The fashion industry is among the top polluters globally. Every year, over 100 billion garments are produced, and the average American discards 82 pounds of textile waste annually. Behind every cheap, trendy item lies a heavy environmental toll — from the carbon emissions of global transport to the microplastics released by synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon, which pollute our oceans and harm marine life.

Moreover, textile dyeing is a major source of water pollution, and many fast fashion brands rely on exploitative labor practices, with workers toiling in unsafe conditions for unfair wages. When we support this model, we’re not just hurting the environment — we’re contributing to human suffering.

How to Build a Sustainable Wardrobe

The good news? We have the power to shift the narrative. Here's how you can start building a wardrobe that reflects your values and respects the planet:

1. Choose Sustainable Materials

Opt for fabrics like organic cotton, recycled polyester, Tencel, linen, and hemp. These materials require less water and energy and are often produced using safer, non-toxic methods.

2. Buy Second-Hand

Thrift shopping is not only cost-effective but also a great way to extend the life cycle of clothing. Apps like Depop, Poshmark, and local consignment stores make it easier than ever to shop preloved fashion.

3. Invest in Quality

Fast fashion encourages quantity over quality. Instead, focus on timeless, well-made pieces that you’ll wear again and again. Follow the 30-wear rule — ask yourself: Will I wear this at least 30 times? If not, it may not be worth the purchase.

My Personal Journey to Conscious Style

A few years ago, I began to take a hard look at my wardrobe and realized how much harm my fashion choices were causing. I started shopping second-hand, choosing sustainable brands, and prioritizing quality over quantity. The transformation has been incredible — not only have I reduced my fashion waste, but I’ve also cultivated a wardrobe that feels more me.

Surprisingly, I’ve saved money in the process, too. Buying fewer, better pieces means I shop less often, and I truly love everything I own.

28-08-20: enchanting room décor 

Its official – I’ve found my new favourite charity shop. I’ve actually been to this Barnardo’s store before but never spent enough time in there to realise how amazing it is. The main selling point is the fact that it’s a donation centre so they’re always getting new things and it’s extra cheap. I spent £5 (!) on eight different knick-knacks that are probably my favourite home décor pieces I’ve ever thrifted – and some of them you could probably find for ten times the price in Anthropologie! 

 I love how all of the pieces aesthetically match with each other – I’ve already got visions of how I’m going to style them in my new flat. I’ve started to collect a few pieces together that I already owned and that I knew I wanted to take with me to the flat, but I really wanted to get my hands on a glass tray that I could display my perfumes on. Barnardo’s pulled it out the bag with these two gorgeous vintage glass trays. I definitely didn’t need both – but because they were only £1 each I couldn’t resist. 

This kind of eclectic decoration style definitely isn’t for everyone buttttt, if it is for you then I highly recommend ditching the high street and favouring the charity shops for your home décor. 

Not only will you end up with a decorated space that’s says much more about you and your personality, but you also get the satisfaction that you’re helping worthy causes and doing your bit to shop sustainably. I’m going to make it my mission to scout out more local donation centre charity shops in my area as clearly they’re treasure troves.

Is it just me or is there something so much more special in second hand books? I was passing by this shop yesterday, and just fell in love with it. They’re called Black Hole, they’re very old school, and buy/sell records, tapes, books, etc. which is amazing in my opinion, and I wish there were more places like this to keep it alive. Second hand bookshops have always been my favorite place to find a new read. They usually have unique choices, first and limited editions that you can’t find anywhere else. There isn’t much that tops that feeling, of walking through rows of books that all have a great story to tell. And I mean that way beyond just the literal sense. • One of my favorite second hand stores is @rebooks_israel a social second-hand bookstore that works with people with psychiatric disabilities. Today, as few as 5000 blue whales still roam the ocean, with populations increasing by only small numbers since they don’t reproduce very quickly.

And that’s just one of many whale species that are struggling to survive in the oceans we’ve altered. They need all the help they can get, and it’s important to do what we can to protect them and their habitat, so that oceans full of whales are not only part of this planet’s past, but also its future.
