Long story short, we had a fantastic night at the Nectar Lounge Friday night, our first Little Lies concert of 2023.
Of course we had a fantastic night. We love this band.
It was, though, a bigger deal this time around. It was the band's tribute to and send-off of Christine McVie who passed away at the end of last November. So the band not only performed their set of Fleetwood Mac classics, they devoted their second set to songs by Christine McVie featuring a Who's Who of local vocalists and one serious guitar shredder.
Molly Sides.
Shaina Shepherd.
Kim West.
Kate Dinsmore.
Jen Ayers.
And Kathy Moore.
Now the first thing that hit us about experiencing all these lead singers, one after the other on the same stage, is that we've had this experience before. It was the Rock Vault show in Las Vegas where lead singers and musicians from various classic rock bands perform songs by their own and other bands of the era. My point, though, is we similarly experienced a number of lead vocalists at that show. We observed how they present themselves and how they engage audiences. We got to compare personalities and styles and how we responded to each of them.
The same was true for us Friday night. Each lead vocalist's talent and skill is beyond question, of course. It's in the how of how they employed their talent and skill on-stage that sets each apart. It was a bit of a Master Class in fronting a rock band.
It was also an incredible and unique experience. And a genuine delight.
The second thing that hit us was how much fun everyone was having up there on stage. How much they genuinely embraced the experience.
This is not a small point, by the way. Because there's a joy in these songs, however classic they are. However much personal chaos produced them way back when. There is joy here. And The Little Lies experienced every last ounce of it.
And because they did...
We did.
And that is a gift, my friends.
The third thing that hit us, the last thing, actually, were the thoughtful moments in service of Christine McVie's memory.
To begin the tribute, Miranda Zickler read the words Stevie Nicks penned to her best friend, McVie, shortly after McVie's death.
In her note, Nicks writes: "one song has been swirling around in my head, over and over and over. I thought I might possibly get to sing it to her and so, I’m singing it to her now. I always knew I would need these words one day.”
The name of the song is "Hallelujah" by the band, Haim. Zickler and fellow Little Lies bandmate, Linzy Collins, then performed the song for the audience at the Nectar Lounge.
The lyrics, as Nicks suggests, are perfection to the moment.
From the third verse:
"I had a best friend but she has come to pass / One I wish I could see now / You always remind me that memories will last / These arms reach out / You were there to protect me like a shield / Long hair, running with me through the field / Everywhere, you’ve been with me all along,”
It was a superbly touching moment, a moment of solace and reflection, a moment of appreciation and remembrance, bringing us together in a public farewell which was then followed by guest vocalist after guest vocalist celebrating the music, songs, and performances of Christine McVie.
It was a big night. An important night. A letting go and a full embrace of a classic rock icon.
A heartfelt celebration.
Brought to life by The Little Lies... their friends on-stage...
And the fans of this music who came down to the Nectar Lounge one night in January to celebrate with them.
I saw 10 of the new shows this year (3 Revivals and 7 New Musicals). So I decided to rate and rank them:
1 - Suffs 10/10 - What an incredible show! Such a talented cast and I want the soundtrack immediately! I had tears streaming down my face at the end of both acts. Shaina Taub and Hannah Cruz are particularly great. And Grace McLean as Pres Wilson is hilarious. The set is excellently done to evoke the locales and move things along. Strong direction all the way. My pick for Best Musical.
2 - Water For Elephants 9.5/10 - amazing cast; should get an award for ensemble; nice use of puppets - Rosie reveal was perfect. Grant was incredible as was August. Went up in rank as the week went on because the music really stuck with me and I wanted to hear it again.
3 - Outsiders 9//10 - loved the choreo. Ponyboy is great. The gravel stage and flashlights were particularly effective. Best lighting design and use of rain
4 - Merrily We Roll Along 8.5/10 - was slightly concerned by Groff’s flat affect in first scene until it became clear it was a choice as he became more vibrant as time moved back. Daniel was perfect and the friendship between the 3 leads really came through. His Franklin Shepherd Inc is worth the Tony on its own. I can only assume I was supposed to hate Gussie because I totally did.
5 - Cabaret 8/10 - confession: I had never seen Cabaret in any form and I didn’t research the plot so I had no idea what was happening between the KitKat numbers. Really good production- excellent staging, never felt left out in the round. Eddie Redmayne was creepily intriguing. Sally seemed more broken than I would have thought from hearing songs from previous productions. Dark and moody; not a huge fan of the immersive preshow. No program pic bc they covered all phone cameras with stickers on the way in (before giving us a shot of really bad schnapps)
6 - The Wiz 8/10 - bright and fun! Excellent performances especially the 4 leads. LOVE the Lion. Costumes are gorgeous and the dancing is fabulous. Does Wayne Brady have to be there the whole show since he’s not on til Act 2?
7 - Gatsby 8/10 - bubbly and fun; loved the opulence of set & costumes; great dancing and some really good songs; loved Jeremy Jordan’s Gatsby - the insecurities coming through the glam
8 - Notebook 7.5/10 - Heartbreaking performance by Old Allie especially. What is with that water on stage this year?
9 - Hells Kitchen 7/10 - great dancing. Lead actress was great but maybe im too old to identify with her instead of her mother. Again with death of a supporting character.
10 - Back To The Future 7/10 - Roger Bart is hilarious - definitely the reason to see the show. Set was actually a little underwhelming - too much reliance on projections. Some fun numbers but no real standouts.
Overall: no shows I disliked this time. VERY strong season. Some really creative use/resuses of minimalistic elements this season. Other season trends: full size cars and actual rain. And death - so much death

Blown away by the MoPOP Founders Award Tribute to Alice in Chains event
Featuring appearances by Metallica, Billy Corgan, Korn, members of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Heart, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Guns N' Roses, Jane's Addiction, plus Billy Corgan, Mark Lanegan and more.
The event included Metallica performing "Would?" acoustic (Korn performed it at full volume earlier in the benefit), members of Soundgarden with Tad Doyle, Mike McCready and Meagan Grandall performing "Angry Chair," Fishbone performing "Them Bones," Billy Corgan playing "Check My Brain," Mastodon performing "Again," Kim Thayil with Krist Novoselic's band Giants in the Trees performing "Drone" and lots more.
Alice in Chains were the recipients of MoPOP's 14th Annual Founders Award. “This band started 33 years ago, three and a half miles down the road in Ballard," said the band's Jerry Cantrell, accepting the award. "It's a pretty amazing journey that we're still on. There are so many great artists and friends who have contributed shout-outs and performances -- it's been a really cool experience and William, Sean, Mike, and I would like to thank everybody. And, as we accept these awards, we want to remember our bandmates as well, Layne Staley and Mike Starr. Wow, what a night!”

When last we checked in on The Little Lies, summer was coming to a close as the band members embarked on their own individual projects and gigs for the remainder of the year.
Suffice it to say, the fall and winter months of 2022 were that much colder in the band's absence. And sadly, on November 30, Christine McVie passed away. A major creative force within Fleetwood Mac, she was and is an inspiration within The Little Lies and, for their first performance of 2023, the band's giving a proper Little Lies send-off to this famed musician, wonderful singer/songwriter, classic rock icon... this Friday night, January 27, 9pm at The Nectar Lounge in Fremont.
The band's traditional set will be expanded to include even more songs by Christine McVie that'll be covered by a local Who's Who of guest vocalists including Shaina Shepherd, Molly Sides, Kate Dinsmore, Kim West, and Kathy Moore & Jen Ayers of The Wild Rumours.
Less another Little Lies gig and definitely more an event... we're stoked to see the band again. It's been much, much too long since they dazzled on-stage last:
Miranda Zickler (lead vocals), Andrew Vait (lead vocals,.guitar), Linzy Collins (lead vocals, keys), Harry Wirth III (bass), and Cyra Wirth (drums).
Beyond friday, looks like we’re gonna see the band once again putting on their fun, high octane shows at the Fisherman’s Village Music Festival, Taste of Edmonds, and Everett’s Music at the Marina.
First things first, though. If you wanna experience the band’s upcoming show A Tribue to Christine McVie, just click right here.
The many expressions of Shaina Shepherd whose range is extremely dynamic mixing rock, soul and american folk. Many from KRBX witnessed this outstanding performance at The Hideout on Day 5 as Treefort 2022 starts to wide down. SS

I watched the Songs for Hope: SMASH Seattle benefit and FUCKING CRIED over The Black Tones and Mike McCready’s cover of “Pride (In The Name of Love)” BECAUSE I MISS SEEING THE BLACK TONES LIVE SO FUCKING MUCH, LIKE IT MAKES ME CRY JUST THINKING ABOUT IT AGAIN NOW. They’re the second band I want to see live (after Black Ends, who I want to see first because I’ve never gotten the opportunity to see them live!) as SOON as this fucking pandemic is over. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Also, I expected a lot from Shaina Shepherd AND GOT IT ALL AND MORE BECAUSE GOD DAMN SHE SINGS WITH EVERYTHING IN HER EVERY TIME AND IT’S SO 😭💗❤❤❤❤ TO SEE/HEAR, but I wasn’t expecting as much from the fact that her cover of “A Change is Gonna Come” was with Duff McKagan...and tbh...yeah.......................Shaina carried that whole song herself. (Although the band was good, too, don’t get me wrong.) She shouldn’t have needed to, of course, but...how many people expect Duff to be a great singer? Come on, now, honesty only. Shaina, on the other hand, can SING, and boy do I appreciate that. :’) I also love Bear Axe and miss getting to see and hear them, too, although I got to see them on NYE 2020...
