Grian's still soul-linked to Scar, even after their return from Double Life. He's not dealing with it particularly healthily, but after three death games, who would be in the best frame of mind?

(so beside myself with the implications of grian still being bound to scar after double life HO HO BOY... plus scar's agony at unknowingly hurting grian WOOF LOVE IT)

Grian and Scar deal with some of the fallout from Last Life.

(HRGERKGRKGERK this fic hurts so good. and the resolution is SO satisfying i've reread it like twenty times. and such fuckin good character voices too the dialogue is SMOOTH)

HCBBS (Hermitcraft Big Ballroom Scene) by romanocheese

Grian holds a ball to celebrate the finishing of the mansion. Scar appears in rather unexpected attire.

(HOT HOT HOT super well written the kiss is phenomenal the character voices kill me and i love this fic so much im gonna lay down in the road)

(gurgles incoherently. this one gets me. im such a damn sucker for good dialogue and this one nails it along with the bonus of soulbonds AND preening? im in heaven)

This isn't a Love Story by Sleepless_in_Southlands

Grian is a priest of Fate, willing to sacrifice everything to ensure Scar, destined to be his final victim in the arena, doesn't fall in love with him along the way. Unfortunately for him, Scar seems intent on doing just the opposite.

(i talk abt this fic CONSTANTLY literally so bonkers over it i love it im obsessed it's perfect. i love this dynamic this concept this everything. absolute top tier no joke)

attempt thirty-three by bee_4: Joe Hills centric time loop fic. Also features Cleo, Scar, and Cub, and I love everyone's characterisation! Haunting and open ended, but still points of hope. Words: 13,617 Chapters: 1/1

To Sit in Hell with You by enemyofrome: Last Life treebark fic from Ren's POV. Focus on these two in the Shadow Alliance because man, those guys were really something else. Obsessed with the characterisation, have reread a reasonable amount. Words: 2,664 Chapters: 1/1

monsters nearby series by enemyofrome: Treebark series where the games are over but the Watchers aren't leaving Martyn alone- really fun exploration of supernatural impersonations and how that might impact your relationship with the real person. I'm not normal about these ones. Second work has a hopeful ending. Words: 13,856 Works: 2

Lifeline AU by SlashMagpie: Scifi/Fantasy AU about body-snatching aliens, also including the emptiness of space, magical worldbuilding, unreality and time travel. Main POV characters are Tango, Impulse + Pearl, but also includes much of the Hermitcraft ensemble + Skizz. Read the entire AU in one night and haven't been the same since, cannot recommend highly enough. Words: 299,349 Works: 6

Blood & Snow by SlashMagpie: Tango gets eaten by the dungeon, or close enough. Unsettling, visceral, and features possession! Has Scar, Bdubs, Cub, Etho, and Hypno POV. Words: 12,425 Chapters: 7/7

the sanctity of the mundane by crabbunch: Double Life SMP series with a fic exploring the relationships between each soul bounded pair. Found each work really fun and compelling, great variety in tone. Shoutout especially to this Cleo + Martyn! Words: 24,712 Works: 7

sculk blossom by crabbunch: Cub centric fic that works as both a character study and a look at his sculk corruption on Empires. Delighted by the horror and characterisation here! Words: 4,065 Chapters: 5/5

Deus Ex Machine by crabbunch: Bdubs POV, an existential/magical horror piece about the power of belief, storytelling, and godhood. Also some great Clethubs! Words: 13,449 Chapters: 8/16

Tangotek Evil Incorporated: Supervillain Tango and superhero Jimmy as arch nemeses. Comedy with a happy ending, and SO much fun to read. Words: 22,445 Chapters: 2/2

there are many downsides to being a marine biologist by donnerstag: Doc's marine biology gets complicated when the latest specimen turns out more human than expected: the siren he names Martyn. Really engaging and well-characterised fic, impossible to read and not end up invested in docmartyn. Trust me. Words: 74,006 Chapters: 27/27

a falling axe, a sharpened knife by sesquidpedalian: Double Life Cleo + Martyn relationship study, where soulmates also have a telepathic bond. Just really enjoyed this one! Words: 2,081 Chapters: 1/1

ectype by sesquidpedalian: Third Life AU where Martyn is there when Grian visits for enchantments. Really neat character study of two guys who aren't anything alike at all, definitely not. Words: 1,603 Chapters: 1/1

never our blood on this sand again by cosmicretribution: Scarian and treebark timeloop AU. Includes angst, the Timeloop Horrors, developing relationships, and great prose + characterisation! Words: 8,905 Works: 2

A Romance Route for the Doomed Villain?! by skelew: Treebark isekai AU where Martyn gets hit by a 2007 nissan micra and transported to a dating sim featuring the villainous Red King. Crack treated seriously, and a great parody fic that also happens to be genuinely compelling. Words: 5,012 Chapters: 1/1

5. What’s a fic idea you’ve had that you will never write?

hm. that’s kind of a tough one. i think i’ll say this one for mcyt, which is funny in theory but execution… idk. it’s a twist on the solidaritek fic i did a while back.

feat. my partner in crime @bibliobasilisk who encourages all my terrible ideas.

6. Are there any fics from others you reread all the time?

several—in many different fandoms. i actually download them off ao3 and ffn to take with me on my ereader! lemme list a couple from a few of my main fandoms.

fullmetal alchemist — i’ve got nearly 100 fma fics on my kobo. uh. safe to say i’ll read and reread anything by tierfal or batsutousai.

one piece — aural pleasure by unda has my entire fucking heart and i was absolutely devastated to find it deleted but thank fuck i had it saved.

homestuck — anything by callmearcturus is worth reading but my favorite is this one with a shoutout to this one for the dave&jake&aradia friendship. and i would be remiss if i didn’t rec this beautiful fic my friend @mintchocolateleaves wrote for me when i wasn’t feeling well.

mcyt — and since i’m sure this is the fandom you rly want to know about i’m include some specifics. it’s a mix of scarian and solidaritek for the most part.

literally anything by illuminamint. you could never know. we’re here together. we are the foxes. some kind of trouble is coming. are we dancing after death, you and i. crushes and confessions. i don’t think i could stand to be where you don’t see me. one word from you and i would jump off of this ledge i’m on. set you sailing from my harbor. worlds apart (but never too far).

there’s another fic i have saved that was deleted at some point, coffee for dinner by belligerentren. and also trust life by capritarius which is v long at 278k and not on my ereader yet bc it’s still unfinished but so, so worth it.

Since you're allowing fic recs, you got any Grumbo or Scarian fluff? I know that finding some of either is not difficult, but I want to know what you consider to be the best of the best.

It really depends on how much ‘fluffy’ you want. This fandom seems to ‘hate’ pure fluff. For this list I ignored anything that was angsty and just went for happiness. Everything on the rec list is also completed, for your convenience.

Grumbo

This type of terror is new by thp_cara (TheHolosexualPan). It’s completed and basically just Grian and Mumbo cuddles that give you awww and happy. there is a dash of angst that sets the scene, but is moslty just fluff. It IS inspired by BastardBin’s The Weight of Lies, but I don’t feel like prior knowledge of that fic is required to enjoy the story. 

If Only you Knew How You Make My Heart Beat Wildly by FusionFollower. This one is set with the Button, and is one of the few pure fluffy fics. It’s two lovers sharing a blanket, and very well written! 

That’s... just about it. There are a few that also look promising but I can’t give my rec on this list for various reasons, such as including one of my few squicks, or being a bit on the angsty side.

Scarian

Scar won’t get his own bed, and he definitely isn’t planning on it now by goosebxrry. Pure fluff with Scar and Grian sharing a bed. And cuddles. All these fics love cuddles!

Finally by ChipperDotChar. Two words, capitalism and hugs.

The Kissing Challenge by MelonWing. This fic is pure. Just... it has a bit of angsty pinning, and if you don’t want to have Grian kissing other hermits don’t read, but this fic is amazing. It’s all about Grian kissing hermits and discovering his crush on Scar and it made me squeal. Just a bit.
