A number of Senate Republicans on Tuesday rejected the idea of lifting the debt ceiling temporarily to buy Congress more time to negotiate a larger measure with the White House that would prevent a default.

On Monday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the deadline to prevent a default on the nation's debt could be as early as June 1, four days before her previous prediction. The U.S. hit the statutory borrowing limit in January and has been using “extraordinary measures” to pay the bills.

Several GOP lawmakers said that pushing back the deadline will only shift negotiations into the future because Washington is known for addressing these crises at the last minute.

"If she [Yellen] would have said June 15, it would have been done closer to June 15," said Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D. "If she would have said July 1, it would have been done closer to July 1. This will always go down to the wire when you have divided government."

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., agreed it's a "silly" idea, telling reporters: "We all work around deadlines here. If we do a short-term extension, it means we won’t get into negotiations in earnest until three or four weeks before whatever the new extension is. That’s how this place works."

"We’ve been kicking the can down the road for four and a half years since I’ve been here," said Sen. Mike Braun, R-Ind. "We need to at least agree to something without delaying it."

Asked if he would be open to a short-term debt ceiling increase, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., said, "No, absolutely not. That's just a bunch of gimmicks."

Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., also said that it's a "mistake" because it brings "more uncertainty."

Senate Minority Whip John Thune, R-S.D., also poured cold water over a short-term extension, saying it isn’t a good idea and cast doubt on whether it’d even have the votes.

“I would prefer that we get this done the first time. That always gets dicey. And, frankly, I don’t even know if there’d be the votes for that,” Thune told reporters. “I think there’s going to have to be a really earnest effort made to try and negotiate something that can get passed by the deadline.”

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., meanwhile, said he was open to a 30-day extension to lift the debt limit.

While members of Congress are not actively pursuing a short-term extension at the moment, Congress has passed such measures in recent debacles over the debt ceiling to allow more time for talks.

Senate Democratic leaders are keen on sticking to the White House's demand to pass a clean debt ceiling increase.

"Our position remains the same," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said on the Senate floor Tuesday. "Both parties should do what we have done in the past, the last three times default faced us. Both parties should pass a clean bipartisan bill to avoid default together."

Schumer lashed out at House Republicans and specifically Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., for the debt limit bill they passed last week in the lower chamber. Schumer said McCarthy "caved to extremists" in agreeing to the legislation that would slash federal spending.

McCarthy, in a statement responding to Yellen's letter, said Monday that "House Republicans did their job." He also criticized President Joe Biden, saying he "has refused to do his job."

McCarthy did, however, accept Biden's invitation to meet with him and other top congressional leaders at the White House on May 9 to discuss the debt ceiling, a source familiar with the call confirmed.

House Democrats are also preparing a plan to pass a clean debt ceiling bill through a special rule, which could be brought to the floor without support from GOP leadership. It would, however, need all Democratic House members to vote for it — as well as a handful of Republicans — and at least 60 Senators to defeat a filibuster in the Senate.

"What Trump is doing is laying the groundwork for rejecting the election results if he loses," the U.S. senator said.

Independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont warned Tuesday that former President Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican nominee, is laying the groundwork for another round of election denial if he loses to Vice President Kamala Harris in November.

Taking aim at Trump's false claim that a photo showing thousands of people waiting to greet Harris and her Democratic running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, at a Michigan airport is a fake generated by artificial intelligence, Sanders said in a statement that "Donald Trump may be crazy, but he's not stupid."

"When he claims that 'nobody' showed up at a 10,000-person Harris-Walz rally in Michigan that was live streamed and widely covered by the media, that it was all AI, and that Democrats cheat all of the time, there is a method to his madness," the senator continued.

"Clearly, and dangerously, what Trump is doing is laying the groundwork for rejecting the election results if he loses," Sanders argued. "If you can convince your supporters that thousands of people who attended a televised rally do not exist, it will not be hard to convince them that the election returns in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and elsewhere are 'fake' and 'fraudulent.'"

"This is what destroying faith in institutions is about. This is what undermining democracy is about. This is what fascism is about," he added. "This is why we must do everything we can to see that Trump is defeated."

Trump infamously tried to overturn the results of his 2020 loss to President Joe Biden, an effort that culminated in the January 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection and resulted in a historic second impeachment by the then-Democrat-controlled House of Representatives and a slew of federal and state felony charges in two separate election interference cases.

As his polling lead evaporates amid surging liberal enthusiasm over the Harris-Walz ticket, Trump has reverted to his oft-repeated 2020 claim that if he loses, it will be due to "cheating."

Trump, his running mate Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), and many Republican officials have recently ramped up attacks on undocumented immigrants. Although the myth of the "illegal immigrant voters" has been widely debunked—including by right-wing groups—Republicans and others including billionaire businessman Elon Musk, who interviewed Trump on his social media platform X Monday evening, have been amplifying false claims about undocumented voters affecting the outcome of the election.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.)—who led the legal fight to overturn the 2020 election results—also recently accused undocumented immigrants of attempting to "disrupt our elections."

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.)—one of just eight senators who refused to certify Biden's 2020 Electoral College victory—said in July: "I traveled to the future to an imaginary world where actually Joe Biden got reelected... In my dream I met the ghost of Biden's future... It was easy for Democrats to rig the elections; they simply allowed all the non citizens to vote."

On Monday, the government watchdog Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) published a report revealing that 35 county officials around the country who were involved in efforts to subvert the 2020 election are still in positions to do so again.

"I think there's almost no question that this is going to happen," CREW president Noah Bookbinder said of another attempt to overturn the election. "And it seems to be happening in a way this year that is more systematic than it has been in the past. So that's deeply, deeply concerning."

Just when Beth and Kyle Long received the worst news of their life, an Ohio law made their searing pain even worse.

For four years, the Longs tried to have a baby, enduring multiple rounds of grueling fertility treatments. In September 2022, Beth finally became pregnant.

But an ultrasound four months later showed that most of the baby’s organs were outside the body.

The condition, called limb body wall complex, is rare.

“It’s just not survivable,” a doctor involved in Beth’s care told CNN.

“They will die. There’s no way there will be a life,” said Dr. Alireza Shamshirsaz, a spokesperson for the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, who was not involved in Beth’s care.

The condition posed dangers for Beth too, and the bigger the baby was, the higher the risk of complications, including dangerous bleeding that might require a hysterectomy. They say their doctor urged them to terminate the pregnancy as soon as possible.

But when the Longs tried to schedule the abortion, they found out that their insurance wouldn’t pay for it.

Beth takes care of breast cancer patients at a state-owned hospital. She’s employed by the state of Ohio, and state law bans her health insurance from paying for abortions except in certain cases.

Endangerment to the life of the mother is one of them, and although she was at an increased risk for potentially deadly complications, Beth’s life was not in imminent danger, and the Longs say their doctor told them the insurance wouldn’t cover the procedure.

Beth and Kyle would have to foot the bill: between $20,000 and $30,000. After spending $45,000 on fertility treatments, they didn’t have the money.

It took them three weeks to make arrangements to go to a hospital that could perform the complicated abortion at a lower price. It was hours away, in another state.

During that three-week wait – a wait they had to endure only because of the Ohio law – the risk to Beth of potentially deadly complications grew. Their ability to try to have another baby was delayed, and their “agony” couldn’t end, Beth said.

“I was in mental anguish,” Beth said.

“It felt very inhumane for both our baby and for my wife,” Kyle added.

The hospital they found was a three-hour drive away, in Pittsburgh. Away from their regular obstetrician, whom Beth had known for years; away from their doula; away from their friends and family. The Longs were alone. ....

Kyle has reached out to his elected representatives, including Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Sen. JD Vance, both Republicans.

He told them that Ohio law had “turned a difficult situation into something nearly unbearable.”

“I am a lifelong Republican, but this has turned me into a one-issue voter for those that support reproductive rights.”

“I’m writing you to please reconsider how you approach reproductive rights going forward. There are a lot of unintended consequences for families from these laws, and while I can understand you come from a good place, care should ultimately be left to the parents and their physicians. We loved our baby girl and would have done anything to keep her,” he wrote, adding that Ohio abortion laws “prevent grieving parents from the healthcare they need.”

He says he never received a response from either DeWine or Vance.

Georgia Senate Candidates Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker Will Advance to a December Runoff Election

Georgia Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker will face off again in a runoff election next month to determine who wins the race.

The candidates came in neck-and-neck in Tuesday’s general election, with neither reaching the required 50% vote threshold to win the race outright, as 98% of ballots were counted.

Georgia secretary of state’s chief operating officer Gabriel Sterling had announced via Twitter Wednesday that a two-round system would be likely.

“While county officials are still doing the detailed work on counting the votes, we feel it is safe to say there will be a runoff for the U.S. Senate here in Georgia,” Sterling said, adding that it would be slated for Dec. 6.

Sen. Warnock, 53, has been down the runoff road before, as the same situation occurred in 2020. The reverend then won during round two in Jan. 2021. It was the first time since 2014 that Democrats gained control of the state, as 35-year-old Jonathan Ossoff also won for the Democratic Party that year.

Making history as the state’s first Black senator, Warnock thanked voters during his victory speech last year. “Tonight, we proved that with hope, hard work, and the people by our side, anything is possible,” he said of his historic win.

The 2020 campaigns drew immense funding and attracted the likes of President-elect Joe Biden, former Presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama, former first lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Mike Pence, and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, who all appeared at campaign events in-person or virtually to rally voters.

This year, President Obama hit the campaign trail once again to urge voters to help keep Democrats in office.

“I am counting on you to stay here through the evening, and I’m counting on you to do what is necessary if we must to fight on [in] December,” Sen. Ossoff recently urged supporters at Warnock’s campaign HQ in Atlanta in the case of a second face-off.

Sen. Warnock’s opponent this time around, republican candidate Walker, 60, a college football hall-of-famer out of University of Georgia, announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate last summer, and won Georgia’s Republican Senate primary in May.

“I will stand up for conservative values and get our country moving in the right direction,” he said at the time. “I’m a kid from a small town in Georgia who lived the American Dream and I’m ready to fight to keep that dream alive for you too.”

It was a tight race for Sen. Warnock and Walker for most of the midterm election.

The Georgia runoff will see the two go head to head again, this time without a third-party candidate on the ticket to siphon off votes. In the month before the follow-up election, the candidates will battle to woo the approximately 80,000 Georgians who voted Libertarian.

Kaksi vaikutusvaltaista yhdysvaltalaista senaattoria, Mike Rounds ja senaatin enemmistöjohtaja Chuck Schumer, ovat elvyttäneet tunnistamattomia poikkeavia ilmiöitä (UAP) koskevan lain (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena Act), joka ottaisi seuraavan presidentin suoraan mukaan prosessiin, joka saattaisi paljastaa, että kehittynyt ei-inhimillinen älykkyys on ottanut yhteyttä Maahan.

Lautakunta valvoisi UAP-asiakirjojen keräämistä, tarkistamista ja julkistamista, ja sillä olisi valtuudet tutkia aineistoa, pyytää todistajanlausuntoja ja kerätä lisää todistajia ja ilmiantajia.

Tarkastuslautakunnan perustaminen estäisi valtion virastoja ja yksityishenkilöitä, joita syytetään osallistumisesta laittomiin UAP-ohjelmiin, tutkimasta ja vapauttamasta itseään syytteistä. Tämän jälkeen se käy läpi konferenssiprosessin, jossa senaatin ja edustajainhuoneen versiot NDAA:sta neuvotellaan ja sovitetaan yhteen yhdeksi, yhtenäiseksi lakiehdotukseksi.

Luonnoksen tekstiasu näyttää suurelta osin olevan sama kuin viime vuoden lakiehdotuksessa, mutta UAP:n tietojen julkistamista käsittelevä säätiö on jätetty pois yhdeksi niistä elimistä, jotka antavat suosituksia UAP:n asiakirjojen arviointilautakunnan jäseniksi; vaikka viittaus vakiintuneisiin voittoa tavoittelemattomiin UAP:n tutkimusorganisaatioihin on sisällytetty tähän tehtävään.

Tämä on huomionarvoista, kun otetaan huomioon tällaisten organisaatioiden syntyminen kahden edellisen vuoden aikana.

Toinen huomionarvoinen termi on ”tuntematonta alkuperää oleva teknologia”, joka määritellään seuraavasti: ”materiaalit tai metamateriaalit, syöksykappaleet, törmäysromut, mekanismit, koneet, laitteet, kokoonpanot tai osakokoonpanot, tekniset mallit tai prosessit, vahingoittuneet tai ehjät ilmailu- ja avaruusajoneuvot sekä vahingoittuneet tai ehjät merenpinnan ja meren alaiset alukset, jotka liittyvät tunnistamattomiin poikkeaviin ilmiöihin tai sisältävät tiedettä ja teknologiaa, jolla ei ole proosallista alkuperää tai tunnettuja inhimillisiä valmistuskeinoja”.

Liberation Times tietää, että UAP-nouto-operaatioita on useita eri olosuhteissa ja eri paikoissa, myös merellä ja kiistellyillä alueilla.

Lähteiden mukaan näihin operaatioihin osallistuu voimakkaasti CIA:n operatiivinen osasto ja tiede- ja teknologiaosasto.

Sen lisäksi, että viime vuoden UAPDA:n tarkistuslautakunta palautetaan, myös kiistanalainen pakkolunastuslauseke on otettu uudelleen käyttöön.

Useat lähteet ovat kertoneet Liberation Timesille, että tämä lauseke on aiheuttanut huomattavia kiistoja puolustusalan alihankkijoiden keskuudessa, joiden uskotaan omistavan tuntematonta tai ei-ihmisperäistä teknologiaa; lausekkeen uskotaan olleen merkittävä tekijä, joka johti UAPDA:n leikkaamiseen viime vuonna.

Tämä tarkoittaa, että Lockheed Martinin kaltaiset yritykset tai muut puolustusalan urakoitsijat, joilla on mahdollisesti hallussaan tällaisia materiaaleja, joutuisivat luovuttamaan ne hallitukselle.

Vaikka Yhdysvaltain lainsäädännössä on jo ennakkotapaus pakkolunastuksesta, senaattorit Rounds ja Schumer saattavat joutua tekemään kompromissin tästä lausekkeesta, jos UAPDA halutaan sisällyttää senaatin lopulliseen versioon, joka menee kongressin konferenssikomitealle.

Liberation Times on saanut useista lähteistä, myös kongressin sisältä, tietää, että viime vuonna UAPDA poistettiin merkittävästi NDAA:sta edustajainhuoneen tiedustelukomitean puheenjohtajan, edustaja Mike Turnerin, voimakkaan vastarinnan jälkeen, sillä lähteiden mukaan puolustusalan yritykset olivat lobanneet häntä voimakkaasti.

Riippumatta siitä, kumpi voittaa yhä dramaattisemman vaalikilpailun, jos UAPDA sisällytetään kokonaisuudessaan lopulliseen NDAA:han, on seuraavan presidentin vastuulla panna sen toimet täytäntöön.

Liberation Timesin käsityksen mukaan presidentti Bidenin ja hänen republikaanivastustajansa, entisen presidentin Trumpin, lähipiiriin kuuluvat henkilöt olivat mukana viimeisimmän UAPDA:n laatimisessa ja henkiin herättämisessä.

Uusi UAPDA esiteltiin vain muutama päivä sen jälkeen, kun senaattori Richard Blumenthal esitteli kongressin ilmiantajien suojelua koskevan lain, jonka tarkoituksena on suojella kongressille tietoja raportoivia henkilöitä kostotoimilta. Tämä on ratkaisevan tärkeää, koska Liberation Times ymmärtää, että ilmiantajat ovat kokeneet itsensä yhä haavoittuvammiksi lisääntyvän vihamielisyyden edessä.

Senaattori Blumenthalin laki sisältää useita keskeisiä säännöksiä:

Liittovaltion viraston laaja määritelmä: Varmistetaan ilmiantajien kattava suojelu hallituksen eri työaloilla määrittelemällä liittovaltion virasto siten, että se kattaa kaikki liittohallituksen toimialat.

Liberation Times -lehdelle puhunut entinen Watergate- ja Pentagon Papers -juristi Daniel Sheehan, New Paradigm Instituten päälakimies, totesi, että ehdotetut uudet suojatoimet voivat tukea UAP:n ilmiantajia, mutta sanoi, että säännökset voisivat mennä pidemmälle:

”New Paradigm Institute onnittelee Connecticutin senaattoria Blumenthalia siitä, että hän esitti 11. heinäkuuta Yhdysvaltain senaatissa kauan odotetun yleisen ”tehostetun” liittovaltion Whistleblower Protection Act -lain.

“New Paradigm Instituten ehdottamassa lakiehdotuksessa ei vaadita UFOihin liittyvää liittovaltion ilmiantajaa, vaikka hänellä olisikin kansallinen turvallisuusselvitys, hakemaan ensin hallinnollista helpotusta ennen kuin hän voi nostaa siviilioikeudellisen kanteen sellaista liittovaltion työntekijää tai virkamiestä vastaan, joka ryhtyy ”kostotoimiin” sellaista ufoihin liittyvää liittovaltion ilmiantajaa vastaan, joka yrittää välittää kongressille UFOja tai avaruusolentoja koskevia tietoja.

Liberation Times ymmärtää, että nykyinen ilmiantajaprosessi on perustavanlaatuisesti puutteellinen, ja nykyisten suojatoimien täytäntöönpano riippuu suuresti paitsi tiedusteluyhteisön päätarkastajan myös CIA:n ja kansallisen tiedustelupalvelun kaltaisten virastojen päätarkastajien pätevyydestä ja halukkuudesta.

Nämä puutteet korostavat sitä, että on erittäin tärkeää, että kaikki asiaankuuluvat elimet harjoittavat vahvaa valvontaa ja johdonmukaista täytäntöönpanoa, jotta voidaan varmistaa, että ilmiantajia suojellaan asianmukaisesti.

US Senate to consider sanctions against ICC staff, ban on US visas

The US Congressional Senate is discussing the possibility of imposing sanctions on a number of International Criminal Court (ICC) officials, as well as banning their US visas, Fox News reports.

The resolution, led by Sens. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), exclusively obtained by Fox News Digital, recommends that President Biden and Congress “impose financial sanctions and visa bans on International Criminal Court officials for abuses of power that threaten the interests of the US and weaken its allies.”

The resolution would put on record that the US Senate “stands with Israel and fully rejects the International Criminal Court’s actions against senior Israeli officials.”

In addition, the resolution calls on allies and partners, who the senators note are largely responsible for funding the ICC, to “use their leverage to stop the politicised proceedings”.
