GO FISHBOY

GO FISHBOY is a 2D animated short film by directors Denise Cirone, Sebastian Doringer, Andrey Kolesov, Chiayu Liu, Zhen Tian, and Lan Zhou, for their 2022 final project at Globelins School in Paris.

Taking place in Japan, the film follows a respected sushi-maker Takeshi Asami and his son Uotaro as they go about their daily lives. As Takeshi tries to connect with his son through their family business of sushi making things become tense as Takeshi begins to notice a strange change in his silent son's behavior.
My Thoughts:
!!!SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
I really like this film! It takes you through an interesting series of events that start out as slightly odd and slowly morph into something more complex. The obvious theming behind GO FISHBOY is family, personal identity and acceptance. With Uotaro clearly coming to terms with his own identity (as a fish) and leaving Takeshi to process what exactly that means for him and his son. At first he is in denial about the fishy behavior and wants to ignore the signs. Continually dragging Uotaro away from the fish stalls, distracting him when he is more interested in the fish than making sushi, choosing to ignore how his son flopped around almost naked in the rain, and deflecting the idea when his son straight up tells him he wants to be a fish are all examples of this. But after Uotaro's confession there is a clear shift in Takeshi (he hesitates when cutting up a tuna fish to serve); though that denial is not completely gone as he rips the fish charm off his cars rearview mirror before going to the fish market with Uotaro.
The fish market is a big scene and acts as our films climax. At some point Takeshi loses Uotaro in the crowd, and unlike the first time we saw this happen the sushi-maker grows panicked almost immediately. We can assume that Takeshi is aware of what is about to happen next, as Uotaro's behavior has been steadily escalating up until this point. He runs throughout the fish market shouting his son's name, this scene showing the most movement in the entire film. When he sees his son on the dock he runs towards him crying and telling him to stop, shouting his name. Uotaro doesn't listen and takes the plunge, diving in against his fathers instructions. But at this point we know he wouldn't have anyways. The viewer is then greeted by this beautiful underwater sequence, and despite Takeshi exclaiming earlier that Uotaro cant swim, he does so anyways. becoming a fish swimming among many others. The sushi-maker makes it to the dock, now too late, and cries. But there's that air of acceptance given at the end, when we see him smile through his tears. A heartwarming ending to a beautiful film.
I think a lot of people will relate to this film because of the themes it portrays. Not to mention the animation style is simple, smooth and unique all the same, with the wavy lines being something I've never seen before! The colour palette is perfect for the tone of the film and perfectly captures the mood of every moment! Just take a look at this artwork!!!

Git Balıkoğlan (İng. Go Fishboy); Denise Cirone, Sebastian Doringer, Andrey Kolesov'un yönettiği kısa animasyon film.

Short Films Evaluation MAF
Short Films 1
The Passer by – Pieter Coudyzer
Pieter’s style is unique to him and I have not seen anything like it before. This film had a very sad story line and was a bit chaotic with all the elements as he was cycling down the road, which builds up the suspense to his collision with a car. I found it difficult to concentrate, which may have been intended by the director, however, I did see the clear story-line. I liked that the camera would just follow the bikes from a side angle and track them as they went up and down the streets showing what was going on in the background, if there were loads of different perspectives and angles the story-line may have been lost.
Short Films 2
Altötting – Andreas Hydkade
I really liked the silhouette style of this film and its simplicity; it is very visually pleasing and has you constantly engaged. The story-line is very sweet even though it is about death. The characters are very basic, but their movements help to tell the story not their facial expressions. The colour scheme is very dull and there is little detail in the environment and characters apart from when the mother Tereasa was in shot, everything would come to life.
Short Films Panorama
Change Return – Robert Findlay
The concept of this film was very futuristic and unique, the story-line is tragic and makes you feel differently towards characters from start to finish in the space of 5 minutes. The illustrations are detailed perfectly so that we can know what each object is without over crowding the shot. My favourite part of the film was the artistic style and the imaginative ideas.
Short Films for Children
Sea Major – Elisha Wang
The quality of this film was amazing and something you would expect to see on a children’s channel. The character design was very simple but playful and showed great emotion by just moving the eyebrows of eyes slightly. The story-line is very sweet and intriguing.
Student Films
The Song of a Lost Boy – Daniel Quirke
The angles and different perspectives used kept me intrigued. The character designs are unique and slightly odd and each one had a different personality. The set design made is very detailed and help to make the film more realistic and added depth to certain scenes. This was one of my favourites out of the shorts as it had a lot of atmosphere and contrasting shots. The ending with everyone together is a nice round up and the music makes you happy.
Student Films Panorama
One Left – Sebastian Doringer
This film was very comedic as it went on and showed a variety of personalities and how people react to certain things to make them relatable. The ending was a good twist too I did not expect it at all. The artistic style is very simple but effective. The different shots help to build suspense along with the atmosphere in the reception.
Commissioned Films
The Rest of My Days – Jack Antoine Charlot
This film was another one of my favourites, the idea is very effective and has the audience entranced in this man dancing. The man looks so realistic, but he is clearing animated due to his shining skin. Most of it is the camera following around the man dancing and then there are parts where the background change and interact with the music to help us be engaged to the screen.
