Tumblr media Tumblr media
Loustat Family
Members: Lestat de lioncourt, Louis de point du lac, Claudia
Propaganda:
"LOUSTAT ARE THEEEEEEE TOXIC COUPLE OF A CENTURY. LESTAT IS A MONSTER AND LOUIS IS TRYING TO KILL HIM ALL THE TIME AND CLAUDIA AGREES. like this is just what HAPPENS when you are immortal and locked in a loveless marriage but the dick is bomb and then your man babytraps you with a vampire child who is developmentally stuck as a child. It gets weird." "They're vampires and they hate eachother and they love each other and they try to kill eachother"
The Samtheon
Members: Samothes, Samol, Samot, Severea, Galenica, and Maelgwyn
Propaganda:
"Well, Maelgwyn killed his father and then was so regretful over killing his father that he then TURNED INTO his father, and I think that's all the propaganda that you need. Also, Samot and Samothes had a really messy divorce that resulted in war, and history being rewritten, and also Maelgwyn killing Samothes as detailed above."

AUSTIN: [...] And to some degree, you sense that there is a divine spark in you. And that maybe one, maybe your choice, your like- sorry, your abilities come from a sam- a similar spark in Severea and Galenica that brought Maelgwyn into the world. If not, you know- if not a lack of confidence, it is- or a desire for confidence, maybe it was a desire for the sort of intense and radical devotion to change that you carry that they cannot, you know? They are the most like, ‘we just have to keep things together.’ Galenica and- and Severea for years were just like- just gonna keep on stitching this same plain shut over and over and over again. And then someone like you was born, and you were given these powers from them. And I think you sense a little echo of that here as you see that you- you almost do that to these frogs, making- making them carry your dejection as they hop through the vineyard. (Spring in Hieron 30: A Safer Second)
I've seen it mentioned a lot but had forgotten where the "divine spark" thing comes from..... really good scene. I also forgot about these frogs carrying a small sadness for the rest of their small lives .

When I was drawing the wooden frames for the stream I was originally going to do the whole pantheon but wasn’t really liking anything I could come up with for Severea Galenica and Tristero, so to explain their absence the backstory is they’re trim Maelgwyn made for Samol’s house for a gift

samsam gender thoughts
making a separate post rather than appending this to lrb in tags because this is is extremely unrelated to the actual real issues op is talking about, but the assumption about what genitals trans people have is something i think about a lot while trying to figure out how to tag my samsam gender headcanons on ao3 lol
in the end i generally tag my fics as 'trans samot' because i write him with a pussy and t-dick usually, and that-- or guys with phallo/meta-- is what the 'trans male character' tag generally seems to be used for. so while i headcanon samothes as equally trans, because i present him in a way that is indistinguishable from him having 'cis male anatomy' (apart from drawing him with symbolic top surgery scars sometimes) i don't feel justified in tagging him as trans also.
it's a little complicated because they're gods! samothes in canon is a self-crafted archetype of masculinity-- flawed and human in his personal realisation of that identity, but he did give himself that Artificer-Divine Patented Gender Affirming Surgery and forged his idealised body in a volcano at the dawn of time. this is as much of a conscious performance as samot's shapeshifting is; samothes defines himself by his identity as an unchanging paternal bastion, a caretaker, a man ingenious enough to perfect himself without input or influence (that last point is where he differs from galenica in the samsam and severea/galenica parallel. but thats another post)
meanwhile, samot is a being who took his selfhood from severea and still holds a great deal of embodied admiration for her-- he also very clearly holds samothes' gender as aspirational, but takes pleasure in subverting it even when he pays worship to it, which is one reason why i think he flaunts a disregard for gendered bodily norms as often as he can. because of the specifics of his and samothes' history, i think samot's relationship to being a man is inextricable from his (fraught but inescapable) relationship with godhood and kingship. i really don't think of him as 'afab', nor samothes as 'amab' at alll (samothes made the M. originated it. samot stole the F from severea, he wasnt assigned anything..) but i havent been too effective in communicating this in fic
in the end, samsam's contrasting relationship to gender for me is less a dichotomy between cis and trans (or masc and fem, which in some ways they are) than a juxtaposition between static and dynamic modes of self-definition that obviously plays out elsewhere in their story. i just think it is fun to think about but i feel like i often fall short of communicating it in stories where it isnt the focus.... you are free to ignore all this and think i have just given samot the same non-op trans man anatomy that i have myself because i find it sexy.
maybe one day i will write a fic that more explicitly addresses this and then will feel justified in tagging them both as trans going forward

I know he's named Maelgwyn because he was created in a game of The Quiet Year and wasn't thought up as one of the Samtheon, but like, this child, this spark, ingenuity alive having a name, an identity so distinct from his family, it sounds so different than even Severea and Galenica, and what happens to him?
He becomes Samothes.

Round One
The Samtheon (Friends at the Table - Seasons of Hieron) VS the Shijimas (Kamen Rider Drive)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Samtheon
Members: Samothes, Samol, Samot, Severea, Galenica, and Maelgwyn
Propaganda:
"Well, Maelgwyn killed his father and then was so regretful over killing his father that he then TURNED INTO his father, and I think that's all the propaganda that you need. Also, Samot and Samothes had a really messy divorce that resulted in war, and history being rewritten, and also Maelgwyn killing Samothes as detailed above."
The Shijimas
Members: Banno Tenjuro, Kiriko Shijima, Gou Shijima, and the Roidmudes
Propaganda:
"Banno Tenjuro abandoned his wife and kids so that he could create the Roidmudes - a race of constantly evolving mutant robot monsters. The Roidmudes are lead by Heart, Brain and Medic who murdered Banno. Banno forces Heart to take on the appearance of a finance investor that upset him so that he may physically abuse him as a form of stress relief. When the Roidmudes turn out to not be particularly violent by default, Banno starts manipulating their programing. Heart leads the other Roidmudes to kill Banno and attempt to gain freedom. Kiriko and Gou (and some other guy that's not that important atm) take it upon themselves to 'deal' with the Roidmudes. The entire show is just 110 abused children of the same crazy guy (and 2 future brother in laws) fighting each other until they decide to team up AGAINST Banno."

Fifth set of Hieron tarot cards, 16-19! Click here to see the rest.
The Star card is possibly my favorite I’ve done, although I’m also fond of Death and The Emperor. I guess I just like drawing gods ghjdsf. The Tower is referencing the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck (as are The Hanged Man and Fool) while its colors are picked directly from the Spring in Hieron cover art.
[I/D:
Image 1: The first card, 16, The Tower, depicts one of the towers of the Last University, made of cream colored brick and a dark red roof. The greenery of the Spring is exploding from its windows, while next to it, the purple fire of the Heat and the Dark erupts from a crack in the ground. Star lightning strikes its roof. It’s an otherwise beautiful day.
Image 2: The second card, 17, The Star, depicts Samot from the shoulders up. He is a white man with wavy, shoulder-length blond hair. He’s wearing a dark blue chiton and lots of golden jewelry. In one hand he holds a shooting star, while more stars fall behind him against a dark blue background.
The third card, 18, The Moons, depicts Severea and Galenica from the chest up. Galenica is a figure formed from angular dark grey stone with firey orange eyes. Severea is a brown skinned bald woman with teal fins for ears wearing a bright turquoise turtleneck, her head turned to the side. Behind the both of them are the moons. Galenica’s moon is rocky and orange and falling to fragments, while Severea’s is turquoise and gaseous.
The fourth card, 19, The Sun, depicts Hadrian from the waist up. He is a middle-aged black man with short curly dark hair and a thick beard. His face is scarred. He wears a silver chest plate with a golden circle on it and a white fur cloak. He’s looking down at his hands where he holds a simple golden crown with a circle wrought into it. Behind him is a blue sky with white clouds and a simplified depiction of the sun.
End I/D]

Gods of Hieron, Ranked by How Much I Respect Them Going Into Winter
1. Adelaide
Is she actually a god? It’s still not clear to me where on the scale of godliness she is. I’m gay and I love her, though, so she can have the top spot.
2. Galenica
Said no thank you to both the gender binary and the nonsense going on with the rest of the Samtheon. Being made of rocks was a bold choice, but who hasn’t wanted to escape the confines of flesh.
3. Severea
Got killed and then unkilled by Samot, but she was a cool wolf in the middle there, which earns her some points back. Her tower was messed up but as far as I can tell her only mistake was giving her nephew the key and letting him store Maelgwyn’s weird crown and mask there.
4. Samol
He’s trying, probably. He did turn into a sea monster and rampage through town twice but we all have days like that. His willingness to insult the PCs brings me joy.
5. Tristero
He committed to his hobbies, and that’s about all I can say for him. The rules to the Nacre curse seem ill thought out. I realized as I was writing this that I always picture him as Xibalba from Book of Life, which is almost enough to move him up a spot.
6. Samot
I don’t understand a single decision this man has made. He killed a faithful pala-din for a man who blocked his god-phone-number like a week after Samot started calling. He has cool domains but those can only carry him so far.
7. Samothes
I can’t remember anything he did in the Quiet Year other than the fish rocks, which were baffling enough to distract me any time his projects came up. He did at least abandon the nihilism thing but he did so without telling anyone, including the person his plan rested on, then acted shocked when it didn’t work.
8. Maelgwyn
Murdering his father based on some nerd’s theology headcanon wasn’t weird enough for him, so he did it while wearing a mask that looked like his other father. Judging by vague maybe-spoilers I’ve seen he manages to get even worse in Winter, somehow. Someone save him from himself.
