Sexypink - RITES, RITUALS, MEMORIES AND MORE CROP OVER VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION OPENS THURSDAY. Barbados Today News. “The first event produced by the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) for Crop Over 2023 starts next week and runs throughout the Season of Emancipation. On Africa Day, Thursday, May 25, 2023, the NCF will host the official opening of the Central Bank of Barbados Crop Over Visual Arts Exhibition entitled We Came on Merchant Ships. The following day, Friday, May 26, the three-part exhibition will then be open for public viewing at the Queen’s Park Gallery until Thursday, June 22.The series of exhibitions seek to visually explore the concept of the necessity of trade for growth and expansion and all the consequences, rewards and challenges that come from migration, free, forced or otherwise. The first exhibition, We Came on Merchant Ships – Movement, examines movement in its many forms. The works of 29 artists will be on show.

The exhibition captures the reason people move, modalities for movement and the various cultural manifestations of migration - forced and free. Special emphasis will be placed on the transatlantic slave trade.NCF’s Curator Oneka Small admits that although the topic is a tough one to approach, the Foundation was excited to showcase such a serious yet sensitive project using art. “Curating this one has not been an easy task simply because it is a painful period in our history, especially the show, which focuses a lot on the transatlantic slave trade. So we are very excited though to be presenting the information through multimedia presentations such as photography,” she said. She added: “We have digital work. We also have sculptures.

Some amazing pieces by amazing artists. We want to keep them under wraps so that you come excited on Friday, May 26, to see the show. It is a mixed medium, multimedia, all genre show. We are very happy to be presenting such a show this year.”Small is curating the exhibition alongside colleague NCF’s Visual Arts Officer Rodney Ifill, who commended the artists for stepping up and exploring the topic. “We have 29 wonderful artists. We have so many artists on the island and I am glad that they responded to the theme because the whole idea of introducing themes like this is to get people to think, to research and then you become better for it. At the end of the day, you are now collecting a pool of knowledge that you would have gone away with in terms of your own personal interrogation and presenting your sensibility to the public,” he noted. The second exhibition, We Came on Merchant Ships – Memories and Identity, which runs from Friday, June 30, to Thursday, July 27, the artists seek to interrogate the intangible aspects of trade.

How do memories express themselves in displaced people? How is identity maintained, retained, or assimilated within the new land of settlement? The third exhibition, We Came of Merchant Ships – Rites, Ritual and Religion running from Friday, August 4 to Thursday, August 31 will see artists visually explore the continuation of rites, rituals and religion from the lands from which the present people of Barbados originated, for example, the Spiritual Baptist, Christianity and the rise of traditional African religions such as the practice of Yoruba, Hindu and other faiths. For more information on details relating to the Exhibition, please contact Oneka Small via email at [email protected] and Rodney Ifill Visual Arts Officer via email at rodney-ifill@ncf. bb (PR)”

Sexypink - “A Suh It Guh”, a photographic retrospective of Marina Burnel, a Kingston-based French photographer whose work is inspired by the city and the people who call it home.  Far away from her home in Normandy, the overt sensory overload of Kingston’s concentrated culture inspires her philanthropic and artistic manifestations.  Idealising her raw and natural aesthetic, she deviates from the traditional, displaying her works on aged zinc, wood, and clay, exploring beauty through the broken. This retrospective showcases the past eight years of her journey through Kingston.
She explores the complexities of modern Jamaican society with the backdrop of a rich world influencing culture. What better place to enjoy this journey than through the Kingston Railway Terminus, which was built in 1845 and continues its very own journey into the 21st century.
This show is presented in association with the Jamaica Railway Corporation at The Kingston Railway Terminus located at 142 Barry Street.
This event is free and open to the public Saturday June 10 and Sunday June 11 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Secure parking is available at the station.

Bianca Peake  Fine Artist / Illustrator
Tumblr media
When I first saw the work of Bianca Peake i was pleasantly struck by her colour palette, use of text and Caribbean popular culture imagery. She was interviewed by Designer on an Island. Do check it out here (http://designerisland.com/stories/claming-space) and I have chosen to begin the year with her wonderful work. - Sexypink
Tumblr media
Bianca Peake, born Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, is an artist who works between the worlds of traditional painting and digital. Her work aims to guide her come to terms with what it means to female, specifically through the confines of a post colonial West Indian society. In particular Bianca explores these themes through the scope of the both artist's own experiences and environments she grew up in and that of the women close to her. The main focal points of the work are of female figures occupying the space of the canvas either alone or interacting with one another. She also makes use of seemingly banal cultural objects and symbols that ground the created environments in this particular time and space within the Caribbean while still maintaining a fragmented structure. This fragmentation is result of her way of working which frequently consists of jumps between digital and physical space as well as using stencils, and the artists own photographs.
Tumblr media
Pop culture references such as consumer goods, lotto signage and event signage as well as colonial architecture are frequently used. The use of text and signage directly allude to. Bianca casts a near voyeuristic view of her subjects at as a comment on the fact that the idea of a "female" gaze is still rooted through a male one. The moments she captures are often intimate ones, not so much as public displays but stolen moments of friends.
While making work within the UK for an extended period, she has maintained it is of utmost importance to make work that speaks to the post colonial Caribbean experience even if it is not displayed in that space.

Karen McLean
White Shadows: Presence and Resistance – 2015
The Caribbean remains textured by the unresolved events of the past. Themes of colonialism and the implications of modern Western cultural hegemony, are inherent in the historical processes that continue to affect human constructs.
In this most recent piece I have been looking at the historical trajectory of the Chattel House; a mobile home that evolved from the sugar plantations of Barbados, and one that has become a symbol of the character of the population.
Made from Tate and Lyle sugar the sculptures are replicas of a Chattel house that mimics the Georgian architecture that is common on the island. Based on Homi Bhabba’s essay ‘Of Mimicry and Man’ the forms all begin as identical little chattel houses. However as the elements affect them they metamorphosize and evolve into “Hybrids” expressing the conflicts and tensions inherent in post colonialism.
