Uhh almost christmas so.. baking cookies/gingerbreads with Dethband and CHARLES, which make best cookie and which fucked up the cooke and which burned the kitchen
Cute!!! Anyone who follows me elsewhere knows I'm infamous for failing to get holiday posts out on-time, so I'm rather happy about getting something done ahead of time for once. Enjoy! <3
Tumblr media
Charles Foster Offdensen
Charles is very attentive to even the smallest of details. You have to be, in his position — even disregarding the whole prophecy thing, his life is full of little things to micromanage and keep track of. Which is really what baking is, right? Perfect measurements, exact timing, sequential orders… which means he should be a natural at it, right?
Well, you’d be wrong.
He doesn’t burn down the kitchen mind you, but his baking adventures are… lackluster. You think the dough senses his lack of passion for the craft, because every time you manage to drag him into the kitchen to bake with you the results are just… average. Not that it’s a boring process, by any means — you still have your fun together! Chatting, dancing around him to grab an ingredient or two, swaying together before the timer goes off, sneaking a kiss here and there… It’s a fun winter project, even if the fruits of your labor are more run of the mill.
Tumblr media
Nathan Explosion
Baking is not brutal, and truth be told, it kind of irks him that he’s so good at it. As a kid, he’d sit on the counter while his mom baked various treats for the neighborhood at Christmas time, and he supposes some of that must have sunk into his developing brain. He’s not gonna get in the kitchen unprompted, but if you want to bake with him, he won’t say no.
He’s not big on the actual decorating part… at least, not at first. Once you introduce the idea of making your creations a bit more metal, he gets really into it. The glasses are on, and he’s got a quarter of a million toothpicks out to help perfect his lines and sprinkles.
You’re snacking on decapitated gingerbread men and disembowled reindeer for weeks.
Tumblr media
Pickles the Drummer
Pickles doesn’t bake, he gets baked.
Seriously, don’t let him near the kitchen. Ever. Best case scenario, you get a charred husk out of the oven. Worst case scenario… Well, it’s a good thing Charles didn’t spare any expenses for the sprinkler system. You don’t know how he does it, really — one minute things are fine, and then suddenly there’s just a mountain of flames erupting from 5 different ovens. You didn’t even think you had more than one on, but that doesn’t really matter when, again, there’s fire.
You’ll have fun decorating together — his gingerbread men are very charming, in a fucked-up kind of way — but that’s about the limit of his baking prowess. You can absolutely make a day of it — he’s a delight when icing your creations — but again, do not let him near the oven.
Tumblr media
Skwisgaar Skwigelf
He’s such a perfectionist that you think he’d be great at baking but… he has a bit of a careless streak, and this is one of those moments where that really shines through. He’s a decent enough cook, but he can’t bake for shit. It frustrates him a bit, actually. His creations always turn out a little bit off — not enough for them to be inedible, but definitely not up to his standards. Do not let him lead on the actual chemistry side of baking, he will crash out.
That’s not to say he doesn’t want to bake with you, not by any means! It’s just better to (subtly) give him some instructions, or better yet, stick him with mixing, or decorating. His ego will thank you, even if he doesn’t.
The most likely to turn your baking adventures into scene out of a Hallmark movie — he’s a quiet lover of fun romance, and is prone to pulling you into a dance when the mood strikes. And we all know he’s been saving up his one-liners for today.
Tumblr media
Toki Wartooth
Oh, this is his favorite time of year! Everything about it is just magical to him — he never really got to have the whole movie-magic Christmas growing up, so believe me when I say he takes every opportunity to bring those dreams to life. Toki’s a little too scatterbrained to actually bake solo — raw excitement and a little bit of undiagnosed ADHD draws him in too many directions at once, to where recipes fly into the back of his mind and get forgotten. He is, however, a wonderful assistant. And he’s an even better decorator!
They aren’t the picture-perfect Pinterest treats with immaculate iced lines and sprinkled sugar, but they’re perfect to the two of you. There’s a very palpable passion and love that radiates from them, and that’s what makes them so magic. And it was even easier than you thought to find diabetic-friendly recipes — insulin-resistance be damned, he will be indulging in some Christmas cheer.
And yes, he does make a little gingerbread family of you and the rest of the band. He almost immediately breaks gingerbread-Skwisgaar’s head clean off to have as a snack. And yes, he does leave his gingerbread body in the pile when it comes to leaving cookies out for the boys. Is it a threat? Is it just Toki being Toki? The world may never know.
Do be warned, he is a menace when it comes to stealing batter. And if you’re not careful, you’re liable to get attacked with some icing when you’re not looking. Stay on your guard.
Tumblr media
William Murderface
A lot of people assume he’s a shit baker — and he doesn’t really dispute that. He’s got a bit of a complex about it, and feels like it doesn’t fit his image. But in reality, he’s damn good at it. He doesn’t measure anything, and has never once pulled up a recipe, and yet… His creations are up there with the best of ‘em. He’ll deny his proficiency to anyone else, but he actually takes a lot of pride in it.
Don’t question him when he’s in the kitchen — he’s gonna suggest the most off-the-wall concoction, and it’s going to sound horrific, but when you actually try it? Divine. His decorating skills leave a bit to be desired, but who cares about presentation when the sweets are this damn good?
You make a good duo in the kitchen — he’ll do the chemistry, you’ll do the art. Do keep an eye on his hands though — he’s going to be covered in flour and batter and God knows what else, and he refuses to deal with that alone (despite banning you from actually cooking.) Wear a shirt you don’t care about, if you don’t want big white handprints on your Sunday’s best.

Low Voltage Relays Explained: Types, Functions, and Applications
Tumblr media
In the complex world of electrical systems, relays play a crucial role in ensuring safety, efficiency, and automation. Among these, low voltage relays stand out as versatile components that manage and protect circuits operating below 1000 volts. Whether in industrial automation, residential power distribution, or commercial infrastructure, these devices act as the nerve center of electrical control and protection.
In this comprehensive guide, we will break down what low voltage relays are, explore their types, explain their functions, and highlight their diverse applications across industries.
What Are Low Voltage Relays?
A low voltage relay is an electrically operated switch that uses a small control voltage (typically below 1000V AC or DC) to switch larger electrical loads on and off. These relays act as intermediaries between control circuits and power circuits, providing isolation, control, and protection.
Unlike manual switches, relays automate the process of circuit management, responding to electrical signals, fault conditions, or system commands without human intervention.
Types of Low Voltage Relays
Low voltage relays come in several forms, each tailored to specific tasks within an electrical system. Here are the main types:
1. Electromechanical Relays (EMRs)
· Use a coil and a movable armature to open or close contacts.
· Provide physical isolation between input and output.
· Common in traditional control panels and basic automation.
2. Solid-State Relays (SSRs)
· Use semiconductors (like thyristors or triacs) instead of mechanical contacts.
· Offer silent operation, faster switching, and longer lifespan.
· Ideal for high-speed applications and environments requiring low maintenance.
3. Overload Relays
· Specifically designed to protect motors and equipment from sustained overcurrent.
· Available as thermal overload relays (using bimetallic strips) or electronic overload relays (using sensors and processors).
4. Time Delay Relays
Provide a deliberate time lag between the relay receiving a signal and switching.
Used in motor control circuits, lighting systems, and sequential operations.
5. Overcurrent and Short-Circuit Relays
· Detect and react to current exceeding preset thresholds.
· Essential for system protection against faults and overloads.
6. Voltage Monitoring Relays
· Monitor voltage levels and trip when voltages fall below or rise above safe limits.
· Protect sensitive devices from under voltage and overvoltage conditions.
Functions of Low Voltage Relays
Low voltage relays serve multiple vital functions in electrical systems:
1. Switching and Control
Relays control the opening and closing of power circuits in response to low voltage signals from controllers, timers, or sensors. This enables remote and automated control of large electrical loads.
2. Protection
Relays detect abnormal conditions like overloads, overcurrent, under voltage, and phase failures. When such conditions arise, they disconnect the affected circuit to prevent equipment damage or fire hazards.
3. Isolation
They electrically isolate control circuits (usually low voltage, low current) from power circuits (high voltage, high current), ensuring safety and reducing interference.
4. Signal Amplification
A small control signal (from a PLC, sensor, or microcontroller) can trigger a relay to switch much larger loads, effectively amplifying the control power.
5. Automation and Sequencing
In complex systems, relays help sequence operations by ensuring that processes occur in the correct order and at the right time intervals.
Applications of Low Voltage Relays
Low voltage relays are the backbone of automation and protection in various industries. Here are some key application areas:
Industrial Automation
· Control of motors, pumps, conveyor belts, and production lines.
· Use in programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and distributed control systems (DCS).
Power Distribution Systems
· Protect electrical panels from overload and short circuits.
· Monitor voltage and current levels in distribution boards.
Building Automation
· Lighting control systems.
· HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems.
· Elevator and escalator controls.
Renewable Energy Systems
· Manage and protect solar inverters, battery banks, and wind turbines.
· Automatically disconnect faulty sections to prevent system-wide failures.
Data Centers and IT Infrastructure
· Ensure stable power supply to servers and networking equipment.
· Protect sensitive electronics from voltage fluctuations.
Transportation
· Railways, metros, and automotive applications for control and safety circuits.
Home Appliances
· Found in washing machines, microwave ovens, and HVAC units to automate functions and provide protection.
Advantages of Using Low Voltage Relays
· Enhanced Safety: Isolate control and power circuits, reducing electrical shock risks.
· Automation Ready: Easily integrated into automated systems for smarter operation.
· Cost-Effective Protection: Safeguard expensive equipment from damage due to electrical faults.
· Versatile: Available in many forms to suit different voltage levels, currents, and response times.
· Reduced Maintenance: Especially with solid-state relays, which have no moving parts.
Future Trends: Smart Relays and IoT Integration
As industries move toward smart grids and Industry 4.0, low voltage relays are also evolving:
· Digital relays offer programmable settings, self-testing, and event recording.
· IoT-enabled relays can send status updates and alerts to centralized monitoring systems.
· Energy-efficient designs reduce power consumption while providing reliable protection.
Conclusion
Low voltage relays are indispensable in modern electrical engineering, seamlessly combining protection, control, and automation. From safeguarding your home appliances to managing the power in a sprawling industrial plant, these devices ensure that electrical systems run smoothly and safely.
Understanding the different types, functions, and applications of low voltage relays empowers system designers, engineers, and even DIY enthusiasts to build safer and more efficient electrical setups.
As technology advances, the role of these small but mighty devices will only grow, driving the future of safe, smart, and automated power systems.

ex and bee - an overview of so far, my yays and nays and season 2 predictions
Tumblr media
NB: spoilers for the entirety of season one!! listen to ex and bee here!!
- so far, so good!!
it's not an exaggeration to say that so far I have been invested into the series; I remember being excited and staying up for release times so I could listen to it before most, and internalize most of my excitement for the next "ex and bee fridays (at 3am)".
the voice acting in this project is an absolute treat. bringing some of the versed and talented voice actors from obey me and planting them into a project with arguably completely different tone from the former is fun! kada mentions how ex is much different from the characters he's usually type casted as, and all of them have openly expressed love and care for their characters. it is clear that they do not only do this as a job, but as a poignant passion.
a highlight was actually finding out that takuhei yamamoto was not only the 9-1-1 operator but also the voice of derek malcom.. although I'm the "voice actor super fan" I didn't recognize the voice until the very last episode credits. derek was a wonderful treat within the story; acting as a stereotypical blogger and social media superstar brought some level of humour, maybe just to me.. is it a crime to say I wouldn't mind derek becoming a reoccurring character? the more somber and serious tone of a detective investigation could use a character like him
(or maybe I just like yamamoto-san.. right..)
- however..
I did not like the handling of the reveal that ex was a dhampir. it felt.. very underwhelming; perhaps it was meant to swell up to this peak: ex isn't just an autistic detective interested in the occult, but a dhampir, capable of actually putting a stop to blod's tyranny, and I feel like such could've been handled much better than just a flashback, and ex basically telling us in this very..boring and plain way of reading a letter.. (i of course don't blame kada, i blame more the writing methinks).
and for me, i found that episode six (Web of Deception) was a much more exciting and thrilling episode; the revelation of the missing clock ticks, the discovery of elizabeth and Blod in the tomb and the dubbing of the former as a witch; this entire episode was just brimming with sequential finale energy. i liked the use of auditory clues instead of it being flat out described to us from bee's perspective..
blod's voice acting.. wow..sumi shinya's performance here is absolutely phenomenal. and the cliffhanger; bee absolutely hypnotised by power and blood and blod's ominous "Come to my side." ...
chills, literal chills.. it just made me sort of disappointed by the actual finale.
the use of a part-timer as a self insert is.. okay. personally I didn't care for them, so whenever they were mentioned in the story I sort of zoned out.. but it brings some subtle world building that I really didn't mind.
predictions, more like begging solmare.
honestly, as an overall great season, I'm not sure how they could top this!! my initial idea would be that since the solving of victor holloway's murder gave them so much money, perhaps they'd be able to go in a luxurious cruise (or not.. ex seems to be the frugal type). a cruise ship murder, though slightly cliche, has a lot going for it, and perhaps a derek cameo too!! I'd like the idea that bee still experiences subtle flashbacks and trauma from the events of last season, or perhaps some mind control from blod? looking at bee's design, you can see a dagger almost stenciled onto his palm; perhaps this is a physical sign of his old allegiance, an establishment of control (the sigil of a blood pact?)
i was very very intrigued by what blod meant by receiving the powers of "old vampires" through the vampire's bequest; could this mean he's more sensitive to light again?
i'd also like to mention that within an ex and bee live, they mentioned about the formatting of future episodes; i talked about this with a friend a while ago, but i'd really like to see a visual novel sort of formatting; like you're watching a playthrough of the game and seeing the characters move with live2d... maybe i miss the obey me stories, but many of the listeners are westerners, and so are more watching ex and bee than just listening, so why not add that element into the creation of it; i wouldn't mind still images of the characters, but i found the.. blurred artwork in the background of translated dialogue nice! i wish we got more artwork and higher quality art references..
I'd like to see a few obey me voice actors make their appearances (though, i feel like if you added the entire cast into ex and be...idk. it just rubs me wrong. one of the main selling points is that they're being voiced by the obey me voice actors.. but even just one or two returning would be fine.) my predictions of returning vas - kazuya yamashita and yu hirata..why? because i don't know. i hope the have roles where they're able to show off a wider voice acting range, especially hirata-san - perhaps a deeper voice and more mature character would be a nice change especially befitting for the story!
[EDIT: I might be mentioned it before, but I don't really want ex and bee to "become" obey me; it is its own unique project, and whether it's by coincidence that ex and bee shares voice actors from the latter is really up for debate. that being said, I've changed my mind on my latter point. TLDR: they shouldn't really add any obey me voice actors to the project, but it's not like I would MIND if they did. (im the va superfan.. why would I mind more of my fav vas staring in another project???)]
TLDR: ex and bee is super cool.. i've got high hopes but i'm also terrified that such a project will be abandoned. let's hope solmare locks in and really wows fans with the coming season <33 this post was more so to stir discussion as we move closer to the end of march, and hopefully closer to an announcement!! if you like ex and bee, follow my side blog for more content adjacent to it <3 thank you so so much for listening to my rambles.

Here we go, the first proper chapter of the Saiki K manga, 1-1!
Tumblr media
Manga Saiki my beloved. How I missed you. I won’t comment on every single panel because I don’t want to spend —that— long talking about trivial things in this manga. But I’ll do my best to be annoyingly thorough in this re-read. Since I figure it will probably be my last proper re-read from end to end, sequentially. (Because quite frankly this manga is long. And I have other things to do. Hopefully.)
Tumblr media
I’m not sure “lax” is the word I would use here? But I don’t like the anime’s use of “airheaded” much either, so?? “Considerably low key” maybe? In any case, the next panel sums it up “They both were the type not to think that deeply about things.” Let’s see… it says かなり緩かった. That seems to be about right, translation wise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
incheresting.
Also, it implies hypothetical strict parents of psychics exist, which… ironically enough, simply doesn’t exist in the Saikiverse. Come on Asou sensei. Give us an official continuation so we can meet some new psychic kid who meets this requirement of having grown up with strict parents.
I love how the very first page shows Saiki committing some selfless act with his powers. And yet he still gives us the spiel about how much psychic powers suck with his signature chronic >:(. Yes; Saiki has been a tsundere since the very beginning.
Saiki’s tsundere-ism aside, I have always liked how Asou sensei explains how psychic powers might be a significant drawback as much as a strength. The metaphor of a domestic dog who is fed and therefore doesn’t have the skill to hunt for itself, and the spoiled child who is given everything and thus robbed of agency, are both particularly good ones. (The curry and spoons one just makes me think of Mob psycho. Do you think One sensei read Saiki k???)
Tumblr media
Saiki just lists all of his powers here. That certainly saves time. Though people who have already read the oneshots have the advantage of knowing exactly how these powers work (if we assume them properly canon.) There’s details about Saiki’s powers that get changed from the oneshots to the manga proper, like the timer on his spirit-body separation ability and his “clairvoyance” being called x-ray vision. Wait, no, that was the oneshot. Well, my point still stands.
Tumblr media
I also like this part about a sense of achievement being impossible for him, since everything is too easy. It’s rather depressing if you think about it too much. Saiki definitely doesn’t belong in the “normal” life role that he forces himself into. But given his alternatives (Allow himself to become a government lab rat and subject himself to experimentation? Become a worldwide celebrity who fixes the problems of the world and maintains peace, essentially becoming a human god?? hang out with his amoral genius older brother who hates him???) his attempts at normalcy are understandable. And very entertaining.
Tumblr media
No extreme emotions… I hope Asou sensei knew the can of worms he was opening by having Saiki say this. But I’m guessing he didn’t.
And the first of Kusuo’s problems in his titular disastrous life is the very normal problem of having to unlock the door for his father, who locked himself out of the house. But at this point, we the readers have no idea the extent of his powers and just how much his full potential is underutilized.
why doesn’t Kurumi have a job..? their mortgage is probably expensive and her son is an older teenager and fully capable of taking care of himself… i guess she just wants to be the doting mom for her son.
Tumblr media
Ah!? Is that where Saiki gets his standards for how he uses his powers? Makes sense.
Sigh. watching your parents wrestle while waxing eloquent about coffee jelly. Never change Saiki. (and he never does.) He is really making me crave coffee jelly.
Tumblr media
so cute.
Tumblr media
XD his father’s thoughts are so ~kawaii~. Teehee.
Tumblr media
Also, I never see anyone use forced telepathy in fics! More stuff that has so much damn potential… note to future me reading this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The word used here in the manga is “psi user.” Let’s see… In Japanese, it is 超能力者(chyounouryokusha). Exactly what I expected; the same term as used on the cover. And that’s the word he uses in the anime, too, but in the subtitles, it’s translated as simply “psychic.” For those wondering, he says: 見せてやろう…超能力者の力おな… ‼︎ I am too low level to properly translate this, but I’d say it’s something like, “I’ll show you… a psi user’s power!”
Our translators: “I shall show you… the power of a psi user…!” (and they keep the punctuation and spacing used in the original Japanese.)
Tumblr media
:,) He smiles… I love it when he smiles with the sparklies and the shine comes into his eyes. He doesn’t make this expression but a few meager times in the comic. And one of them is at the very end.
Tumblr media
Papa also has a temper?? Ugh. He’s such a spoiled child. I can’t blame Kusuo for being a brat when his dad is like that.
And then Kusuo immediately smashes every window in the house using his psi powers out of coffee jelly induced jealousy. Another turn of events that just doesn’t make sense in the anime!!!
The translator note at the end is very sweet. I feel lucky that such a good scan team took on Saiki k; they really put effort into it, even the untranslatable stuff.
Alrighty, (wii fit meditation announcer guy voice) that’s… the end. It took me the better part of four hours to read and touch type all of this on my smartphone. Time well spent. (though I really should have used my computer. No, actually I’d better not, or all of my posts are going to be the length of 0-6…)
end of 1-1💫

Tickle game idea: Stretch and Sketch
About
You are standing next to a wall. The game is that you choose 3 spots and there will be difficulty levels - easy, med, hard. Stretch to hold a paper high on the wall and sketch the assigned image before time runs out!
Rules
Select an image or theme to draw. You can use prompts like nature, animals, or abstract art for inspiration.
You have to pick 3 spots and difficulty level for the game to start.
After every 5 mins the ler will switch from spot 1 to 2 to 3 sequentially.
When spot 3 is finished being tickled and you finish sketching before that then you win.
If the 5 min timer for the last spot is up and the sketch is still unfinished then the game is lost.
If you lose you get to try again and you can play with different difficulty levels and spots of your choosing! :)
Difficulty level ideas
Easy - Simple images, lower stretch height, 2 mins per spot.
Medium - Higher stretch height, 5 mins per spot.
Hard - difficult image, Higher stretch height, 3 most ticklish spots, extra punishment for losing.

...Well, as someone who's been positive on AI image-gen tools, I will say a couple of things here. On one end, I feel like part of this is a cultural shift in how art culture online has largely been gentrified to push out small and beginning artists to the more polished, professional creators.
Like, look at the average skill of your everyday webcomic artist, or even the everyday sorts of online artists you see, and you'll notice the "floor" has gotten a lot higher, in a way that I'd say is dangerous for online art.
I think it probably has a lot to do with the increased centralization of the net onto social media and the way it's anonymized small creators as a part of a larger "feed," meaning they can't grow their own communities within their own spaces and get drowned out by higher profile stuff.
I think it's better we spend our energy countering that instead of going against AI, because in large part that's been going on without AI and it's what made it present itself as such a threat.
On the other end... AI image gen is not an instant-good-art button, you do have to work at it just like with any medium, whether it be with more analog tools like traditional photobashing or more technical but still fiddly and skill-requiring tools.
Like, I've seen enough of the stuff to get an idea of what constitutes high quality use of the medium and what's low-effort slop or the janky steps of a first-timer, most often actually being able to have a distinctive style and maintain continuity/lack of jank in sequential art, and the distinguishing factor as in most art is the amount of effort and skill one puts in.
Like, @therobotmonster is doing some of the best stuff I've seen with those tools, but most of what they apply to it comes from their background in the traditional/digital-traditional arts. Hell, their technique for making comics using AI images is literally a refinement of a technique they pioneered using parts of public domain comics!
@reachartwork does it less with traditional-adjacent methods due to chronic pain issues, but still does a lot with technical methods such as inpainting/outpainting and controlnets to add artistic intent, in a way that's often very fiddly and requires tweaking and skill!
Like, getting better at a medium always looks different dependent on the medium, but you can tell and it requires effort. Like, I look back at my older photomanips and cringe a little, that shows progress!
So if anyone's looking at AI image-gen as an easy street to artistic quality, sorry, you still gotta try to get good even if the path looks different.
And on the third side... well, if you don't have any physical disabilities preventing you doing so, you should try hand-drawn illustration anyway, because doing it's good in and of itself.
Like, if there's barriers like only having a mouse instead of a tablet and such, it's still worth finding a workaround, because while it looks different, those differences can still not only provide stuff other mediums can't, but even improve your skills in other mediums!
Like, I wasn't bluffing wrt @therobotmonster's traditional art background, he literally manually hand-recolors and hand-re-inks images, and that's something he can do because of that sort of skill!
ethics of making AI images aside, I do find a bit amusing the kinds of sob stories and mental gymnastics people make up to pretend like drawing is this super technical skill with an impossibly high barrier of entry when its like one of the first hobbies toddlers pick up
suddenly a lot of people think they got the next Lord of the Rings in their head but they were never able to turn their stories into anything tangible because the evil elitist artists are hogging all the talent and skill and they need a bajilion years of training or something as if one of the most popular manga and anime of the past decade wasn't made by a guy that draws like this

Save More Power This Holiday Season With These 5 Tips
The holiday season is a time of joy, togetherness, and festivities, but it also comes with increased energy and Newcastle solar demands. Decorative lights, heating systems, and extended use of appliances for holiday gatherings can quickly lead to higher utility bills. The good news is that with a few simple strategies, you can enjoy the season while saving energy and money. By being mindful of your energy consumption, you’ll not only cut costs but also contribute to a more sustainable holiday celebration.
Here are some practical tips to help you conserve energy this season without compromising the festive spirit.
Switch to Energy-Efficient Decorations
Holiday lights are a staple of the season, but traditional lighting options can consume a lot of electricity. Modern energy-efficient decorations, such as LED lights, use significantly less energy while still providing a vibrant display. LEDs are not only cost-effective but also safer, as they emit less heat and reduce the risk of fire hazards. To further save energy, set your decorations on timers to limit their operation to specific hours, such as the evening when they’re most visible. If you’re feeling creative, consider using reflective ornaments or mirrors to enhance the glow of your lights without needing to add more.
Upgrade Your Home’s Insulation
The holiday season often coincides with cooler temperatures, leading to an increased reliance on heating systems. Poor insulation can cause heat to escape, forcing your system to work harder and consume more energy. Upgrading insulation in key areas, such as attics, walls, and basements, can help maintain a consistent indoor temperature. Seal gaps around windows and doors with weatherstripping or caulking to prevent drafts. Installing thermal curtains can also add an extra layer of insulation, keeping your home warm and your energy bills in check. These upgrades not only help during the holidays but also offer long-term savings throughout the year.
Cook Strategically for Gatherings
Holiday meals are a cherished tradition, but preparing large feasts can be energy-intensive. To minimise energy usage, plan your cooking schedule carefully. Use the oven efficiently by baking multiple dishes simultaneously or sequentially while it’s still warm. Smaller appliances like slow cookers, air fryers, or pressure cookers can also be energy-saving alternatives for certain recipes. Prepping ingredients in advance allows for quicker cooking times and less energy use. After meals, reheat leftovers in a microwave rather than a conventional oven, as it uses less energy and takes less time. By cooking strategically, you can reduce waste and conserve energy while still delivering delicious holiday meals.
Unplug Devices When Not in Use
Phantom power, or standby energy usage, is a hidden drain on your electricity. Devices like phone chargers, coffee makers, televisions, and gaming consoles consume power even when turned off but still plugged in. To combat this, unplug devices when they’re not in use, or invest in smart power strips that automatically shut off power to inactive devices. Make this a holiday habit by unplugging rarely used items like decorative inflatables or certain appliances when they’re not needed. Over time, this simple action can lead to noticeable savings on your energy bill.
Invest in Smart Thermostats
Heating and cooling account for a significant portion of energy bills, particularly during the holiday season. A smart thermostat can help you manage your home’s temperature efficiently and reduce unnecessary energy use. These devices allow you to set schedules based on your daily routines, ensuring that your heating system only operates when needed. For instance, you can lower the temperature while you’re asleep or away from home and have it adjust to a comfortable level just before you return. Many smart thermostats also provide real-time energy usage data, helping you identify opportunities to save even more.
Saving energy during the holiday season doesn’t mean compromising on the joy and comfort of the festivities. By implementing these tips, you can reduce your energy consumption, lower utility bills, and contribute to a more sustainable celebration. From choosing energy-efficient decorations to cooking strategically and encouraging mindful habits among guests, every small change can make a big difference. As you enjoy the season, take pride in knowing that your efforts are helping to create a greener, more sustainable future. Celebrate with purpose and let your holiday cheer shine brightly, both in spirit and efficiency.

How Does an On Delay Timer Work and Why Do You Need It?
An on delay timer is a critical component in automation and control systems, ensuring smooth and sequential operations. But what exactly is it, and how does it enhance system functionality? Let’s dive into the details:
1. What is an On Delay Timer?
An on delay timer is a device designed to delay the activation of an electrical circuit for a predetermined time after the input signal is applied. It ensures that connected systems or devices operate only after the set delay.
2. How Does It Work?
Input Signal: When power is applied, the timer begins counting down the preset delay period.
Timing Action: During this countdown, the circuit remains open (inactive).
Output Signal: Once the delay period ends, the timer closes the circuit, allowing the connected device to function.
3. Why Use an On Delay Timer?

Selection of your embedded system’s software architecture
In an earlier blog post, we discussed the benefits and drawbacks of both RTOS and bare-metal architectures. Bare metal is simply defined as firmware development that takes place directly on your hardware, without any intermediary layers. However, does this imply that bare metal exclusively refers to firmware development in assembly? How about using memory-mapped registers directly in C development, with the aid of header files that contain macros for such addresses? Is that metal exposed? We can't always be certain how a C compiler will convert our code to machine code because C is a high-level language.
Why do vendor-provided HALs appear in C? That is an additional layer of abstraction. Why do schedulers have sequencers? Although the notion of bare metal is frequently ambiguous, many developers consider firmware development in C utilizing HAL to be bare metal. job preemptiness, or the capacity to allocate resources to a job with a higher priority, is the primary distinction between RTOS and everything that isn't RTOS. Since it's easy to get confused about what exactly constitutes bare metal, we'll talk about a few architectures in this piece that aren't RTOS but might be bare metal. Superloop is the most basic one that all embedded developers begin with.
1. Superloop
The simplest bare-metal strategy is Superloop. Code is executed on each iteration of the endless loop. The Arduino "loop" function is the most well-known example. The most popular method of managing the execution of individual functions is through the use of flags, which are typically set by interrupts. Superloops carry out instructions in a sequential fashion. Setting a flag from a timer ISR or determining how much time has passed since the last iteration are common methods for time control. We'll use a small piece of code to demonstrate how to take data from a sensor in the event that a GPIO interrupt is raised, process it, and send it to the server every ten seconds. Superloop quickly ends in spaghetti code. It can be difficult to detect and fix errors, modify the logic of an existing application, and add new capabilities. Despite its simplicity, superloop is still frequently used to develop quick proof-of-concept solutions with restricted capabilities. Because it is difficult to predict how long a single task will take to complete, it is not a good option for time-sensitive systems. Furthermore, no framework exists that can ensure the timely completion of higher-priority activities.
Tumblr media
One will begin to seek out more sophisticated solutions that are easier to manage and more adaptable for adding new features. A sequencer is the next step in the superloop's natural growth. We'll add tasks (function pointers) to a sequencer, which will then carry out those tasks, rather than designing logic that uses flags set in an ISR to control the execution of specific functions.
2. Sequencer
Sequencer is a straightforward design pattern that lets you add tasks that must be completed to the sequencer module. The sequencer will run indefinitely and complete the jobs that are accessible. The sequencer can receive tasks from internal (timer) or external interruptions. In order for the sequencer to execute the first available tasks with a greater priority, tasks can also be given a priority. To guarantee deterministic behavior, a watchdog is deployed to guarantee the task duration, and time-critical tasks must internally ensure execution time or call frequency using timers.
The code is simpler and cleaner, which is the first thing we notice from the above image. After the execution, there are no flags that need to be put in ISR and reset. A great illustration of bare-metal event-driven design is Sequencer. A sequencer can be implemented in a variety of ways; tasks can be added and defined during compile time with predetermined priority and indices, and they can be scheduled to execute during run time as required.
Tumblr media
3. Cooperative scheduler
A pattern that expands on the sequencer is called a cooperative scheduler. It is a hybrid of a virtual timer and a sequencer. Because it only permits one interrupt—a timer interrupt that serves as a tick for the entire system—it is more constrained in terms of timing needs. The developer also establishes an initial delay, following which tasks are scheduled to be completed at a predetermined period.
Tasks are carried out at predetermined intervals thanks to the cooperative scheduler. The firmware developer is still in charge of ensuring job duration and preventing task overlap, though. Ticks are created using a timer, and a data structure describing individual jobs is updated using the sch_update function. These structures include data members for counting the ticks and a function pointer for a task. Sch_dispatch is called from the super loop rather than the timer ISR to ensure updates of data structures describing tasks.
Tumblr media
4. When to choose bare-metal architectures and when to go with RTOS?
RTOS was briefly explained in a prior blog article. A preemptive scheduler is one of RTOS's primary parts. It is a component of RTOS that controls how tasks are carried out. Based on the tasks' current status and priority, the scheduler decides which one should be completed next. It is intended to offer deterministic task execution. This indicates that the tasks are completed on schedule and with predictable results.
An RTOS is typically a suitable fit for Internet of Things applications that make use of certain networking protocols. It is feasible to run application logic and networking stacks on bare metal event-driven systems. Writing discrete actions based on a ticker event is more difficult than defining an RTOS task and assuming it would continue indefinitely.
Though it's not always the case, an RTOS appears to be the recommended design for embedded systems. RTOS gives you the infrastructure to guarantee scalability and deterministic behavior, but it comes at the expense of using more resources. It needs a flash to hold the instructions and some RAM to keep things operating.
Navigating the intricacies of embedded system software architecture can be challenging, whether you're deciding between bare metal or RTOS, or optimizing a superloop-based design.
