I investigated Song Dong’s project “Wastenot” a collection of Empty bottles, toothpaste tubes, plastic bottles, bowels, clothing items and mountains of boxes. All these items came from the home of his mother and reflected her life in China during the cultural revolution. It was a commentary on the bonds between family members, and the power of objects to tell stories and shape our lives. I think that this is a very good secondary resource as it shows that objects can help us understand the people around us better and reflect on the lives of those closest to us. 

Song Dong’s mother saved all these things as a preservation of herself during a time of social and political turmoil. By holding onto all these things, by holding into these small parts of herself, Song Dong’s mother didn’t have to lose touch with herself, and now can be used by the artist to celebrate the life of the mother in a time of grief.

I’ve met a lot of interesting and supportive people since starting my journey into taxidermy. Here’s a brand new donation from my friend’s daughter’s fiance, four huge buck legs!! They were so excited to be able to pass these on to me, both to support my craft and to “use every part” from the hunt. You know those two lemons that ripened on my house plant lemon tree? The ones I posted about a while back? I used the juice to make ice cream, which was incredibly delicious (more about that another time). I candied the peel. Some we ate plain. Some I dipped in chocolate and we ate those too! Ok, so there was left over boards...which meant I had to make something for the garage. Made a low profile style race ramps that are lightweight. And long enough to raise the front end of the Datsun, Infiniti and Mazda up high enough to get a jack under it properly. No #bluesdaytuesday today! I tried, got really frustrated and ended up making lentil soup instead. My wife found this recipe a while back and I love it. It’s good for you, easy to make, and tastes great. It’s red lentils with sautéed onion, carrots and celery. I didn’t have any celery, so I used some of my New Years kraut- dicing up the cabbage similar to celery size. This recipe also calls for 4 cups broth or water; I used 3 cups water, 1 cup kraut brine. I know this is also totally mundane, but it’s exciting for me because I’ve read a lot about using vegetable ferments in soups in the writings of @sandorkraut -on top of that, this recipe cost very little to make.
