Been reading a lot of old Hellblazer lately, and I can't overstate how much Spurrier and Campbell GET it.
With John, there's always this sense of crushing self-aware regret. He attempts to position himself as better and beyond, a cunning man.
He's not.
Despite trying to claim otherwise, both on the micro of his personal life and the macro of the legacy of british colonialism, John's justification is always that of self-preservation above all else, and he's completely aware of it, and hates himself for it.
But he's a bastard. And a bastard can't change his stripes.

(Page 2: Sandman Universe: Hellblazer #12 (2020) w. Si Spurrier a: Aaron Campbell and Jordie Bellaire)
