wanted. The cart was the answer.
V1 of Caper’s cart lets people scan their items’ barcodes and pay on the cart with a credit card swipe or Apple/Android Pay tap with their receipt emailed to them. But each time they scan, the cart is actually taking 120 photos and precisely weighing the items to train Caper’s machine vision algorithms in what Gao likens to how Tesla is inching towards self-driving.
Soon, Caper wants to go entirely scanless, and sections of its two pilot stores already use the technology. The cameras on the cart will use image recognition matched with weight sensor to identify what you toss in your cart. You shop just like normal but then just pay and leave with no line. Caper pulls in a store’s existing security feed to help detect shoplifting, which could be a bigger risk than with ceiling and shelf camera systems, but Gao says it hasn’t been a problem yet. He woudn’t reveal the price of the carts but said “they’re not that much more expensive than a standard shopping cart. To outfit a store it should be comparable to the price of implementing traditional self-checkout.” Shops buy the carts outright and pay a technology subscriptions but get free hardware upgrades.
Caper hopes to deliver three big benefits to merchants. First, they’ll be able to repurpose cashier labor to assist customers so they buy more and keep shelves stocked, though eventually this technology is likely to eliminate a lot of jobs. Second, the ease and affordable cost of transitioning means businesses will be able to recoup their investment and grow revenues as shoppers buy more. And third, Caper wants to share data its carts collect on routes through the store, shelves customers hover in front of, and more with its retail partners so they can optimize their layouts.
One big advantage over its ceiling and shelf camera competitors is that Caper’s cart can promote deals on nearby or related items. In the future, it plans to add recommendations based on what’s on your cart to help you fill out recipes. ‘Threw some chips in the cart? Here’s where to find the guacamole that’s on sale.’ A smaller hand-held smart basket could broaden Caper’s appeal beyond grocers amongst littler shops.
Gao says that with merchants already seeing sales growth from the carts, what keeps him up at night is handling Caper’s supply chain since the product requires a ton of different component manufacturers. The startup has to move fast if it wants to be what introduces Main Street to autonomous retail. But no matter what gadgets it builds in, Caper must keep sight of the real-world stress their tech will undergo. Gao concludes “We’re basically building a robot here. The carts need to be durable. They need to resist heat, vibration, rain, people slamming them around. We’re building our shopping cart like a tank.”
