one thing about ptj's writing that always leaves a bad taste in my mouth is sometimes i feel he doesn't completely grasp the issues of abuse and sexual trauma, mostly and majorly for the female characters, but the male characters too.

take for example mira getting sexually assaulted by the cult leader and camp instructor, zoe's transaction with logan, club vivi, vin'mom being raped and killed by the shaman, sujin being abused and preyed upon and sexually assaulted before getting beaten to death by taejin... ALL of this feels so catatonic, almost unnecessary in its cruelty. this is a horrible world no doubt. but whatever he inflicts to his female characters seems to be done purely for the sake of shock value, almost like an indelible grief or hurt or helplessness a MALE character has to overcome in his path to nirvana. it is never shown what the woman feels about her own violation, no impact of it can be seen on her own life before she dies or simply forgets and moves on (kinda telling of the author's attitude towards how victims ought to react...).

then lets talk about the male victims. daniel gets stalked, goo and gun and eli were all minors who trained under a man who unironically touches people's genitals and brags about doing so, olly gets raped, eli gets groomed (i will not argue here about this one), sinu is shown naked often with the woman who brainwashed him. not mentioned in the comic but should be pondered upon is the fact that jake and jiho were in juvenile prison, a place with alarmingly high rates of sex crimes. dg is an idol who deals with invasive fans (sasaengs in real life are legitimately terrifying). seongji and vin were the ritual vessels for a cult. but this aspect of their trauma gets completely brushed under the rug, as if even alluding to it would take away from their strength and uhhh, masculine nature.

The monster of the mountain looks at you, face blank though eyes amused, tanghulu hanging from his mouth.

You've seen him enough times to know there's not much monstrous about him, apart from his overwhelming sweet tooth.

Rumours of this monster were grossly exaggerated.

Maybe you should have had more self preservation than to wander the mountainside when such tales persist. Yet when you found out the monster was a mere man, a mere boy close to your age, who seemed to have a penchant for sugary, syrup covered fruit-

You realised the only thing to fear was cavities and tooth decay.

Still. It helps to have someone with such a reputation on your side, you decide as you toss over a pack of fruit gummies.

A hand shoots out and swiftly catches it.

"Thought you might like these," you shrug as he gives you an odd look, "See ya!"

After the fifth pack of candies you threw at him, the guilt sets in.

You make your way through now familiar half hidden paths, searching for the monster.

He's there. Sitting in front of his giant wok, surrounded by freshly made tanghulu. Scents of sugar and caramel fill the air.

"You're here again," The words are spoken so quietly you almost missed them. His voice is softer than you expected.

"I bought you more things," you hold out a small plastic bag. He gives you the same look each time. 

"Open it," you encourage, shoving it more forcefully in his direction.

With little trust - which is somewhat unfair, you think, considering all the treats he has received from you - he takes the bag.

(Six. You know you saw six fingers on that hand.)

He opens it, peers in, face clouded with caution. Then-

Eyebrows shooting into his hairline, eyes widening almost comically, mouth forming an 'o'-

The tension breaks and he chuckles.

"It's one thing if all the tanghulu you eat rots your teeth, that's your own fault," You rub the back of your head self-consciously as he pulls out more fruit candies, as well as a new toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash one after the other. "But if it's because of me then..."

"You're strange," he says, staring at you like you're a puzzle he can't quite figure out.

His words have no bite.

"Seongji Yuk," he eventually provides his name with reluctance. In exchange, you provide the rest of the banchan and rice to accompany his homemade kimchi.

(Your single braincell stopped functioning the first time you realised he does in fact eat something besides sugar.

It's endearing, this supposed 'monster' making his own tanghulu, making his own kimchi.

You kept comparing his recipe with your own before eventually he asked you to leave out of exasperation.)

"Well Seongji, your kimchi needs more saeujeot," It's not bad, it's just missing something.

"You don't have to eat it," he grumbles, swallowing down an extra big mouthful.

"So..."  You stall, elongating the word, letting it drift into the night. You don't really know Seongji well, hell you don't know him at all. Maybe it would be intrusive to ask.

You hear a rustling beside you. "So what?"

"So… you live on this mountain?"

"I do."

"Huh." You gaze out at the stars. It's a pretty peaceful existence, or it would be if not for Cheonliang. "On your own?"

"Yes."

"Do you ever get lonely?"

A beat. Then - "No."

Oh.

You turn to him and see his face blank but eyes amused. Messy hair and high cheekbones highlighted by the fire.

"Well I can visit you if I get lonely then."

There's a huff of laughter. Seongji knows he can't stop you anyway. He turns back toward the vast inky sky. Takes in the scattered stars. Feels the heat from the flames, a heat that settles into his cheeks.

A smile dances on his lips when he tells you "Okay."

“Stereotypical-First” Type of Guy

This man is an absolute sucker for romance. It’s obvious that he actually cares and that first date won’t certainly be the last. It all started off as jokes & teasing, until you two developed feelings. So, now you’re sitting with him on a picnic blanket in a secluded part of the beach and it’s around 6 in the evening. He got you a bouquet of your favorite flowers, an item you really like [books, art materials, etc.], and prepared the scene the two of you were sat at. Theres a picnic basket on the blanket, various seashells you two collected all around you two, some petals he placed in advance to set the scene— It was straight out of a movie. He lit up a candle with one of the scents you’ve mentioned was your favorite and it’s safe to say his efforts paid off. Eventually, you two went on a stroll after having a little dinner. You went around the beach and reached the ocean shore— which escalated in an innocent water fight. You guys splashed one another with water and laughed. This guy has good aim so you were really soaked while he was still mostly dry… So he made it an opportunity to give you his jacket/coat, since you were wearing a not so thick dress and got soaked in cold water.

This guy specifically tells you that this is his favorite place, and he’s brought a very close guy friend of his or two, but has never even mentioned it to a girl. This small and cozy place is hidden in a secluded area, so you two had a romantic night. It ended with him taking you back to your place and a good night kiss. It felt surreal considering you’ve been just friends for so long who has actually had feelings for each other but never admitted until just recently, which led to this first date.

This guy is simple and you stayed for that. Ever since you first met him, it was already made clear that he wasn’t the type of guy to be so outgoing and extra. He likes simple and innocent activities that you two do because it puts a smile on your face, and anything that makes you happy, makes him even happier. And knowing how much you love movies, he decided he’d go ahead and prepare the movie you’ve been dying to see for so long, so that the two of you could watch it at his place. It was just you and him, nobody else, sat down together with various snacks that he noticed you love. It didn’t matter to him what movie it was— comedy, adventure, horror, or even romance, what mattered to him was your enjoyment that night. This guy is rich, he’s filthy rich. As expected from these kinds of guys, your first date is at a classy restaurant that you can’t even pronounce the name of. He picks you up from your house in one of his cars, which he made sure to choose your favorite color & the car you seemed most comfortable in. But he also made sure to choose something flashy, so that you wouldn’t be thinking of any of the other cars he owns. He’s dressed up in a suit, and this guy has plenty of them. His hair is fixed for the occasion and his fragrance is one you can’t forget because of how good it smells, but it isn’t too strong so that it won’t get to your head. He picks you up in the evening, around five. He goes up to your doorstep with a large bouquet of your favorite flowers and chocolates he knows are your favorites. He patiently waited at your door while you were putting the flowers in a vase with water, and the gifts in the refrigerator / on the counter, (because chocolates wasn’t the only gift he brought you). He made sure to be even more of a gentleman than he already is to you, opening the door for you, pulling the chair for you to sit on. And because you’re wearing a dress with little to no sleeves, he gave you his coat.

Seongji would have thought that he would've been alone his whole life. After escaping the Shamans grasp, he full heartedly accepted the quiet and loneliness that whatever gods above have given him for the rest of his life.

Though of course, just like in the fairytales, someone always disrupted the gods deeds.

"I swear you have some of the most prettiest hands I have ever seen. I'm being serious." Seongji would have had never thought that someone— anyone actually, would compliment his condition. Having been cursed with an extra finger in each hand and foot, he was considered an anomaly to human society.

Yet everytime you were near him, you thought so different. You complimented and praised him for surviving up until now and how his hands made him unique.

Though it always came with a side effect..

"You look like a cat when you shy away it's adorable! Who knew a big guy like you could be so timid?"

You always teased him unfortunately.

He probably should have had been used to it by now, Seongji has known you for... Actually who knows how long. But it's definitely been long enough. Long enough to get used to your teasings and small pranks.

Was that going to happen though?

Probably not.

"I'm trying to cook. Shut up." He refused to make eye contact with you. Only focusing on what he had on his cooking pot while trying not to mess up.

"You can cook just fine, can't you?" Was all he heard from you, he didn't think much of it until you wrapped your arms around his waist from behind. His body tensed up completely, almost dropping the cooking utensil onto the food. Curse him for dropping his guard for practically zero around you.

"Keep cooking." Your hot breath brushed against his ear, along with your glasses lightly moving his hair. His hand began to shake, Seongji knew how to survive— but absolutely did not know how to survive this nor was he prepared ever in his life.

The his ears began to turn into a light red tint, his heart thumping at an abnormal rate. Was this normal? Surely it was.

"Your hands are pretty. But your gorgeous, you know that right?" You gently rubbed your cheek against his like a cat, your words slurred slightly— hinting that you were either getting sleepy or just extremely comfortable with him.

Seongji wanted to shrug you off, wanting to tell you how stupid and corny you sounded but he didn't have the heart to tell you. He sighed and lifted one of his hands, trying oh so hard to sustain the blush on his face to only fail miserably, he gently pushed your face away from his which took you by surprise.

"Go away, you have better things to do." He muttered, still refusing as much as to even glance your way and focusing on his cooking just as you had told him to a few minutes ago.

You dramatically groaned, leaning your weight onto his figure which didn't even make him budge despite being the same height. "Noo..."

"Stop being a baby and go."

"Nooooooo"

He called your name sternly, making you let go of him and huff out small incoherent grumbles. "Man... You're just a hater.." Of course, you didn't actually mean them and he knew it.

Hearing you retreat, he had let go of the breath he had been holding for who knows how long.

You stared at the group of kids not too far away, a small smile on your lips. It had been so peaceful recently— except for Vin Jin being there and erupt chaos to disrupt the peace because that kid was filled with energy.

Yet even with his chaotic energy, you called it peaceful. They were all carefree and didn't have to worry about the shaman or the other citizens of the town here up in the mountain with you and Seongji. Like all of you were a big and happy family.

It felt warm.

You didn't notice it cause you were too busy staring at the group, that someone had begun to creep up behind you. In a blink of an eye, everything was blurry for you. Your lips parted slightly while blinking more before putting a hand up to adjust your glasses.

They weren't there any more.

"Wow, you're pretty blind." Spoke a voice next to you. You turned your head and saw Seongji trying to look around with them before looking at you with that same stoic expression.

He didn't even react to stealing your glasses, he still had the same expression as always without an inch of his facial features twitching even the slightest.

"Hey." His voice snapped you out of your daze, only to make you deadpan. How and why was he still good looking? Even with the glasses that might as well be a bonus.

"What?"

After what seemed for a little too long, the man slowly raised up his hand.

"How many fingers am I holding?"

"..."

"Woah.."

"Hey... Aren't those.."

"Why the fuck are they running."

The group of teenagers began to huddle slightly as they witnessed a scene of you chasing Seongji to God knows where while he's wearing your glasses.

Mary couldn't help but to laugh a bit, Vin Jin and the boys were just hyping up Seongji but knew you would still catch up to him.

In the end, you managed to grab a hold on the jacket around Seongjis waist to which the boys had to pay Mary for losing the bet.

You took your glasses back and smacked the back of Seongjis head. Then pinched his cheeks with an irk mark on your forehead.

"You think you're sooooo funny don'cha?" You continued to pull his cheeks more, an irritated smile on your lips while your eye twitched.

Seongji didn't react much, he winced slightly at first but it didn't really hurt.

Oh well, at least he was able to look at you now.

A message notification diverts your attention from the tanghulu.

"Oh he’s cute!" you say, jabbing your finger at Seongji's phone screen.

Seongji squints at the profile photo of Jaegyeon Na, King of Incheon. Cute? Him? 

With his black hair and red tips, sharp eyes and cutting gaze. Adorned head to toe in some brand name or another. That piece of junk that he calls Initial N in the background. Perhaps some people would find him attractive but Seongji didn't expect him to be your type-

Shrugging, "He looks like you," You gesticulate vaguely, "But y'know, tacky."

Seongji holds back a frown at that comment, unsure whether to dwell on you thinking that Jaegyeon Na and him look alike, or the implication that you also find himself cute.

His face must have betrayed him though.

With a grin, you tell him, "Don't worry, you're still my favourite."

You pat his hand in what was meant to be an assuring manner.

"Finish your tanghulu," he manages but the words feel awkward coming out. Decides to file this conversation, these thoughts away for another time. Leaves the dots unconnected for now.

Moonlight spills through the window. Seongji holds up and examines his hand.

For the first time, he doesn't notice his sixth finger. All he can feel is the ghost of your touch as he remembers your hand on top of his.
