The Ultimate Guide to SharePoint Customization in 2025
Introduction
Microsoft SharePoint has evolved into a powerful platform for enterprise content management, collaboration, and digital workplace solutions. While SharePoint offers a wide range of out-of-the-box features, organizations often require SharePoint Customization to meet their specific business needs. Whether it’s building workflows, developing custom web parts, or personalizing the user interface, customizing SharePoint can significantly enhance productivity and user engagement.
In this article, we’ll delve deep into the technical aspects of SharePoint customization, exploring various options for SharePoint Online Customization, strategies for SharePoint Intranet Personalization, and how to develop SharePoint Custom Solutions tailored to unique enterprise requirements.
Why Customize SharePoint?
SharePoint's core strength lies in its flexibility. However, standard features might not align perfectly with your organizational workflow, compliance needs, or branding guidelines. Customization helps:
Streamline business processes through automated workflows.
Improve UI/UX with personalized dashboards and navigation.
Integrate third-party systems and data sources.
Reinforce company branding on intranet portals.
Types of SharePoint Customization
There are two primary methods of customizing SharePoint:
1. No-Code/Low-Code Customizations
These are built using SharePoint's built-in tools and require minimal developer effort:
Power Automate Workflows: Automate business processes.
Power Apps: Create custom forms or apps.
Modern Web Parts: Use reusable web parts like document libraries, calendars, and custom lists.
SPFx (SharePoint Framework): A low-code development model to build client-side extensions using React/TypeScript.
2. Full-Code Customizations
Ideal for complex requirements where out-of-the-box features fall short:
Custom Web Parts and Extensions
Custom APIs using Azure Functions or Azure Logic Apps
Integration with Line-of-Business (LoB) systems
Advanced branding using PnP templates and CSS/HTML
SharePoint Online Customization: Best Practices
SharePoint Online Customization has unique challenges compared to SharePoint Server, primarily due to Microsoft 365's cloud-first model and continuous updates. Here are some best practices:
1. Use the SharePoint Framework (SPFx)
SPFx is the recommended way to create modern web parts and extensions in SharePoint Online. It leverages open-source tools like Node.js, Gulp, and React.
2. Avoid Farm Solutions and Full-Trust Code
These are deprecated in SharePoint Online. Use sandboxed solutions or client-side scripting.
3. Leverage Power Platform
The Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI) is tightly integrated with SharePoint Online, allowing low-code solutions for automation, analytics, and UI improvements.
4. Use PnP Provisioning Engine
The Patterns and Practices (PnP) Provisioning Engine allows you to define custom site templates and provisioning logic using XML or JSON configurations.
SharePoint Intranet Personalization Techniques
An intranet is often the central hub of internal communication, and SharePoint Intranet Personalization ensures that it remains relevant and user-focused. Here’s how you can technically personalize SharePoint intranets:
1. Audience Targeting
Modern web parts like Quick Links, Hero, and News support audience targeting. This allows you to display content based on Azure AD groups.
Technical Setup:
Enable audience targeting in web part settings.
Assign Azure AD groups to the content block.
2. Personalized Dashboards with Microsoft Graph
Microsoft Graph API can fetch user-specific data (e.g., documents, emails, tasks) and render it dynamically on intranet pages.
Use Case:
Show recent documents or pending tasks for the logged-in user.
3. Custom Navigation and Branding
Use the SharePoint Look Book or create SPFx extensions to control headers, footers, themes, and navigational layouts.
4. Localization and Language Variants
Create multilingual experiences using SharePoint’s multilingual publishing capabilities. Customize content and labels based on user’s preferred language.
Developing SharePoint Custom Solutions
Developing SharePoint Custom Solutions often involves integrating SharePoint with enterprise systems like ERP, CRM, or HR platforms. Here’s a breakdown of technical considerations:
1. External Data Integration via Business Connectivity Services (BCS)
BCS enables the integration of external data sources like SQL, SAP, or custom APIs into SharePoint lists.
2. Custom Forms with Power Apps
Replace InfoPath forms with Power Apps. Customize list forms or create standalone apps that can be embedded in SharePoint pages.
3. Custom Connectors
Use Azure API Management to create custom connectors that integrate third-party platforms like Salesforce, ServiceNow, or SAP with SharePoint.
4. Security and Governance
All custom solutions must adhere to governance policies. Use Microsoft 365 Security & Compliance Center to monitor and control data access.
SEO Optimization Tips for SharePoint Portals
Customizing SharePoint for intranet use doesn’t mean ignoring SEO, especially for public-facing SharePoint sites.
Tips:
Use H1-H5 tags properly in custom master pages or modern site templates.
Optimize images with ALT text and descriptive filenames.
Ensure fast load times with optimized SPFx packages.
Use metadata and page descriptions for better indexing.
Add breadcrumb navigation using SPFx components or PnP libraries.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Over-customizing can make migration and updates difficult.
Ignoring mobile responsiveness in custom web parts.
Lack of proper version control in SPFx solutions.
Hardcoding values instead of using dynamic tokens or configuration settings.
Conclusion
SharePoint Customization offers powerful capabilities for building enterprise-grade solutions that are tailored to your business workflows and employee experience. Whether you're enhancing collaboration through SharePoint Online Customization, improving user engagement with SharePoint Intranet Personalization, or building complex SharePoint Custom Solutions, understanding the technical framework is key to long-term success.
Customizing SharePoint the right way ensures scalability, maintainability, and a strong return on investment.

How to Customize the News Web Part in SharePoint Online?
The SharePoint modern news web part is a useful way to share announcements and updates in SharePoint Online.
With some simple customizations, you can make this web part stand out and match your site's look and feel.
In this article, we'll walk through customizing various aspects of the news web part like layout, headers, text formatting, and more.
Tumblr media
Change the Web Part Layout
The news web part offers three layout options to choose from:
Stacked
Column left
Column right
You can select the layout that best fits your content and page design. Here's how:
Edit the page where the news web part is added and select the web part to open the property pane
Under "Appearance", find the Layout setting
Choose your preferred layout: stacked, column left, or column right
The stacked layout places news posts vertically one under the other. The left and right column layouts show posts side-by-side in columns.
Customize the Headers
By default, the news web part shows the post title, author name, and published date. You may want to change these headers.
To customize headers:
Edit the news web part properties
Navigate to "Headers"
Delete any headers you don't need
Edit existing headers by changing the display text
Add new headers as needed
Some useful headers you can add include category, feature image, summary, etc.
Change Text Formatting
Make your news posts more visually interesting by applying text formatting. Here are some formatting options:
Use Rich Text Column for Body
In list settings, change the body column type to "Multiple lines of text" with "Rich text" formatting
Posts added after this will support text formatting
You can then make words bold, italicize text, add color, and more!
Format Column Values
In the web part properties pane, go to "Posts" > "Columns"
Choose the column and edit its formatting
Columns like Title and Headers can be formatted this way.
Show Featured Images
Adding images helps draw attention to important posts. Here's how to show images in the news web part:
In list settings, add a column called "Feature Image" of type "Hyperlink or Picture"
When creating posts, add the URL of the featured image in this column
In web part properties, go to "Appearance" > Show Featured Image
Set value to "Yes"
The chosen image will now show up prominently at the top of each news post.
Customize the Post Excerpt
The post excerpt shows a short preview. Customize what shows in the excerpt:
In web part properties, go to “Posts” > “Excerpt”
Select one of the following:
None: Do not show an excerpt
Number of sentences: Specify sentences visible
Manual Excerpt: Enter custom excerpt text
Post Body: Show full post content
For a consistent preview length, set a fixed number of sentences. To highlight key points, write a custom excerpt.
Show News Posts Selectively
Show only certain news posts by applying filters:
Under “Filters”, check “Enable post filtering”
Choose either Categories or Tags
Select the specific categories/tags to show
SharePoint will only display posts belonging to the selected categories or tags.
Tumblr media
Match Color Theme
Make your news web part blend with site theme colors:
Under “Appearance”, pick a predefined color theme
Or enter custom colors for backgrounds, text, links, borders, etc.
Choosing a lighter background color works best for readability.
Final Touches
Finally, customize these last settings:
Number of posts: Control how many posts display
Sort order: Newest first or oldest first
Info position: Show post info above or below title
Image position: Place image above or below title
Text alignment: Align post text left/center/right
Post space: Add spacing between posts
And that covers how to customize the news web part in SharePoint Online! With these steps, you can tweak the web part to match any site design.

Top 10 Microsoft SharePoint 365 Tips and Tricks 2023!
Tumblr media
SharePoint Online is a great tool for creating intranets, document management and integrating your Microsoft 365 apps. Like everything though, Microsoft SharePoint tips and tricks are needed if you want to get setup quickly. To build a professional intranet or DMS you will need the help of a SharePoint developer. However, there are tasks that can be handled in-house and handy SharePoint tips and tricks to help you manage SharePoint. That’s why we have put together this list of useful SharePoint 365 tips and tricks to help you out.
SharePoint 365 Tips and Tricks 1: Understand the SharePoint Site Architecture
Tumblr media
The first and most important thing to understand with SharePoint, is the architecture. It can be quite confusing to newbie’s how everything fits together with the other Microsoft 365 applications.
Overview
At a high-level, SharePoint works with a cascading structure. SharePoint sites are the top-level containers that house all content for a specific area (e.g a department like HR). These sites can contain subsites, document libraries, lists, web parts and pages.
Subsites – are used to house subsets of data for specific areas.
Document libraries – are used to store the sites documents.
Lists – are used to store data (like an online Excel spreadsheet). An example of a list could be a HR list of employee information.
Web parts – widgets that are used for functionality that can be embedded into a page.
Pages – are used to display content and information from lists and libraries.
Flat Structure vs Subsites
In the modern world of SharePoint, we have two possible ways of structuring SharePoint sites. Flat structure (recommended) and using subsites. Back in the old days of SharePoint, people used lots of subsites, sometimes going multiple levels deep. This caused SharePoint admins a nightmare to manage, as content was not easy to move and resulted in confusing navigation. So, flat structures were introduced. Creating all sites as ‘top-level’ sites and using hubsites to group them together (I will explain hubsites a bit later).
This is one of our favourite SharePoint 365 tips and tricks. People can often slip up by not knowing the recommended approach and it can be hard to rectify once you go down this path.
SharePoint 365 Tips and Tricks 2: Team site vs Communication site
Second on our list of Microsoft SharePoint tips and tricks, is the difference between SharePoint sites. In previous versions of SharePoint there were many site templates to choose from. Now in SharePoint 365 we just have two main ones. Team sites and communications sites.
Tumblr media
When creating a SharePoint site, we can use the team site template. They are mainly used for collaboration within a specific team, for a closed group, or limited amount of people. For example, if you work in the HR team and want a place to store and collaborate on documents for your team, this template should be chosen. Team sites, can be ‘group connected’, which bundles a SharePoint site together with other Microsoft 365 tools, like Teams, Outlook and OneNote. Or you can build a standalone Team site.
Tumblr media
These site templates are generally used for information that will be displayed either company-wide, or to a large audience. The are most often used for intranets, to showcase information or display content in a more visually friendly way.
SharePoint 365 Tips and Tricks 3: Understanding integration between SharePoint and Teams
Understanding how SharePoint works with Microsoft Teams is very important in the modern workplace. This can sometimes be overlooked as an important tip, when describing how SharePoint works.
Teams is now a key part of many workplaces. It is used to chat with colleagues, video conferencing and collaborating on document within groups or ‘Teams’. When it comes to document collaboration, what most people aren’t aware of is that Teams is not much more than a user interface for SharePoint. When you create a new ‘team’ in Teams, this creates a new SharePoint site in the backend. All the documents you add and share within your team is stored in the SharePoint document library. For each channel you create within your team, this creates a new folder in your SharePoint document library. Which is used to categorise the content.
Lists vs Libraries
A very simple one of our Microsoft SharePoint tips and tricks to explain, but also something a lot of SharePoint newbies might not understand. What is the difference between a SharePoint list and a document library? Essentially, lists store content and libraries store files. Lists act like Excel or a database, to store and manage data. That data can then be used to develop apps, or create dashboards and reports to visualise and manage the data. Document libraries are purely containers for your document and folder structure, similar to working in file explorer on your laptop.
Using metadata to categorise your content
When setting up a new SharePoint library or list, you need to think about what metadata will be used, based on what it will be used for and structure it accordingly. If you ask any SharePoint developer for SharePoint 365 tips and tricks, this will come up, as it is a very important aspect of SharePoint.
For document libraries, there are two main ways of structuring content. Using a metadata structure, or a folder structure.
Metadata structure – the document or data is tagged with metadata, that is used to categorise the content. The metadata is filtered or searched to find the file you are looking for. For example you could have a date column and a department column and you could filter each column by the month and department you need to bring up all relevant documents. This structure is generally used for large libraries that need to be organised by multiple categorisations.
Folder structure – works just like your Windows file explorer, you use folders and subfolders to store files and organise them.
Microsoft SharePoint Tips and Tricks 6: Hub sites, home site and root site
As you start to get into the more advanced options within SharePoint, you will surely come across these three terms for sites, that seem quite similar. Let us break down what each one means.
Hub sites – as mentioned in ‘SharePoint 365 tips and tricks 1’, sites are often arranged in a ‘flat structure’ instead of using subsites to organise your content. However, the downside to this is you can end up with hundreds of rouge sites, not properly associated to similar sites. This is where hub sites come in. These are sites that are used to associate similar sites, to represent a structure.
Home site – this is generally set on the SharePoint site that is used for your intranet home page. This site tells users that this is the entry for your SharePoint intranet.
Root site – this is the default site that is created when setting up SharePoint, it cannot be deleted and is the site that is displayed under yourcomanyname.sharepoint.com
Microsoft SharePoint Tips and Tricks 7: Turbo Charging SharePoint with the Power Platform
SharePoint comes as part of the Microsoft 365 suite of products, so it integrates really well with the tools available in M365. However, there are three other Microsoft tools that can really super charge the Microsoft SharePoint functionality.
Power Automate – used for creating workflows within SharePoint and other Microsoft products. These workflows can be used to process data stored in SharePoint lists and libraries, to create anything from document approvals to complex business flows.
Power Apps – used to create mobile, desktop and tablet apps, that can be used as a custom user interface to display data from SharePoint lists and libraries.
Power BI – used to display your data into user friendly reporting dashboards to properly visualise data in graphs and charts.
Microsoft SharePoint Tips and Tricks 8: Permission structure and file sharing
SharePoint permissions can be a hard concept to grasp, as the permissions can get very granular and detailed. In short, access can be set at any level in SharePoint and cascades down from granting access to a SharePoint site, right down to granting access on individual files and folders.
Understanding your Branding Limitations
Back in previous versions of SharePoint, design and branding options were almost unlimited. You could use custom code to completely tailor your SharePoint page designs into anything you wanted. Although this is still possible in SharePoint online, one of our Microsoft SharePoint tips and tricks is not use this option. In modern SharePoint, Microsoft do not recommend doing so and there are very strict branding guidelines that should be followed. This is to avoid security risks and governance nightmares.  Companies should now use SharePoint themes and templates to apply branding.
Uitilise Co-authoring
Although technically co-authoring is a feature of the Microsoft Office tools. It is a great SharePoint 365 tip, as it can be used to its full potential within SharePoint. Co-authoring provides the ability for multiple team members to collaborate on files together at the same time. Making changes in real time and even starting chats within the document.
Getting a grasp on managing SharePoint yourself is important for all SharePoint users. However, sometimes you do need a SharePoint expert to help out with tasks.

SPFx - Inject CSS and JS files in SharePoint Modern Pages
Today, I will explain how we can easily inject custom .css and .js files in a modern SharePoint site. I have to admit, this is not what Microsoft recommends you to do when it comes to customise your SharePoint design. However, for some very particular scenarios, you might need to step up a bit and add your own CSS and JS codes there. I had to create a wiki site which had to look very basic (same…

The Hero web part brings an engaging, visually appealing web experience to SharePoint Online.
With its modular layout and dynamic components, Hero enables creators to build beautiful pages complete with images, videos, documents, and more.
Many organizations using SharePoint Online still rely on classic SharePoint pages.
Although easy to use, these pages limit customization and have a somewhat dated look and feel.
Migrating key pages to the Hero web part brings a modern web experience that engages site visitors.

Users of OneDrive for iOS and Android will be able to to navigate quickly to specific pages in PDFs. In Finder, the files will appear with an "Excluded from sync" icon in the Status column, and users will see a notification in the OneDrive activity center explaining why the files aren't syncing. When this setting is enabled, the sync app doesn't upload new files that match the specified keywords, and the files remain in the local OneDrive folder. IT admins who are managing macOS devices in their organizations can enable this setting using the prescribed plist file entry to prevent users from uploading specific file types such as. We enabled functionality in OneDrive for macOS that allows IT admins to prevent the OneDrive sync app from uploading certain files to OneDrive or SharePoint. SharePoint site administrators and OneDrive owners will have the authority to extend or remove access for the selected users.Įxclude specific files from sync on macOS Once the policy is implemented, external users will automatically lose access to content on the site-by-site level (or OneDrive-by-OneDrive level). This policy can be enabled in the SharePoint admin center (both modern and classic) and applies to both OneDrive and SharePoint. To protect shared files, administrators can set a mandatory expiration period to ensure access doesn't last forever and help avoid leaking organization data by accident. We are now adding an additional entry point to Link settings from the Quick permissions dropdown that provide more granular sharing control, so you easily can change link types and sharing permissions. SharePoint Development Models
Through this article, we are going to have an overview of the different SharePoint development models. Let's get into it!
Introduction
Before building an application, we have a large amount things to think: needs, goals, architecture, infrastructure, frameworks and so on. Developing for SharePoint add an additional layer of complexity because we have to choose between various ways to work.
Each SharePoint development model has its purposes, advantages and difficulties. Here, we are going to have an overview of those different models.
Farm Solutions
Also known as Full Trust Solutions, they require to be developed on a SharePoint server and have access to full server-side SharePoint API. They are supported in SharePoint on-premise installations and have to be deployed by a Farm Administrator and the various features they can contain are then available to the entire farm.
Farms Solutions are distributed as wsp packages and can have different scope: Farm, Web Application, Site Collection or Website. They support things like Features, Event Receivers, Timer Jobs, WebParts, Modules and so on.
When we deploy a Farm Solution, we have to keep in mind that an IIS Reset will be performed.
Sandbox Solutions
Because Farm Solutions are very permissive, Microsoft introduced another kind of solution: Sandbox Solutions. Their scope is smaller because they can only target the Site Collection and have access to a small subset of the server-side API.
The wsp packages can be deployed to a Solutions Gallery and they don't force the server to reset and while a Farm Solution can bring down the whole farm, a Sandbox Solution has only impact on a Site Collection. They are very useful to deploy assets or Content Types and Lists.
Sandbox Solutions are now deprecated, but they can still be used.
Add-Ins
Also known as Apps, SharePoint Add-Ins are deployed in the App Catalog, in the form of an .app file, public or private, and provide a way to develop an application without any server-side code executing on the SharePoint server. This means that Add-Ins run either in the context of the client browser or on another server.
This model introduced with the concept of the Office Store and Cloud-related things in mind, provides a high level of isolation. Add-Ins require working with the Client Side Object Model (CSOM) or the REST API.
Microsoft claims that a Farm Solution can be converted into one or various Add-Ins. However, create things that could easily be done with a Farm Solution with an Add-In can be tricky.
SharePoint Add-Ins come in various flavors:
SharePoint-Hosted
Provider-Hosted
SharePoint-Hosted Add-Ins are installed on a SharePoint Website, called the Host Web while their resources are hosted on an isolated subsite called the App Web. They only support JavaScript, a few ASPX files and XML. SharePoint-Hosted Add-Ins can access data and resources that are outside of the App Web by using one of the following techniques to bypass the browser's same origin policy: a special JavaScript cross-domain library or a specific JavaScript WebProxy class.
Provider-Hosted Add-Ins include components that are deployed on another server while they are installed on the Host Web. It means that we are able to run server-side code on another server and to communicate with SharePoint using CSOM. They offer a great flexibility to develop the various elements we need.
If we can create WepParts with Farm Solutions, Add-Ins offer something similar called Add-In Parts, or Client WebPart. This concept is similar to WebPart, but it implies that the Add-In Part displays a webpage that we specify by using an IFrame in a page in the Host Web.
SharePoint Add-Ins are security principals that need to be authenticated and authorized and this can be done in various ways. An Add-In uses permission requests to ask for the permissions it needs. The permission requests specify the rights that the Add-In needs and the scope at which it needs the rights.
SharePoint Framework
Also known as SPFx, the SharePoint Framework is the most recent addition to the SharePoint developer toolbox. It provides full support for client-side development it grows with the development of SharePoint Online. It allows us to develop components using modern web technologies such as React. For now, the support of this framework is more advanced in SharePoint Online and it is only possible to develop WebParts and Extensions.
One advantage of this framework is that we don't need SharePoint to be installed on our machine to develop. We just have to download a few Node packages and to run our server using Gulp. When we compile what we developed, we also get an .app file.
Conclusion
Through this article, we saw the various existing ways to develop for and with SharePoint. We saw the main idea behind each model, what they have in common and how they differ. We saw that Solutions use server-side API and Add-Ins aim to execute in a client context. We also had a small overview of the SharePoint Framework.

Updated SharePoint, OneDrive Monitoring
Exoprise recently updated the CloudReady SharePoint sensor for monitoring SharePoint Online and SharePoint 2019 Server. At the same time we separated the CloudReady OneDrive sensor to better segregate the crowd. This was a feature request that customers had been asking for.
For both sensors, we upgraded the browser, improved the bandwidth (throughput) tests and a number of other enhancements. Read on for more information about new features and enhancements.
Tumblr media
Improved Modern SharePoint Support
Since 2018, Microsoft has made dramatic improvements to SharePoint under the umbrella term of “Modern” or Modern SharePoint. Modern SharePoint was a significant upgrade to the entire SharePoint experience with improved support for newer client side technologies,  modern web JavasScript technologies and mobile support. Modern SharePoint is easier to use, more customizable and faster.
When it came to supporting Modern SharePoint sites and monitoring them, Exoprise CloudReady did a pretty good job but sometimes newer JavaScript dependencies like background updating, Ajax/XHR sometimes bogged down our older headless browser which was a derivative of Webkit. We knew we had to upgrade the SharePoint and OneDrive sensor to our latest headless browser which we call Exotron.
Exotron is derived from a very recent Chromium, in particular, Electron (which is derived from Chromium), with some additional customization that helps us control, automate, and containerize it. Which version of Chrome? A very recent one that we plant to update more frequently than we did previously. It doesn’t matter so much exactly which version as Chrome updates very frequently.
If any of these terms or project names are confusing, try and click through to the links. Browsers are a vast and complicated world – they are nearly as complicated as an operating system these days and the features move fast.
With the larger dependency that our customers take on Modern SharePoint (some), we wanted a better browser to emulate and measure the user experience against Modern SharePoint while also continuing support for classic mode. Many of customers use both, compare and contrast classic and modern and require support for both.

OneDrive Not SharePoint
SharePoint and OneDrive are obviously quite similar for file basics and file storage. But past the shared file metaphors, SharePoint starts to diverge considerably with features like Content Management System (CMS) support, collaboration and page editing/customization.
Since we launched our SharePoint sensor a few years back, we supported OneDrive and SharePoint in the same sensor but some customers wanted that support separated. When it comes to CloudReady, they wanted unique crowd-powered analytics for SharePoint separate from the crowd of OneDrive. This was another goal for the upgrade.
Now, there is a OneDrive sensor that is separate from the SharePoint sensor and their comparisons are different as well. We also skillfully, migrated the sensors in place on behalf of customers where possible (in most cases). So customers that had deployed a SharePoint sensor against OneDrive, when they signed in, they now have the new OneDrive sensors (wasn’t easy).

Flexible File Throughput Tests
A few customers asked for better control of the upload and downloads test bandwidth and and network capacity to OneDrive and/or SharePoint sites. If an organization has migrated their file stores, SANs or NAS solutions to OneDrive and SharePoint, they wanted to be able to test that the throughput is reliable, consistent, and sustained. That’s how we used SharePoint and OneDrive here at Exoprise.
In the previous version of the SharePoint/OneDrive monitoring we only supported a fixed file at just under a 1/2 megabyte. At the time we designed the sensor, we did research into what the average size of a Microsoft Office document which was around 400kb (it is compressed after all). It was a good size to start off with but proved to be too small to accurately measure bandwidth or throughput.
The upgraded SharePoint and  OneDrive sensor now support selectable file sizes up to 10mb. Remember though, that you’re paying for your own bandwidth from whichever locations sensors are deployed to. Currently, selectable file sizes are not supported when deploying SharePoint or OneDrive sensors to Exoprise public sites. Why would you want to measure bandwidth of our public sites?
Finally, the new headless browser that makes up our SharePoint and OneDrive monitoring are fully capable of threaded uploads and downloads. This is far more accurate and representative of modern browsers that are being utilized in most businesses today (or at least they should be). Browsers get faster all the time.
Better Azure AD, Single Sign-On Support
Increasingly, Single Sign-On vendors leverage more sophisticated techniques to sign users in, quickly, and maintain the sessions or at least cache components of the sign-ins. Often, these techniques rely on Ajax and XHR or background IFrames to access and sign users in while still starting the actual background page transfers that are representative of Single Page Apps or Modern SharePoint and their JavaScript frameworks.
Our older headless browser didn’t perform as well as newer browsers with some of these asynchronous techniques. We accounted for it with various polyfills and low-level instrumentation but ultimately it was another reason to upgrade the browser that represents our SharePoint and OneDrive sensor.  Modern day browsers have spent lots of time over the past few years optimizing their thread handling, background updates and throughput.
