The Great Naoya Inoue

There's just no denying that Naoya Inoue is a special kind of fighter. Watching Inoue in action is a case study of brilliance. That's not because he is original and the first of his kind or an awkward fighter who happens to make it work in the mold of Muhammad Ali or Roy Jones Jr. He doesn't need to be original or awkward. The manner in which he violently and artistically goes about his job works. His boxing IQ, timing, power, speed, and grasp of fundamentals make Inoue the perfect, complete fighter.

'The Monster' is now a two-time undisputed world champion in the space of a year. He is sprinting towards greatness. On boxing Day, Inoue thrilled all in attendance at the Ariake Arena in his native Japan, which has become his fortress, by knocking out fellow unified super bantamweight champion Marlon Tapales in the tenth round.

Inoue added the IBF and WBA super bantamweight titles to his WBC and WBO titles, acquired in July in his maiden 122 lbs outing against Stephen Fulton, to become the first-ever undisputed super bantamweight world champion. This was after his accomplishments in December 2022, when Inoue became the first undisputed bantamweight world champion in 50 years. In 2023, in two fights after moving up, he dethroned both champions to become King. This man from Japan is on a path towards inserting his name in rarefied air.

With a snapping, accurate jab, fierce combinations, darting in and out of range, and ripping shots through the high guard, Inoue is an in-prime great at the peak of his powers. Like any pound-for-pound great, enjoy him while he's around.

Unless Inoue continues moving up through the weights, it is difficult to imagine anyone at super bantamweight troubling the Japanese star. Frankly, Inoue does not need to move up in a hurry. Think of Marvelous Marvin Hagler, one of the greatest champions ever, who spent the entirety of his career as a middleweight. Being a multi-weight world champion is not a necessity for greatness.

Moving around weight divisions and picking up titles is all too common in boxing nowadays. Cleaning out a division is rare.

Inoue can stay at 122 lbs for as long as he can and define his boxing legacy at this weight. Fights against the likes of Luis Nery, John Riel Casimero, Murodjon Akhmadaliev, and Sam Goodman are all very good fights for Inoue.

In the post-fight interview, Inoue said a move up to featherweight can wait. Speaking through an interpreter, Inoue stated he will continue campaigning at super bantamweight, and there are currently ongoing negotiations for a May 2024 showdown.

This opponent is expected to be the Mexican Nery.

At 126 lbs, Rafael Espinoza shocked Cuban rising star Robeisy Ramirez in a thrilling fight of the year candidate. Brandon Figueroa is aligned with PBC. Emanuel Navarrete moved up to 130 lbs last year, and Luis Alberto Lopez is expected to follow Navarrete in the not-too-distant future. Inoue will be happy to let the featherweight division shape up accordingly while he builds on his Hall of Fame career at 122 lbs.

Circumstances have presented Inoue with the opportunity to historically stamp his place in his most recent weight class before the possibility of moving up to pursue being the first undisputed featherweight champion since Vicente Saldivar initially retired in 1967.

Inoue is one of those special talents that you need to cherish while he's around. Watching Inoue perform his craft is watching history play out before your eyes. Enjoy the journey.

This Week In BL - Cute Kisses, I’m Dropping Shows & Korea Is Getting into the Sequel Game Big Time

Aug 2022 Wk 1

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying the most.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Vice Versa (Sat on YT) Ep 4 of 12 - Despite the fact that I like all of the actors, I’m not particularly interested in the friendship group around the script writing aspect. It’s giving me Theory of Love vibes. And you know I am not a fan of that BL. I knew the quote right away. PRAISE ME! Turns out I have 130 IQ entirely wasted on cheesy dialogue from GMMTV shows. I wish they would challenge me by dropping a quote from something a bit more obscure. I really am growing to enjoy the teasing dynamic of the leads. Also, the fact that there’s no clear seme/uke. This is what I wanted Enchante to be! I also find the “writing on each other” habit quite cute. Nice couple language invention. Jimmy’s confident gay is giving me life, nice to see this archetype in a main pair from GMMTV. That said, the pacing concerns me. Ep 4 is awful early for a kiss. 

21 Days Theory (Sun YT ) Ep 1 of 8 - high school BL pulp, high angst, messy, cheating?, and a secret crush. Okay this explains something: I was wondering where my favorite character from the En of Love: Love Mechanics (James) went. The actor is leading out this BL as the seme, X! All cards on the table? I REALLY like this one. Way more than I expected. It reminds me of Blueming crossed with Make it Right (never forget I’m the world’s foremost Make It Right apologist, and the lead even looks a little like Fuse). Why do I like it? 1. GAY UNCLE character!!! We almost never get gay fam from Thailand. This makes me so happy. 2. Boys in blue shorts are back! 3. Seme is already pining, uke is tsundere but with reason. So plot? Our uke is a pretty boy who always comes in second and his nerd & jock (also from EoL) besties. There’s some plot to do with an influencer and possible side NOONA romance. Honestly, I couldn’t ask for more!

Coffee Melody (Mon Viki) Ep 3 of 10 - I love a smile kiss. I like how very out and very gay Yi is, with his family and in life. It’s pleasing to see in a BL of any kind. This is very much a slow moving pulp just with higher than expected production values. Jean & Nuea are cute. Nuea better be nice to my baby flame. Frankly, I’m slowly falling in love with the entire coffee shop family. I couldn’t care less about the band, but of course I couldn’t care less about a band. 

Love Mechanics (Sun WeTV) Ep 7 of 10 - When they are together as a couple, VeeMark are a GREAT couple, like FighterTutor level, only slightly less sappy. But the rest of time is just messy. For the record, Vee: I entirely support you stopping Mark’s singing with kisses! All singing should be stopped with kisses forthwith. And now, the break up: Honestly I would’ve done exactly what Mark did. I do not think it’s victim blaming. Vee knew all Ploy‘s tricks. They were together for a long time. He would’ve been able to predict her behavior and should’ve backed away from her and put space between them. Also he could just shake her off, girl or not. I’m with Mark on this one, dump his ass. 

Unforgotten Night (Weds on GaGa) Ep 7 of 12 - I like the episode this week. The main couple spent most of it apart which contributed greatly to my enjoyment. TRASH WATCH IS HERE!

Check Out (Sat IQIYI) Ep 9 of 12 - their chemistry is quite good. Yep, that’s it. 

My Secret Love (Sat YT) Ep 10 of 12 - Do you know what the worst thing about this show is? The fact that this wasn’t the final episode like I had originally thought? Well, yes. But also, not only is the chemistry between most of the couples really off (and the lead pair is terrible) but the chemistry of the friendship groups is off too. Normally, Thailand can handle friendship groups well. But these two different groups? I don’t believe they’re friends at all. I’m happy that TimMai got resolved, but I’m still on Pete’s side. I don’t think Tim had any right to punch him. They were both drunk.  

Even Sun (Wed iQIYI) Ep 6fin - It’s the finale and it’s still extremely boring. I will probably forget about this show in about 5 minutes. Shame they squandered BouPrem on a shoddy script. 5/10 ONLY WATCH IF YOU HAVE NO LIFE

Minato Shouji Coin Laundry (Japan Weds GaGa) Ep 6 - I love this so so damn much, but thank heavens Shin turns 18 next episode. SQUEE WATCH ALONG  

Want to See You (Vietnam YT) Ep 11 -  I’m pretty sure when they sub “childless” they actually mean “sterile.” There was a lot of domesticity flashback memories and some pining. Basically Vietnam’s limp version of a classic Ep 11 of DOOM! or should that be “doom” (said in kawaii voice)? 

Senpai, Danjite Koidewa! (Japan Fri Viki) Ep 7 - Japan holding down Frigay these days with this one show, although Eclipse starts next week, (thank fuck, because this one sure isn’t doing it for me). I’m now getting used the POV switch to the seme in the penultimate episode. It’s OK I guess? In general, I think this one is just a little too much cringe for me without enough kawaii to balance it out. I’m not invested enough in the characters to even get embarrassed for them. That’s a bad sign.

On Cloud Nine (Sat YouTube) Ep 1 of 6 - a country-set atmospheric series from MindTrio. Oh I don’t like it. It’s very like Calculating Love (also dropped), or The Moment, like those early Star Hunter offerings. I don’t need this kind of pulp in my life anymore, there’s plenty of Thai BL to go around. This was an easy DNF. As opposed to...

War of Y (Tues AISPLY) Ep 1 of 20 (seriously?!) started airing. Here’s my initial thoughts and what I’m gonna do about it. Cheewin’s nonsense (starring the boys from Y-Destiny and SCOY) is better than any of us have a right to expect but I don’t... like it. And I don’t like it for the same reason I don’t like rockstar romances... celebrities (and their people) are assholes. This show features a bunch of actors behaving like actors, managers behaving like managers, all of them predators or victims or both. I’ve dropped before for less (Call It What You Want) and I’ll drop again. Then again I loved Lovely Writer - but I think that’s because Sib is meant to be a sinister dick who’s only an actor because it gets him closer to Gene, and I like that approach. War of Y is just a collection of fragile egos easily traumatized by their own desires (and the needs/demands of others) - it’s brutal to watch. BillySeng are killing it, but.... it hurts, and not in a good way. I’m going to save it and binge all at once when I am feeling bored and resilient. So WoY has been removed from my watch rotation for the time being. Sorry.

Meanwhile, deep cut callback old timers, anyone else reminded of the original PerthSaint Twitter crash with WoY’s casting couch bit on ep 1? Just me?)

So that’s 2 BLs dropped by me this week. I’m feeling mean, apparently. 

Japan’s Takara-kun to Amagi-kun released a teaser (no subs, on FB), premieres Aug 18 on MBS (taking over Senpai's time slot) not sure on international. But hoping for Viki again. 

Looking very aesthetically high school KBL there, Japan. Never say you’re selling out?

THAILAND

Thailand announced a new BL, Roommate the series. Looks like it may have a BL and a GL plot. That’s it, that’s all I got. 

Thai BL Ai Long Nhai from Mflow Entertainment premieres September 26 on Ch3Thailand (no word on international). About a man expelled from foreign university who returns to Thai uni in disgrace and meets A Boy. Adapted from a Y-novel, stars Porsche (Together with Me) & Arm - who are IRL husbands.

KOREA

Apparently Korea is planning a remake of Why R U? which I find absolutely hilarious. I mean if Korea remakes it, we lose all the sexy and then would we have a story? No we would not. It’d be like one of those mesh shopping bags.  

Studio Yanggwibi (Korea) has announced casting for 2023′s Love Class 2 AKA Love Class Season 2 (filming starts November). I’m assuming this is a whole new pairing based on the same ”love class” premise (which was badly underused in the first installment). So It could also be GL or het. I liked Love Class more than many and I’m intrigued by this approach to a BL series. 

Speaking of Korea doing strange things, Kim Ji Woong & Yoon Seo Bin of Kissable Lips continue to co-brand (I’m gonna call them KissableLips henceforth). IMHO they are the first Korean BL pair to co-brand to this extent - continuing social media activities long after their series ended. They are officially slated for a new series as a pair (not a sequel): Circumstances of Pungdeok Villa Room 304 from Idol Romance. “A happy-go-lucky third-generation chaebol receives an ultimatum from daddy to: 1. Leave the house penniless and survive for 2 years; and 2. Achieve results as team leader in a new business venture. The owner of the villa he lands in ignores and disregards him. However, it turns out they work in the same company.” Let the cohabitation office drama commence. I like them a lot and am pleased to see them get another drama.

While Saturgay remains the gayest, Frigay is back: Senpai finishes its run but SantaEarth’s My Only 12% starts in iQIYI and so does The Eclipse (my top pick from GMMTV’s 2022 line up) on YouTube. Also Papa & Daddy 2 starts tomorrow on GaGa.

Alex: Yeah thank you for joining us! For those of you who don't know, jasper designed our header.

Jasper: So, did y'all dress up for halloween this year?

Alex: Unfortunately because of COVID, I wasn't able to do much of anything this year. Did you?

Sam: No, not this time. I usually love halloween but with covid and my health problems, it was too much of a risk

Jasper: My little sister wanted to be the Scooby Gang, so we dressed up and went to my grand parent's to show them

Alex: That's so cool!

Sam: Aww that's adorable!

Jasper: I was Velma. If you look on my blog there's a bunch of posts lmao

Alex:Yeah I heard about that lol

Sam:Wait didn't you say something about femboy Velma?

Jasper: Yep, I was a secret femboy Velma

Alex: Nice!

Jasper: Yeah, it broke my dysphoria which was cool lmao.

Jasper: Do y'all have any "weird" halloween traditions?

Sam: I don't have a weird one but I watch Jennifer's body which is a horror movie every year

Alex: Not weird or anything out of the usual. We sit out on the driveway and give candy to the people who come by

Jasper: We always take photos squatting, no matter the outfit or time of year. Also, we always watch Hocus Pokus before we go to bed

Jasper: It is!

Alex: What's that movie about?

Jasper: So this kid is being an idiot and lights a candle, summoning these witched that were killed during the Salem Witch Trials, and then they have to try to banish them with the help of this cat Binx, which is actually the brother of one of the children that the Witches killed, and eventually they do, and it's one of my favourite movies.

Alex: Oooh that sounds very interesting!

Sam: Kids in movies are such idiots, I swear

Jasper: I know!!! It's a pretty good movie, you can rent it on Amazon Prime for like $3

Sam: Plus binx is a great cat name

Jasper: It is!! I named one of my plants after Binx lmao

Alex: The directors of the movies are probably trying to relate to people

Jasper: Maybe, but in every movie the characters are so dumb it's startling

Alex: Exactly

Sam: Like if there's a creepy noise, DON'T GO TOWARDS THE CREEPY NOISE

Alex: Don't hide in the house, get out of it and run awayyyy

Jasper: RIGHT???? You'd expect they'd have an IQ above room temperature and not go TOWARDS the scary things, or get the FRICK OFF OF THE FLOOR WHEN THEY FALL

Sam: If a huge mansion is surprisingly cheap and the person who sold it to you is sketchy, IT'S HAUNTED

Jasper: RIGHT???

Sam: How stupid can the characters really be?

Alex: How stupid are the people writing the scripts

Jasper: I don't know, but it's so funny and frustrating

Sam: Yeah like I'll be watching a horror movie and I'll just be screaming at the people the entire time

Jasper: I talk to them like I'm talking to a 4yo.

Sam: They have the mental capacity of a 4yo anyway

Alex: The real scary stuff is the minds of the characters instead of the actual scary stuff

Jasper:

Sam: YES

Jasper: Aren't people supposed to get smarter and make better decisions when they're scared?

Sam: Right??

Alex: Exactlyyyy

Jasper: so yeah lmao

Alex: Anything you guys are looking forward to this year?

Jasper: Thanksgiving

Sam: I'm looking forward to 2020 getting over

Jasper: BETTER ANSWER

Sam: But at the same time I'm scared 2021 will be worse

Alex: I've seen tumblr ads for an Infiniti car that's a 2022 model. They hate this year so much they're skipping 2021

When discussing the greats of boxing, those fighters with cemented legacies, conversations always lead to boxers who laced gloves in the past. Discussions rarely include active fighters. However, we do have fighters still plying their trade today who can be considered greats of the sport. They can hang up their gloves today, and their legacies are cemented and their names written in the history books.

Let’s have a look at some of these active greats.

Simply put, Naoya Inoue is an all-time great in his prime. No fighter today, at bantamweight or below, can beat the current bantamweight king.

Excitingly, aged 29, there is still time for Inoue to become even more special. The Japanese superstar recently became the undisputed bantamweight champion, the first man to achieve this historic feat since Panamanian Enrique Pinder in 1972. Inoue became the first bantamweight to hold all titles in the four-belt era. He is the first Japanese/Asian four-belt undisputed world champion too. 

Now, the man known as “The Monster” is expected to move up in weight to super bantamweight and chase a world title in his fourth weight division.

Inoue is the biggest pound-for-pound puncher in the sport alongside Deontay Wilder, with an abundance of IQ, speed, power, and timing. Inoue is capable of demolishing the very best and making it look effortless. A devastating knockout artist with technical precision, possessing an arsenal of knockout punches. Inoue is not merely a slugger. He has a variety of punches with which he can knock an opponent out, delivered behind a boxer-first approach. 

One of the most gifted pound-for-pound fighters in recent times. Two-fisted power with a controlled, well-schooled style.

Katie Taylor (22-0, 6 KOs)

Ireland’s Katie Taylor is an active legend. The word ‘Legend’ can be dished out ever so easily time and again, but Taylor is worthy of such a lofty status. Arguably the greatest Irish sportsperson, she is in the conversation for the greatest woman’s fighter of all time with an unblemished professional career.

A London 2012 Olympic gold medalist with five consecutive gold medals at the world championships, she became undisputed lightweight champion as a professional, moved up to become WBO super lightweight champion, then moved back down and defended her undisputed lightweight titles seven times.

At 36, Taylor is running out of opponents and achievements to be ticked before signing off on her career. She has now beaten most of the fighters of her era and is searching harder than ever for further accomplishments to strive towards before the greatest of all undefeated foes, Father Time, threatens to take her undefeated record.

Claressa Shields (13-0, 2 KOs)

Claressa Shields’ professional career has been the perfect example of what domination means. Domination is more than merely beating those put in front of you. It’s conclusively beating the best standing across the ring to become the undisputed ruler. 

A two-time Olympic gold medalist, a unified champion at super middleweight since her fourth professional fight, then became undisputed champion at middleweight and super welterweight. Shields has created history, becoming the only fighter in the four-belt era to become the undisputed champion in two weight divisions.

The determining factor for measuring greatness comes down to the quality of opposition. Shields’ most recent win was against unbeaten knockout artist Savannah Marshall, and before that, she inflicted a first career loss on Ema Kozin. 

Christina Hammer was an unbeaten champion, reigning for nearly nine years, before Shields defeated her via unanimous decision in April 2019. Before that, Shields showed guts to rise from the canvas in the first round to defeat the long-reigning super welterweight champion, Hanna Gabriels. 

Women who had become accustomed to winning at the highest level were defeated on a consistent basis by the self-proclaimed “GWOAT.” 

With the Marshall win, Shields avenged her only loss both as an amateur and professional. With time, her status as GWOAT (Greatest Woman Of All Time) will increase and further invalidity. This all-time great has nothing further to prove. 

Vasiliy Lomachenko (17-2, 11 KOs)

Vasiliy Lomachenko is a modern great. This should not be up for debate. “Which elite opponents has he beaten?” they may ask, and that is a valid question.

However, a man who frequently overcomes world-class opposition in the space of 19 professional fights while displaying a unique and phenomenal skill set is truly a fighter to behold. 

He defeated an unbeaten Gary Russell Jr to become a world champion in his third professional fight, made an unbeaten Nicholas Walters quit in the corner, also made an unbeaten Guillermo Rigondeaux quit, stopped an in-prime and gifted Jorge Linares, then beat Jose Pedraza, Luke Campbell, Masayoshi Nakatani, Richard Commey and Jamaine Ortiz. “The Matrix” defeated all of these guys while proving to be a master of timing and space, with sensational footwork and a master of feints. He punches with great accuracy and uses angles brilliantly.

As a lightweight, Lomachenko is currently operating in a weight division packed with young, hungry sharks, circling and waiting for the opportunity to capitalize on what remains of Lomachenko’s once formidable abilities to get a big scalp and bolster their own brand and legacies.

Although Lomachenko has not slowed down to the extent where immediate concern and action are required, signs have started appearing that the end is near.

Once the time is called for this great career, flowers need to be given. Let’s not doubt the abilities of a man who should be embraced. 

Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez (51-4, 41 KOs)

Another active all-time great in the lower-weight divisions, hailing from Nicaragua, Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez, was mentored by the greatest boxer to ever come out of Nicaragua, Alexis Arguello. Arguello was also a very polite and nice man outside the ring, but he was an assassin inside it, breaking opponents down behind a wicked left jab and brutal two-handed power. Chocolatito is similar. So angelic and polite outside the ring but demonic inside it. He looks mean, with speed and power, while possessing finesse, mastery of distance, poise, and intelligence behind that unrelenting aggression.  

Chocolatito managed to do something his mentor failed to do twice, becoming a four-weight division champion. Furthermore, like Arguello, Chocolatito has always carried himself with dignity and grace. If Arguello were around today, he would undoubtedly be full of admiration and appreciation for the man he once took under his wings.

Following his majority decision loss to Juan Francisco Estrada in their classic trilogy fight recently, Chocolatito was unsure whether he would resume his career.

Once he finally hangs up the gloves, Chocolatito is a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

Gennadiy Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs)

Rock-hard chin. Highlight-reel knockouts. Always striving to fight the toughest, never shying from any challenges. The definition of a modern great. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin is the kind of fighter you will miss when he’s gone. GGG is one of the last true ring greats active today. A true warrior, embodying a fighter both physically and spiritually. In Ancient Rome, special classes of gladiators would be pitted against lions. Golovkin has the soul of such gladiators. He could be placed in a Colosseum with a lion, no questions asked about how much money he is getting.

Although still a formidable force, Golovkin is now showing signs he is no longer the great middleweight of old, and the end is surely not far away.

One of the greatest middleweights of all time and one of the greatest modern fighters; embrace him while you can.

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs)

Alvarez is a four-weight division champion and the first undisputed four-belt super middleweight world champion in boxing history. Arguably one of the greatest super middleweights of all time.

Canelo has plans to avenge his loss to light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol. However, whatever the result of this potential rematch, Canelo has nothing more to prove. 62 professional fights, one of the most active fighters in current times, always seeking the most challenging fights and, more times than not, prevailing to create history. One of the best pound-for-pound stars in boxing for years and is arguably the biggest star in boxing today. Canelo is 32 years of age, having been a professional since 2005, aged 15. The Mexican has been active for a long time and may only be active for a few more years. Throwback fighter.

Oleksandr Usyk (20-0, 13 KOs)

In today’s boxing, most elite boxers weigh up their options. It’s not as simple as the best facing the best. They weigh up each fight on its risk-reward ratio. Not Oleksandr Usyk. The Ukrainian became undisputed cruiserweight champion by going to the backyards of three undefeated champions to win all four belts, then defended all four belts against Tony Bellew in Manchester with a brutal eighth-round stoppage to cap off his historic cruiserweight run.

Seeking a challenge and a real legacy, with nothing further to prove at cruiserweight, Usyk moved up to heavyweight. After two settling-in fights, he fought and out-boxed unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in London. He defeated Joshua again in Jeddah to satisfy the rematch requirements and is now free from any obligations.

What truly marks Usyk as a special generational fighter, on top of his undoubted accomplishments and skill set, is his mentality.

Following the second Joshua win, Usyk said: “I want to fight him (Fury), and if I’m not fighting Tyson Fury, I’m not fighting at all.” 

These are not just mere words from Usyk, as his actions have reflected this mindset throughout his nine-year professional career. This is a rare and precious mentality in today’s boxing and one to be savored. 

Oleksandr The Great, a real road warrior, made a name for himself by defeating hometown favorites in front of hostile crowds and, on occasion, harsh judges.

A take-on-all-comers attitude to match a flawless 20-0 record. Usyk is an active pound-for-pound great. A top two cruiserweight of all time alongside Evander Holyfield, and the greatest southpaw heavyweight ever, seeking an undisputed showdown against Tyson Fury to cement the greatest heavyweight of this era.

On the way, not quite there...

Terence Crawford (39-0, 30 KOs)

Quite possibly the most gifted boxer on the planet. Based solely on the ‘eye test,’ watching Crawford’s adaptability and pure level of skill, it can easily be argued that Crawford is the best all-around boxer in the sport. A complete fighter with a sublime skill set. Nobody can question Crawford’s talent.

However, resume matters. “Who did he beat?” many will ask. ’Bud’ has the talent to be recognized as an all-time great. Still, with a resume that is lacking, his legacy won’t be remembered like it could have, in the future, if Crawford does not secure a legacy-defining showdown against unified welterweight ruler and main generational rival Errol Spence Jr, or at least undisputed super welterweight champion, Jermell Charlo.

To quote Samuel L Jackson in the movie, Fresh: “Anything lost can be found again, except for time wasted.”

At 35, time is now ticking for Crawford to secure a career-defining victory. One which would allow his resume to create the legacy his talent deserves.

Tyson Fury (33-0-1, 24 KOs)

The modern-day heavyweight boxing enigma. An unorthodox 6ft 9in switch-hitting heavyweight with elite ring IQ, slickness, fast feet, and coordination. Speed and agility, which defies logic when it comes to such a big man who weighs over 260 lbs. Not to mention his remarkable powers of recovery, getting up four times in three fights against Wilder, one of the hardest hitters of all time. 

Tyson Fury would provide a stern challenge for any heavyweight who has ever lived. Ability-wise, he is up there with the greats.

However, more work is needed to establish himself as the true greatest heavyweight of his generation and an all-time great. 

Fury holds one belt, and the other three are held by a consensus top 3 pound-for-pound fighter on the planet. Proving himself to be the greatest of his era still needs to be done.

Joshua and Joe Joyce are also active heavyweights, amongst the best, who would present Fury with intriguing challenges that Fury has yet to face. 

If Fury were to face the best of the division and prevail, unifying and defending his titles against the biggest challenges like the greats have done, his resume would be worthy of an all-time great heavyweight champion.

AMAZON COULD SOON BEGIN SHIPPING MEDICAL DEVICES, SUPPLIES: Over the past year, Amazon obtained several wholesale pharmacy licenses in a number of US states, leading to speculation that the company may enter the pharmaceutical market. However, earlier this week, correspondence between the company and regulators in Tennessee and Indiana revealed that Amazon will not be using the licenses to sell and store prescription drugs, according to investment firm Jeffries. Instead, the company will likely begin shipping medical devices and supplies in its Indiana fulfillment center. 

Shipping devices and supplies is the path of least resistance for Amazon as it dips its toes in the pharmaceutical industry. The prescription drug market presents a lucrative opportunity for the company, however, it’s riddled with regulatory hurdles. Amazon’s decision is likely in part to avoid the red tape associated with the Wholesale Drug Distribution Act, Jefferies notes. 

Although Amazon may not be looking to store or ship drugs now, that doesn’t mean it won’t in the future. And while the small margins for brick-and-mortar pharmacies forced some companies like Target to sell their offerings, Amazon could leverage the position to become an intermediary between the pharmacies and health plan providers — what is known as a pharmacy benefits manager (PBM) — to begin negotiating with drug makers and pharmacies to reduce prices, effectively undercutting incumbent PBMs.

The PBM industry is ripe for disruption, presenting a significant opportunity for Amazon.

The PBM industry is a hugely valuable and heavily consolidated. The three largest PBMs in the US, Express Scripts, CVS, and Optum Rx, control roughly two-thirds of the $423 billion market. 

Moreover, PBMs have recently suffered a bout of negative press exposing their hand in the inflating cost of drugs in the US. This was caused, in large part, by the opacity of the PBM industry, which allowed the companies to recommend exorbitant prices for prescription medication and then collect a large percentage of the spread for themselves. 

Drug makers and health plan providers looking for better revenue cuts could welcome the competition Amazon would introduce. Amazon’s entry could bring more efficiency to the process, Takeda Pharmaceutical CEO Christopher Weber told Bloomberg.

BI IntelligenceFDA APPROVES MARKETING FOR THE FIRST DEVICE TO TREAT OPIOID WITHDRAWALS: Opioids are notoriously addictive, and withdrawal symptoms are a massive hurdle to overcoming addiction that’s not only draining on the US healthcare system, but on employers and businesses. In 2013, prescription opioid dependence, abuse, and overdose cost the US more than $78 billion — $29 billion of which was due to increased healthcare and substance abuse treatment costs, according to the CDC. On Wednesday, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the marketing of a wearable that can electronically treat the symptoms of opioid withdrawals such as sweating, tremors, nausea, joint pain, and anxiety. The device, called the “NSS-2 Bridge,” is placed behind patient’s ears and sends electronic pulses to specific cranial nerves to treat some withdrawal symptoms. This can help opioid-dependent patients with the process of weaning themselves off pain medication. In a clinical trial of 73 patients, the Bridge helped all participants drop at least 31% on the clinical opiate withdrawal scale (COWS) within 30 minutes of use. Electronic wearables are showing promise as a form of chronic pain management, and this latest FDA-approved device could pave the way for a range of devices that diminish patients’ heavy dependence on prescription medication. The FDA had approved the Bridge device’s predecessor in 2014 for use in acupuncture. 

CLINICAL CONNECTED WEARABLE PATCHES TO TAKE OFF: Shipments of connected wearable patches will grow rapidly in the coming years, topping 35 million annual units by 2022, according to a new report from Tractica. The growth of this wearable category will be driven primarily by clinical applications, making up 80% of total wearable shipments. Connected wearable patches feature wireless connectivity that allows a sensor to be affixed to a patient’s skin and record data for a period of days or weeks before they’re removed. These types of devices allow real-time data collection to let patients and physicians track medical conditions. For example. Abilify’s MyCite, the first FDA-approved “digital pill,” pairs a sensor-equipped pill with an external patch that collects data from the pill in order to help doctors monitor medication adherence. The market for these types of devices is set to generate $7.9 billion by 2022. BI Intelligence

AUSTRALIAN PATIENT RECRUITMENT APP WINS $25K: HealthMatch, an Australian startup that makes clinical trials more accessible to patients, received the first prize of $25,000 at TechCrunch Battlefield Australia on Thursday. In Australia, thousands of clinical trials are conducted each year. Recruiting for trials is a difficult process for drug and treatment trials sponsors, who will often turn to costly contract recruitment organizations (CRO) to find patients. For context, in the US, patient recruitment is the largest chunk of the $2.6 billion it costs to bring a new drug to market. At the same time, for patients, finding the appropriate study can be tedious and time-consuming. The HealthMatch mobile app, which is connected to the Australian government database of clinical trials, uses machine learning (ML) to match patients with eligible trials, simultaneously broadening the reach and recruitment of these trials, while cutting down on the resources it takes to find them. A further benefit is that clinical trials will likely see a larger pool of patients to select from — that could improve the accuracy and rate of completion of the trials. The service is free for patients and charges trial sponsors on a per-client basis or on an annual license.
