Akutagawa’s life, short as it’s been, is full of violence and cruelty. 

Life in Suribachi City is an exercise in survival that stops for no one, not even children. If anything, Akutagawa thinks it’s worse for a child; there’s no protection and plenty of people willing to take out their own anger and pain by inflicting it on someone who can’t fight back.

Akutagawa can fight back. Sometimes he does, when he’s certain that it can’t be brought back onto his sister and the others. Other times, when retribution would be swift, he doesn’t and instead closes off, used to it. He’s used to the violence. 

The small arms of another child wrapping around him in a hug isn’t something he’s used to. Only the thought that it might be his sister stops him from attacking or at least shrugging the person off. A backward glance makes him frown; it’s the other boy. He thinks about throwing him off anyway but doesn’t. There’s no point to it, Ristu is too persistent.
