MIRACULOUS UPDATES

According to Miraculous France, RTS won’t be broadcasting new episodes for the next two weeks in order to release the episodes in order (which is extremely important this season). RTS later confirmed that they wanted to release the episodes in order to keep the plot intact. The next episode being broadcasted on TFOU will be “Gang of Secrets” which will be broadcasted on April 25th; they will also release an episode on May 9th but we still don’t know the title of the episode so it can be either episode four or “Queen Banana”/”Guilt trip” (hopefully it’s episode four). Gloob recently broadcasted “Lies” and the next episode to be broadcasted will be “Gang of Secrets”, they also still need to air the Shangai Special.

Translation: The RTS 1 channel will not be broadcasting new episodes of season four for the next upcoming two weeks.

Translation: It’s not their fault, they want to follow the production order (which seems important this season) and episode four is currently still in production!

  After something like three hundred and eighty-four years, we finally get the Jem Carstairs content we desperately needed since the end of TID. Because a life without Brother Snack-ariah is no life at all, am I right?

The book consists of ten short stories and follows the adventures of Brother Zackariah, our beloved Jem, searching through the shadow market in order to find some information about the Lost Herondale.

Set in 1901, the first two stories (“Cast Long Shadows”, and “Every Exquisite Thing”) are an introduction of the upcoming The Last Hours trilogy, whose first book (Chain of Gold) is coming out on March 2020.

Just eight more months until its release. We can do it, guys. It’s not like we are doing our waiting… Twelve years of it… In Azkaban. By comparison, March 2020… that’s like tomorrow.

Anyway, the co-protagonist of Cast Long Shadows is Matthew Fairchild, Charlotte and Henry’s second born. Matthew’s interests include his parabatai James, fashion, Oscar Wilde quotes, and being adorable 24/7.

The faerie woman looked almost sad. “You come of a brutal people, sweet child.”

“Not me,” said Matthew. “I believe in art and beauty.”

“You might be pitiless one day, for all that.”

“No, never” Matthew insisted. “I don’t care for the Shadowhunter customs at all. I like Downworlder ways much more.”

It’s been a few years since our Scooby gang was expelled from the Shadowhunters Academy, and now Matthew and James are parabatai. I’ve always loved their relationship, especially at the beginning when they were still rivals, and I can’t wait to read more about them.

“Bless you, my Herondales,” said Matthew grandly, scrambling up from the floor and making Lucie his bow. “I come upon an urgent errand. Tell me – be honest! – what do you think of my waistcoat?”

Lucie dimpled. “Devastating.”

“What Lucie said,” James agreed peacefully.

“Not fantastic?” Matthew asked. “Not positively stunning?”

“I suppose I am stunned,” said James. “But am I positively stunned?”

 The Last Hours is going to shatter our hearts. I already know it. You already know it. Everybody already knows it. Which is why I keep asking myself, why am I still reading Cassandra’s books even though each time they seem to inexorably destroy what is left of my soul? Give me a call when you find out the answer.

All right, I never thought The Last Hours was going to be sugar, spice and everything nice, but this is way too much. How am I supposed to live knowing that Matthew is hurting and that there is nothing I can do about it?

I hated reading this novel. I really did hate it. Because Matthew is young and naïve and innocent and so unselfish and sensitive, and yet he was exploited and manipulated by a psycho Downworlder who wanted to hurt the Shadowhunters. His only fault was giving too much credit to the insecurity that he always tried to hide behind an overconfident façade, and this endangered his mother and killed his unborn sister.

Instead of telling the truth, he decides to keep it a secret from everyone, even from his parabatai, since he feels so ashamed of himself and thinks that there cannot be forgiveness for what he has done. So from now on, something in Matthew changes, and he will never be the same.

In the second novella, Every Exquisite Thing, the co-protagonist is Anna, Cecily and Gabriel Lightwoorm’s eldest daughter. Chapeau to the artist for making such a beautiful drawing of her! She’s perfect... and she also looks like Ruby Rose, doesn’t she?

We stan a queen.

Beside stealing her brother’s clothes, she enjoys getting weird (see: voluptuous) glances from other women while walking down the streets. I mean, even Brother Six-pack-ariah states that she looks a lot like her uncle Will, which is something that could give her the power to turn freaking rocks on.

Although Anna was definitely born in the wrong period, she’s still lucky enough to have a supportive family that loves her no matter what.

Anna thought of all the pain of the day again – the wound that had ripped her chest open and exposed her heart. But now it was as if her mother had drawn a rune over it and closed it. The scar was there, but she was whole.

It was like being Marked all over again, defining who she was. This was Anna Lightwood.

When I read this novella for the first time, I was on a plane, so I was like Elsa from Frozen. Conceal, don’t feeeel, don’t let them knowwwwww.

Little did I know that something even more heart-breaking was coming... and it answers to the name of Learn about Loss. Which was the moment when the Elsa in me was like well, now they knooowwwwww.

Let it gooooo, let it goooooo.

Can’t hold it back anymooooooreeeee.

In Learn about loss, we follow Brother Mlml-ariah back to the United States, where he and Sister Emilia (a James Carstairs stan) are investigating some weird activities regarding adamas. They end up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where a Mysterious Merchants’ Bazar is promising the inhabitants of the city whatever they most desire.

We all know that in the shadow world there is no such thing as coincidences, so the one who is stealing the adamas is the one behind this market... and he is also of the Greater Demons, Belial, who happens to know something important about the Lost Herondale.

“I might know a cure,” Belial said. “Yes, I think I know a sure cure. You could be who you once were. You could be Jem again. Or.”

Brother Zachariah said, Or?

Belial’s long tongue flickered out, as if he was tasting the air and found it delicious. “Or I could tell you a thing you don’t know. There are Herondales, not the ones you know, but of the same blood as your parabatai.”

It could be a great dilemma. Getting rid of a curse that ended your life and becoming a Shadowhunters again – or remaining a Silent Brother just to help out the two people you love the most? But what could be a great dilemma to most... means nothing to Brother Zachariah, who, even as a Silent Brother, is devoted to his loved ones more than ever.

The Carstairs owe a life debt to the Herondales.

which is a deeper and stronger way to say «I love you».

At the end of the novella, Sister Emilia makes a deal with Belial, who promises her to give Brother Zachariah some extra time with his dying parabatai in form of a vision.

In the vision, Will and Jem are young again, and it’s the period before their parabatai ceremony. They find themselves in Shangai, which is the place where Jem was born... a place they never got to visit. For once in a long time, even though for a short moment, Jem is himself again and gets to be with his other half before Will passes away.

I love the way Cassandra Clare describes the bond between parabatai. It is so intimate yet it makes you feel part of something bigger just by reading about it.

There was a lightness in Jem’s chest that he realized, finally, was joy. He saw that joy mirrored in his parabatai’s face. The face of the one you love is the best mirror of all. It shows you your own happines and your own pain and it helps you bear both, because to bear alone is to be overwhelmed by the flood.

We had been waiting for this moment since The infernal devices... and it’s more than perfect.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that we could never thank Cassandra enough for this reunion. Unless she decided to write a new series about them...

El papel de las mujeres en los k-drama

¿Realmente empoderadas o sólo replicantes de la estructura?

Mujeres dueñas de sus destinos, con la vista fija en el objetivo y determinadas a lograr sus metas... hasta que llega un chaebol a enamorarlas.

Como mexicana, estoy acostumbrada a ver a mujeres protagonistas que, por una extraña razón, siempre tienen que lidiar con las fuerzas oscuras del universo (o su principal enemiga) que impiden que pueda obtener un final feliz.

El discurso del “amor -sentimental, laboral, familiar- todo lo puede”  ha sido altamente explotado por todos los medios de comunicación (no sólo mexicanos, sino en un plano occidental) que una persona llega a creerla por completo.

Es por eso que mi primer encuentro con los k-dramas fue una bocanada de aire fresco a los constantes mensajes de motivación; me encontré con mujeres independientes económicamente, “indomables” y que, curiosamente, toda su historia gira en torno a causa-efecto de sus decisiones (con sus excepciones, claro está).

Por esta razón, pensé que las mujeres orientales tenían un mejor papel y no estaban bajo el yugo de una sociedad machista. Pero, conforme iba viendo más contenidos e iba relacionando patrones tóxicos en relación mujer-hombre, me di cuenta que aunque haya un personaje estelar femenino, toda la trama gira en torno al hombre que inevitablemente se reduce en dos tipos de k-dramas:

1. Historia de amor

2. Otra temática con una historia de amor

Historias de amor 

Todas las historias que son 100% románticas tienen un tinte tóxico. Y la trama se puede resumir así:

“Chica A es una determinada profesionista que busca salir adelante hasta que conoce a chaebol B, un hombre engreído que cambiará totalmente para ayudarla a lograr sus metas.”

En primer lugar, Chica A claramente no necesita la ayuda de chaebol B y se lo hace saber en cada oportunidad que tiene, pero chaebol B en su mismo egoísmo cree que nadie puede sobrevivir sin él y que es necesaria su ayuda. ¿Cómo ayuda? Simple, no ayudando en lo absoluto. Se convierte en un estorbo, su poder absorbe la fuente principal de ingresos de Chica A obligándola a depender de él. Aunque ella se resista, de repente chaebol B se torna en alguien súper romántico, lo cual en la vida real es muy difícil que un hombre ceda sus privilegios para dejar de ejercer poder sobre la mujer.

Ahora, en el desarrollo de la trama superior, aunque identifiques el patrón tóxico siempre hay una historia secundaria que justifica la razón de ser de este personaje: no recibió amor de pequeño, siempre tuvo que responder a altos estándares, entre otras que hacen que “sientas lástima por él”. 

Entonces, aunque vemos a un personaje femenino independiente es evidente que el machismo se ve en estas acciones, que forman parte de la vida diaria de las mujeres por cuestiones sociales y culturales. La mejor manera de que la sociedad patriarcal nos quierever triunfar es con un marido influyente por el cual no tendrás que preocuparte jamás de tus ingresos; porque aunque labores, él es tu fuente principal (ya que es tu jefe).

Ejemplos de estos dramas son “What’s wrong with secretary Kim?”, “Noble, My love”.

 Otra temática con una historia de amor

En estas historias, el personaje femenino tiene mayor peso y puede ser el eje de la trama, hasta que un hombre llega; convirtiéndose en una historia androcéntrica.

La resumiremos así:

“Protagonista tiene una misión para completar, conoce a chico B quien se suma a la causa”

A pesar de que la protagonista es la que lleva las riendas de la trama, el personaje masculino de alguna manera se las ingenia para convertirse en el eje. Y aunque la mujer no tenga un peso importante en la historia, debe simbolizar algo para que el hombre logre concluir la trama.

Lo ejemplificaré para que se entienda el punto.

1) Mr. Sunshine. 

A pesar de ser mi drama favorito, la historia es androcéntrica. Desde el primer capítulo sabemos que Ae-Shin simboliza la esperanza y la independencia de Corea del Sur. (La voz en off y en capítulos posteriores es la única con color una escena)

Su determinación por ser parte de la Armada de Honor y liberar a Corea de la inminente ocupación japonesa hace que tres hombres se enamoren de ella: de esta manera un coreano-estadounidense, un coreano-japonés y un coreano dejan a un lado sus diferencias con tal de ayudarla a lograrlo.

Pero el final de estos tres personajes es un ejemplo de sacrificio que los coreanos debieron realizar para salvar a su patria. 

2) Goblin

Es otro de mis dramas favoritos. Sabemos que Kim Shin debe encontrar el amor para poder liberarse del castigo divino que le fue impuesto. Ji Eun-Tak es su destino y la única que puede ayudarlo, pero al final, es él quien se lleva toda el drama, porque ella tan sólo es una herramienta para terminar con su sufrimiento. 

3) Secret Healer

Seo-Ri, al nacer, fue maldecida por la bruja de la reina para dar continuidad a la dinastía. En sí, su destino era morir al momento de nacer; sin embargo, fue salvada por otro brujo para romper con los poderes ocultos de la villana. Conforme va creciendo, Seo-Ri cumple una serie de retos que se ven interrumpidos por un ente extraño que quiere matarla y por su interés amoroso, quien decide tomar el protagonismo con tal de salvarla. Aunque la historia de amor no es tóxica, este hecho hizo que el machismo se colocara dentro de la misma. Después de ser “imposibilitada” en lograr sus metas, deciden convertirla en mártir y pues se rompe la estructura original para caer en lo común.

Como podemos ver, la mujer siempre queda oprimida dentro de una estructura machista, en la cual o debe depender enteramente de su interés amoroso o verse restringida en sus acciones que lograrán emanciparla.

Sin embargo, no todo está perdido, porque hay algunos kdramas (y mencionaré un drama taiwanense) que intentan romper la estructura.

1) Strong Woman Do Bong Soon.

Me encanta. Hay algunos detalles que me detienen a considerarla totalmente disruptiva, pero sí podría considerarse un feminismo 101. 

Bong Soon es una chica que proviene de una dinastía de mujeres fuertes (físicamente) que puede perder sus poderes si son utilizados en beneficio propio. Entonces, en primera instancia sabemos que ella tiene todo lo necesario para no dejarse sobajar (y no lo hace).

Una serie de hechos la llevan a enfretarse contra un grupo de gángsteres que vieron dañada su masculinidad y contra un hombre que considera a las mujeres un objeto que puede obtener a la mala. Así mismo, también “lucha” contra un hombre homosexual que no deja de ser misógino.

Bong-Soon es la prueba de que las mujeres pueden hacer el trabajo solas y que cuando llegan a necesitar ayuda, habla para obtenerla; porque no es la supremacía de un género sobre otro, sino el trabajo en conjunto para lograr una mejor sociedad.

2) The Greatest Marriage

Cha Ki-Young es una famosa presentadora que quiere formar una familia, pero no quiere casarse y para lograrlo decide ser madre soltera.

Desde el momento en que se embaraza se enfrenta a distintos obstáculos sociales: su co-presentador la chantajea por su situación “luchona”; su madre le propone abortar por la misma razón; y la familia del padre del bebé, por mantener la imagen, deciden echarle tierra.

Al momento de dar a luz, la personalidad de Cha Ki-Young cambia por completo; ahora es una madre que busca el bienestar de su hijo y lucha por mantenerlo a su lado. Y es en este momento, cuando la trama se complica aún más porque la familia paterna, ahora desea tener a su lado al nieto por ser niño y mantener los privilegios.

Un drama que critica a la cultura patriarcal desde el primer capítulo.

3) Life plan A and B (Taiwan)

Ru Wei debe decidir si mantener su relación o continuar con su carrera en Shangai; a partir de aquí la trama se divide en dos. Plan A: seguir con su vida profesional y crecer económicamente. Plan B: permanecer a lado de su novio y la familia de éste .

Y justamente en este drama se plantean distintos temas como la independencia económica, el aborto y la familia. En el Plan B, Ru Wei debe hacerse cargo de sus suegros, su marido y, después, de su hijo y su cuñada; como son su obligación, debe dejar el trabajo y sus sueños; sin embargo, no se ve frustrada por la decisión, ya que lo acepta con gusto.

En el Plan A, Ru Wei crece profesionalmente, se enamora de nuevo e incluso, como no está en sus planes ser madre, recurre al aborto para seguir con su vida.

El final fue realmente significativo, porque rompe con la temporalidad y el espacio y ambas Ru Wei se encuentran para hablar de lo que agradecen u odian de su situación, pero la conclusión es “no importa lo que hayamos elegido, ambas salimos ganando.”

Y es por esta frase, que considero totalmente disruptiva esta drama: la libertad de la mujer para elegir su estilo de vida, no importa si quiere tener una familia, quiere ser exitosa o ambas; es su decisión y está en su derecho de cumplirla sin obstáculos sociales.

Me encantan los dramas y me encantan sus personajes femeninos; sin embargo, como diría Tania Chan, es momento de que los guiniostas, productores y directores se planteen cambiar la forma de estos productos. Por que si no, seguirán replicando la estructura.
