SO - I’m going to subvert it a little bit and share ten of my favorite classic musical memes, the vast majority of which are old enough to be classified as “viral videos,” AKA “historical artifacts.” Almost none of them are safe for work. 

The Rubberbandits, “Horse Outside” (2010) - a criminally-catchy little Irish ditty about the best means of transportation to ensure a wedding hookup. 

Peaches x Miss Piggy (Lindsey Scoggins), “Fuck the Pain Away” (2008) - Peaches’ electroclash hit over Muppets footage. It works, trust me. (Consider also: the Muppets sing the Sex Pistols’ “Friggin' in the Riggin’”, and/or Cookie Monster sings Tom Waits)

“Under the Booty” (2012) - a divinely-inspired, seamless, life-changing mash-up of Bubba Sparxxx’s “Booty Booty Booty” and “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid.  "Christian Side Hug” (2009) - this video is ear cancer and the purest Poe’s Law manifestation of megachurch pop culture that I can think of. It makes me furious from the first second and it only gets worse from there. I hope you enjoy it.  Kelly (Liam Kyle Sullivan), “You Can’t Text Message Breakup” (2009) - This is the less well-known cousin of “Shoes,” but I’ve always ended up quoting this one a lot more often, whether it’s the titular message, the hilarity of “sex is for...married people” or “have a shot of whiskey, honey, makes you feel better.” (The phones in this one make it feel particularly like an artifact.) 

Electric Six, “Danger! High Voltage” (c. 2002) - again, “Gay Bar” is the better-known Electric Six song, but this one is just as gorgeously weird and fabulously catchy. (Yes, that’s Jack White singing with them.)

Neil Cicierega, “Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny” (2005) - hey, remember when the Internet was obsessed with Chuck Norris? This video is a fruit salad of catchy pop culture references.  the all-Bush edit of Sunday Bloody Sunday (c. 2005) - there’s something about the cadence of this one that makes it stick in my head...not to mention the juxtaposition between message and speaker. It’s Good to Be In DC (2004), which has aged EXTREMELY poorly, and thus I include it as a gauge of where viral videos were FOURTEEN years ago (and also because it launched a truly cracktastic political RPF community back on LiveJournal). 

He-Man x 4 Non-Blondes (Slackcircus), “Fabulous Secret Powers” aka “What’s Going On?” (c. 2006?) - a legitimately amazing cover of the original, which I cannot sing anymore without including Skeletor’s “myahhh!” at the right part. I also tend to quote the very last line at any given birthday party. Finally - note the AIM joke at about 2 minutes in.
