New research out of London, Ont.’s Western University is shedding light on a potential cure for ALS, in which the targeting of the interaction between two proteins can halt or fully reverse the disease’s progression. According to a news release from Western University on Monday, a team of researchers, led by Dr. Michael Strong, have discovered a potential path toward a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS. “As a doctor, it’s been so important for me to be able to sit down with a patient or their family and say to them, ‘We’re trying to stop this disease,’" said Strong, Arthur J Hudson Chair in ALS research at Western’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.

Researchers from Western and Brown University have made groundbreaking progress towards identifying the root cause and potential therapy for preeclampsia.

The pregnancy complication affects up to eight per cent of pregnancies globally and is the leading cause of maternal and fetal mortality due to premature delivery, complications with the placenta and lack of oxygen.

The research, led by Drs. Kun Ping Lu and Xiao Zhen Zhou at Western, and Drs. Surendra Sharma and Sukanta Jash at Brown, has identified a toxic protein, cis P-tau, in the blood and placenta of preeclampsia patients.

According to the study published in Nature Communications, cis P-tau is a central circulating driver of preeclampsia – a “troublemaker” that plays a major role in causing the deadly complication...

“The root cause of preeclampsia has (so far) remained unknown, and without a known cause there has been no cure. Preterm delivery is the only life-saving measure,” said Lu, professor of biochemistry and oncology at  Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry...

“Our study identifies cis P-tau as a crucial culprit and biomarker for preeclampsia. It can be used for early diagnosis of the complication and is a crucial therapeutic target,” said Sharma...

Until now, cis P-tau was mainly associated with neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and stroke. This association was discovered by Lu and Zhou in 2015 as a result of their decades of research on the role of tau protein in cancer and Alzheimer’s.

An antibody developed by Zhou in 2012 to target only the toxic protein while leaving its healthy counterpart unscathed is currently undergoing clinical trials in human patients suffering from TBI and Alzheimer’s Disease. The antibody has shown promising results in animal models and human cell cultures in treating the brain conditions.

The researchers were curious whether the same antibody could work as a potential treatment for preeclampsia. Upon testing the antibody in mouse models they found astonishing results.

“In this study, we found the cis P-tau antibody efficiently depleted the toxic protein in the blood and placenta, and corrected all features associated with preeclampsia in mice. Clinical features of preeclampsia, like elevated blood pressure, excessive protein in urine and fetal growth restriction, among others, were eliminated and pregnancy was normal,” said Sharma.

Sharma and his team at Brown have been working on developing an assay for early detection of preeclampsia and therapies to treat the condition. He believes the findings of this study have brought them closer to their goal...

“The results have far-reaching implications. This could revolutionize how we understand and treat a range of conditions, from pregnancy-related issues to brain disorders,” said Lu.

A new website featuring work by students at the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University aims to demystify aspects of Indigenous and Aboriginal law by providing clear and concise information for those looking to learn more about its nuances.  Named Abajignmuen – after the Mi'kmaw word used to describe giving back to the community –  the website's creation was led by lawyer Naiomi Metallic, a member of Listiquj First Nation, and the Chancellors Chair in Aboriginal Law and Policy at the Schulich School of Law. "Primarily the projects will be used by community members, but also members of the public," said Metallic in an interview with Mainstreet Nova Scotia this week. [...] The website is online now.

Bitter Sugar Capsule

A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, but a tiny capsule of sugar seems to help bacteria infect in the first place. Researchers studying Streptococcus pyogenes, which causes disease around the world, investigated how its sugar coating, made of hyaluronic acid, promotes severe infections. They discovered that when bacteria without the capsule infected mouse nose structures (pictured, red dots - particularly top left) and skin, they were more vulnerable to attack by the immune system. The capsule appeared to initially impede entry to the host cells, but ultimately help them evade the immune system. Unencapsulated bacteria infection was only effective if immune cells called neutrophils were absent or depleted, suggesting the capsule is key to dodging these cells in particular. Understanding the importance of neutrophils, and the role the hyaluronic acid capsule plays in helping bacteria dodge them, could steer the development of new approaches to treatment.

Farewell, not goodbye

That's it. At exactly 5pm on the 12th May I was locked out of my work account, so I cleared my desk one last time and then went on a little hike at a nearby park to celebrate over a sip of champagne... off for the rest of the year! Yoohoo!

The last two weeks haven't been any calmer though than since I first announced I was leaving, as I've been saying farewell to everyone and everything. In an earlier blog I had written about the "sense of place" which indicates a deeper connection with a location beyond the mere physical, to include also the historical, social and emotional aspects... my sense of place of the Toronto area has never felt so strong!! I feel extremely cherished by all the people I managed to meet up with, from a wicked potluck lunch at work and a Greek dinner with the managers, to one last time Schulich pub drinks and staying-over-at-friends nights, with walk, opera, tea, patio & dinner dates in between... it really feels special to realize I built such a friend-rich life here! Thanks to everyone who wrote a message in a leaving card or in the Canada photo book I've been carrying around, I will read them frequently!

I also spent time saying farewell to my favourite places & things to do; a concert in the Music Garden, pretty city views from Ontario Place & the Broadview hill, walking along the Beaches boardwalk, hiking in Dundas Valley / Bronte Creek, practicing tai-chi, and birdwatching in Paletta Park near my house. This area has so many experiences to offer, and I am happy that I got to know so much.

Below are pics that represent only a few of the many memories that I will keep. I strongly believe that friendships remain despite time or distance, so this is not a goodbye!

"Dozens of law students at Dalhousie University walked out of class on Thursday in an act of solidarity with peers who have voiced experiences of ongoing racist comments from a classmate.

“It’s our duty as the future lawmakers of our society to step out and speak out,” said first-year Schulich Law student Lorenze Cromwell.

After a nearly two-hour discussion between students and law faculty members, Cromwell addressed the crowd of future lawyers.

“We need to hold our heads high and be proud of the fact that we aren’t going to take this sitting down today,” Cromwell said. “We’re not going to take this sitting down tomorrow, the week after that. But this is the ongoing battle against systemic injustice.”

Dalhousie Indigenous Law Student Association member Danielle Hargreaves says she and her colleagues have been dealing with microaggressions since starting the law program in September.

“The students are standing in solidarity, the faculty is standing in solidarity, now the school itself needs to stand with us as well and make real, lasting change,” said Hargreaves.
