My Top TV Show Male Characters

I'm currently bored, so why not make a post dedicated to my favorite TV show male characters (I'll do a female one soon). I've been binge watching so many shows ever since last year when quarantine first started, I thought why not even though I'm sure nobody cares 😂 *in no particular order*

Matt Saracen (Friday Night Lights)

Sweet precious baby angel. Matt Saracen stole my heart the first time I watched FNL. He deserves the world and more.

Pacey Witter (Dawson's Creek)

An absolute lovable king that deserved better. He is the reason why I watched Dawson's Creek and will continue to rewatch it. Pacey is the blueprint. I know most loved him and Joey, but the way he was with Andie made my heart melt. He was the perfect boyfriend to her. Also Joshua Jackson has the best "heart eyes emoji" facial expression (as seen above lol)

Cappie (Greek)

Greek was a show on ABC Family years back. It wasn't the most popular show, but it is one of the best shows to come out of that network. So very underrated and Cappie is quite literally the best written character of all time. Sometimes writers will write a protagonist in a way that at times makes it hard to root for them (*cough* Dawson Leery) but Cappie is written perfectly.

Stiles Stilinski (Teen Wolf)

An absolute icon. Stiles was the reason why I watched the show to begin with. His sarcasm and humor made every episode worth watching. Dylan O'Brien is a natural and stole the show. He deserved an award for Void Stiles.

Seth Cohen (The O.C.)

Just recently started this show and I immediately loved Seth. I'm a sucker for curly haired brunettes. His sarcasm reminded me so much of Stiles. It's as if he was the blueprint for Stiles lol.

Nathan Scott (One Tree Hill)

I'm hardcore judging anyone that preferred Lucas Scott. This man is the reason why I have high expectations for relationships. Him and Haley >>>>>

Matty McKibben (Awkward)

My high school crush and favorite armpit smelling weirdo. It was always Team Matty. Lowkey deserved better than Jenna at the end (even though they're one of my fave couples)

8 JUICY DETAILS WE'VE LEARNED (SO FAR) FROM THE "GOSSIP GIRL" PODCAST "XOXO WITH JESSICA SZOHR"!

1. Ed Westick Almost Didn’t Play Chuck Bass

We can’t imagine "Gossip Girl" without Ed Westick; Chuck Bass simply would not be Chuck Bass without Ed! I mean, come on, can you imagine anyone else in that role? Well, neither could showrunner Josh Schwartz, who told Szohr that they were not sure if the British Ed was going to get a visa to work in the United States. The network was trying to make Josh pick a backup actor in case the visa did not come in, but Schwartz refused and kept putting it off because Ed was the only one he could see as Chuck. Luckily, Ed’s visa got approved the day before filming started. The story of how he got his visa is super chaotic, but don’t worry, we won’t spoil it so you can hear for yourself!

2. Taylor Momsen Was the First Actor Cast

Who knew Little J was the first to be cast out of all the characters?! "Gossip Girls" casting director David Rapaport shared with Szohr that Taylor Momsen, who played Jenny Humphrey, was the first they cast for the show.

3. The Network Didn’t Think Blake Lively Would Fit for Serena

David Rapaport went in depth with Szohr about the casting process and how, at first, the network thought Blake Lively was too "West Coast" to play an East Sider. However, Rapaport always saw Lively as the perfect Serena, which she was! And eventually the network did too!

4. Prior to "GG", Sebastian Stan and Chace Crawford Were Friends

Who knew that these two were besties before their time on "Gossip Girl"?! Chace Crawford, who played Nate Archibald, opened up to Szohr about his friendship with Sebastian Stan, who played Carter Baizen, from working together previously. Chace even went up to Josh Schwartz on set letting him know his buddy was coming out to audition.

5. Jessica Szohr Got The Role Because of a Pool Party

Jessica Szohr got the role of Vanessa thanks to a pool party she attended with Adam Brody. As we know, Adam Brody played the iconic Seth Cohen on "The OC", which was also created by "GG" showrunners Josh and Stephanie. Josh threw a pool party and Stephanie was there, when Adam dropped in with Jessica, and the two of them instantly knew she was Vanessa. What Jessica didn’t know is that she was basically auditioning for them the whole party. But can you imagine if she didn’t go to that party? Who would have played Vanessa?!

6. Chace and Ed Were Roommates

We have touched on this before, but it will just never get old! Chace and Ed were roommates for a few years at the beginning of the show. Chace recalls a funny story of going apartment hunting in New York with his mom, realizing how expensive everything was, then calling Ed up and asking if he wanted to live together. A roommate match made in heaven!

7. Nina Dobrev Auditioned to Play Young Lily Van Der Woodsen

What some might not know is that there was supposed to be a "Gossip Girl" spinoff focusing on a young Lily Van Der Woodsen and her sister Carol’s adventures in L.A. Season 2 Episode 24 “Valley Girls” served as an unofficial pilot episode where Brittany Snow played young Lily. But David Rapaport recalls being blown away by Nina Dobrev’s audition for the part. The only problem was, Dobrev didn’t look anything like Kelly Rutherford, who played Lily Van Der Woodsen. Soon after that, though, Dobrev scored the role of Elena Gilbert on "The Vampire Diaries", so no harm no foul.

8. To Audition, Kelly Rutherford Needed an Assistant to Hold Her Baby

Talk about a working mom! Kelly Rutherford showed up to her audition for "Gossip Girl" with her baby, and while she was in the room, an assistant for the show had to hold her baby. We bet that was a nice break for the assistant, though -- who doesn’t love to hold babies? Another thing you might not have known is, she was pregnant for part of Season 1 and gave birth in between Season 1 and 2. She told Szohr that being a mom in real like and coming on set and playing a mom was very special for her.

What are your thoughts on Ryan’s saviour complex? The show makes this his defining character trait, a virtue and a flaw. And I was thinking about your comment on how the writers struggle to write for Marissa outside of his orbit, this saviour complex basically defines Marissa too. Because she needs to be his foil as the girl who can’t be saved. And so she’s always trapped when it comes to her character development

I’m so glad you sent this in, Anon. This is such an excellent point. I honestly can’t expand on this any better than you’ve already written. If the writers really just saw Marissa as a cipher for Ryan’s issues, as we’ve been discussing, then how the writers conceived of Ryan directly impacts Marissa’s construction as a character. And Ryan’s defining characteristic is his savior complex—literally his first line to Sandy in the pilot is “Where’s my brother?” (Somehow I doubt it was Trey’s first line to his lawyer.) When Ryan and Marissa first see each other again in 1.02, and she thanks him for taking care of her the other night, he asks, “do you always drink like that?” Ryan Atwood is a self-appointed emotional and physical guardian. 

Significantly, I think, it’s only when you watch the show with some distance from the characters (as an adult or after rewatching approximately a hundred times as I have) do you realize just how emotionally unhealthy that behavior is, and how little the show problematizes it. The show made Ryan’s savior complex his defining trait, but I feel like they were only ever half-hearted in exploring how it actually affected his life, for better and for worse. Yeah, Ryan’s always trying to save people and that motivates nearly all of his actions, and very occasionally the show gets explicit about it. But I feel like if the show were done in 2020, in a profoundly changed television landscape (and maybe had a different showrunner), there would be a lot more nuanced focus on Ryan’s savior complex as a genuine emotional obstacle in his life, how he’s actively confronting it (or not), and how it affects his relationship with everyone else on the show. (Maybe S4 does this post-Marissa’s death, but as I have not seen that season in a literal decade, I cannot speak to it yet). 

This focus on feelings would also apply to everyone on the show, not just Ryan, because the show lays out some really rich emotional stories for everyone in the beginning. There’s Seth’s insecurity and the way he locks into Ryan because of it, Kirsten and her daddy issues, literally pick any issue Marissa has (her body, her mom, her relationship with Ryan)…hell, even Luke goes on this really interesting journey about his own conceptions of masculinity once his dad comes out. But over time, the emotional complexities that the show laid out in the first half of the first season got swept away in favor of more shallow writing, with drama for drama’s sake (with the exception of the S1 finale and a few other episodes, like The Proposal or The Goodbye Girl). 

This is one of the reasons why S1E13 The Best Chrismukkah Ever has strangely become one of my favorite episodes over time, because it’s an episode where everyone actually takes baby steps to healthier relationships with one another. Kirsten tells her dad she’s taking Christmas vacation.   Seth learns that there are consequences for his stringing along of Summer and Anna. Julie actually parents Marissa and insists she go to therapy (even Jimmy, the most useless parent ever, says she needs to go.) Marissa rages about this at first, but decides to go when Ryan communicates to her that he refuses to put up with her reckless behavior because it’s too traumatizing for him. And Ryan does not go with her to therapy, choosing instead to spend time with the Cohens, because he is Marissa’s boyfriend and not her parent. Of course, all these baby steps get reversed and the show forgets all these threads…but there’s an alternate timeline of the show (definitely without Oliver, or at least a more realistic version of him) where the emotional stakes of people’s lives actively remain at the heart of the show.

Now, if Marissa is the girl who could never be saved…her death is the ultimate example of that trope. At the same time...I doubt the writers were always intending to kill her off. So, I do wonder if the writers had other ideas about potential endings for the couple that were unhappy, to demonstrate the impossibility of saving Marissa. Certainly you’re right that she is just stuck in narrative purgatory because of how the writers conceived her...and the refusal to really dig into her non-Ryan relationships except as obstacles to her relationship with Ryan really highlights this central dimension of her story.

The Oc Pilot Review

I had nothing to do so I decided to start a new show- The OC. I had heard some things about it before, that it's about rich kids from Orange County in California that party and do stuff that I don't get to do right now because Corona said no. So it's basically the Californian version of Gossip Girl. Or Gossip Girl is the New York version of the OC, since The OC came out earlier. And since I love watching teens party, fight, stab each other's backs, socialize and go to school, which we here don't get to do in real life, I decided to check it out.

We open with a leather jacket wearing bad boy Ryan stealing a car and crashing it. Ryan kinda reminds me of both Jess Mariano and Steven Hyde at the same time. Somehow he doesn't go to jail for stealing and crashing the car, but his brother does and his lawyer, who kinda looks like Lorelai's boyfriend everyone forgot about Alex. He seems to like Ryan because he sees himself in him or something and gives him his number.

Then we get to see a glimpse of Ryan's homelife which is not great (again the Jess Mariano/Steven Hyde vibes) because his dad's in jail and his mom is living with someone who could be either an abusive boyfriend or an alcoholic freeloading brother (I can't tell). So Ryan runs away and calls the lawyer guy. He decided to take him in and let him move into the pool house, which is wife, who looks eerily similar to Lily van der Woodsen isn't too thrilled about.

Later, he does out to smoke and we get a meet cute between him and the girl next door Marissa and some of the cheesiest lines of dialogue I have ever seen:

"Who are you?"

"Whoever you want me to be."

Then they share a moment but get interrupted by Marissa's douchey boyfriend.

In the morning, Ryan meets Dave Rygalski, but here he's called Seth Cohen and is the lawyer's son. And apparently kind of a creep too. He named a boat after a girl he's never even talked to before. Joe Goldberg is that you?

His dad suggests that they all go to some fashion show fundraiser thing but Seth doesn't want to because: "There'll be my rich trust fund babies classmates that I hate, even though I'm basically just like them." Dan Humphrey is that you??

We also get a piece of information that apparently Seth's mom and Marissa's dad almost got married. I see a Lily&Rufus-esque plotline coming.

At the fashion show, Seth's crush Summer is seen wearing a God-ugly dress with even worse eyeshadow, but somehow Seth is all hearth-eyed for her??

Summer has a crush on Ryan and invites him to an afterparty and he invites Seth along. However, the party is nothing like on Gossip Girl. It's not fancy and glamorous, it's a messy teen rager. Seth and Ryan get into a fight and then Marissa's boyfriend and his friends join in and attack Ryan for no reason. I gotta say, the casting department did a good job finding just the douchiest looking guy there is for Marissa's boyfriend.

When Ryan and Seth get back to their pool house, Seth is passed out and Ryan sees Summer leaving a blacked out Marissa out on her driveway. What a good friend. So Ryan being a good guy, carries Marissa into the poolhouse.

The next morning, Marissa is gone and Seth's mom is pissed about her son suddenly drinking and getting into fights and immediately assumes it's Ryan's fault because of the whole poor family and criminal record thing. So she wants to kick Ryan out of the house but is a bit conflicted when she sees he made breakfast. Then she kicks him out anyway, but plot twist- Ryan has nowhere to go because his mom abandoned him! What now?

a bit awkward and bumbling, kinda always puts his foot in his mouth, but has really good intentions. Pure of heart, dumb of ass!!!!

when it came to the murders and the town lore . sid kinda was really removed from it all ? like , he found the whole thing a lil overdone and tiresome. He just minded his own business. don’t get him wrong, it was SAD what had happened, but he like . never felt like it super affected him. to him, it happened so long ago that he was kinda Unbothered.

growing up, sid was picked on quite a bit. he was basically the shy loser who kept his head down and didn’t say much. mumbled a lot. didn’t have a lot of friends, was always writing or scribbling away in the back of classrooms so most kids found him ‘weird’

loved music. music was his love, his life, his shawty his wife, u know ??? so yeah when he was writing, he was usually writing songs and scribbling away ideas or writing actual music

and that brings us to what happened after high school. Basically, him and a few of his friends started a high school punk band (think of like .. 5 seconds of summer / brockhampton), and sid was put as the lead singer . they all didn’t think anything about it, they just did it as fun. overnight, they skyrocketed

basically, they’re all 20-21 years old and wake up one day and their goofy youtube cover of them singing a song has blown up and they suddenly have all these fans and people wanting to manage them and see more of them

it didn’t slow down from there either. sid went from being a big total nobody, to a really well known guy. he moved out to LA with his band and suddenly they were touring, releasing albums, performing at sold out shows, going on all these late night shows. honestly, it was a whirlwind to say the least – especially bc all of these fans and stuff thought sid was suddenly some kind of ‘rock god’, and he’s like ‘pls im a loser who stumbles over most words offstage’

kinda has two persona’s now. Sexy screaming rock god on stage . .. shy , awkward, thoughtful boy offstage. most ppl are taken aback at how different he is when he isn’t performing

sid literally forgot alllll about misty hollow. He said .. c u losers later !!! it’s only recently, when he was interviewed for some journalism piece, and they were extremely interested to find out he was from THE misty hollow, and know his thoughts on the Killings. it kinda brought him back down to earth and he realised he hasn’t seen misty hollow in a long time, or knows whats going on there . it’s like , once he left misty hollow . . he literally forgot the place even existed.

SO HE’S BACK !!! after like .. . 5 years of being gone , he’s back back back, and is like . already reverting back to his high school self a little bc he feels the town hasn’t changed at all . he’s taken a break from music for a while to regather himself and Remind himself of where he came from.

Long distance friend: the opposite from childhood friend , in that sid and ur character stayed friends through him being in L.A and being a Famous Heartthrob and now after all these years, they get to reunite!

An ex: I love the angst, I love that maybe they never fell out of love, but things got too hard trying to do long distance, or maybe they broke up before he even became famous bc it just Didn’t Work between them, tbh idc !!! any exes!!! “Lost in Japan – Remix” – Okay, ya’ll know this one. But I’mmentioning it anyways since it pops up in the insta story of Alex jamming outto it pool side, a proud girlfriend hyped for her man.

“There’s No Way” by Lauv ft Julia Michaels – This songinspired the entire fic, tbh. It’s the definition of a Slow Burn song.

“American Girl” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – Only mentionedin passing, but Shawn and co realize at some point early in the European legthat if you play this song? Alex loses her fucking shit. Even if she’s having abad time, cranky, pissy, argumentative, what have you – this song gets her to shoutalong and dance like the happiest little bean on earth. So it becomes a runninggag for them to play it whenever possible, just to watch the only American chickin the bar go nuts.

“Free Fallin’” by Top Petty and the Heartbreakers (but alsohave the live John Mayer cover in mind) – As slightly established in the firstchapter, Alex is a huge Petty fan. In chapter six, this is the song Shawn isattempting to teach her on the guitar. The one she’s too impatient to learn andmakes him just play for her instead.

“Feels Great” – Cheat Codes ft Fetty Wap & CVBZ – I couldn’tthink of a better song for the “young crew” to be listening to during a heated pre-showping pong game in the green room. It’s just a fun fucking song about beingyoung. That’s all.

“Outta My Head” by Khalid ft John Mayer – This is the songAlex is mumbling in the elevator before everything…intensifies. No deep reason here, I just bet they’ve all beenlistening to Khalid’s new album a ton and that song is a bop. Oh, and I GUESSthe lyrics are kind of fitting…. Can youfeel the tension? You’ve got my attention, I know we’re just friends but I’drather be together.

“Power Over Me” by Dermot Kennedy – These are the lyrics Iuse in the opening of the second chapter and a song that definitely inspired my interms of Shawn’s feelings for Alex. Especially early on, when everything isstill completely unspoken. Honestly, Dermot’s music has inspired me A LOT whilewriting this fic, so check him out if you’re not familiar.

“Uh Huh” by Julia Michaels – First off, Julia is a QUEEN. Hervibe is something I picture for Alex so I listen to Julia a lot particularlywhen writing more deeply from Alex’s point of view. Hence using it as theopening lyrics for chapter three. This is definitely a song that demonstrateshow Alex’s mind and body are at odds over her feelings for Shawn.

“Lost” by Dermot Kennedy – Again, on a constant Dermot kick.His lyrics are so poetic and it’s impossible not to take inspiration from him.I used his lyrics to open chapter four and I think they perfectly describe theatmosphere of that night in Krakow. I particularly love the lyric “since thatnight the moon has never looked the same” which I think perfectly puts the wayShawn and Alex both feel after that turning point of a night, dancing oncobblestone streets in the moonlight. Yep. Lost in feels again.

Generally, it’s another song I’ve listened to a lot while writing Slow Burn.It seems fitting for two people that are used to being in control of themselvesand their emotions but losing that control and giving into one another.

alright, so. i already wrote this intro, but lost it because i have minus ten brains, and i’m going to be honest with you: it was a pretty good intro, and i’m a bit bummed about losing it, so i can’t promise that this one will be just as good rip.

ADOPTION, BIRTH, PARENTAL DEATH TWS. matilda was the first and only daughter of an american immigrant who got pregnant at the age of nineteen. she died giving birth, never even getting a chance to name the child, and since no one could figure anything out about tillie’s other parent, she was put into the wixen adoption system. she ended up being adopted by the longbottoms when she was 3 months old, and therefore never knew much of anything but the longbottoms when it came to family.

ADOPTION, GUILT TW. the thing is, there has never been a single doubt in tillie’s mind that neville and hannah are her real parents; the ones she loves and who love her. still, she can’t help but wonder sometimes. what if her biological mother had gotten the chance to raise her? did her other parent even knew she existed and decided never to get involved, or were they always completely unaware of her existence? with an overactive imagination like hers, thoughts like that and countless scenarios constantly made their way through tillie’s head, and it made her feel unbelievably guilty. she was a longbottom, through and through. still, there was always this little “what if” at the back of her mind. it didn’t make her love her parents and siblings any less, of course, but she felt guilt for even just wondering. those are feelings she’s never talked about to anyone, though. i’m not even sure she fully realizes how present they are within herself. (this is heavily inspired by someone i know, and makes me feel very emotional, so i might not write it out all that much in paras and what not, but i thought it was important to include it in her intro, as it does matter and is part of her character development!)

she wasn’t a quiet baby, and definitely didn’t turn into a quiet child. matilda was always loud, and always aching to be heard and listened to. she was babbling from a very young age, and started talking before the age of one. she wasn’t reciting proust by heart, of course, but she talked the way some two year olds did before the age of one. she just!!!!! ached to communicate so damn much, and got very frustrated when she didn’t know the right word to express herself, and since she was quick to anger, being misunderstood by people led to a lot of tantrums. all in all, she wasn’t an easy child, especially not as a toddler.

still, she was a charming and bold kid, and tended to attract positive attention. really, it was mostly around her parents and/or whoever was taking care of her at the moment that she could be a bit... difficult. she loved putting on little shows (though it was a GREAT idea not to call them “little” in front of her), and always tried to drag her friends and siblings into doing various performances with her, such as dancing, acting, singing, etc. she always made a bit production of it, too, and would ask any and every stranger that she would come upon in whatever environment she was in to come watch her shows.

matilda adored making up stories!!!! she loved reading, and loved inventing stories and games based off what she read, but even before she could read, she was making up stories and like!!!!! she had a very vivid imagination and would tell stories to any and everybody who would listen to her. she was such a good storyteller (for someone her age), that, um, at one point, she realized she could also lie pretty damn well. she started lying left and right, just for the hell of it, and that might have been the thing that got her into the most trouble with people, especially her parents. she still has difficulties not lying nowadays. she just......... loves making stuff up? she tries very hard not to, but it seems to be an urge that’s too strong to constantly resist.

she had a lot of energy, and sometimes when she didn’t get to let it out, she got moody and angry and not as fun as usual to be around. to counter that, her parents signed her up to muggle kickboxing classes, after a few failed attempts at team sports. tillie was a bit of a bossy kid, and she didn’t do well at team sports back when she was younger. luckily enough, she excelled at kickboxing, and absolutely adored it. later on, she even dabbled in some muggle martial arts, and though she never used her training in a real life situation (not until the inferi, at least), she loved knowing she had the ability to defend herself and/or other people. 

her relationship with her parents wasn’t always easy in her childhood (and her teenage years either, but we’ll get to that later), but she never doubted how much she loved them and how much they loved her. of course, that can be changed depending on the people who play neville and hannah, but yes! with her siblings, i feel like the relationship might have been a bit smoother? or at least, i definitely think that for younger siblings. older siblings, i don’t know. we’d have to plot it out, but............... tillie automatically goes angry emoji face at any semblance of authority so just someone two years older than her being “in charge” when she’s 10 and both her parents go out would make her the fight me emoji just out of principle eogiergjeirjgeoirjierjg. but like!!!!! my point is!!!!! tillie loves her family so damn much!!!!! would destroy the whole wide world for them, and like????? tillie loves the world!!!!! she’s quite disappointed in it, but she wants it to do better!!!!! and for them????? she’d destroy it!!!!!!!!

HOGWARTS YEARS

ok, but.......... i’d love for tillie to have made like....... a nemesis tm on her first hogwarts express ride to hogwarts. we could even make it into a REALLY slow burn enemies to lovers like?????? them always being nemesis and now being stuck in the same place in such a complicated situation??????? amazing!!!!!! i’d love if they were tillie’s opposite, too, but this isn’t my wanted connections page (which is linked below) so egoiergoiejrgijer. i’ll refrain from babbling on and on about it.

matilda longbottom being sorted into gryffindor was a surprise to like, absolutely no one who knew her. she was loud, brash, brave, courageous, etc. and it was like....... expected for her to end up there. thing is, personally, i think she had qualities of all the houses? imaginative & creative for ravenclaw, ambitious & driven for slytherin, and loyal & all for justice and what not for hufflepuff.

tillie was always one to cheer for the underdog, and so i bet that she first made friends with all the kids who seemed to have difficulty fitting in before she made friends with the rest tm. honestly, i’m picturing her having been pretty popular during her time at hogwarts? not in a “mean girls” way, but rather in the fact that a lot of people just...... liked her. of course, she had (and still has) pretty strong opinions and is not easily swayed in her convictions, so the people who disagreed with her might not have liked her all that much, but still. eoijgeriojgeiorjgeiorjgoierjg and like ofc other people disliked her too like she has a pretty strong personality so i think!!!!!! it’s like hate or love; there’s very little in the middle. which i think still fits within the popular thing, because, really, most people would at least have an opinion about her.

stood up to bullies a bit too intensely, and probably got in trouble for it. she didn’t give a sh*t about the fact that her dad was a teacher and she’d get in trouble at home as well as in school; she had no patience for people who picked on others, especially not people who had it more difficult than others. she saw things in black and white, and didn’t really get the whole “the bully might have had a super hard life too” side of things. if you did something bad, and didn’t apologize, then you were a bad person, and that was it. she’s a bit less, um, intense about her way of thinking nowadays, but not by that much ergoierjoigjeroigjerojger.

does not forgive easily, and never has. like, she saw someone steal a candy bar from another kid in her first year, and she still hasn’t forgiven them. she “hates” them and it’s eorigjeirojgoeirgjeoirgjer. she needs to relax a bit. which is funny, becausse generally she’s really chill, but there are some things that get her blood BOILING.

she couldn’t exactly do kickboxing at hogwarts, and so she became a reserve beater in her second year, before becoming a complete (tm) beater in her fourth year. she stopped after sixth year, though, and in her seventh year, she began a secret, not-so-sanctioned-by-hogwarts, Muggle Martial Arts & Other Fighting Techniques Club for people who wanted to either practice it, like her, or simply wanted to learn. would it have been sanctioned if she had asked? maybe. but she loved feeling like a rebel egoieroigjerjgoer.

probably came out as a lesbian in her fourth year. tillie liked girls, and she didn’t want to hide it. she’s always acted like she’s super confident, though, but in fact she’s kind of insecure when it comes to relationships? she’s scared of not being enough, and has always been. it’s eorgjeriojgeoijgerijo sad.

AFTER HOGWARTS

tillie had zero clues whatsoever about what she wanted to do after hogwarts. she hadn’t chosen her n.e.w.t. classes with any specific career in mind, and she kind of panicked the summer after her seventh year, clueless about what she was supposed to do. then, she decided to work for a year, and then travel for the next. she knew it wasn’t the most “valid” choice, long-term-wise, but it was what she wanted to do, and so she did it.

she worked for a year at flourish & blotts, which was quite challenging for someone who preferred debating and helping others to selling books, but she was somewhat of an avid reader, after all, and so she did enjoy the discounts and discussions that inevitably occured about books.

and then, she went on to travel. she decided that, having explored a bit of europe with friends and family in the past, she’d go to another continent. and, very maturely, she decided to choose by closing her eyes, spinning a globe around, and stopping it at random with her finger. that method led to her deciding to visit north america, central america & south america. she started in canada, and finished in brazil. on her way, she visited all the countries on the continent, though, of course, she stayed in some for longer than in others. her favourites were mbolivia, argentina & belize. she did also enjoy a couple of cities in canada and the usa as well, but those were more reminiscent of home, and didn’t make as much of an impact on her.

she, uh, sucked at keeping in touch with people back home when she was travelling, so that could definitely be a starting or middle point for a plot? i think she may have taken the time to stay in touch with people if she knew things were more difficult for them, but otherwise, she kind of didn’t feel the need to contact people every day or so. and whilst that worked for her, whether that worked or not with your chara(s), if they were the kind who’d have stayed in touch with her, is completely up to you.

she came back and was like!!!!!! this is boring!!!!!! she started working part-time as a clerk at the ministry of magic, and was like :( because she missed travelling and meeting new people and just!!!!! she felt like something was missing. finally, someone told her of a non-profit organization that helped wixen refugeess that had escaped muggle and wixen wars in other countries, and she was like :o and decided to try and help out! she became a part-time volunteer with them, and adored it. she didn’t know if she’d spend her life doing what she was doing, doing two part-time things, but at the moment, it worked for her. 

INFERI CRISIS

the reason why she only arrived at hogwarts in september, and towards the end of september at that? she was trying to save as many people as possible. tillie cannot stand seeing people suffer, and when she becomes passionate about something, it’s the one thing she thinks about, and well...... she got REALLY passionate about saving people. 

i don’t think she’s fully processed what is happening yet, to be honest. like, she gets it; she’s not unaware, but........ in a way, it still feels fake, somehow. i think it’s because she’s been on a huge adreline rush since it first started, and because she’s been focusing on others rather than herself. everything’s been happening so fast that the facts just...... haven’t had time to settle into her mind.

she decided to finally go to hogwarts because she missed the members of her family who she knew were most likely there, and she wanted to make sure they were okay. and after getting there, it felt like leaving just wasn’t an option. not when there were so many people she could help in one single place.

she decided to be a hunter because, whilst it’s not her absolute favourite thing to do in the whole wide world, she’s good at it and it doesn’t bother her to do it when necessary. thing is, she knows it’d be way harder for some other people to do it, and so she does it so that they don’t have to. she really, really respects animals and creatures, though, and so i get like? lowkey artemis vibes from this side of her?

When you meet Riley Goldstein, a picturesque childhood in a picturesque suburbia in Virginia is not what you would expect and yet it was exactly what she had. Born on the cusp of summer and fall, Rachel and Christopher were over the moon to have their daughter, Riley Hayes, born on August 31, 2000. Finally, a child to complete the perfect family unit. Maybe they had hoped for a boy despite what science said ( hence the name Riley & a full name for a boy they had prepared ) but, they had a daughter and for the first ten years of her life they pampered her greatly. Trips to the coast every summer to visit his side of the family where Riley was praised for being such a pretty, good girl, and what seemed like infinite love from her father was doled out as long as she was what he wanted her to be. The younger girl was cooperative, it was in her nature it seemed, because she loved seeing her parents happy with each other. As long as Riley stayed within the lines, stayed within Christopher’s lines at least, everything would be well. Even when Riley started to develop a few habits and interests that were off the wall, he brushed them aside as childhood obsessions. Never could he accept his family for what they were which is exactly why he left.

The ugly truth was, Riley was an accident and the picture painted had been a lie – not that Riley knew until then. While she knew they had gotten married young she’d never known how much exactly her mother had given up to be with her father. Rachel Hayes had left her family, forsaken her religion ( as Christopher was a very religious Christian man ), and moved from New York City into this suburbia all with the promise of a family. When Christopher left right before Riley entered middle school, Riley was forced to grow up and pick up the pieces of a broken lost woman who simply couldn’t find herself in the rubble that was the aftermath of her father leaving. 

As it was, Riley lived in a shitty town, full of shitty close minded people, full of shitty stores besides the 7/11 that had the best slushies and there were many days she just felt like total shit. She did her best to not stand out and she didn’t, she was a bit of a loner in school because at a young age she learned people left -- you could only rely on your own company to get you by. Riley became in engrossed in books, poetry, online communities, she became hungry for a life outside of her town but had no clue how to get there. When the time came to apply to colleges, she freaked out and decided that she was going to take a year off. Her self esteem couldn’t currently handle the rejections from colleges she had dreamed of attending ( though, Riley would’ve gotten in to a few had she tried -- that was the problem -- Riley didn’t often try out of fear ). For a year, she’d work, she’d be involved in her temple hours away in Bethesda when she got the chance, she’d live her life one day at a time while she figured out what to do with her life. She wasn’t special, she didn’t have any skills -- or so she thought. 

Why was Riley picked for Gallagher Academy? She was never the brightest at her school ( at least her grades didn’t show it, though her perfect SAT scores did ), she was never the most athletic ( despite going on runs everyday ), she was never the best at anything but there she was -- at college for people who were all gifted. Truthfully, she’s overwhelmed, she’s cautious, she’s scared, but sometimes she looks around and maybe thinks this might’ve been where she was meant to be. Riley is the perfect spy because she knows how to be invisible, she watches people, when she’s not trying to drown her brain in alcohol, weed or cigarettes, she’s sharp and is able to point out trends, her journals and diaries full of notes about people, how they tick, their little quirks, her observations. You’re able to forget she’s there and she’s able handle herself in high stress situations when it comes down to it. Gallagher Academy saw a girl who COULD reach her potential but didn’t know how, they saw a nobody with barely any family or friends who they could mold, they saw a girl who needed the right push to be someone great. Her biggest hurdle? How she sees herself, how she views the world and her place in it.

did track and field in school and was honestly REALLY good at long distance running, could’ve been the best, but she just didnt want that kind of recognition or attention
