These are Iron Heart jeans. Supposedly well made denims. They aren’t Levi’s but essentially these jeans and a lot of Japanese selvedge denim brands directly copy vintage Levi’s and lift Levi’s jeans manufacturing techniques and equipment from the past.

Favorite jeans. It’s taken some time but now they’re broken in and comfortable. No fades of consequence yet. But do I keep wearing these 21 ounce denim monsters all summer?

Okay so obviously there's some stupidity baked into the notion that a whole people could be good at x, but in the same way that the Germans have been generally heralded for their engineering capabilities, I think one of my favorite traits of the Japanese is their sheer proclivity for improvement. This is most relevant to me in the form of tailoring, personally, though I think it is true of many crafts. The impact that Japanese tailors have had on what tailoring is is likely to only be understood fully a hundred years out from now, but Japanese tailors are now regularly turning out more trad American suits than the retailers that defined trad American style, its offshoot in Ivy, and Ivy's offshoot in prep. Almost all the staples of my wardrobe are rooted pretty firmly in what is ultimately a uniquely American sartorial tradition, and almost all of them have been absolutely perfected by Japanese manufacturers and tailors. OCBDs with the traditional number of buttons and a beautiful collar roll, 100% cotton naturally indigo dyed selvedge denim, penny loafers. All uniquely American sartorial developments, all things they've absolutely mastered despite being so physically far away from here. It's remarkable to me. It astounds me so much that I really don't think it's unreasonable to assume this capacity for understanding other perspectives (which I assume is culturally mediated) has got to contribute to their astonishingly low murder rate.
