it's all fun and games getting letters from watson until you make it to the three gables . what's interesting to me though is not the question of 'did doyle write this one' - i think it's sort of a fan's cop-out to suggest that because this story is so casually racist, it *can't* have been written by doyle. i think it's more worthwhile to look at the number of years between 'the yellow face' (the titular face refers to a blank mask worn by a little girl) - a very sympathetic and respectful, for its day, story, and 'gables' - 'face' was published in 1893 and 'gables' was published 33 years later, in 1926. and this is well into doyle's weirder years, after he's been into spiritualism and wwi has happened and he's old and strange. some of his stories from these years are very fun, and others are...less so. even saying 'sometimes people change and get worse as they age' isn't really it, because there's ugly things in the earlier stories too, just to a lesser degree and without such an obvious degree of humor taken in them. those you might be able to describe as 'a product of their time', an unconscious bias that is not appropriate but also not meant with a serious degree of ill will beyond cultural bigotry. gables is so racist it almost feels out of character, but saying that also feels like an excuse in a way that doesn't sit right with me. so there is no excuse for gables. no grander conspiracy. no justifiable explanation. it's not just unfortunate and distasteful. it's a shame.

hi i stumbled upon your The Works fan page (well actually I found it through a video but shhh) and i think its really cool. I wanted to suggest a vidya/movie you might dig. "COMPU MOVIE" By Osamu Sato and a bunch of other artists is pretty good. But heavy flashing lights/colors warning if you do check it out. If you've already seen it I'd love to know your favorite segment of Compu, personally mine was "Alphabetical Animals" ^_^

literally any time tronos madu is on screen. even after years, even if i've only watched this series through twice, lol. if i had to pick just one though…? 🤔 probably when he powers the cannon for aja? absolutely heartbroken he was voiced by danny trejo and thus his demise was contractually mandated. if i ever wrote a fic about 3below, i think it would be about him.

Gene for the character ask!

First impression: Okey dont judge me but I actually fall really fast for my Gene XD lit the episode that seal the deal for me was Spaghetti Western from season 1 so yeah it was almost love at first sight, love at first season

Impression now: I mean, they're my bean, my precious little baby, they are the sun that shine in my sky XD for real with every episode I fall a lil deeper They're just too precious for me

Favorite moment: This is a bit weird but it is his whole song for Courtney in the Gene and Courtney's Show but specially his line "Your heart is not broken is only growing" I have never had a romantic relationship I do not ship Gene x Courtney, why does this moment make me cry? that and the whole Stand by Gene episode

Idea for a story: Im terrible for this, but i don't have any idea like for an actual episode, I did wanted to try making a comic in which Gene want to put a play and have to asume the role of director, but struggle with not being able to properly work with others since she has such an informal and messy way of working, how if something seems to hard she just quite, how Gene deal with frustration and how she sometime takes it out on those who try to help her like her friends and family, but we have seen this in many episodes so is not a very original idea 😅

Unpopular opinion: I dont think I have any, I think all of us love Gene, think their amazing and that they totally need to be taken more seriousley by the avarege viewer and the crew. Maybe that's my unpopular opinion? for me the crew has contributed to Gene being taken as a least important character in the family, they have give her some deep episodes yeah, of course, but mostley they forgot about Gene, for example in the movie Gene has the least important plot of all. I know is hard with three kids, and Bob and Linda, but come on! (though I love Loren Bouchard and the whole crew, this is just me being pity)

Favorite relationship: ships aside, I actually love Gene's father/son relationship with Bob, I want as many episode with this two you can give me. And…as a lil surprise I would love to see Gene interact more with Jimmy Jr, I dont know why but I think they would be good for each other, artistically talking, they both struggle in the artistic medium they love, cause even if arts is "free" is still have to please the mayority (this is actually a main plot in the comic I am not making) And in the shipping department Galex 👍

Favorite headcanon: Im also terrible at headcanons so I just have dumb ones. The main one is, you know how Gene has composed many songs in the serie? well, for me, Gene compose the whole song "My Butt Has a Fever" and probably made the coreo too, Louise could have help a lil on the lyrics but is mostly an original Gene. That and Gene use belcro shoes…why? cause I used belcro shoes until i was like…16(?) I hate shoelaces and even now days i made that thing when you tie your shoes like looseley and you just dont untied it like never, how many shoes i have ruin? i dont care, I want for Gene to have the same problem cause i love her :D (does Gene being genderfluid is a headcanon? cause for me is a super canon thing)

Instead! Here's a fun reading list of the start of GOTG:

Annihilation: this is the true start of modern cosmic marvel and reintroduces characters like Star Lord, Gamora, Phyla Vell, Moondragon and Drax (all future members of GOTG). It's also just an utterly fantastic event story

Annihilation Conquest: the follow up to Annihilation, this has the Star Lord mini which features the proto GOTG and introduces Mantis, Rocket, Groot and Bug. Again it's another fantastic event story with a fun villain

Guardians of the Galaxy (2008): One of the team's best runs and the modern introduction. It works best if you have the added context of Annihilation and Conquest but you'll be able to get by reasonably well without them

Thanos Imperative: The end event for this era of cosmic marvel and this iteration of the GOTG

(Bonus) Nova (2007): I'd recommend this series like crazy it's one of Marvels most underrated books

There are ongoings from 2013 onwards however I'd have to recommend Guardians of the Galaxy (2020) by Al Ewing. It's the first GOTG to feel like a real continuation of GOTG2008 and Ewing manages to seamlessly blend that era of characterization with later... stuff by Bendis.

They do have an ongoing right now but it's just bad. I can't sugar-coat it it's just not an enjoyable time for anyone. I've seen it lambasted by both comic and MCU GOTG fans.... it's like apocalyptic if you're pissing off both

my favorite fic of yours - obviously the APPLE PIE doyoung timestamp u wrote me like at the beginning of our friendship /////j although that one regularly makes me extremely sad and tender and im not ashamed of it. my REAL answer is gravity!! i think it was so masterful how you bounced from past to present and for a fic that has like ... a LOT of introspection and vibes it kept me engaged the whole time. the prose was chefs kiss brilliant. there r still lines i think about and i LOVEE the central metaphor of the gravity that pulled yn/sunwoo tgt. and i felt like it was just so authentic of a conflict. it didnt feel contrived or immature--everything was well thought out and i really could empathize and understand with all of the characters!

8. what i like most ab ur writing - i feel like its really hard to pick one singular thing but i think one thing that stands out the most is how realized yn's inner world is. like its clearly really well conceived and i love how inspired their characters/motivations are!

11. ok my little pipe dream is that u write a fantasy or mystery fic....like i know we've been rolling the idea of a mythology au or something around but i think u would really excel at worldbuilding and the complex imagery needed for a non-real world fic!!! alternatively an e2l fic but i know u arent gnna write that one HAHA

"There's adrenaline, screaming, and a high potential for badass explosions," says Bumbercatch. "It's only that low on the list due to the lack of corrupt billionaires on this flight, and also the fact that I wasn't allowed to bring my flash bomb materials." The flight attendant makes a distressed noise and bustles off. "I'd rather there be no badass explosions," Colin says. "I'd rather there be lots've badass explosions," Jamie says.

idk if this is, like. Thee funniest dialogue i've ever written but it's my favorite from this particular wip so far! my favorite ever is probably in It's the Great Valentine's in May, Colin Hughes when the lads are at roy's flat discussing how best to assert dominance at a wedding bc i did NOT have the brain cell when writing that conversation it was pure crack.
