Anime of RKDD was so great and I feel their respect for Original mangas and Amano Akira.

One of indicates of it is Opening. The manga is many pays homage to SHERLOCK HOMES. Following suit, the opening pays homage to many famous mystery works. So there are many scenes in opening we hadn't seen in manga.

This was a hot topic of discussion among viewers. There are some Japanese works, I try to compile it.

1 : The Inugami Curse (Series of Detective Kosuke Kindaichi) by Seishi Yokomizo

This is one of poplar mystery novel series in Japan. Especially "The Inugami Curse" is most famous one. It has been visualized many times.

There is a women in left side of picture and her body like wrapped in brown flowers. There is a same body on the other side, but there are no heads there. One of the most striking scenes in this work which the head of the corpse is placed on top of flower doll. This work has the eeriness of a horror so I don't use picture of this scene here. If you have interest, please Google this "犬神家 花".

Or maybe you can feel somehow from this picture. It is one of the filming locations for this work.

2 : Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

It's a mystery work that is too well known. Murder in the train isn't happened on manga, well, at this time.

3 : Any Old Port in a Storm (Series of Columbo)

This picture by Colombo official Youtube (season3, episode2). It's very clear how faithfully it has been reproduced.

4 : The Case of the Murder on D by Edogawa Ranpo.

This is a mystery novel by one of Japan's leading writers. It's also the first work in which the famous Japanese detective Kogoro Akechi appears. On my research, it seems there isn't translation book to English. Nearly 100 years have passed since the publication of this work, so copyright has expired. Therefore, we can read it for free on a well-known in Japan and conscientious site. (It can also view other old works on this site, but all are in Japanese only.)

That's all! I think the anime is very wonderfully done. I can't wait to the 2nd season!

We invented The Alcatraz hotel for Blindspotting because … well, certain hotels didn’t want to give us permission make commentary on their elitism lol. But it led us to create a symbolic hotel that points to the absurdity of aspects of San Francisco and the Bay at large. Alcatraz prison is already a massive tourist attraction, so we doubled down on it and created a hotel that also pays homage to a historically troubling prison, which feels like something a big corporation would do to exploit the incoming tourists and businesspeople.

It’s always been so fascinating to me that a famous prison was a beautiful landmark for tourists, a place to cosplay the consequences of incarceration for an afternoon. One of our defining characteristics, riddled with a complicated history, floating in the middle of the bay. A fitting place for an entitled guest to think he could talk to Ashley like she comes with the room like property - a prisoner. And then the guests wife, who asks her for contraband. Fitting that then her incarcerated partner appears by her side in that place, both of them trapped in these places. #episode2

QUEER TV

Before I watched POSE, I thought it might be a fashion show about how models express themselves. POSE is a queer television related to fashion but not as similar as what we saw in a commonplace. It is not about a great fashion design with a famous luxury designer, the roles in POSE are all designers to themselves because they designed and made the costumes. 

The first queer media I watched was called Brokeback Mountain, which did not leave me with a deep impression but misconception of gay people that I do not understand why the two leading male characters fell in love but marry with other women. I have never considered what kind of humiliation or discrimination they would meet if they came out. I was ignorant before I reached out to POSE, a television that focuses on minority people within the marginalized group. It is a television that no longer focuses on white gay people but on black trans people. This brought out the breakout text in both queer media and the natural world since the world is still arguing about the problems of trans people, such as whether trans people should use the women's restroom. 

According to what we have learned before, the LGBT group is a marginalized group because the whole world system is still or mainly focuses on heteronormativity. To love or have a relationship with the same sex people is violated the binary rule, human morals, and reproductive futurism. And it is perceived as demonic behavior by Catholicism. 

POSE is the first queer TV that changed my perspectives on gay people. Although this TV has been controversial, it uses three seasons to sketch the queer history in New York City, starting from 1980 entirely. For me, POSE is not just a queer TV but a 'documentary' TV because the play is in chronological order, which shows the historical moments from queer history. Moreover, according to Joyrich(2014), TV is still at the top of mainstream US media institutions, and it has a function of influencing people's perceptions by bringing out intensely political history. TV is a thing that is ordinary, mundane, and unremarkable or a concept that illustrates a fixed type of framing in media. Queer is unusual in adjective and ruins things in verb meaning. Queer TV can be seen as a "breakout text" (Cavalcante, 2017, p.1) that appeared in ordinary television. This breakout is like a sudden rise of layer after layer of huge waves across the calm sea. Therefore, POSE is also a cultural breakout text to me.

"Queer is defined precisely as the subversion of the ordinary" (Joyrich,2014,p.134). Queer TV studies focus on how queer TV reflects, refracts, and generates the dominant ideology, firmly challenging and troubling the normative ideology, thus providing a powerful venue for cultural and political resistance. According to Tongson(2017), queer media has its function of examining queer history by portraying LGBTQ civil rights events. Each era's cultural, political, and LGBT activities affect queer media creations. Queer media from various eras mirrored queer society. Queer media helps people understand the challenges and limits queer people faced before. The content of how trans people defend against HIV disease and why they get infected in this TV series brought me a type of cultural shock corresponding to the breakout text function. In season2, episode2, they went to the church and started their protest to ask, "stop killing us." The director uses a close-up shot to show the cardinal's crime through the leaflet. As we can see from the picture, it pointed out what the cardinal did at that time. 

The scenes played in the show used a narrative way to show how ACT UP and our main characters participated in the protest, which is similar to what happened in the actual ACT UP protest during that time. I appreciate the documentary film United in Anger which precisely explained this scene because I did not understand why they started the protest in the church when I watched the scene. But after we read and learned from our class, I re-watch the TV and finally connected some confusing points to actual history.

Another scene in the POSE that left me with a profound impression is that they spread the ashes. This scene is based on the actual hisotry, which is also recorded in the United in Anger. After Pray dead, his friends united together and joined the activity made by ACT UP— spread the ashes onto the White House lawn. Ashes are meaningful and more direct in showing how many people died from AIDS. It was more efficient in getting people to become angry and remember how this disease took their friends, families, and people they knew. This scene revealed how people with AIDS or without AIDS were angry and disappointed when the government was not fully responding to act to these dead people.

Do you remember a scene where the presenter asked trans people horrible questions about their biological body system in the last documentary film called Disclosure? Have you ever thought about why those people ask these awful questions to trans people? This is also driven by Cavalcante, "particularly on television talk shows, transgender people are routinely asked to reveal intimate details about their bodies, questions other guest never receive" (Cavalcante, 2017, p.9).

POSE has reflected the similar problem of trans people in the show. It can be recognized as a combination of Cavalcante's idea of breakout texts and Joyrich's idea that queer created "a tension between the articulation of the mainstream and the unsettling of the mainstream, both framing and displacing a televisual logic as it attempts to take queer viewers, texts, and issues into account even as it aims to undermine TV's usual accounting" (Joyrich, 2014, p.133). The worry from trans people seldom or never appeared in a show but POSE pointed out. Like Cavalcante(2017) said, trans people are worried about how the screen showed trans people, and "the movie may have made people think you have to have the surgery" (Cavalcante, 2017, p.9). In the first season, episode 4, Elektra clarified the idea of why she wants to do the transsexualism operation, it is not to be a complete woman, but it is because of inconvenience. Many media coverages mislead us to believe that trans people will only be complete after they do the surge, but did the media reveal the truth about the inconvenience? I am glad to see queer TV like POSE pointed out the fact and eliminated the misconception of transsexualism operation. 

I believe POSE also indirectly explained why some people ask horrible questions to trans people. In season1, episode 7, Elektra's lover found she had done the surgery and became very angry. The words he uses: selfishness and stupidity, illustrate that he defined or identified Elektra as a toy to satisfy his perverted curiosity. This can be seen as how he identifies other trans people. In another scene in season2, episode1, Angel suffered dehumanization behavior by being photographed naked photos from the photographer. In their dialogue, he used the personal collection to highlight his wrong intention that he considers Angel a rare collection, not a human. He made her take off her clothes and underwear in an icy and commanding tone, and here's a detail of when he saw Angel take off her underwear that he swallowed. I think the director wanted to use this performance technique to express the ecstasy that he couldn't help but to imply his indifference and curiosity. The photographer, Elektra's lover in the play, identified some people's minds--to the hate, curiosity, shame, and indifference of crowds. 

All these scenes I showed above correspond to Joyrich's idea that queer TV created tension between ordinary television and queer TV(Joyrich, 2014). It focuses on the intersectional people at the edge of the marginalized LGBT people. It shows the function that broke up into the mainstream and made the marginalized group visible by revealing the issue of trans people of color.

Joyrich(2014) also mentioned that reproductive futurism rests on children all hope for the future. It believes that the primary motive for political science exists is to create a better future for the next generation. The fact that we don't know what will happen in the future also limits the idea of futurism. It is based on what people think or imagine about the present. But the idea that people must have children to ensure a future is common and expected(Harada, 2017). 

The ordinary TV follows the reproductive futurism pattern by creating thousands and thousands of similar televisions to meet the mass media's trend. Those televisions are TV's offspring which provide possibilities for future expectations.

I think this is why POSE only has three seasons because if it continues to self-reproduction, it may lose its initial goal to break up the normal TV interpretations of trans people. A meaningful queer TV might become an ordinary boring family drama, such as The Vampire Dairies, a fiction TV about vampires, werewolves, witches, and humans but focuses on heterosexuality across species. They are all busy dealing with their love and hate disputes. I think POSE also covers some repeated content implying the constant reproduction, but POSE retains its queerness since it only has three seasons.

Arcane character parallels / Vi & Viktor / Systemic disempowerment & self-reliance

So last parallel characters - Vi and Viktor. And lets start with setup of what kind of perspective Vi and Viktor have inherited from their upbringing in context of being from the undercity in the city of Piltover - it's easier since these scenes come one after another within the episode2:

So well, fun thing to have ingrained somewhere in your subconscious for no other reason than being born in a poorer part of the city. Remember:

"Piltover the land of progress, equality, innovation."

And then, at least for now pivotal for first season, pairings happen, these two are paired with a person from Piltover that treats and sees them as equal.

It all works great until it doesn't, not because the Piltover person - Jayce or Caitlyn change how they view them but because this doesn't change how people from Piltover view them.

This is how Caitlyn views Vi showing her undercity, as something that changed her view of the world:

And this is how the system they live in treats Vi showing Caitlyn 'the real world':

There's more to this scene because Vi wants to go after Silco, she's angry Powder is not the same as she was 'x' years ago. But the core of sentiment stands. They are not equal in eyes of anyone but themselves.

Jayce and Viktor's partnership has more ups and downs but that's mostly couched in Jayce actually not remembering Viktor is from the undercity. I mean he was very surprised during that bridge blocked to meet him there. Makes sense since they meet in Piltover.

Anyway, while this tension coming from systemic inequality is never much felt when these two character duos are the only ones in a scene happening in Piltover, it's nearly always there when other characters or system is involved.

But the funnier parallel is that both Vi and Viktor are much more independent on pursuing their own goals when left alone. Vi just leaves Caitlyn after the council scene to pursue own way to punch Silco to make herself feel better. Viktor when left alone, is more introverted in that regard, just doing some science work in their lab. But imo Viktor always operates under the assumption that he's only hazard to himself anyway.

Anyway these two are very self-reliant in achieving own goals, no one to accompany them - they'll do it themselves anyway. Does the story play a bit with self destructive nature of this ingrained 'you can only count on yourself' attitude - yes, it does. Is it healthy?

And the result:

I mean "dad" told me that punching and fists won't solve my problems, but here I am after winning another fight?

I don't want to say for these two the default to self-reliance is shown as destructive spiral but boy does it not look healthy. Especially for Vi, who temporarily looses the sight of her goal to reunite with her sister because of how powerless she feels. Or the system made her feel. Viktor is more of slow descent into the same place.

I mean Vi would have been killed by Sevika in last fight if not-brother of her not-girlfriend didn't think to upgrade the gautlets to fail safe for miners in case rocks fall.

I also think at this point the dice has been cast that these two will need to switch sides of residence from Zaun to Piltover and vice-versa: Vi has shown herself raiding Zaun with enforcers and Piltover's no.1 most unpopular president against chembarons. And Viktor has body parts that are made of shimmer and magic, which is against Piltover's ethos of Progress.

Season 5... You have to watch it. You have to. Possibly I liked it more than season 4. I just finished and I'm crying. 😭💖 Poetic vibe is strong in this one. Skam France will be the death of me, and I can't thank you enough for pushing me in this direction. Heck, once I watch season 6 I might even go back and watch 1&2. It makes me so weak.

Thoughts and speculation

The good:

1. Episodes 1 and 2 have given us the Sansa we deserve. Sansa is not only a competent leader she’s a believable leader. Sansa is leading for the right reasons and she is one of the more solid characters of the season so far. I’m wondering where she is going to be during the fighting and what she is going to be doing (I’m hoping to see her out her sewing skills to task in an infirmary). I feel like she’s playing a dangerous game with DT but is ultimately the only one playing a long game and fighting for Northern independence. I love how we’ve seen her vulnerable side with Jon and Theon as well as how strong she has been with facing past faces and DT. Here’s to the season of Sansa.

2. The build up to the battle has been well paced. The secondary characters helped with the build up in episode 2 and it’s made me worry for most of them. How they all spent their last night was telling and it was good to have an episode on these characters rather than the usual suspects. Winterfell has been a great location and I’ve not missed visiting loads of different places in one episode. I also have enjoyed the political talk and conversations between characters. No one is expecting to survive so it’s going to be interesting to see power struggles once we know who is going to live.

3. Jonsa. Their scenes have been minimal but telling. Even when they’ve not been in scenes together there is an undercurrent there. Jon’s reunion with Aryawas about Sansa. Sansa and DT meeting was about Jon. I do think they have left so much between them unfinished intentionally. I can’t believe we’re not going to get a parentage reveal between Sansa and Jon so it makes me think there’s still loads to come. I always expect more Han we get with Jonsa but I can’t help to read into their interactions.

4. Samwell Tarly and Bran Stark... enough said.

5. Jaime and Brienne did not disappoint me and I don’t want either of them to die even though it’s probably inevitable that we’ll loose at least one of them.

6. Daenerys Targaryen has not irritated me as much as usual. I love that they’re not shying away from dark!Dany and that we’re not seeing people fawn over her. I hope we get even darker!Dany.

7. I’ve liked that we’ve seen a different side of Arya and I love that we got most of her scenes with the Hound and Gendry.

8. The humour of this season has been great. I forget how funny this show can been sometimes and I think it’s helped with some of the scenes with lots of characters to bring in a bit of humour otherwise what a depressing season this could be.

The meh

1. The pacing of the two episodes has annoyed me. I feel like we should have seen a lot more reactions to big major reveals that have happened and instead a lot has been glossed over. I am hoping trusting that it’s intentional and we should be focused on the big battle which we means we see reactions after or during the battle instead. The lack of on screen reaction to seeing Jon ride a dragon, Jon’s parentage reveal, Cersei not sending her army and procuring a new army has to be intentional... right???

2. JonxDany... their chemistry is better this season but it’s still coming across as forced and one sided. It might be my jonsa shipper goggles and wish for political!jon but I’ve found their scenes quite awkward (cheesy dragon flight scene) or stilted (out in the field whilst being observed by Tyrion et al). I’m hoping for a big reaction when there’s time to react to the parentage reveal and I hope it’s big enough to put an end to their romantic relationship and we don’t get a cerseixjaime situation. I want Jon back (and 5sre was glimmers of him I’m episode2).

3. The Greyjoy’s. Theon’s reunion with Sansa was cute and reminded me of why I liked their scenes in season 5. They’ve both come so far. Yara must be coming back at some point (otherwise why keep her alive) and Euron is just creepy. Again I feel like they’re setting up the Greyjoy’s for a big part but can’t help feel that it’s ogling nowhere and Theon will be dead by the end of the next episode.

4. Ghost... that was all we got! I had to sit through the peeping dragon scene for a 30 second background flash of Ghost...ffs

5. The lack of Stark scenes is frustrating. They could have added 5 minutes to either episode for all four Starks to be seen together having a brief conversation or just sitting in silence. All I needed was a few minutes to see them all reconnecting. There has been no stark-sister scenes, no parentage reveal, no explanation of weird Bran for Jon, no more Jon/Arya catch ups... are we expected to accept that it all happened off screen?

6. Jonsa. Hear me out, I have faith, I can see Jonsa being the end goal but they’re coming at Jonsa from a different place this season. Sansa’s vulnerability and Jon’s defensiveness is driving their interactions and I love it but I want more scenes. I need to know that they’re on the same page and are working together. I can see more of a political union happening between them which would feel right for how this season has played out so far but there’s not enough scenes between them at the moment. I can’t believe we didn’t get a parentage reveal in episode 2 and I really hope it hasn’t happened off screen.

7. Jon. I need to believe political!Jon is in force or at least appearing because he was so ooc from most of the first episode. However I loved his reunion with Tormund and the Night watch in the second episode and his reaction to the parentage reveal was great. I just don’t want him to be so consumed by the DT relationship that his other relationships to suffer.

8. Why has no one discussed some of the big events of season 7? Why has no one asked where Littlefinger is or comment on the fact that Jon was a prisoner for most of season 7. We got a reference to the behind the wall trek from Gendry but not in much detail. It just feels like they’re rushing through the set up to get to the big fight.

Speculation

I’m thinking the fight against the dead is going to last well into episode 4 before Cersei becomes the focus. I’m here for dark!dany and can only hope the parentage reveal is going to cause huge problems. I’m also really excited for the next episode, it’s going to be carnage.

I think this season is good. I feel like the first two episodes have been set up. The first episode for the main characters and the second episode for everyone else and it can only mean we’re going to lose a lot of poeple and it’s going to be epic but there is a lot of unfinished business that needs to get wrapped up.

Maximilian - Das Spiel von Macht und Liebe is a three part mini-series co-produced by the Austrian ORF and the German ZDF. Starz bought the rights to air it in the US in 2018 but has not done so so far.

There is apparently an official translation by amazon and itunes but I cannot comment on the quality of it. I noticed that just because a big streaming service offers them they are not always good (looking at you Netflix with Magnificent Century Season 1). I also do not know in which countries the series is even available. Someone else has also uploaded subtitles to opensubtitles. I also cannot comment on how well they are made. If you are impatient and need to know how the story continues immediately it might be an alternative, but you will need to provide your own footage of the series as far as I’m aware. I checked them and those are not English subtitles but German ones. While not helpful for most for you, they are for me whenever I get stuck not understanding what someone is saying and checking whether I heard something right or wrong. So thanks to @sabrinabirds for telling me about the site and by this indirectly contributing to an even better quality translation :) @everythingieverloved just told me that Starz will air the series this month and has already put it up onto their website. So if you are from the US and/or have (somehow) access to their service you can also watch the series there. I also cannot comment on their subtitles but if anyone knows how well made their are, please let me know. For the rest of you, who unfortunately are not from the US, have no access to starz, amazon or itunes and don’t speak German, do not panic! I will continue my translation (and annotations) for you.

You might like the series if you are interested in young, strong female rulers in their own right that have to defend their throne. The series also heavily features Margaret of York with whom fans of The White Princess should be familiar with. Maximilian is set before and a little time during The White Princess’ events. You might also want to watch the series if you liked Kerstin Gier’s Ruby Red Trilogy and its movie adaptation because Gideon de Villes and Maximilian of Austria are both played by German actor Jannis Niewöhner.
