Dinner had been good—the two of them tucked away in the corner of a steakhouse out in the suburbs, playing at anonymity despite the eyes that glanced over at them periodically. Sid hadn’t touched him in any way that couldn’t be explained away as two teammates sharing a meal and talking about the season so far, the games still to come, before parting ways for bye week, but Zhenya knew, with every brush of Sid’s hand, with the weight of his regard, what it all really meant.

Zhenya, like every other young knothead on the team, had spent his first season for Metallurg worrying about his genetics panels and his physical examinations. He’d passed his exams with flying colors. He’d been highly ranked on the prospective sire list. Metallurg had received inquiries from six different countries about buying a share of Zhenya's breeding rights. Zhenya had refused to sign the release forms. The most valuable alphas agree to exclusive contracts, like Pittsburgh had offered him.

Sid was not let into the Russian team’s locker room. Geno had to come retrieve him. Her jersey was gone, as were her chest protector and elbow pads. She grabbed him by the collar of his Team Canada jacket, pulled him face-first into her sports bra, and then dragged him into the locker room. Geno and the Russian Women's National Hockey team win gold. Sid is an unexpected prize.
