No Speaker of the House Yet, But Here's Who We'd Nominate to Fill the Void
The Speaker doesn't have to be a member of Congress (like, who knew?) So we decided to nominate a few of our own: Beyoncé, Common, Al Sharpton and more.

Republicans are hard at work doing their favorite activity, making it impossible to do any governing. For the first time in 100 years, a nominee from the party in power failed to win the initial floor vote. (Congrats on the biggest failure of the century, Representative Kevin McCarthy).
Until they can come to an agreement, the House is at a complete standstill. But while the Republicans were spending their time squabbling, over at the Root, we decided to find a solution.
Fun fact, anyone can be elected as Speaker of the House regardless even if they’re not a member of congress.
So in the interest of helping democracy function and having a few laughs, here are The Rootnominees for Speaker of the House.

Queen Bé for Speaker
Obviously we can’t have a conversation about leadership without talking about the queen herself, Beyoncé. Sure, she has zero political experience, but I’d vote for her over McCarthy in a heartbeat.

List slides
Megan Thee Stallion
She may not have any track record in politics, but this original Hot Girl, is tough enough for any challenge. She’d be dog walking the entire chamber in no time, and we’d love to see a speaker who can lay down the law and the beats.

Meghan Markle
The princess of our hearts managed to shake one of the oldest monarchies to its core just be existing. We’re pretty sure she could take on the U.S. Congress without breaking a sweat. And if they try to bully her, well, we know this duchess has Netflix on speed dial.

Common Takes Congress
Not to be crude, but the photo kind of speaks for itself. But seriously, looks aside, Common has been talking about issues in the Black community for decades with eloquence and poise. Congress could certainly use a touch of his soothing wit, even if his nomination would make Fox News explode.

Serena Williams
If you’ve ever seen Serena Williams body the competition at a tennis match, then you know the members of congress stand no chance against her. She’s fiery, she’s passionate, and honestly that killer serve alone wins her my vote.

Rev. Al Sharpton
This one is a no-brainer. Reverend Al Sharpton has been a civil rights icon since way before I’ve been alive. He loves to talk (so being speaker should be pretty easy). Get this man a gavel cause he’s certainly got our vote.

Keke Palmer
Who can forget the time Keke Palmer absolutely destroyed the central Republican villain of the early 2000s. But seriously, if she can unintentionally destroy Dick Cheney’s ego, imagine what she could do to the rest of the party if she was actually trying. All I’m going to say is that Ms. Keke P absolutely has my vote.

List slides
Oprah Winfrey
Has Oprah Winfrey earned some major side-eye from us over the years, sure. (**Cough Cough** Dr. Oz). But no one can deny that Oprah knows how to bring folks together. In a divided Congress, Oprah might be the only person capable of uniting the country.

List slides
Shannon Sharpe
This one is just a pure chaos pick. Do I know anything about how Shannon Sharpe will be as a leader? No, but wouldn’t it be wild watching Republicans try to deal with this man on a daily basis, 100 percent. And for that reason, he’s got my vote.

List slides
Jayson Tatum
Promise we’re not just picking people because they’re handsome. Jayson Tatum happens to be a phenomenal leader of the Boston Celtics, and I think that says something about his ability to lead Congress. And yes, we wouldn’t mind looking at him for the next four years.

List slides
Vice President Kamala Harris
Nominating Vice President Kamala Harris for Speaker of the House wouldn’t really make any sense (she’s got her hands full). But you have to admit, having someone competent in the role would be pretty nice.
13 / 17
List slides
Former-First Lady Michelle Obama
I mean come-on haven’t we earned seeing Michelle Obama in a leadership position? Mostly, it would really piss of conservatives, and I’m honestly here for that too.

14 / 17
List slides
Lou Bega
Mambo No. 5 stole my heart as a child, and now I want to help Lou Bega steal the speaker’s gavel. From what I can tell he hasn’t done a ton since his major hit, so he’s probably free to take over Congress.
15 / 17
List slides
Loni Love
If you’ve ever seen Loni Love talk, you know she can command a room (ask anyone who saw her host the Root 100). All we need is to give this talk show host a gavel, and I’m sure she’d solve Congress in a heartbeat.
16 / 17
List slides
Representative Hakeem Jeffries
Y’all know I had to throw someone serious onto the list. While Republicans floundered, Democrats unanimously voted to elect Rep. Hakeem Jeffries as House Speaker, making him the first Black politician to lead either party. Jeffries was also the first person since 2007 to unanimously win the support of their party for leadership. Democrats don’t hold the majority, so it’s highly unlikely that Jeffries will be Speaker (although not technically against the rules). But there was no way to make this list without at least giving the New York Representative an honorable mention.

Nike x VA Securities to Present “Virgil Abloh: The Codes c/o Architecture”
Tumblr media
According to NIKE
What to Know
This December, Nike and VA Securities will honor Virgil Abloh’s creative legacy with a four-day experience during Miami Art Week.
In extended collaboration, Nike and VA Securities continue to build upon the culture of innovation that underpins the Nike x Virgil work past, present and future.
Celebrating Abloh’s working Codes, the events position the co-created Architecture platform as a driver for expanding Abloh’s creation ethos across future projects.
“Virgil Abloh: The Codes c/o Architecture” includes exhibition, discussions and workshops.
From December 1 through 4, 2022, Nike and VA Securities will present “Virgil Abloh: The Codes c/o Architecture” at Miami’s Rubell Museum. The exhibition honors Abloh’s creative legacy, highlighting his long-term partnership with Nike, and shares design methodologies that were central to his creative identity. The exhibition and its related programs are designed to showcase his methodological principles — known as Abloh’s Codes — which are meant to be applicable to any medium, product or space. The Codes made his work, and particularly The Ten with Nike, both easily identifiable and translatable.
“Virgil and Nike thrived together because he understood the brand’s role as a cornerstone of culture while Nike understood the importance of truly supporting creatives and their visions,” says Shannon Abloh, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Virgil Abloh Securities. “This beautiful four-day experience at Miami Art Week will honor their legacy together and champion both Virgil’s open-source methods and his genuine commitment to collaborating with and inspiring others.”
As Nike’s partnership with VA Securities evolves, the Codes will guide and shape future collaborative output led by the platform Abloh co-created with Nike, Architecture. Through Architecture, which is helmed by Mahfuz and Chloe Sultan, each future project is expected to reflect on and reinterpret the Codes.
The goal is to further Abloh’s legacy beyond an individual practice and to establish a framework for an enduring open-source institution and invitation to design anchored in inspirational storytelling.
“Virgil’s influence was so outsized and impactful,” says Serena Williams. “Not only did he inspire and empower my approach as a designer and collaborator, he did so with every partner, product and person he touched.”
That includes Leo Sandino-Taylor, Nike’s Vice President of Global Catalyst Brand Management. “The depth of Nike’s partnership with Virgil materialized far beyond our iconic collaborations. His transparent design approach influenced our teams and inspired a new generation of young design talent to find their creative voice and share it with the world,” says Sandino-Taylor. “Championing Virgil’s Codes allows our community to take a deeper look into his practice, celebrate his legacy and evolve how his ethos can continue to empower fresh voices and perspectives. Audible & Audio Up Release The Playboy Magazine Interviews
This is a trigger warning. What you’re about to hear is a “Boomer story.” So before I start, get it out of your system. Roll your eyes. Furrow your brows. Said aloud, “jeez!”
In the 1960s and 1970s, Playboy magazine was at the height of its powers. It wasn’t just a magazine. It was a social, psycho-sexual, and controversial icon. Back then, magazines mattered — a lot. And Playboy was one of the most influential — right up there with Time, Newsweek, Reader’s Digest, and TV Guide.
Tumblr media
Yes, I can hear you saying that Playboy was only popular because of the centerfold and adjacent photos of young woman in varying degrees of exposure. But there was more to the magazine. (Yes, I can hear you doubt me, Thomas).
There were the Vargas Girls, which were erotic paintings in the magazine for over 20 years. The artist, Alberto Vargas, was a Peruvian-born artist who became famous in the 1940s as the creator of iconic World War-II era pin-ups for Esquire magazine known as “Vargas Girls.”
Playboy magazine was also sought after because of their infamous, often bawdy, Playboy jokes. Here’s a brief one:
Also during the time, it was a standing joke that men claimed that they only bought Playboy “for the articles.”
Regardless of the purchasing motivation, those famous interviews in the magazine garnered a lot of attention in the zeitgeist. Why? First, because Playboy managed to corral famous and controversial people for the interviews. Second, because often what these famous people said made news. It was the typical “water cooler” discussion material back then.
Playboy describes these interviews this way: “For generations of fans, the Playboy Interview was revered as the gold standard in American journalism. To read it in its totality is to glimpse a record of everyone who mattered in the history of the 20th and 21st centuries; kicking off a remarkable run of public inquisition that has featured just about every cultural titan of the past half century.”
So it’s no surprise that Playboy — and Audio Up Media — have announced the release of the first season of The Playboy Interviews: Icons & Iconoclasts podcast series, exclusively from Audible.
An all-star line-up of actors voice seven of the most iconic Playboy Interview conversations, with Rosanna Arquette as Betty Friedan, Taye Diggs as Muhammad Ali, Michael Shannon as Tennessee Williams, Maya Hawke as Helen Gurley Brown, Kevin Corrigan as Frank Sinatra, Natasha Lyonne as Mae West and Gael Garcia Bernal as Salvador Dali. Writer and journalist Molly Jong Fast, whose mother, the “Fear of Flying” author, Erica Jong sat for the September 1975 interview, provides a spoken introduction to the series and addresses how important these interviews remain and why they should be celebrated.
Listen to all seven episodes of The Playboy Interviews: Icons & Iconoclasts here only from Audible, available now.
Thanks to Audible, listeners can hear those unabridged interviews as if they were in the room. Each conversation offers a unique look into not just the individual portrayed, but the time and place of the interview itself. “The Playboy Interviews: Icons & Iconoclasts” was adapted, produced and directed by Audio Up’s chief creative officer Jimmy Jellinek. Executive Producers include Playboy’s Chief Brand Officer, Rachel Webber, and Audio Up CEO Jared Gutstadt.
“I hope these interviews can serve as inspiration for subject and journalist alike,” Maya Hawke said. “An interview often reaches more people than the art you are being interviewed about. It was an honor to be asked and to gain a better understanding of brave women with big mouths and sharp minds.”
“What a wonderful idea and wonderful opportunity,” added Michael Shannon. “From a time when interviewing was an art form, as thrilling as the artist being interviewed. An honor to be asked.”
“We’re thrilled to reintroduce these iconic Playboy Interviews to a new generation of Playboy fans,” said Rachel Webber, Playboy’s Chief Brand Officer. “The Playboy Interviews: Icons & Iconoclasts is a deep dive into the evolving cultural perceptions and the American psyche — each of these iconic conversations feels just as relevant today as they did decades ago.”
About Each Episode
In playing Betty Friedan, Rosanna Arquette showcases The Feminine Mystique author and mother of the modern women’s movement, in a famously confrontational interview from Playboy’s 40th Anniversary Issue which took aim at the magazine for its leering objectification of women.
Muhammad Ali, who is portrayed by Taye Diggs, is shown in 1964, as a fledgling Heavyweight Champion, just months after defeating Sonny Liston. He is still searching for his voice underneath all the bombast.
Maya Hawke plays the legendary Cosmopolitan editor Helen Gurley Brown. The 1963 interview is prescient in its portrayal of abortion, female sexuality and liberation, years before the women’s movement truly kicked off.
Salvador Dali is shown to be a manic dervish of creativity, teetering on the edge of madness. Actor Gael Garcia Bernal brings out the humor and childlike sweetness from the potentially deranged surrealist that few seldom see.
Frank Sinatra, played by the fantastic Kevin Corrigan in for the crooners now-famous February 1963 interview, showcases a Sinatra sounding wholly “Un-Sinatra” as he attempts to expound on the nature of religion, nuclear disarmament and philosophy in hopes of shaking off his Rat Pack image and impressing John F. Kennedy who had barred the crooner from the White House at the behest of his brother Bobby.
Mae West, inhabited by the incomparable Natasha Lyonne, is revealed as a triumphant figure who hides behind her lascivious image. At age 78, West had returned with a vengeance as a camp hero of Gore Vidal’s provocative Myra Breckenridge, only to break the last Hollywood taboo: showing that an older woman could not only get top billing but could also be seen as a sex object.
Michael Shannon plays the brilliant, anguished playwright, Tennessee Williams who famously sat for Playboy’s 1973 Interview. He delivers a treatise on the symbiosis between good and evil while opening his life to inquisition; discussing his sex life, drug use and deteriorating health. Paranoid, funny and alternatively hostile and charming, Williams famously quipped, “If I got rid of all my demons, I’d lose my angels.”
History of the Playboy Interview
It was 1962, and Playboy founder and editor Hugh Hefner was thinking of adding a new interview feature to the eight-year-old Playboy magazine. The team began to sort through unpublished material, and a young associate editor named Murray Fisher uncovered a partial manuscript written by an up-and-coming journalist named Alex Haley. Haley had honed his writing skills while serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, eventually becoming its first chief journalist.
The manuscript was a Q&A, originally conducted for the defunct Show Business Illustrated, between Haley and jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. Fisher was so intrigued by Davis’s extensive comments on race relations in America — which he talked about more than he did music — that he asked Haley to further develop the piece. Haley later found himself boxing with Davis at his gym to win over the musician’s trust.
Published in the September 1962 issue, Haley’s work became the inaugural Playboy Interview, launching one of the most respected and vibrant franchises in print media. The first-ever question: “Linked with your musical renown is your reputation for bad temper and rudeness to your audiences. Would you comment?”
Playboy has published more than 500 interviews since Davis’s. The elegant, pointed and provocative question-and-answer format Haley established remains highly regarded in the world of journalism, and it has appeared in nearly every issue of the magazine since 1962, featuring such iconic figures as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, John Paul Sartre, Princess Grace, Fidel Castro, Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Steve Jobs, Whoopi Goldberg and Maya Angelou.
Recent Playboy Interviews have featured Tarana Burke, Jay-Z, Scarlett Johannson, Cecile Richards, Jeremy O. Harris, Christiane Amanpour and Jemele Hill.
*******
Check out these interviews. First, because they can offer listeners a luxury box seat to the mindset of the 60s and 70s. You’ll be better able to understand why Grandpa is so weird. Second, because Audible has hired well-known people who possess the talent to bring these interviewees to life in your ears. All the interviews are ear candy, but, to me, the Ali, Friedan, and Mae West interviews sparkle with even more luster.

WHY i think Shannon is definitely on the right path to becoming a better parent:
When she first sees Robby she apologizes and also conveys her feelings. she too has also been through a a lot. she then says she’s has to leave and Robby gets upset: saying “where too next? Cabo, etc.”
This did come out is a slightly “rude” tone but Robby has been through it before so he is justified for saying it. He is also conveying his emotions through countering his pain and it comes off like that. basically he has every right to be angry even if it doesn’t always get him in the right place...
Tumblr media
But unlike Johnny. Shannon understand and she doesn’t get mad or star blaming him!! She understands where Robby is coming from and she knows that she hasn’t been the best parent.
JUST LOOK at how Robby’s facial expressions change!!! He does from “🙄😠” to “🥺🙂”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you don’t remember the scene. Shannon is telling him she’s going to rehab for herself AND for Robby. And Robby is basically saying: “Oh wow, someone actually gives a sh*t about me and wants to change for me!!” like he is literally so happy 😭
I’m not praising her or anything she was still a pretty bad mom. But she gave one of the best apologizes I’ve ever heard on the show!! And especially towards Robby!! She acknowledges everything she’s done wrong and told that that to Robby. She didn’t get mad or blame him. She also says she blames herself for his and Johnny relationship and reconfirms with him that his dad does care about him and suggests that he should stay with him. Robby clearly cares, loves and in this moment trusted her and why when after the party he goes to Johnny’s house.
and on the flip side WHERE AS JOHNNY DOES THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE:
Tumblr media
He is standing there ARGUING with his son! after finally coming back because the school kept calling him😐 and that’s the only reason he was there. To say “hey don’t be like me. get ur life together. stop being a jerk.” and im like johnny lawernce’s is seriously not saying that. and saying “don’t be like me” well he is u and if I were there u could’ve taught him to not be the worst of you, but the good of you!!
YOU CAN LITERALLY SEE ROBBY KEENE IS HURTING:
Tumblr media
just like his father he counters pain with anger. but robby is seriously hurting inside!! ITS ALL IN THE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS! I wished they went to family therapy would’ve helped so much.
and Johnny is clearly so blind or just can’t process it . Since u can see him searching for something in there but the only way he’ll get it out if he actually stays with him and fights through that anger robby has and reach his roots pure, which won’t be easy but if he cared:
Tumblr media
AND NOPE!.... he just walks away AGAIN
