Scriddler Thought...

Jonathan will tie/wear his noose differently depending on what the night's job entails. Or a scuffle with batman, a knot that can easily be released. For a date night, something fancy and artsy. For a typical night of fright, the casual noose is required

And Edward always notices these changes. He doesn't point it out or anything, it's kind of an unspoken way for the two to communicate. The noose is a message that only Edward can decode.
