So I started out painting a fawn rather loosely, and as I sculpted the negative shape the image of a baby fox kit appeared. We are working on value shifts with plane changes in Foundations of Watercolor and particularly working with cubes. This month we have all women in the class, so why not paint a favorite subject of most (if not all) women, a beautiful Tiffany blue gift box. Why, oh why, did I choose a gift box with a white ribbon??? In watercolor white is represented by the white of the paper, which is your lightest light. Everything else is painted darker and with other colors. So how do you paint a white ribbon with colors other than white and still have it read white?? Very carefully. First we choose subtle warm washes to depict white in warm light. Conversely we selected a variety of cool blues and violets to represent white in shadow. Then we darkened everything that was not white. I love the resulting painting. John Singer Sargent rose to fame for his finely rendered oil portraits. At his peak, he was one of the most sought after artists for portrait commissions. But, did you know he was also a remarkable watercolorist? Watercolors brought out a different side to Sargent's work. His meticulous oil portraits feature Notan… muted colors, dark and imposing backgrounds, bright lights, and all on finely rendered subjects. However, his watercolors are bright, colorful, loose and impressionist. I imagine that after slaving away over his portrait commissions for important (and probably also needy) people, some of the joy may have been taken out of painting for him. I also imagine his watercolor work probably felt more like a hobby…a refreshing break. JSS ended up creating more than 2,000 watercolors during his illustrious career. And I enjoy studying every one. We will be following the John Singer Sargent approach to watercolor in my upcoming workshop scheduled for November 6 at the Little House at Sunnybrook Farm near Columbia, TN.
