KEEPERTALE LORE

(woah. finally.)

The original idea was that Monsters could affect stats. Undyne for example could affect Attack, Papyrus could affect Defense, Toriel and Asgore could affect HP, etc. etc.

I don't remember much about that system (that was made by much much MUCH younger sid) but I do remember this:

The Dreemurr family could affect HP, Toriel heals, Asgore drains. Permanently.

The Wingdings family could affect Defense (or at least thats why they think it is/call it)

The Wingdings family is Gaster (grandfather), Sans (older brother), and Papyrus (younger brother)

SPEAKING OF GASTER !! (this is what i REALLY want to talk about, is it obvious)

unlike my other AUs, while he IS dead he's not forgotten ! (yay)

and unlike Angel! Gaster and Pills! Gaster (+ bonus ms paint doodles) he's looked fucked up like that from the beginning lol

Gaster is the Royal Scientist but hes also in a weird area where hes an entertainer and a soldier at the same time. He's very silly and loves to do things that cheer people up, especially when it comes to his grandsons, so he's one of those great pillars of strength during about half (?) of the events of KT.

This is the shorter summary for the events of KT:

After Chara's death, their two childhood friends venture into the underground to confront the monsters. These two are Perseverance and Justice. Perseverance was looking for a justificiation for their death, they wanted to understand the whole story. Justice, on the other hand, trailed behind Perseverance, plotting their revenge for Chara's death.

A few years after, another human falls and Justice starts to enact their plan, killing Asgore and plunging the Underground into disarray, starting another war. From here, Toriel assumes the role of queen once more to guide the monsters who have evacuated to Snowdin and the Ruins.

Kindness, Integrity, Frisk, and Patience fall during the war period, all of them persuaded by Perseverance to stay by the monsters' side to fight against Justice's irrationality.

Unlike BS AU and UnderPills there isn't really anything to hide for KeeperTale so i've also written the ending for KT ! yayyy

(although I will be hiding how copyverse starts, teehee)

Under the cut is the longer (edit after writing this whole thing, it's VERY long be warned + also theres a lot of colours), more in-depth-ish story + the ending !

After the first human, Chara, died, their body was discovered by two children in a patch of golden flowers. These two children were apparently Chara's friends. Frightened, curious, and furious, the two decide to make their way to Mt. Ebott to find the reason for Chara's death.

While one of them ventured into the Underground to understand the why, the other came for revenge, plotting to kill the monsters who killed their friend. These two were Perseverance and Justice, the former actually warms up to the monsters while the latter is... friendly.

The next human to fall is Bravery, who decided to look for the children who went missing 5 years ago, they're at about age 17. They eventually befriend Justice, who injures Gerson and kills Asgore with the gun they stole from their father. Perseverance sees this and immediately runs to alert Toriel.

Gerson, Gaster, and Grillby (yea i grouped them together because. Gs) help in evacuating the monsters away from New Home by guiding them toward Snowdin as well as assisting Toriel in fighting Justice and Bravery.

Due to this, Toriel assumes the role of ruler (i love putting characters in roles that arent meant to be theirs) and protects her people from the humans with the help of the Gs.

Around the transition era from Asgore's rule to Toriel's guidance, Kindness falls into the Underground at about age 15, Perseverance, who convinces them to help the monsters, was about 17.

Integrity falls two years after at age 16 and becomes quick friends with Gaster, who would exchange witty jokes with his grandsons. About a year after, during a supply run, Gaster and Integrity have a run in with Justice, and while the human left with a few scars and bruises, the monster died.

Frisk falls into the underground at age 13 about 3 years later and learns about all this history by interacting with the other fallen humans. Patience falls after them just a few months after at age 18 (they become the older sibling figure i VIVIDLY remember that).

Once all seven of them fall in, there's two ways (routes ??) for the story to go. One of them is how younger sid finished it, the other leads to Copyverse (a whole other can of worms). The next parts of the story is according to the canonical scriptures (<- aka what is left of my memory as younger sid)

KeeperTale's Ending:

Justice and Bravery finally overtake the guards protecting Snowdin, this happens while Frisk and Patience were being led around to get used to the place by Sans and Papyrus. This forces the monsters to evacuate further into the ruins, the river person takes the four to Waterfall to flee from Justice and Bravery.

Patience, after getting lost on the way to Hotlands, has a run in with Bravery who (surprisingly) does not fight them right off the bat. But they still keep a safe distance from each other. Patience learns that although Bravery is loyal to Justice, they dont like their way of doing things. Papyrus eventually finds Patience and saves them from Bravery (... in his perspective, that is what he did).

With confirmation that the two humans are approaching Hotlands, the skeletons lead the group back to the river person to go home to Snowdin. This is when Frisk (and Patience) initiates the going around and talking to people to understand the history of the Underground thing. After this, Patience speaks to Toriel and Undyne about Bravery's conflict.

A good while after that, Justice tries to break the door to the ruins, succeeds, then fights Undyne and Kindness. Papyrus leaves to alert the monsters, Toriel, and Perseverance. Alphys evacuates the monsters but leaves to assist Undyne. After dealing a significant amount of damage (almost killing her) they venture further into the Ruins with Bravery but then confronted by Papyrus and Integrity.

Papyrus gives them a chance to leave, Bravery flinches from the conviction in which he said "I WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO PASS." Justice immediately shoots him, but Kindness protects him and the fight is initiated. Integrity, after Patience's arrival, tries to talk some sense into Bravery on the sidelines.

Bravery's loyalty is eventually shaken and they turn to tackle Justice to stall them and have Integrity and Patience get Papyrus, who also suffered through a significant amount of damage (he wont die), to safety. This is when sans, accompanied by Frisk, tries to seize the opportunity to kill Justice, who notices them and sacrifices Bravery. (they dont die)

This starts the battle with sans and Justice while Frisk struggles to basically drag this 21 year old off to safety while they dramatically talk about their regrets and their loyalty to Justice.

Toriel eventually makes her dramatic entrance with Perseverance (+ Kindness) and heals Bravery, instructing Frisk to evacuate with the rest of the monsters, Kindness helps Bravery up and they leave for Toriel's house.

Toriel and Perseverance take over for the exhausted sans, Perseverance reveals that they are capable of harnessing magic and traps Justice's soul while Toriel fights quietly. She laments about Asgore's death, and how they were foolish to have accepted humans into their community. But she also remarks that if not for Chara, Perseverance, and the rest of the humans, she would have been a miserable old lady forever tending to the Ruins.

Perseverance talks about how they should've been suspicious when they noticed Justice take their father's gun, and tells them they wish they didn't come to the underground at all. "Hopefully, in the next life, we can live more peacefully" Perseverance says before dealing the finishing blow to Justice, and ending the war.

KeeperTale is the oldest AU on my list of stories. reading + writing this, i feel a bit of cringe for a lot of the plot points, and the very existence of copyverse, but i'm also very happy that younger sid made this at all.

anyway ! other than the wingdings family, the only other designed character here is grillby <- hes an architect here, i love him !!

i tried to include everyone i could and give all of them unique monster types but there are some repeats :( ib sowwee i tried to make them unique when i could tho. lmk if u have any suggestions for characters or different monster types.

Saiki Kusuo - Lovecraftian Eldritch Horror

i mean. duh.

he poses as his own (human) worshipper to avoid being indoctrinated elsewhere

"i can't attend, i have worship tonight." "oh that's cool who do you worship?" "they don't like being talked about." "ohh so it's an... invite-only system. right......"

deciding now that closed worship systems like saiki purports are generally a total Scam and people avoid them like a plague. it fits with saikis foray into the internet lol

Saiki Kuusuke - Cult Worshipper (Human)

bet you thought i was gonna say mad scientist. WRONG that's his day job.

kuusuke operates as a mad scientist since humans aren't allowed into the monster world (afaik humans arent even seen outside of jackson, who is half monster). idk what he makes tho. maybe he pulls a doctor finklestein and makes bone animals to roam the monster world?

kuusuke is the one who got his family into the monster world btw. i mean he definitely found it p quickly after kusuo started morphing and speaking in tongues and shit

kuusuke would LOVE the monster world, at least at first. he might get bored really quickly, but he'd love being able to be more of a crazy bastard than he already is

kuusuke functions as a head cultist for kusuo, but instead of strengthening him with sacrifices and praying for protection, he weakens him with sacrifices (the limiters) and prays for himself to be smote (kusuo to play games with him) (kusuo ignores him a lot)

maybe he made amp/anpu like he did warp. idk.

Saiki Kurumi / Saiki Kuniharu - Cult Worshipper (Human)

they were 100% human before being dragged into the monster world due to their sons

they basically live the same as they do in canon tbh i dont think a lot would change in the monster world

during the new years chapter maybe instead of saying kusuo has powers, they say something about his eldritchness or how glad they are to "worship" such a chill god. god i wanna write this now.

Kaidou Shun - Vampire

okay so not ACTUALLY a vampire but i think it was nopsi who had like an au where kaidou was like a weaker version of a vampire?? GOD i dont remember the name (hampir?? i cant find it on wikipedia, did it start with an f????). for all intents and purposes, im just gonna consider him a weak vampire

i cant remember if he'd be made thru a human/vampire relationship but if he was then i think we should play into the manga hair colors of his siblings and say that whole toki and sora and his mother are all full vampires, he was half vampire (perhaps he's from the father's side of the family from a previous relationship, since his mother has purple hair in her manga cover i think??)

draculara has her red drinks and her spf and her cute little parasol so OF COURSE kaidou has all of those as well. i think it would be very funny if kaidou had his umbrella customized to look like a hidden anime weapon, but it wasn't waterproof so he has to use a different one when it rains

i have a gen 1 og draculara from when i was a kid and i love her she's so cute :] someone draw kaidou in her outfit he'd slay. actually, just draw all of them in her outfit(s). gloom beach teruhashi. sweet screams mera. freak du chic saiki. sweet 1600 saiko. fearleader hairo. you cannot make her look bad idc.

Nendou Riki - Zombie (Frankenstein's Monster type zombie)

okay so this might be controversial but imagine:

everyone's chatting like normal, nendous head falls off, everyone goes deathly silent, nendou puts it back on and goes back to talking, cue kaidou screeching

bc im rewriting this im not gonna go thru my thought process so my idea was that takeuchi was a mad scientist who created midori after himself bc he only had access to a mirror (neither realized they looked the same). takeuchi died and chouno, who was smitten with midori, remade takeuchi who midori named riki and chose to raise as her own. chouno intended it as a poetic final goodbye but cut to 16 years later and hes still not over her lol

nendou being undead could also play into his appreciation for life.... protecting the obviously smaller and weaker saiki and kaidou.... his care for his dad that he never met (altho he might have two dads in this au?).... THE HAMSTER SCENE. NENDOU :((((

Teruhashi Kokomi - Tomie

im SORRY for bringing up junji ito but come ON

for those who dont know tomie, she's basically So Beautiful that men are supernaturally attracted to her until she drives them mad with her beauty. they cut her up and scatter her remains and they turn into more tomies

however. teruhashi isnt just a pretty girl. she's The Perfect Pretty Girl. so we can just ignore all the bloodshed and murder and deathmatches :D

i debated making her a siren but that just doesn't fit her for some reason. she doesn't have to try.

in op's post they made her aphrodite reincarnated but i don't think that there are gods walking amonst the student disembody unfortunately

Teruhashi Makoto - Intersection Bishounen

IM SORRY THE TERHASHI SIBLINGS JUST FIT JUNJI ITO SO WELL

the intersection bishounen is a vengeful spirit that roams the streets and gives fortunes to young girls that drive them to suicide, after which they come back as ghosts and beg for his affection.

makoto is more of a teenage/ya heartthrob than a vengeful spirit tho so we can get rid of all the cool stuff like fortune telling and driving to suicide

the intersection bishounen also didnt want to fuck his cousin so points to him

Hairo Kineshi - Fire Elemental

i KNOW he's BORING

think of heath. i think heath is like the son of hades or something idfk i say fuck that ive never heard that before until i started getting back into monster high that's not canon to me

theres... a surprisingly low amount of sports name puns :( there's casketball, ofc ofc, because mh is american. there's monster soccer from toralei's ghoul spirit notebook, but baseball and tennis from clawdeen and spectra dont get named so they dont have names. thats BULLSHIT btw someone who's good w puns help me im freezing up

gilda goldstag was also a fire elemental right? i dont actually know anything about her other than that she was in the student council bc she was in the doll pack

theres a wind elemental mentioned in spectras ghoul spirit notebook. figured that id mention it idk

Mera Chisato - Shouku-jinki

okay i need to preface this with something that is very important to me about this, the Japanese creature the jikininki/shoku-jinki originated in the story of musou the preist. as far as ive been able to see, there is a second story featured on wikipedia about a pregnant woman that is legitimately someone's fucking oc insert. im not making this up, it appeared one goddamn day and i dont want to make an acc just to get rid of it but i dont want to have my ip address just There and i dont know how to like draw attention to it. so please know that the story of musou is the only legitimate source of the jikininki and the "jijinki" are just someones fucking oc inserts. i dont know why they did this, i dont know how it's still there bc its been YEARS how has no one removed it??

anyways im calm now.

jikininki (or, iirc the more modern version is shoku-jinki) are demons that were greedy or impious in life and were cursed to wander the earth forever starving and thirsty. at night, they eat dead bodies.

sooo remember how mera acted when she got her money back for a day.

her death was the cause of their bankruptcy, maybe they put all their money towards avenging her?

i think that mera would come from a half human, half monster family so she could already be in the monster world, but i dont have to worry about what powers she'd have due to being a monster.

her mother would be a demon and her father a human who doesn't quite know how to navigate the monster would, so he still has to go away to earn money. also imagine four kids following mera around, three have devil horns and taiks and one is just some guy. (idk if she has 4 siblings but you get the idea)

so yeah, mera is immortal, unable to feel satisfied by any amount of food or drink, working herself to the bone to provide for her siblings. the mera lore is Strong w this one.

u could totally also go for some real body horror with her if u wanted

Yumehara Chiyo - Ghost

ill go into the difference between ghosts and souls in toritsuka's part since you cant take away toritsukas thing but you cant just remove ghosts from mh

i initially thought of making her a cherub/cupid but girlie would be getting No One Together. also there's only one cupid in mh and uhhhh there would be no hope if that was chiyo. yk what chiyo loves tho? gossip. u know what spectra loves? gossip.

i think the ghosts in mh all have a chain motif iirc? ik spectra does but sirena von boo also does (the siren/ghost hybrid) and i dont know any other ghosts off the top of my head

anyways yumehara is totally just a regular people ghost. maybe she cries blood or somethin fun like that? maybe have a bit where she keeps getting told off for having makeup and its her eyes leaking or its her having anti blood leaking drops or wipes

Saiko Metori - Mummy

i was gonna make him a vampire but HELLO??? CLEO IS RIGHT THERE????

rich, bratty, self-centered?? DE NILE IS CLEOS LAST NAME.

idk if him being a mummy would change him like cosmetically, like skin tone or hair texture or whatever but i cant draw so that doesn't quite matter to me. altho ig hed probably just look like a pale, dehydrated, brittle pile of bandages if you wanna be historicallty accurate

he definitely decks himself out in a looott more gold than just his earring as a mummy. bangles, cuffs rings, anklets, hair accessories.

the bodyguards are just the tomb protectors that cleo gets as slaves

he gets a custom made desk of pure gold at pk and he never uses it

i think in ancient egypt married couples would be buried together regardless of if at least the wife was dead or alive, so he definitely propositions teruhashi to take a sand nap with him

he gets a pet crocodile. he has a tiger in canon i think and cleo gets a snake so like. nile crocodile obviously.

i cant tell if he lives in a pyramid just randomly in the middle of hidari wakibara, or if theres a bit about nendou asking him where his pyramid is and saikos just like "bro i Dont Live In A Pyramid."

Kuboyasu Aren - Werewolf

hello?? violent, tragic past that comes back to haunt them regularly and interfere with their daily lives?????

i dont think werewolves can turn into wolves in mh but like if you want doggy kuboyasu who's as big as kaidou, go for it

Toritsuka Reita - Cult Worshipper (Human)

okay so there's a difference between ghosts and souls in this version. ghosts are a form of undead that are sort of just humans that can float and go thru walls and stuff. souls are the base forms of dead people that remain chained to existence with no knowledge of who they were. normal people can see ghosts, but not souls. toritsuka can see both

toritsuka was also raised in a temple in this au, pretty standard stuff. nothing interesting there.

so yk how toritsuka found out abt saiki thru the souls

and yk how saikis an eldritch monster that melts mind and twists reality to his will in this au

toritsuka does not know the meaning of the term eldritch btw

if ur a torisai or toritsuka angst fan then u can always imagine toritsuka thinking himself inferior to the rest of the pk psychickers bc he's a human and didnt even find saiki by himself, but with the help of his ghosts. sorry i gotta push the torisai agenda.

i personally also hc him to be hypersexualized by the adults in his life due to his touchyness from a young age which lead to him being ostracized by his peers when he began repeating the behavior, thus encouraging the development of touch starvation that he misinterpreted as horniness. in other words, "damn bitch u live like this?". sooo do with that what u will in this au.

Aiura Mikoto - Cult Worshipper (Devil)

basically aiura but with cute devil horns and a tail that reacts with her mood. she 100% bedazzles and paints her horns like she paints her nails.

shes still a prophet and stuff but like shes just a lil demonic now. as she deserves.

Akechi Touma - Cult Worshipper (Human)

initially i wanted to make him a bugboy bc yea but consider

saiki knew him in elementary school so he pulled a real I Tracked Down My Childhood Friend Who Is Actually An Eldritch Monster Masquerading as a Pretty Boy with Pink Hair in a High School?!

yeah soo like what if their dynamic was "what if we were friends in our childhood years before you had to leave to stop the uncontrollable desire you had to break down my reality and drive me into irreversible madness, yet despite knowing the danger i faced i still hunted you down, my prayers meant solely to get a response from you devolving into genuine reverence, solidifying myself as your most loyal devotee...... haha jk. unless?"

we all know that akechi likely faced no difficulty finding the monster world dont even ask

you can insert ur own hcs with his mom all ill say is that shes probably masquerading as some sort of cult worshipper or jekyll/hyde situation to live in the monster world. or maybe he just moved schools and lives sort of nearby but not in the monster world idk

akechi would fucking Love the monster world. he'd never get bored of it. you know the sweet potato scene? oh, honey, he's got access to information about the average size of different monsters, along with the influence of proportions and size, magical interference, etc etc. hed fucking LOVE the monster world.

Satou Hiroshi - Ghost

ive already got three ghosts (see suzumiya and makino) but i couldnt think of the Most Generic monster but hear me out

hes got two black or cut out circles for eyes and a little 'o' for a mouth. just fuckin 0 。0 .

satous friends and baseball team are either the core basic monsters (werewolf, vampire, zombie, etc) or theyre basic japanese spirits. im. not doing tons of research on if there are generic japanese demons or if theres just sort of one kind of demon that has a lot of forms,,,, im so sorry i can only do so much research please correct me if you know better

Rifuta Imu - Catgirl

i dont know what the name of the actual catgirls are in mh (werecats?) like purrsephone and toralei and meowlody but fuck it catgirl

she would have THE cutest collar. OR she'd have a ribbon around her neck w a matching one on her tail like catrine de mew. she could maybe even have some sort of shredded piece of clothing like catty noir's skirt or a habit of shredding things

im sorry i dont know a lot about cat breeds so i dont have a lot to say about her species

btw she's a cat bc of japans obsession w cats. i considered making HER a siren since i scrapped that idea for teruhashi but i feel like it just. doesn't suit her.

idk what is his horse would be i just wanted bloodgood to have Presence in this and the principal is only seen like. three times.

i considered giving kuboyasu the status as headless horseman bc of his motorcycle but g1 bloodgood did not serve that much cunt for her type to be given to a 16 year old im sorry

(i also recently got a bloodgood as my first doll when i got back into mh and i love her :] she came w a cool coat that isnt her og coat but its nice anyways)

Chouno Urkyoku - Mad Jester

okay so ik i said he was a mad scientist but he retired that in order to go into entertainment. it's not going too well.

you could also go for a ringmaster/clown route but we all lived thru 2016 (or was it 2017?) and the ensuing cliche-ifying treatment the media gave scary clowns put me off them personally lol they kind of bore me

(if u don't live in the us or don't know what im talking about that happened in 2016, then god i envy you. just look up "2016 clowns usa" im sure you'll figure it out)

Michael (Ikemi something I think?) - Zombie

idk it just fits him

zombies in g1 can only communicate thru moans which makes them nonverbal in some way but g3 STOLE that from us. fuck them.

theres a whole joke about japanese mangakas being worked to the bone to provide chapters every week or so for serialization even going so far as to hide or make excuses as to why they did not complete the chapter

i feel so bad for them bro i could not (used to do weekly updates for fics for 5 years before i started needing money bc i turned 18)

The Alphonse guy - Invisi Billy

idk what invisi billy is but he can be here helping alphonse hide from the shame of his chunnibyou :D

Wandering au Just so you know part 2!

Ok so last i left off was with chara i went a bit into it with joris too so lets start with him.

Joris: he was still raised by kerubim who still owns the shop and is still a retired adventurer in regards to his childhood not much has changed.

He met chara at the age of 50. They were curled up on the beach crying covered in bruises and scratches. Hes still closed off but that urge to help others is ever present so of course he approached them and asked what happened. Chara didnt really tell him though and he didnt push it too hard since it was clear they didnt want to talk about it. As a result of realizing this and still wanting to help he ended up spending quite a while with chara talking about his studies and various other things. Ever since chara has considered him a friend

Hes quiet and reserved but opens up after awhile of getting to know him.

Hes secretly a huge nerd who cant handle being flirted with very well. When chara realizes this after a rather pretty girl decided joris was interesting enough to flirt with they tease him beyond all reason. Thus the use of terrible pick up lines instead of normal greetings became the norm. Obviously joris got used to it after a while but every now and then he still gets flustered.

The first time he flirts back is on accident and results in both parties ending up flustered. Really its all very silly.

He didnt actually know chara was a siren for the first few years of their friendship just assuming chara lived nearby. He was actually rather angry when he found out and stopped talking to chara for a few days. After the mess he was also obviously more gaurded and chara’s visits ended up shorter as they realized joris was suddenly scared of them and maade it seem as if suddenly knowing they were a siren made them less like them. Lilotte was the one that ended up getting joris to stop being an idiot as shee typically does. He may be great in academics but people are something he is terrible at.

Lilotte teases him alot about his friendship (and later realtionship) with chara but shes over all supportive of it.

Lilotte: She tends to be busy more often than not running a cozy little bakery on the edge of town

Despite growing up along side joris she is the older looking one than the two. Shes not old by the standards of a normal 100 y/o woman looking more like shes in her 50s. A spry woman ready to kickass if necassary.

She tends to play the role of elder sister for joris and knocks some sense into him when its required.

She wasnt as upset as joris at the reveaal of chara’s true nature. In fact joris thinks she might have known all along but kept quiet about it for their safety.

The dreemurrs: because i know someone will ask.

Toriel is a teacher and runs a bakery on the side shes happy and loves her husband and children dearly. Basically shes just toriel nothing really changed.

Asgore is the same, hes a gardner and passed his love for nature down to asriel.

They both look forward to letters from asriel and are always excited to hear of his adventures away from home though they made sure to tell him how upset they were when he just up and left without warning once they were able to send him letters.

They send them to the inn so its not uncommon for alibert to just have a stash of letters piled up waiting for asriel to read them.

Undyne and alphys: the last two ive actually put some thought into who play a ish big role.

Undyne is a siren feared by most everyone other sirens included. Alphys is a scientist and geek who ended up realizing she wasnt as scary as people made her out to be.

They’d been dating for around 2 years when undyne dragged a very bloody and unconsious chara to alphys for help. Alphys ended up being able to save chara but undyne refused to tell her what happened and the clearly young siren shed saved wasnt too keen on it either.

Undyne and alphys sent chara to live with the dreemurrs after the whole mess as chara refused to go home. While chara was there they were forced onto land and hated every second of it only playing with asriel made the pain of walking dull enough to be semi-bearable. When he left they had no real reason to stay except to abvoid being found by their parents.

And i do believe thats it. The others i havent really put much thought into as they arent directly invovled in anything and are more “friends of this person that shows up from time to time”

Oh wait whoops bout forgot about alibert xP

Alibert: yugo and adamai’s adoptive father he runs the inn the same way hes does in the show.

Hes rather fond of the goat boy that his son is friends with mostly cause he seems to bring in the customers with his music.

Though he does worry about adamai’s lack of friends and trys to encourage the dragon to go out and stop working so much. This usually results in a sigh and adamai relunctantly leaving to go find his brother, or amalia. Mostly amalia. Though if frisk is in town he’ll just go find them.

Side notes that i forgot to mention:

Adamai is much closer friends with amalia in this.

Amalia herself is mute.

Frisk is deaf.

Chara and joris go to gobbowl games together as they both enjoy the sport.

real talk: movie reviews

Your review/opinion of a movie is complete worthless shit if you dont base it off its intent and needlessly compare it to other things.

a comedy is suppose to be funny, a drama is suppose to be dramatic. If you were to talk about how Jaws wasnt funny enough and gave your kids nightmares cus it was to scary, as a criticism of a movie your review would be stupid, yes?

You have to go into a story, a movie or a series with sincerity. If you are going in thinking “i hope this isnt as bad as i think its going to be” or w/e then you are going in with prejudice. Its not the producers or actors or writers fault if you dont WANT to enjoy the movie, its YOUR fault.

“it had bad acting” ...well....no probably not. You probably mean the Acting was to campy, or the acting wasnt realistic enough, or the acting didnt convey what i think was meant to be conveyed. There are multiple forms of acting. If you want every great historically awesome groundbreaking movie that was filmed in the 20th century they ALL have horrible acting. Except they arent. Thats what acting was like back then. I am not a fan of older movies because they are heavily dialogue based. They focus on monologues and banter and i find the whole thing very boring. But i’m not an fucking idiot, and so i recognize that its a Different Style and dont go around bad mouthing it.

“its plot was obvious”...well was it suppose to be? I mean people say there are no orginal stories. it doesnt matter WHAT happens but Why. the devil is in the details. I mean if you told me that Dumbledor dies that ...wouldnt be a problem because I dont know WHY he dies, HOW he dies, WHO kills him , WHEn he dies and all the information surrounding that event. Like if the movie is a Jurassic film you know its going to go wrong...thats a given. you might as well insult a horror movie for being scary. Thats just....like...reality. Movies about a lack of conflict arent entertaining. You need conflict. So the movie is about when things go wrong. In order for this to be a valid criticism you’d have to explain why the simple plot is a bad thing

“the villains were obvious”...most villains are. Like we literally have one in the white house right now. If your point is that people would stop obviously villainous people right away you’d be wrong. if your point is people would have a problem working with villains you’d be wrong. We literally have businessmen in real life saying that poor people deserve to die, so how does a fictional villain saying that he’s going to sell a dinosaur to some mafia guys like any different?

“dexu ex machina” first of all i dont think that word means what you think it means. its a reference to the machine of the gods, meaning the moments in plays when the plot could not be resolved so they had the gods come in and fix everything. It does NOT mean “the heroes got spared because an event out of their control changed the situation”. heck thats often how the conflict starts in the first place.

and again one has to consider the GENRE and intent of the movie.

Like i love all the Jurassic movies...because they are good and fun. Thats just how they are. They have philisophical debates, they have intercharacter conflict (romance or divorces) that leads to cute banter. They have things going horribly out of control. they have contrived coincedences that are fun or funny.

They have heroes barely escaping horrible situations through nothing but luck. Like thats whats fun about it! If you dont like it thats fine but to Insult something just cus you dont like it is idiotic and shows how unprofessional you are.

I HATE coffee but i dont insult it or people who like it

Like in preparation for the next movie i watched jurassic world again and was reminded of all the fun i had.

The horrific Irony of corporate scientiests saying things like “it ate its sister” and that look where you can see they are desperately trying to ignore that big warning sign cus they are trying to be optimistic.

the shot with the dinosaur foot thats actuallly a raven’s foot that plays with audiences expectations of a dramatic scene change of violence “oh but its actually something harmless” that is common in these movies (they’ve had one for ever movie) while also lampshading the fact that birds are related to dinosaurs. Thats some top notch movieing

the silly divorce plotline that brought humanity to the cast, that kinda showed that the people who end up in horrible situations are people just trying to deal with their things. Not to mention how its almost always tied to the plot? Like how in Jurassic 3 them trying to save their child helped the mother and father heal their relationship, How the brothers attempts to overcome his shittyness because his brother is worried about the divorce leads him to do something dangerous that almost gets them killed

The silly situations and black comedy like in Jurassic 2 where the guy gets eaten in front of hte blockbuster and you hear his comedic “Ug, uuuggk” like the slowly dying version of the Wilhelm scream. In jurassic world you had the cute comedy of the frustrated Tourguide person “guys i just work here” and the pteredon stopping right before it would have impaled one of the heroes. The indominous being indignant at the weird things screaming at it so it screams at them back because she’s a petulant child.

And like people give it to much shit and it usually means the critic is being an idiot about it. Like it wasnt Clair it was Masrani who wanted send in the soldiers with non lethals. Ppl want to talk about the light measures they took but the whole problem wasnt caused by the park but by a rogue scientist creating military grade upgrades without the company knowing about it. Ppl want to talk about how unrealistic the dinosaurs are but they arent dinosaurs? its even discussed within the movie that they are hybrid abominations made to look like what people think dinosaurs are.

and that moment where the nerd guy tries to like ...be all heroic “someone has to stay” to impress his girl coworker to only find out that she’s not that impressed, has a boyfriend and that he’s projecting this romance on their relationship where there is none and gets shot down, is like the single greatest moment in cinematic history, i loved it!

(though Claire utilizing her unique position as the person in charge to risk her life to use the parks oldest and most iconic asset in order to kill the indominous is a close second).

Like...we get it. You are pretentious and mean and get off on telling other people how things are terrible..

but if you dont mind we are going to be over here having fun? and we are going to keep getting Fun quirky movies about unrealistic dinosaurs and contrived coincedences and campy villians and shitty love stories that take place in the background and these type of movies are going to exist forever because they are FUN

And if you dont like it, die mad about it

welcome to my silly ffvii sideblog for rambling. first order of business is to make fun of young vincent for being an easily startled forest prince who sleeps in fields when hes supposed to be bodyguarding and brazenly crosses lines of familiarity w his client. strange and oddly vulnerable for a man whos supposed to be part of an elite administrative research hitsquad for a ruthless megacorporation. he pines and stands lovelorn off to the side and when he DOES say something about it he (unparalleled marksman that he is) gets surprised and outdrawn by nerdy hojo of all people. hes my favorite and i love him. enjoy my extremely biased analysis.

even if i dont care for dirge and the rest of the compilation(understatement!) they do add A FEW interesting glimpses into who vincent may have been before all the fun hojo had with him. thesis statement: vincent is pretty good sensitive boy and um a professional killer (but to a lesser extent than, say, tseng where he really is more of a guard with the CAPACITY to kill)

anyway look at this ugly goober... shinras best shooty boy. i can ONLY assume back in the old days of shinra manufacturing he had less to worry about, esp compared to the post wutai war post avalanche turks who undoubtably faced people of strong anti shinra convictions and certainly grew to have a harder, more criminal mindset- more than our young mr valentine here*. meanwhile vincent is adorably unprofessional about his feelings for lucretia and (as i assume turks are trained to do their duty with zero qualms to the morality of their assignments) in how he voices his objections, which seems to tell me he runs a bit more emotional than the average turk. also im in love with him.

im playing VERY fast and loose with ideas about the early days of shinra electric, and id like to see if theres more textual evidence to support or contradict this BUT i think in its earlier days shinra is a less belligerent force in the world- expansive, sure, but in the absence of wutai and avalanche, who exactly would there be to conduct espionage against? who is gunning for shinra scientists? there arent any other corporations or major governments around in ff7 so i can only think of two main dangers: general petty crime and other shinra execs. easily dealt with by being a pretty good shot, not really the kind of opposition you need plate-dropping levels of heartlessness to defeat.

re: before crisis we have this bit i cribbed from the wiki: While recovering in a Shinra medical facility, Veld explains why he stayed to help Tseng: as his mission had been completed, he, like Tseng, was free, and chose to help as that was what he wanted the Turks to be: loyal to the mission, but still good people at heart.

anyway out of the four turks we see in ffvii og, vincent seems the most like uh... elena

WHICH tells me one of two things, either vincent hasnt been a turk very long, OR he hasnt needed to harden up in the ways more recent turks have + as we can see veld, another turk from vincents time, has hopes regarding the moral core of the turks that, unfortunately, end rather abruptly with the emergence of real, coordinated resistance to shinras expansion. i really do believe the turks grew into their role as espionage killers; its more likely they were at first skewed towards general bodyguarding and observation.

he isnt callously casual like reno or stoic and silent like rude, nor is he as matter of fact and resigned to the cruelty of his position like tseng... he openly questions motives (and so HESITANTLY! and he looks so personally wounded while he does it) and dozes off and crushes on his superior(?)...

moving on from THAT, vincent is significantly more stoic after his big sleep but when he does emote theyre usually quite sentimental/poetic/dramatic(my fav) or kind of tongue in cheek dry humor kind of lines:

CERTAINLY not emotionless but more like his sleep and the lucretia debacle kind of tempered or matured him in a way. im particularly fond of his "so glad youre alright, tifa" line bc its such a sweet and straightforward sentiment... hes cold sure but not unfeeling which speaks to his true personality underneath the layers of guilt hes buried himself under ("hit the breaks, chief" is also just. can you imagine him saying that?)

in conclusion while i admit i am biased towards reading a level of "goodness" into vincent because, well, hes in the protagonists party and i like him, i do really think he has a softer disposition than the modern turks because of the relatively stable time period in which he was employed. that relative tranquility QUICKLY went sour, but even after those harrowing events there are glimmers of real, kind human emotions in his sparse dialogue left over from who he was as a person and not a test subject and. this subtle characterization is why i love him. thanks and good night

*in the ultimania timeline i believe he was born before mako energy even existed, so i think everywhere counts as "the country" in a world with no major settlements and scarce electricity

The Tech Employee's Ultimate Guide to Getting Started in Real Estate Investing

While most real estate investing advice is geared to those who wish to escape their current jobs, not much has been written for those of us who love our jobs and dont intend to quit them. Personally, if I quit my job, I know I would be bored out of my mind. I enjoy my career and have no intentions to quit, but I wanted to build a real estate portfolio that would supplement my income to achieve my financial goals and my goals to give back to the community. The following is my real estate investing philosophy that I use to guide my decision-making. By no means will my philosophy be perfect for you, but Ive found the following advice to ring true to those of us who want to get started in real estate without wanting to end a promising career. Getting Started I was blessed to start my real estate investing career with my father (which I talked about in BiggerPockets Podcast episode 74). When I started investing in 2013,the market was a much different place. We were just coming out of the trough of the recession so it didnt take a rocket scientist to do well in real estate because most of the money made in real estate happens when theres a significant distress in the market. Without distress in the market, its hard to buy properties at prices that will provide you enough return for the time involved. Now that we are approaching the late stages of the cycle, this is where the risk/reward equation is skewed more towards risk and its very easy to lose a buck. Construction costs are increasing. New units of housing are coming online, rents are softening, and interest rates are rising. Now is a great time to study real estate and build your real estate investing network. This isnt a time to rush into the market to purchase something youll later regret. Financial Housekeeping Before we get started with real estate, you have to make sure youre covering the basics. Assuming your company matches your 401(k) contributions, you should max out those accounts and invest in a target retirement index fund. An employee match is pretty much a risk-free rate of return that you wont be able to beat anywhere else. Then you should set up a Roth IRA, assuming you qualify. Next comes savings. As cliche as the advice sounds, its imperative that you live beneath your means by maxing out your savings. Adequate savings provide you the financial security to walk away from any situation or real estate deal if you feel youre not being treated fairly. Without being able to walk away from bad situations, your life will be filled with constant stress. At the minimum, you need to save months worth of living expenses in the bank so that if you lose your job you can stay afloat during these tough times. You also need enough insurance to provide your loved ones with support in case something tragic happens to you. We all think were invincible, but theres always that risk something terrible can happen to you. Your company should provide you with the option to enroll in various accidental death, short and long-term disability, and long-term healthcare coverages. Make sure you pay for your disability coverage because if your employer pays for the coverage, you will face a large tax bill. If you havent applied for these insurances, please consider doing so. Then you need to get your estate in order. Ive seen many families suffer from a lack of proper estate planning. You need to set up a trust so that its made clear what your directives are when you unable to act on your own behalf. If youre incapacitated, who will make healthcare decisions on your behalf? Who should be responsible for maintaining your assets? In the tragic event of your passing, where should your assets go? All of these questions need to be answered now, and you should speak to a trusted attorney. Finally, you need to prevent yourself from getting caught in conspicuous consumption trap of buying things you dont need in order to impress others. Its very easy in Silicon Valley to fall into this trap because so many people are doing amazing things such as traveling the world or buying luxury cars and huge homes. You need to focus on your long-term goals and not get sucked into other peoples dreams. If you follow these guidelines, you will be on part of the way there to a healthy retirement. High Net Worth But No or Low Cash Flow The reason why I said part of the way there is because Ive come across many tech employees that have stock portfolios worth millions of dollars, but they dont have a single asset thats producing cash flow. They are net worth rich, yet cash flow poor. The only way for them to benefit from these assets is to sell them, but once they are cashed out and spent, its gone forever. I met hundreds of paper millionaires during the Valleys first tech crash, and unfortunately, they never diversified their holdings to other forms of assets to take advantage of their new-found wealth. Related: 4 Toxic Habits That Sabotage Even the Most Promising New Investors So How Do You Build Cash Flow? Of course, you can buy stocks that pay dividends, but based on what happened with the GE and Budweiser, dividends arent guaranteed. Dividend payouts depend upon more variables than real estate, which increases the odds of companies not paying them out. For stock dividends, you have to hope the companys business model allows them to earn large returns on capital to pay a dividend, hope the companys products stay relevant in the future, hope a competitor doesnt steal market share, and hope the management team is competent. For real estate, you need to buy a good property located in a desirable location for a decent price in order to attract the right tenants for the property to cash flow. This has fewer variables, which decreases your risk exposure, but of course doesnt guarantee cash flow. The Benefits of Working in Tech Being that you work in tech, you likely have a steady paycheck, a generous 401(k) program, and resources to easily qualify for a mortgage. This is an advantage that most investors lack, and you must use this to the best of your ability. While full-time real estate professionals need to buy and sell properties in a frothy market to pay their bills, you have a good job that allows you to wait until a frothy market cools off and then swoop in when the real estate cycle hits a trough. While real estate is currently in vogue, many people are feeling the pressure to deploy capital as if money is going out of style. Control that impulse! The real estate cycle has shifted from a buyers market (roughly 2009 to 201) to a sellers market (2016 or so onwards). In this market, the returns arent as high as they used to be, and Im seeing people do silly things in the market such as taking out home lines of equity or loans on their stock portfolio to buy low yielding real estate investments. Im seeing syndication pro formas with assumptions that the economy will grow forever, which isnt how the business cycle works. At this point in the market, money is cheap, and deals are being bought at a premium, which is a bad sign for investors because the risk/reward equation is now skewed towards more risk for each marginal unit of reward. When the cycle slows down, then you will see money becoming harder to obtain and home values retreating, which makes it easier to find sound investments. At that point, you are in the drivers seat and you will have an opportunity to buy real estate at discounted price. How Do You Know When the Market is Cooling Off? When you can find a property that meets your strict criteria. Each person has their own criteria that fits their return goals, and you need to create your own. But as a baseline, after all expenses (mortgage, taxes, insurance, operating costs, long-term capital improvement reserves, etc.), you should at the least hit a cap rate of 6% based on historical returns and assuming the propertys price is in line with comparable properties. Im not saying thats a cap rate I aim for, but if youre shooting for anything lower, you are exposing yourself to overpaying for an asset. Every Investor Hates Sitting on CashUntil They Need it I regularly take calls from investors who feel anxious for having large amounts of capital sitting on the sidelines. These investors are already fully invested in the stock market and might have a few real estate investments. When I hear these stories, I think of the lessons I learned from Warren Buffets annual shareholder letters. I want to highlight two excerpts from his annual shareholders letter. Our aversion to leverage has dampened our returns over the years. But Charlie and I sleep well. Both of us believe it is insane to risk what you have and need in order to obtain what you dont need. Despite our recent drought of acquisitions, Charlie and I believe that from time to time Berkshire will have opportunities to make very large purchases. In the meantime, we will stick with our simple guideline: The less the prudence with which others conduct their affairs, the greater the prudence with which we must conduct our own. Preach! When markets are booming, we hold on to cash while feeling great shame. So we must get rid of it as soon as possible because everyone else is making so much money. Yes, losing a small percentage of purchasing power due to inflation hurts, but being knocked out of the game by losing all of your money is even worse. The name of the game is to stay in the game long enough so you can purchase assets that fit your criteria. No one can forecast when the corrections will happen, but you need to be in a position to act when they appear. Look at your cash as an oxygen canister needed for climbing Everest. At the base of the mountain, everyone has oxygen canisters, and some people carry less because its a burden to lug those heavy things along. Some expect everything to go smoothly due to excellent forecasts and expertise of their guides, so they decide to carry just enough to get them up and down the mountain within 60 days. Others know things can get rough, so they will bear the burden of carrying an extra oxygen canister in case things dont go as planned (source: life). But when in youre in the mountains death zone at 26,000 feet, things change. The weather forecasts are off, and now youre suffering from a freak blizzard that extends your trip by another 10 days. You can barely breath due to the high altitude. Previously, that extra oxygen tank was looked at as a burden, but now its worth its weight in gold. Youll thank your lucky stars you have an extra one. Am I saying hold all cash? No, but when youre already heavily invested and new opportunities dont meet your investment criteria, think twice before dropping your extra oxygen tank. Preparing Your Emotions Currently, everyone I speak to wants to invest in real estate. Some people think if they dont buy something now, they will never ever be able to do so in the future. That sentiment concerns me and causes me to be even more conservative than others. Related: What Newbies Should Know About Financing Investment Properties (Versus Homes) During the financial crisis, when stocks were falling to all-time lows, my father had a very clear sense that it was a great time to invest in general. He deployed an immense amount of capital picking up stocks and pushed me towards investing in real estate. He kept telling me that in order to make a great return, you need to have confidence in the long-term future of the market so you can think clearly while other people are losing their heads. What you need to do now is reflect on the last market crash and how you handled yourself. Did you lose your cool? Did you sell off? Did hide your money under a mattress? Or did you start deploying the excess capital you had to pick up assets at a discount? If you did lose your cool, what will you do now to prevent yourself from missing out on a great opportunity? Staying in the Game Many of you are super eager to get started, and thats great! But you have to understand real estate is a multi-decade endeavornot a one-year sprint. The real gains from real estate appear when years of rent increases, appreciation, and currency inflation, which allows us to use weaker future dollars to pay down debt that was denominated in current more expensive dollars, combine. As time goes on your properties loan-to-value ratio will decrease allowing you to pay off your loans completely and free up more cash flow or roll them into larger properties. But in order to be successful, you have to develop staying power to ride out of the ebbs and flows of the market. Many investors have been shaken out of real estate investing due to not expecting the market to go down and paying too high of a price for real estate. Some have short time horizons of five years or less, which increases the volatility of returns and increases the odds of you selling your property in the midst of a downturn. The truth is that if most investors were able to hold on to their cash-flowing properties purchased before the 2006 peak until the present, they would be back to break even. But unfortunately, most investors didnt buy cash-flowing properties with enough margin of safety or had holding periods that were too short. Understanding Conflicting Incentives Real estate agents, syndicators, wholesalers, and other real estate professionals who make money off of transactions have short-term incentives that can go against your long-term goals. This isnt a ding against these real estate professionals. I know many of these professionals, and the ones I associate with do their best to balance their interests and their fiduciaries interest. I dont begrudge them for trying to make a living, but you have to understand they only get paid when money changes hands, so they have the incentive to pressure you into an investment that doesnt make sense. You will also find other investors trying to sell their poorly performing properties at the peak of the cycle to offload their duds to newbie investors. Just because an investor owned a property doesnt mean its the right property for you. Make sure to do your due diligence. A Note on Due Diligence Real estate is a cutthroat business, and you will come across many unscrupulous actors. If you get a referral, whether from BiggerPockets or outside of BiggerPockets, dont assume its a good referral. Do your homework.Always ask people who are trying to steer you into an investment or working with a particular person, Are you receiving a commission from this deal? And if so, are you a licensed real estate professional? If they answer yes to the former, they should be a licensed real estate agent. If they arent, back away because if the deal goes south, you dont have the benefit of the department of real estate backing you up. Winning the Battle and Losing the War Think of the times outside of sports where you have competed for something and were happy with the results. Maybe you fought hard for a promotion by isolating your peers. Perhaps you lowered your commissions in order to beat another real estate agent to a deal. Or maybe you overpaid for a piece of property in order to close the deal. All of these scenarios result in a win in the short-term at the expense of losing the long-term battle. This is known as a Pyrrhic victory. The most important thing in real estate is buying a property at a profitable price. If you screw this up, the rest doesnt really matter. Competing for bad deals lowers your return on real estate, causes undue stress, and leads to poor decisions. Its as if you are fighting for the lowest return on your time and money. If you dont remember anything else I said here, remember this: There will always be another deal. Having the ability to walk away from a deal (or anything else in life) is the most important power to have in real estate. Most investors cant do this, and they will suffer the consequences. Because you have a job, you have the power to walk away from deals when the real estate market gets out of hand. The Difference Between Linear Growth and Exponential GrowthImage via: Tor Bair When newbies get started, its easy for them to get discouraged because real estate is not as easy as purchasing stock. They look at real estate as a linear game, meaning for each unit of time input, they should receive an equal amount of cash output. WRONG! Real estate is more of an exponential game. When you first start off, you will see little or no return in your efforts. It took me about a year of research and hard work before I made my first investment, and that was when the market was buyer friendly. In this market, it could take much longer. Comparing Yourself to Others Will Only Hurt You Never compare your real estate success to others because we all have unique life circumstances. Hearing the first BiggerPockets Podcast episodes about people buying houses in the depths of the recession for a pack of smokes or a jug of moonshine definitely can be disheartening when current prices are in the stratosphere. Dont freak out. Real estate goes through cycles. You need to focus on your own immediate goalsand dont compare yourself to others. Comparing your real estate endeavors to others is a great way to make poor financial decisions. Be wary of hindsight bias. You really would have to try hard not make money in real estate between 2010 and 2013. Some people take absolute credit for their success and are willing to sell bootcamp tickets to cash in on their luck. But due to survivorship bias, we arent hearing the stories from the people who used the same strategies before the financial crisis. The reason why we dont hear from them is bankrupt people dont like to share their stories of failure. They sort of disappear and are ignored. People would much rather chase the gurus who spin their stories of success and wisdom. So when you see someone who did well during this last period of time, realize that a certain aspect of it could be sheer luck, and if so, dont be so eager to attribute it to their sage wisdom. This is a great time for you to build your real estate investing network, learn about real estate investing, and save your money. This is also a time to be cautious when it pertains to deploying capital in real estate. Sure, you might be able to find an opportunity here and there, but you have to take it slow. What Types of Real Estate Investing Should You NOT Do?Fix & Flip or Any Major Rehab Project This strategy is out due to the major time requirement, the knowhow involved in managing such a project, and the increasing cost of construction labor due to a shortage in contractors. Not to mention, if you miss appraisal or your expenses balloon, youre going to have a bad time. Right now, BRRRR is in fashion, but once properties start missing their appraisals, you will see why that method can be so risky and was part of the reason people failed catastrophically in 2006. Tax Liens and Note Investing These investments are doable, but you miss out on rent growth and appreciation. Im assuming youre aiming for rent growth and appreciation. In some cases, the borrower is unable to pay back the loan and you might be able to scoop up the property, but the foreclosure process can take forever and there are no guarantees other parties wont try to bid up the house price via a shill. Most importantly, you have a full-time job and you dont have the time to head over to the courthouse and bid on failing properties. Also, we never count on appreciation when building our financial models, but if we dont have appreciation, it hurts our ability to raise rents down the road because appreciation is a quantitative measure of the desirability of an area and a persons willingness to pay premium prices to live there. Development Projects No. Development projects have a million ways to implode for first-time investors and you really need to know someone you trust can walk you through all the intricacies of development. My family did make money off of our own projects, but that was after years of experience in investing in real estate, building experience in construction, and developing relationships with the city. We had great success, but we also had our butts handed to us on a deal. For newbies, I suggest staying away until you truly understand development. 3 Types of Real Estate Investing You Should Consider Being that you have an awesome career to focus on and family responsibilities, you need to use an investment strategy that fits within those time constraints. I recommended tech employees start with the following are three strategies when they begin investing in real estate. Buy & Hold Within an Hour-to-Two-Hour Drive From Your Residence This is hard for most of us to do in the Bay Area, but in an ideal world, you would be able to easily drive to your property to check on it and make sure your property manager is doing their job. If you decide to pull the trigger on an investment, buy something conservative. It should be a single family house or a small 2-unit duplex. If you dont have experience managing tenants, you shouldnt set yourself up for failure by making your first investment a property that has 3+ units. Ease yourself into it by starting with a duplex. Most importantly, invest in a neighborhood thats no lower than a B-class area, which means low crime, with blue and white-collar workers, within the path of economic development. Out-of-State Buy & Hold With a Property Manager Many employeesare doing this right now. They are buying properties out-of-state and using a property manager to manage them. I suggest you find one primary market to invest in and then do your market research on the state to learn about demographic trends, job trends, government climate for business, earning potential of residents, etc. Then pick a city and neighborhood to research crime rates, schools, location relative to job centers, and the citys general plan for development in the area. For the love of all that is good and science, when youre starting, dont invest in a neighborhood lower than a B. The lower you go, the more crime and the more landlord hassles you will have to deal with (more on that for another post). And most importantly, get yourself on a plane to see the area in person. Nothing beats visiting an area before investing there. Syndication Basically, youre a silent partner in a deal for a large apartment complex or commercial building thats already constructed. For these deals, you need to be an accredited investor or a sophisticated investor. Syndication is similar to buying a stock without having the benefits of liquidity. When you buy a stock, hopefully you read the 10-K to understand the companys business model, opportunities, management, and risks involved in buying the property. Once youve read it, then you make a decision to invest or not. From there, youre basically a silent partner, and hopefully the company does well so you receive a gain on equity or a dividend. For a syndication, instead of reading a 10-K you receive an Offering Memorandum, which is essentially a 10-K but for investing in a large multifamily property, retail building, storage facility, or development deal (development is the riskiest). After reading the terms, if you like the deal, you can write a check to the syndicator for an equity or debt position in the deal. If the deal goes well, you receive regular rent distributions, and once the holding period is over, you receive your principal and appreciation. You can find syndication deals via RealtyShares, Fundrise, and Realty Mogul. Wait, Why Didnt You Mention REITs? Yes, REITs are freely traded on markets and you can get in and out whenever you want, but they have an added level of volatility so they arent for the faint of heart, and when you see those daily price fluctuations, it can compel you to cash out too soon. The problem I have with REITs is its hard to get specific exposure to a desired area, and its hard to see the specific assets and returns in the fund. For instance, Im exposed to Sacramento for my buy and hold, but lets say I want direct exposure to Texas, specifically South Austin near a recent development. Its hard to find an REIT that is micro-targeted. Also, you dont have that much control over the actions of management or exposure to them, so you better hope the team knows what they are doing. That being said, REITs can be great investments; its just up to you if you want to go that route. Spreading Yourself Too Thin Ive known quite a few investors who have scattered their buy and hold rental portfolios over numerous states in the hopes of higher return. While they have the energy and time to do this, they forget that even returns have a law of diminishing returns. Scattering your portfolio creates an added level of complexity for your investments, which can lead to poor decision making. As you grow older, keeping track of the economies, policies, and tax regimes of multiple states can be more trouble than its worth. Assuming this is your buy and hold real estate, I recommend investors go deep in one market before spreading themselves too thin between multiple markets. As you begin to develop a better understanding of your primary market, you can spot opportunities and deploy capital faster than rookie investors. Eventually youll develop rich networks you can tap into to provide your business with the strength it needs to succeed. A Blended Approach to Real Estate Investing You should own buy and hold real estate indefinitely because you have a much longer holding period than standard partnerships or syndications. But you should have exposure to syndications, REITS, and other real estate partnerships to broaden your exposure. Using the latter forms of real estate investing, you receive the benefit from exposure to other markets, while leaning on professional management to protect you from the potential pitfalls of entering markets youre unfamiliar with. Of course, you need to do your due diligence! The only problem with partnerships and syndications is that eventually they end, and youll have a chunk of cash youll need to reinvest. But by having a healthy buy and hold portfolio, youll still have exposure to the market while youre looking for a place to reinvest your capital. Well thats it for now. Let me know what you think. I dont think its because the Republicans have more money because the Democrats tend to be the wealthier group. The majority of the richest people in the world are Democrats or Liberals. Yet, they sure dont look like a happy group of folks . I think a lot of people who are rich were their happiest when they were working hard coming up through the ranks and earning their money. I also think sometimes the social issues they get caught up in when they become wealthy can be frustrating causing many people to lose their tolerance over time.

The Lies The Gop Told Me About Democrats

I have been a Democrat for nearly one year. A GOP friend of mine asked me about the differences between the parties. He is thinking of leaving the GOP as well. Many have followed me out and read my column loyally knowing I will let them know if the Democrats are as bad as the Republicans have told us.

A political party should attract and maintain members based on the inherent good of the partys ideals. The Republican Party has derailed regarding goodness these days. I am ashamed to say it, but I had a hand in the derailing of the party in the late 1970s through the 2012 Presidential Election. I helped perpetuate the myths, a polite way of saying spread the lies, the GOP had to tell to keep the rank-and-file in line.

I spent forty-two years as a member of the Grand Old Party, and thirty-eight years in that period as a propagandist and party sycophant. I made a good living serving my Washington, DC, masters. When one pretends they are working for the greater good, it makes serving ones self at the expense of society as a whole easier to swallow, if one has even a sliver of a conscience.

I witnessed men and women who had sworn to protect and defend The Consitution of the United States sit and hatch plans to strip Muslims of their rights under the law, and call it patriotic.

What are the stories the Republicans tell that are not true about the Democrats?

Of course, if two sides will not compromise, then we get the mess we have today.

The Flawed Statistically Silly New Study That Calls The Republican Party More Dishonest

A new study out today proclaims that the Republican Party is much more dishonest than the Democratic Party. To which I say, meh.

The report, from George Mason Universitys Center for Media and Public Affairs, captured lots of headlines, and the group did a lot to make the conclusions sizzle, by using phrases like Republicans lie more and Republicans are less trustworthy than Democrats in the press statement announcing the study.

Beneath all the hype, though, this report struck me as one of the silliest statistical analyses Ive seen in a long time. While I do think that the truthfulness of the G.O.P. has sunk terribly in the era of Tea Party delusions, studies like this one detract from the real job of trying to keep politicians honest.

Heres whats wrong with the study. Well, almost everything is wrong with the study.

To make its assessment, C.M.P.A. relied on a fact-checking group known as PolitiFact, which examines political statements for their accuracy. The center then selected a periodJanuary 20 through May 22 of this yearand reviewed 100 political claims examined by Politifact during that time. That included 46 statements by Democrats and 54 by Republicans. Then it toted up the number of statements deemed by PolitiFact to be false.

In other words, meh.

The split among Democrats is clear. Left-wing policies may be supported by hipster whites with adolescent enthusiasm, but gentry liberals increasingly have abstract questions about them, and they are rejected roundly by people of color blacks, Latinos, Chinese out of concrete concerns.

Barone continues, There the cry to defund the police is not an abstract matter, as it is still to affluent Manhattanites, or an adolescent rallying cry, as it is to the cash-strapped hipsters in gentrifying Queens and Brooklyn neighborhoods just across the East River from Manhattan.

Black and Latino homeowners with families and jobs know their neighborhoods can be destroyed and their lives ended by violent criminals. They want more, rather than less, policing in their neighborhoods.

Instead, the hardcore leftists threw in heavily behind Maya Wiley the former DiBlasio staffer, Civil Rights Activist, and MSNBC Analyst turned Mayoral Candidate. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called Wiley, a candidate who can center people, racial justice, and economic justice.

Adams seizing on the opportunity lit her up in a scathing statement saying that leftists like Wiley and AOC want to slash the police budgets at a time when Black and brown babies are being shot in our streets, hate crimes are terrorizing Asian and Jewish communities, and innocent New Yorkers are being stabbed and shot.

Older models that tried to show how supermassive black holes interacted with their galaxies ran into a couple of problems.

Large-scale simulations are very good at handling what is going on across an entire galaxy, but they become problematic at smaller scales. When one tries to look too closely at a black hole using such models, uncertainty abounds. On the other hand, “zoom-in” simulation models can provide a great idea of what is going on next to a black hole, but they fail to describe what is going on in the rest of the galaxy.

Combining the benefits of the two into a single model is vital, as the interplay between the processes at the larger and smaller scales is key to understanding the co-evolution of supermassive black holes at the center of galaxies and that of the galaxies themselves. The new model aims to bridge the gap between these older models by starting from the Feedback in Realistic Environments project and adding in details from the large-scale simulations to produce a model that can zoom in as far as a tenth of a parsec as well as model other occurrences at a galactic scale.

Study: Politifact Says Republicans Lie More

The fact-checking organization PolitiFact has found Republicans to be less trustworthy than Democrats, according to a new study.

Fifty-two percent of Republican claims reviewed by the Tampa Bay Times fact-checking operation were rated “mostly false,” false or pants on fire, versus just 24 percent of Democratic statements, according to George Mason University’s Center for Media and Public Affairs. By the same token, 54 percent of Democratic statements were rated as “mostly true” or “true,” compared to just 18 percent of Republican statements.

The CMPA looked at 100 statements — 46 by Democrats, 54 by Republicans — that were fact-checked by PolitiFact between January 20 and May 22. The study’s findings are similar to a previous CMPA study, which found that PolitiFact gave more negative ratings to the Romney campaign than the Obama campaign in 2012.

In the end, many people assume Republicans are richer based on these figures. Although, this is only a look at the richest families and politicians in America though. In everyday American households, it seems that Democrats have a higher mean salary. Its true that many of the wealthiest families in the country are contributing to Republican campaigns. On the contrary, families registered as , statistically speaking.

These findings still have some loopholes in them, of course. For instance, the data was collected over the last 40 years or so. Moreover, it is only based on the most recently collected information. As you know, demographics are constantly changing. These figures may have been affected as well. There is also a margin of error with every type of data collection like this. So, what do you think? Why Democrats Lose On Social Media While Republicans Lie And Win Big

If youre baffled that nearly half of the United States could look at the past four years and say, I want more of that, you arent alone. But thats also not quite what happened.

What did happen is that much of the US electorate lives in a social media echo chamber saturated by disinformation, with climate change and the Green New Deal prime examples. Conservatives have turned the term Green New Deal into an emotional weaponpart of their overall narrative of Democrats as extremist, elitist socialists. It isnt fact-based, but as Daniel Kahneman, who won the Nobel Prize for his work in behavioral economics, explained, No one ever made a decision because of a number. They need a story.

The irony is that there is a compelling, positive story to tell about the Green New Deal that should appeal to a broad base of voters. At a time when the pandemic has thrown millions of people out of work and spawned miles-long food lines, a Green New Deal would create millions of jobs that cant be outsourced overseas. Americans would be put to work installing solar panels, building wind turbines, replacing leaky windows and outmoded appliances with energy-efficient alternatives, restoring farms and forests to store carbon, and undertaking a thousand other climate-friendly activities. With government investment priming the pump, a Green New Deal would boost revenues for business as well, paying for itself through the resulting increased tax revenues.

Why is that?

The Gops New Orthodoxy: Big Lie Or Bust

Rep. Liz Cheney is no closet Democrat or even a political moderate. The 54-year-old Wyoming Republican, the elder daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is an arch conservative who has in the past accused environmental groups like the Sierra Club of supporting U.S. adversaries and defended the birther movement that wrongly insisted Barack Obama was born in Kenya. Her views would seem well suited for the 21st century GOP except for one thing: She could not stomach Donald Trumps claim that the 2020 election was rigged and that he was the rightful winner or, as its is commonly known, the Big Lie. And for this unforgivable sin, the congresswoman is poised to lose her place in party leadership Wednesday as House Republican Conference chair, the third highest position in the caucus.

Its telling that Ms. Cheneys replacement is likely to be Rep. Elise Stefanik, an ideologically flexible New Yorker formerly associated with the partys centrists who has recast herself as a Trump loyalist. And in recent interviews, she has signaled that whatever the message of Republicans in the House, that will be her message, too. That may be how one gets ahead in that increasingly dysfunctional political party but its not in the interests of a nation in desperate need of integrity and reason from that side of the aisle.

The Party Thats Actually Best For The Economy

Many analyses look at which party is best for the economy. A study from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that Democratic presidents since World War II have performed much better than Republicans. On average, Democratic presidents grew the economy 4.4% each year versus 2.5% for Republicans.

A study by Princeton University economists Alan Blinder and Mark Watson found that the economy performs better when the president is a Democrat. They report that by many measures, the performance gap is startlingly large. Between Truman and Obama, growth was 1.8% higher under Democrats than Republicans.

A Hudson Institute study found that the six years with the best growth were evenly split between Republican and Democrat presidents.

Most of these evaluations measure growth during the presidents term in office. But no president has control over the growth added during his first year. The budget for that fiscal year was already set by the previous president, so you should compare the gross domestic product at the end of the presidents last budget to the end of his predecessors last budget.

For Obama, that would be the fiscal year from October 1, 2009, to September 30, 2018. Thats FY 2010 through FY 2017. During that time, GDP increased from $15.6 trillion to $17.7 trillion, or by 14%. Thats 1.7% a year.

The Big List Of Alleged Malefactors

Each person identified as indicted, from 56 years of Executive branch investigations, is listed in Figure 4. Figure 5 provides the numbers, thus far, for the Trump administration. Two years into his term, President Trump has already proved greater than all but one of the previous 10 Presidents in number of indictments the Administration has scored. Congratulations Mr. Trump, you are the Greatest! Of course, the information in Figure 5 that is accurate in the morning may be out of date by the afternoon.

The Final Reports of the 28 Special Prosecution, Special Prosecutor, and Independent Counsel investigations between 1973 and 1999 are the go-to source for who was indicted for what. Before an investigation closes down it will be clear if the indictment itself survives legal challenge; cases will go to trial; there will be decisions. But the independent investigation may well close down before appeals are heard and decided. Therefore, the final reports are not, in some cases, the last word on total convictions and jail time. That still required further research of court records, news stories, and obituaries.

It is not necessary to read the many hundreds of pages of most of these documents for the raw numbers. There are, though, many engrossing distractions in the tales of greed for power or money, ambition, obstruction, arrogance, loyalty, ideological zealotry, duplicity, error and incompetence the reports lay out in generally careful legal language.

Lies And The Lying Liars Who Get Away

More recently, and more pertinent to this election: Hillary Clinton has lied about her e-mail scandal on a breadth unprecedented even within the Democratic Party. In many ways her lies about her e-mail server are more troubling and more consequential than Trumps scattershot dishonesty. You get the sense that Trump lies about things because hes not too bright and cant think very quickly. Clinton, on the other hand, lies about her e-mail server because she has most likely compromised American national security, endangered American lives, and wants to avoid going to jail.

She claimed to have turned over all of her work-related e-mails. That was a lie. She claimed she hadnt transmitted any classified information. That was a lie. She claimed she hadnt transmitted any information marked classified. That was a lie. She claimed that she had never been subpoenaed in regards to her e-mail. That, too, was a lie. She claimed the FBI had considered her account truthful. Another lie.

Oh, also: President Obama originally denied having any knowledge about Clintons private e-mail server. That was a big-time lie. Clintons e-mail scandal has been one gigantic lie from start to finish.

These are just a few examples of liberal dishonesty; plenty more could easily be produced. While it is true that newspapers and other media outlets have fact-checked many of these lies, it is impossible to argue that the responses from the media have been the same.

The meaning today of the Big Lie almost always refers to the false claim by Donald Trump and his right-wing cronies that the 2020 presidential election was somehow stolen by the left and Joe Biden, with the help of foreign agents.

Not only is this claim false, it is absurdly false.

This is hardly the first Big Lie from the right. Not even close. The right has been promulgating Big Lies for decades.

In fact, lying is the only way the right wing can win elections. After all, its policies are profoundly unpopular with ordinary people because the right-wing favors the 1% rich over the 99% working and middle classes.

How in the world could 1% of the population ever win elections over the 99%? Simple. The 1% bamboozles the 99%. To win elections, the right must conceal its true intentions from the voters and instead engage in manipulative tactics, like lying and fearmongering.

The lies are not just little lies.They are whoppers. They are the complete opposite of the truth. They are 180 degrees from the truth. They are the polar opposite of the truth, like from the North Pole all the way to the South Pole. Hence the term Big Lie.

Yet, shockingly, many of these egregious lies actually work. They take hold. They create a false impression in the mind of the public.

Once again, this is the exact opposite of the truth. Dictatorships and fascism are right-wing, not left-wing.

Shockingly, this nonsense actually works.

How Increasing Ideological Uniformity And Partisan Antipathy Affect Politics Compromise And Everyday Life

Republicans and Democrats are more divided along ideological lines and partisan antipathy is deeper and more extensive than at any point in the last two decades. These trends manifest themselves in myriad ways, both in politics and in everyday life. And a new survey of 10,000 adults nationwide finds that these divisions are greatest among those who are the most engaged and active in the political process.

The overall share of Americans who express consistently conservative or consistently liberal opinions has doubled over the past two decades from 10% to 21%. And ideological thinking is now much more closely aligned with partisanship than in the past. As a result, ideological overlap between the two parties has diminished: Today, 92% of Republicans are to the right of the median Democrat, and 94% of Democrats are to the left of the median Republican.

Partisan animosity has increased substantially over the same period. In each party, the share with a highly negative view of the opposing party has more than doubled since 1994. Republicans Lie More Than Democrats

In the current post-fact, hyper-partisan era of politics, its hard to separate accusations of dishonesty from political sparring. If the liberal mainstream media accuses a conservative politician of lying, the conservatives fight back by alleging that theres a bias, and vice versa.

Luckily, several fact-checking sites have attempted to rise above the fray, including PolitiFact.com and the Washington Posts Fact Checker. And while theyre nonpartisan in approach, a recent study of PolitiFact.coms results by the Center for Media and Public Affairs at George Mason University reveals something that will please one party more than another: Republicans lie more than Democrats, as much as three times as often during Obamas second term. While this may not come as a surprise from a party that denies certain scientific basics , the study puts the two parties relationships with honesty into distinct relief:

While these stats are pretty damning, in the multi-channel era of media consumption, it may be harder than it should to get this information to the people who need to hear it: conservative or conservative-leaning voters.

Its not just race and religion, though. Party allegiances are now also tied to education, gender and age. Americans have sorted themselves more completely and rigidly than any time in recent history.

For the 100 years prior to Lincoln the democrats were historically the party that supported slavery in the south. In 1860 when Lincoln was elected the democrats elected a person who debated Lincoln and argued why the idea of freeing the slaves was stupid.

Lincoln won even though most of the nation knew that we were on the verge of the most horrible conflict in history. Lincoln wanted to avoid this war but the democrats wouldnt concede even the smallest point.

Lincoln drew a line in the sand. He wouldnt go to war and kill 6 million Americans to free the slaves as long as the democrat states would agree to not let slavery spread to any new states.

The democrats wouldnt accept that. Like todays democrats they were absolutely convinced and not very negotiating. They wanted their slavery and they believed in it.

They felt slavery would be imperiled if it wasnt allowed to grow. They wanted more slave owners to get more slave promoting voters like illegal immigrants today.

Lincoln went to war and adjusted for population 6 million Americans died. Even if you dont adjust for population the number who died in the war is more than the sum of all American deaths in all wars since.

The devastation was horrendous. One of the generals in the north practiced a burn it to the ground policy that denuded whole cities. The south was crushed.

Yet now the Republican party leadership says that none of that really happened and theyre asking people to believe a series of lies about that days events.

This week, as the U.S. House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol holds its first hearings, it is time for Democrats in Congress to say good riddance to Republican colleagues who engage in such denialism.

First, Senate Republicans defeated efforts to create a bipartisan commission modeled after the one that investigated the 9/11 terror attacks. They did so despite the fact that Democratic leaders in Congress acceded to Republican demands about the commissions composition, powers, and the deadline for its work.

That is exactly the Republican goal.
