Harringrove April Days 23 & 26: Picnic & Easy

Harrington & Holloway had a reputation as one of the best law firms in all of Indiana.

It was just as well-known for its annual company picnic.

The picnic was a tradition begun years ago, when Edward Harrington and Tom Holloway first started the firm. It had grown over time from a BBQ at the park to a full catered event at the Hawkins fairgrounds, complete with live entertainment and various activities for everyone from kids to adults.

As the boss' son, Steve was expected to attend every year. It was okay when he was a kid and spent his time playing with Heather, Tommy, and everyone else. But as he got older and friendships changed or disappeared, and the 'happy family' facade his parents insisted on in public became harder to maintain, the picnic became more of a chore, even something to dread.

Leaning against an oak tree at the edge of the fairgrounds, away from the crowds and music, Steve's thoughts drifted to last year's picnic. Last year he'd brought Nancy. She was his first serious girlfriend, beautiful and intelligent and fearless. She got into an argument with one of the junior partners about inequality in the criminal justice system and it ended with the man stomping off like a child throwing a temper tantrum. Steve couldn't quite follow the discussion but at that moment he knew he loved her.

Over the next few months, though, they'd drifted apart. Nancy was ambitious and sure of herself. Steve wanted to do good, to be something more than his father's son, handed everything as he drifted through life. He just didn't know what that 'more' was.

So he hadn't been entirely surprised when they broke up. They stayed friends, and when Nancy announced she was dating Jonathan Byers he was genuinely happy for them. They shared similar interests and were a good match, better than he and Nancy had ever been.

He just kept hoping he'd meet his perfect match, that his true love was somewhere out there, waiting for him.

"Steve!"

Heather's excited voice pulled him out of his thoughts, and he straightened up as she and Robin hurried towards him, hand in hand, both of them grinning.

"Oh my god, dingus, we were looking everywhere for you," Robin said.

"I just needed a break," Steve said. He rolled his eyes. "I can only hear 'why aren't you going to college this year', 'do you have a girlfriend', 'what about your career plans' so many times before I snap."

Heather and Robin exchanged a look, then their smiles became even wider.

"Hey, what's that?" Steve asked, noticing something on their faces.

Heather tilted her head to give him a better view of the rainbow painted on her right cheek. It matched the one on Robin's.

"That's why we were looking for you," Heather said, her dark eyes sparkling. "You've got to get your face painted, too."

"Nah, I don't think so," Steve said.

"No, you really do," Robin said, taking his hand and tugging. "C'mon!"

"Okay, Jesus," Steve said, letting himself be led.

He perked up a bit as they walked, buoyed by Robin and Heather's enthusiasm. Heather was like a sister to him, and he and Robin had become good friends in the two months Heather and Robin had been dating. Being around them never failed to cheer him up.

They dragged him to a tent where several people, mostly little kids and a few teenagers, waited to get their faces painted.

Steve felt awkward being the oldest person in line, but Robin and Heather stood with him. And when they reached the front and he got a good look at the face paint artist, he forgot all about the other people around him.

The face painter was a guy who looked about his age, blonde curls pulled up in a messy bun. He was wearing a red shirt with two buttons undone that showed off his muscular build. But he appeared surprisingly gentle as he drew a glittery flower on a little girl's cheek. Steve could see his tongue poking out between his teeth ever so slightly as he concentrated.

The guy finished and held up a mirror so the girl could see her flower. She grinned, then ran off to show her mother, waiting nearby. The guy looked up, a big smile on his face to greet his next customer.

So distracted by staring at the face painter, Steve didn't realize he was the next customer until Robin nudged him.

"Get going, dingus," she said, Heather giggling beside her.

Steve tried to glare at them and ended up almost tripping over his feet as he crossed the short distance and dropped unceremoniously into the chair near the face painter.

"Well, well, well," the guy said, aiming his blinding smile straight at Steve. His eyes were bright blue, almost the color of the summer sky, and Steve noticed he had a small gold hoop in one ear. "What can I do for you?"

Steve realized he probably should have thought of something. "Um...I'm not sure?"

"I've got some designs here you can pick from," the guy said, reaching for a photo album. "Or I can come up with something just for you."

Steve gulped.

"Uh, surprise me, I guess," he said. "Just, nothing too wild?"

The guy's grin turned softer. "Don't worry. I'll take good care of you."

He studied Steve for a moment, as if thinking, then picked up a brush.

"Turn your head," he said.

Steve obeyed, shifting in the chair so the left side of his face was exposed. He almost jumped at the first touch of the cool paint against his skin but as the guy worked, he relaxed. The guy's hand was steady but gentle, and occasionally Steve felt his breath against his cheek when he leaned in to touch up a spot.

He felt a twinge of disappointment when the guy set his brush down, sat back, and said, "All done. Ready to see?"

Steve managed a grin. "Yep."

The guy lifted his mirror. Steve was almost afraid to look, but as soon as he saw his face he couldn't tear his eyes away.

A dolphin in shades of blue and gray curled along his forehead, past his eye, and down his cheek. Dots and swirls of white and lighter blue created waves around it.

"Wow," Steve breathed. He looked at himself again, then back at the guy. "You're really good, man."

The guy's eyes widened slightly, as if he was surprised. "Thanks." The blinding, charming grin appeared again. "It's easy to work on a pretty face like yours though."

Steve blurted it out before he thought.

"Like mine? Have you ever looked in a mirror?"

The guy laughed, still watching him.

"Once or twice," he said, teasing.

Steve knew he should get going, find Robin and Heather and let the next kid in line have their turn.

"Well." He opened his mouth to thank the guy again, but instead he heard himself say, "You get a break or something, right? Do you wanna grab something to eat?"

"That'd be great," the guy said. "I'm Billy, by the way."

"Steve." Steve automatically held out his hand, years of polite introductions and handshakes drilled into him, and just as quickly wished he could take it back.

But Billy clasped it in his own hand, giving his fingers a gentle squeeze. "Nice to meet you, Steve. Let me just clean up here."

Steve waited while he set out a sign saying 'Back in 30 minutes' and put away his paints, brushes, and other supplies.

They set off towards the food tent, falling into conversation as if they'd known each other for years. By the time they sat down at a picnic table with ice-cold cans of soda and plates piled with burgers, salads, and potato chips, Steve had learned Billy had recently moved from California with his stepmom and stepsister.

"Susan's got family here," he explained. "So she came here to be close to them and away from my asshole father. I was lucky she got custody and brought me too."

"Do you miss it?" Steve asked. "I mean, coming from California to good old Hawkins - that's gotta be tough."

"Yeah, it is," Billy said. "I miss the ocean. Surfing in the early morning when there's not many people around - there's nothing else like it. Sometimes I'd even see dolphins. Once one swam right up next to me." His eyes shone with excitement. "That was the most incredible thing I've ever seen."

"Wow." Steve used his fork to poke at his potato salad. "So is that why you drew a dolphin on me?"

"That, and I just like them." Billy looked directly at Steve, a small smile on his lips. "They're smart, playful. Beautiful."

Steve stuffed a forkful of salad in his mouth and chewed while he considered what to say. When he'd swallowed he took a deep breath.

"I think there are some dolphins at the Indianapolis Zoo," he said, trying to sound casual. "Maybe we could go and see them sometime. If you wanted."

Billy's smile widened. "I'd like that, pretty boy."

Steve smiled back.

When the Harrington & Holloway company picnic rolled around the following year, Steve wasn't there.

He was lying on a beach with Billy, the two of them celebrating the end of their first year at UCLA with an entire weekend doing nothing but surfing, hanging out at the beach, and having sex on every available surface in their dorm room.

Steve still couldn't quite believe how easy it was being with Billy, how easily everything had fallen into place in the past year. After hitting it off at the picnic he and Billy began dating and were soon deeply in love. He'd picked up some pamphlets at the zoo the first time they went there, and that led to an interest in environmental issues and conservation. He'd applied to environmental science programs when Billy applied to art school, and they both got into UCLA.

Robin and Heather, who were both studying social work in Chicago, had been thrilled when Steve told them about his plans to move to California and go to school with Billy. The four of them had double-dated several times during the year, and they were excited that Steve had not only found a loving boyfriend but an academic and career path he was passionate about. They'd promised to come for a visit over the summer, and Steve couldn't wait to see them.

Even Nancy was happy for him when she heard the news. She'd hugged him and said good for you, Steve Harrington with a big smile that made Steve glow with pride. He talked to her and Jonathan once in a while, and he was glad they were happy at NYU, supporting various causes and fighting for what they believed in.

The only people who weren't happy with his decisions were his parents. But they couldn't stop him, and although Steve still loved them, he didn't want to live their life or the life they'd planned for him.

"What are you thinking about, baby?" Billy murmured, rolling onto his side to run his fingertip up Steve's arm.

"Us." Steve flapped his hand to indicate everything around them. "This."

He turned his head towards his boyfriend and pressed a kiss to Billy's lips, the action familiar from repetition and even sweeter for its familiarity.

They smiled at each other when they parted, then settled back onto their towels and laid there holding hands, comfortable and content.

Rewriting a Mykan fanfic: Hate of the Sea

I don’t have a hatred towards Dakari King Mykan and I don’t think he’d want any pity. When he isn’t guided by biases or how he wanted something to end, he can write decent stories. No blockbusters but definitely not bad.

However, that’s the problem with Mykan. He views life in a way that’s so cynical, that even I, a guy who has quite a lot of cynical fanfics up his sleeve (including some rewrites that are darker than the shows they try to fix), reel in disgust. Mykan is a guy who goes out of his way to make a character from My Little Pony have a miscarriage because he didn’t like how she represents love. And that was just the one of two options people got to vote for. The other was killing off her husband for that exact same reason. The lightest story he wrote that I read was about a down-on-his-luck character-of-the-week from Inuyasha ends up getting together with the woman he loved.

So, I decided to use my slightly optimistic approach to stories to write up an alternate take on Mykan’s story: Hate of the Sea, a Little Mermaid fanfic where Mykan’s intent was to give Ariel and Melody a lesson about the real world, that not everything has a happy ever after ending… And I’m not sure if he’s read up on how the original Little Mermaid ended.

First off, let’s change that theme. We’ll still teach Ariel and Melody a lesson about the real world, but a lot less cynical: the cycle of revenge. Yes, yes, roll your eyes, but before Neil Druckmann destroyed that message to hell and back (along with some unpaid employees), the tale of someone wanting revenge and the pain of actually going through with it is an interesting tale that has multiple outcomes depending on your outlook. Do you want to be a cynic and show how revenge can make someone as ugly as the person who wronged them in the first place? An optimist who wants to show a more peace filled solution to the conflict? Someone who just wants someone to say “payback is a bitch” and leave it at that? Or are you a middle-of-the-road guy who observes the theme and stretches it out to its logical conclusion?

And, best part is, the ground work is already laid out for us. If you can, read Hate of the Sea to see what I’m talking about. You’ll get a better idea of where I’m going with this. For now, though, let’s start at the beginning. Things stay relatively the same, with a throwaway line about how Tip and Dash, Melody’s sidekicks in Little Mermaid 2, returned to the arctic because it’s summer time. The immediate change will be Count Aquis’s minions: Electricon and Angelicon.

A slight change though, making them more mystical than the sudden technological shift, to better tie in with the mythos of the Little Mermaid, so no piranha missiles. Also, I’d probably rename them because they’re honestly generic (and would be better for Transformer faction names anyways) but the best I can think of is Eelektross for Electricon and I think that’s already taken. Think I’ll go with Uma for the Angel monster and Leech for the Eel.

The biggest change, though, comes in Count Aquis. I’ll give more details later, but the long story short of it is that he’s looking for Melody. We don’t know this at first, instead having him vaguely saying “where is she” and giving the wrong memo that he meant Ariel. The group is successful in sacking a town and capturing mermaids. They leave the mermen and other sea creatures be. Upon seeing Triton, he has it out for him and tries to kill him, only for Flounder to take the blow.

Flounder retreats to the surface to warn Ariel of her impending danger while Triton faces Aquis off, leaving his fate unknown. Melody’s interactions with Samuel stays the same. Scuttle comes by later that night to deliver an injured Flounder who warns that there’s a terrible threat in the ocean that’s looking for Ariel. The first conclusion they reach is that it’s someone with a connection to Ursula, given the last person who gave them trouble was her sister, but Flounder gives them a description of the man and even says how his hate seems to know no bounds… He then passes away, signifying that this is serious business. Ariel mourns for her closest friend as Eric and Melody comfort her.

Cut to Aquis, where I don’t change a lot of what happens. I think increase the bickering between Leech and Uma and showcase their characteristics a bit more. I kinda see a Sidorak and Roodaka (from Bionicle) relationship between them where Leech is the brawn who thinks he’s top of the world and Uma is the brains who seeks Aquis’s sole approval, though that’s probably because I recently seen a review of Web of Shadows and thought Roodaka was a cool villain. That or increase the Jindrax/Toxica relation and have them bicker, yes, but still show how much of good friends they are.

Either way, Aquis cares not. He wants Melody no matter what. We also see his sea-mutants, horrific mishmashes of sea creatures (If you played Impossible Creatures, you’ll have some idea of what I mean), and how little he cares of them, as he eats a shrimp-jellyfish hybrid right in front of Leech and Uma to emphasize what kind of punishment they would receive should they fail him. They go on their way as Aquis looks at the amulet he has… and cries.

As before, Melody’s interactions with Samuel are the same, but Samuel’s discussion about his master is changed. Instead, he reveals that he was adopted by a person and is considered to be a father to him. Basically, he doesn’t have the “used to be a street rat until Aquis found me and paid me to do his dirty work”. This adds a little more mystery to who the “Surface Agent” is. Another thing to note is that Samuel was orphaned as a baby in a shipwreck and, eerily enough, he’s about a year or so older than Melody, which causes the people who’ve seen the Little Mermaid to go “ooooooooh nooooo…”

Instead of coming across Leech and Uma, Samuel comes across a new person: Professor Aquarius, his adoptive father. At first, Samuel is excited about the new girl he met and how he’s in love. Aquarius seems to be proud of him until he says that her name is Melody. Aquarius then scowls, but doesn’t say anything. Last thing he wants is to invoke Romeo and Juliet on his son. Instead, he encourages him to keep hanging out with Melody, even giving him a pat on the back, which turns out to be a leech-dolphin hybrid that latches onto the nape of his neck and emits sonar for him to sense.

To confirm who he is, Aquarius feels his skin drying up as he gasps for air. He then runs to an already filled tub and slams his head into it, his face shedding any human features in trade for the more ferocious looking face of Count Aquis. The next chapter opens with Aquis returning to his lair, with Uma asking if he managed to find the girl. He says yes, but they need to wait for the right time. Uma asks if Aquis loves the surface so much that he would abandon his mission. She sings a song to the tune of the Reversed Song of Healing (The notes will be reversed, meaning it’d be preformed without the song actually going backwards, if that makes sense) that reminds him of years gone by.

At this same time, this is where we get the info dump on who Professor Aquarius was from Eric, who learned of him when he was a kid. While Aquarius was denounced as a madman for concluding his research in intelligent life in the sea with “there’s mermaids!”, he managed to hook up with an idealist whose mind was wide open and they went sailing in search for the mermaids, vowing to find a way to live underwater so that drowning wouldn’t be a fate.

However, as Eric says how they disappeared off the face of the earth, the song becomes a harsh, oceanic operetta where we see a flashback to Aquarius and his wife, who is holding a newly born baby, braving through a storm. Flashes of lightning shows a silhouette of a figure emerging from the water with a strong glow. Then, lightning hits the ship, destroying it and separating Aquarius from his wife and daughter. We see the wife land, only to see the mast fall on top of her (with that traditional Disney cut away to show Aquarius’s reaction). The baby ends up being swept in the sea as Aquarius falls ever deeper in the midnight sea…

It then cuts to Aquis’s crying face as he wipes his tears. Uma lets Aquis mourn in peace and solidify his feelings for revenge. She then goes to Leech, who is annoyed and asks “how much longer do we need to put up with that crybaby?” To which she responds: “patience, he’ll get what we need soon enough and then…”, and, as a cruel call back, she too eats a shrimp-jellyfish to show what she means. They then hear metal break and they go to investigate it.

Eric decides to break the tension by asking Melody how the date went, much to her embarrassment. However, before they could discuss any further, they hear a cry for help and immediately go despite the clear warning against going into the sea. There, they see a woman trying to escape the clutches of Leech and Uma. Ariel and Melody manage to get them away, with Sebastian having in on the action.

“Dat one’z for Flounda, ye beeches!” as he snips on Leech’s tail.

They rescue the woman and bring her to safety. They find out her name is Atta and that she was imprisoned with members of a resistance force who had been fighting Aquis for twenty years. She explains more about who Aquis is and why he didn’t intervene during Little Mermaids 1, 2, 3, and the show (long story short, the resistance kept Aquis busy and his goals would conflict with the Octo-sisters and Marina anyways), and also tells Ariel that Triton’s alive and is recovering at her place. Ariel wants to go, but Eric tries to stop her, saying that they barely made it out of fighting Leech and Uma alive and that it would be safer if they remained on dry land.

Melody, however, insists. Samuel gets involved as well, and he joins the party. Instead of a pill that turns Eric and Samuel into the N64 Zora, it’d be a magic amulet that Triton had been crafting ever since Melody destroyed the wall and reunited humanity with mermanity. Atta leads them to the resistance HQ known as Sanctuary and red flags blare up when she insists no one tell anyone where it is.

Triton and Ariel reunite, though not without bringing up how Flounder died. Triton is a bit remorseful, but we don’t know why. Likewise, Samuel looks to be intimidated by Triton’s presence, something that Melody notices. She just assumes it’s because Triton has a six pack or some other silly reason. Triton then explains what he knows of Aquis, or rather, his master, Oceanus.

Oceanus was a Titan who dueled with Triton’s father, Poseidon and the battle rendered the seas blood red (hence the Red Sea) and they had no means to defeat Oceanus. So, they used a planetary alignment of every planet up to Saturn to open up a gate to Tartarus and seal Oceanus up. Keen-eyed viewers will note that the bars have been broken and they had to fix it, reflecting how this took place after Hercules.

As far as Triton’s concerned, Oceanus is still sealed up, but he has an idea on who Aquis is… He says that he might be Oceanus’s prophet. Someone who lives only to serve Oceanus. Later on, Melody and Samuel chat and while Samuel doesn’t say much, what he does say solidifies their love for each other. As Melody goes to talk with her parents, Uma and Leech tell him that he needs to break the barrier. As Samuel refuses, the leech begins to dig deep into his neck and the blood begins to attract sharks. Uma reveals through this that she’s the one who is able to mutate the creatures to be hybrids. Leech wraps himself around Samuel and tells him flat out that if he doesn’t do as they say, he’s dead.

Samuel is forced to go to his chagrin. Meanwhile, Atta talks with Ariel about the struggles of being a mother, to which Atta replies that she has no family, or any memory of one. All she does is serve the resistance. Up to the betrayal, it plays out normally. The only change would be Samuel trying to say why he was afraid of Triton, only for Aquis emerges to capture Melody. She begs Samuel to help her, but Samuel frowns.

“You did well, son.” Aquis pats Samuel on the back and tells Melody that he was the one who rescued him from the storm. When Melody asks if he’s lying, Samuel confirms, then grips his fists.

“This was all… for what your grandfather took from me that night!” Samuel said as Melody is knocked unconscious. She then wakes up in a cell where Samuel sees her as they have a rather sad duet about how Samuel could never be part of any world, not because he backstabs people, but because he does it out of the hatred in his heart. Out of spite. The sad thing is, he’s painfully aware of it and knows that what he has to do next will destroy his bond with Melody: avenge his parents by killing Triton.

Back at the Sanctuary, it gets invaded by Leech and Uma in an attempt to crush them. They succeed and take them prisoner, including Ariel and co. Samuel awaits in a chamber with Aquis and asks why they must harm Melody. Aquis then explains how Melody is a product of true love and that destroying it would cause even the cosmos to despair and lend its energy to Oceanus. Samuel frowns before Aquis reminds him that Triton brought this onto himself.

Because Eric is captured too, we cut a large chunk out that I felt was unneeded. So, Eric wakes up with the rest as Aquis comes in. This is the first time he sees Aquis. He also sees Melody on an altar and puts two and two together, demanding that Aquis lets her go and even offering to take her place. Aquis wants none of this and seaweeds his mouth shut. He then explains that he’ll sacrifice Melody to Oceanus and destroy the entire sea level. Eric bites through the seaweed and demands to know who Aquis is.

Aquis takes off his mask as we see a gillman version of Aquarius with pointed teeth. They all retch at his form, even Samuel, as he explains that he would have died during the storm if it wasn’t for Oceanus offering a helping hand. In trade for servitude, Oceanus would give him the means to conduct revenge. He then forces Triton to confess. Triton frowns and we get another view of that operetta where we see the man with the glowing power was actually Triton.

Ariel wonders why he would do such a thing, to which Triton confessed that he was grieving for Athena, his wife, and wanted revenge and so killed any humans who would dare swim over Alantica. He mellowed out when Ariel met Eric, obviously, but that’s when Samuel calls him out. This is the first time Eric and Ariel see Samuel on the villain’s side, but as soon as he brings up his pain, they understand.

“ADMIT IT! YOU KILLED MY PARENTS TOO! YOUR XENOPHOBIC FERVOR RUINED MY LIFE!” Samuel cries out.

“… Yes… I did it. It’s all my fault. I’m the reason your parents are killed… Please, if it satisfies you… Kill me instead. Oceanus would be pleased to know the blood of Poseidon’s only son will sate his thirst than a granddaughter.” He accepts his fate…

But Aquis wants none of it. He tells Samuel to kill Melody and let her blood attract Oceanus out of prison while the eclipse is about to begin. Samuel looks over Melody, who defiantly stares at him, as though goading him to do it. Samuel cries and says “I’m sorry”…

Before impaling Aquis with his dagger. He says that he’ll take up Triton’s offer and frees Melody. Melody, however, attacks Samuel and the two struggle over the dagger. Ariel is moved to tears at seeing what would have been lovers driven to try and kill each other. We’re not gonna make it too violent, just grabbing each other and tussling around.

Uma and Leech come in to Aquis’s aid, or rather, to kill the mermen (and Eric), but as soon as Uma sees Ariel, she takes the time to gloat about how her happily ever after will be a happily never after. Melody warns Ariel of her mutant controlling powers and Eric manages to deck her in the face. Triton recognizes Uma’s witchery and calls her out for learning under Ursula. Uma laughs… Ursula isn’t her teacher. She’s her mother.

Eric’s like “let me guess, you want revenge too?”, but then she laughs. She never knew her mother personally and in order to have hate, you would need to know what love is. She only wants to bring Oceanus back so that she can do what her family failed to do long ago: rule the ocean. While this is going on, Melody gets the upper hand and holds the dagger over Samuel’s neck… She struggles… then drops the dagger and cries. She doesn’t want to kill her first love. She lets Samuel go after tossing the dagger away and Samuel has no idea what to do…

He then sees Uma approach the trident that had been locked up and takes it for herself, smiling at the fact that she’ll be the third member of her family to wield the power to shape the oceans as she sees fit… As she uses it to cause lightning storms, Samuel has flashbacks to when he was a baby. His family was caught in a rough storm and one thing he remembers was a large silhouette of a creature with many tendrils holding the Trident.

Those same tendrils emerge from Uma as she uses the Trident. He began to draw his conclusion and, in a rage, tackles Uma to the ground, knocking her and causing the Trident to hit Leech. Leech has a dumb muscle moment where he goes “I don’t feel so good…” before fading away. Uma sees Leech disappear and is distraught. She then glares at Samuel and tries to kill him, only for his fist to punch her face.

“YOU DID IT?! DIDN’T YOU!? YOU KILLED MY PARENTS!” Samuel shouted. Melody pulls him away as Uma gets up. Now she’s lusting for revenge. Aquis, however, gets up and is armed with the Trident. Samuel quickly breaks the group out and now we get a free-for-all, but, without the trident, they can’t win. Atta gets close to killing him… But then notices something familiar. She remembers a man over her crib, singing a lullaby version of Under The Sea. The man? Aquarius.

“Dad?” She asks. Aquarius is confused… She then recites the song. Sebastian just gives the dude the stink eye and goes “dood, ya reep aff mah sheet, mon?” Aquarius remembers his own daughter and holds her tightly. Atta then remembers what happened that night. As she sank to the ocean, Triton managed to save her life and, believing her life would be better off as a mermaid, turned her into one.

Aquarius is both mad and glad at Triton for saving his daughter. He had no idea how to react… Nor will he have the chance as Uma claws into Aquarius.

“You took away the one thing I cherished in this cesspool of an ocean… Now… I take away your lives!” She then causes him to bleed profusely, the blood being used to summon Oceanus. Oceanus takes over the body of Aquis and he has a tentaclelike aura kinda like Ashitaka’s arm from Princess Mononoke, just to emphasize the theme of hate. And, like before, Oceanus eats Uma to boost his powers.

The final battle commences like normal, except that Aquarius’s actions are “be a monster”. Samuel and Melody manage to impale the possessed Aquis and, as Oceanus began to retreat, Triton zaps him with the Trident, rendering the weakened Titan into nothing but sea foam. The oceans are returned to normal.

The final chapter is where things are completely different. Aquarius lays dying from his wound. Triton approaches Aquarius and apologizes for his crimes. Aquarius smiles and says how he managed to do good in his xenophobic rage… He then pleads to Triton to take care of Atta for him before he dies. Atta grieves for her father, but doesn’t let it turn into rage. She instead asks Triton to make her a human so that she could live where her father once lived, to be a part of his world.

He complies, makes her human, and then goes to Samuel, who feels conflicted with the whole ordeal, asking Triton what actually happened that night. Triton mentions Uma’s mother, Ursula, and how she terrorized the ocean for a brief while. As far as he was concerned, the ship he was on was completely wrecked and there were no survivors. When he said it was his fault, he refers to how she managed to get the Trident in the first place: through manipulating Ariel who had been criminally neglected. Samuel looks over to Aquarius and mourns him, saying how he was a father when he had none and now that he’s gone, there’s nothing left to look forward to.

Atta offers a home with her, saying they’ll pick up the pieces together. Samuel jumps on the offer, then goes to Melody, apologizing for the betrayal and nearly killing her grandfather. She does the one thing he has no idea how to react to: She forgives him. She forgives Aquis. And like that, the cycle of revenge ends… But… For someone who all their life had knew nothing but hate of the sea… That’s not enough.

He apologizes to Melody, but even though he’s forgiven by her, he still can’t forgive himself, especially with his feelings towards Triton not going away any time soon. So, he departs with Atta, much to Melody’s sadness, but the overall note is that, once he’s gotten over himself, he’ll reunite with her, as we see a year later where he return to Melody, a better man now.

We end with the two sharing a kiss as we zoom out to the ocean, ending the Little Mermaid 4: Hate of the Sea and the overall moral being that revenge is a painful cycle and it only ends with forgiveness.

The first day of school was stressful just because of all the talk of class fees that your scholarship didn’t particularly pay for. Your group of friends waited for you as you made a call to your cousin asking if they had shifts for you to pick up at the family restaurant.

Making your way back to the group as they started walking with you. They were on scholarship to this school as well but, you were the poorest of the group. Being the goofs they were they were playfully horsing around. While you were quiet. 

You felt a hand on your shoulder and Jaemin’s voice manifested directing itself at you, “What did your cousin say?”

“Oh,” You covered his hand in yours, “She’s picking me up to talk to my uncle about it?”

Haechan’s voice interrupted the small moment with the mentioning of someone else, “Chunja looks like she changed a bit over the summer. You going to slide up on her?” 

“Who says that?” Renjun squinted at the unarguably most wild of the bunch.

“I do, No fun Renjun.” Haechan raised his fist to pretend to hit Renjun but, instead, he nudged Jaemin.

Jaemin rubbed his neck,” I dunno maybe. You think she’d be into me?”

Your heart barely had time to swell in an odd feeling when the whole group slowed down. You didn’t have much of a choice because of your position in the middle of the group but, to stop as you heard the speeding of a car pass the group with hooping and hollering. 

You looked at Mark as he mumbled, “God. They’re such asses. Rich kids...”

The group continued their own conversations even causing Chenle’s dolphin laugh ring out among the group.

You squeezed through to stand next to him, “Don’t you hang out with them sometimes?”

He nodded in response, “That’s only because my uncle has money and makes his stepson take me with him so my mom feels like I’m assimilating fine.”

“Look at you! Using big words! Sounding all educated.” You laughed at him and he gave you a big brother seeming smile. 

They always dropped you off at your house first then Jaemin as he lived right next to you. This time you took notice of your cousin’s car in the driveway along with your mother’s.

“Movie night at Mark- Hyung’s on Saturday!” Jisung reminded you.

“Jisung, it’s Monday. What are you gonna do? Remind her every day?” Jeno teased as they left. 

You walked inside greeting your siblings, who excitedly talked about the first day back from break, and mother, who always took the first day of school off of work.

“Jiwoo is waiting for you in your room. We’ll talk about your day when you get back.” Your mom winked at you as she continued listening to your young sister.

“Yes, ma’am.” You nodded at her and walked to your room.

After years of saving up and asking for certain decorations for your birthday or even creating some of them, including a wobbly desk that served as a reminder of why you and the “Dream Team” shouldn’t be anywhere near Woodworking class or power tools in general. One thing that wasn’t apart of your room was your cousin who was lounging on your with two big bags set on the floor.

“What did you bring me?” You asked, tossing your bag in your desk chair.

“Well, hello to you too,” Jiwoo chuckled and wobbled on her knees to the edge of the bed, “I figured that since the girls at my college really liked you from your visit, they wanted to add on to this set of hand me downs. They even gave you old jewelry and shoes. Those are in my car. Although it seems lame that you’re wearing others clothes and stuff.”

You smiled as you looked through the clothes, “Are you kidding me? These are all so pretty and nice!”

“Yeah. They’re nice but, you deserve clothes you bought not preowned.” She told you with sadness laced in her voice.

“That’s why I work hard now, Ji... Tell them I said thank you,” You gave her a big smile as you held up a crop top and a pair of jeans, “For now, let’s try on this cute outfit.”

You sat with Jiwoo and ate ice cream that she leaves in the freezer just in case she has to stay in the restaurant late. You both eat ice cream out of the tub and talk.

“Today, on the way home Haechan was talking to Jaemin about Chunja,” You started scooping out a spoonful of ice cream.

“And this is significant why?” Jiwoo asked, sipping her drink.

“First off, Jaemin is my best friend and he has never, ever, said anything about this girl to me.” You put the spoon in your mouth.

“Is sweet little Y/N jealous?” Jiwoo teased.

You rolled your eyes, “No, I’m not jealous. Just worried. Chunja is one of the most popular girls in school and I think she’s-”

You dragged your eyes to look at a group of boys who started to wave you over. 

“Those kids go to your school?” Jiwoo asked looking over.

“Yeah. They’re Flushes.” You told her standing.

“Flushes?” She asked tilting her head. She grew up rather middle class so some slang she just hasn’t heard.

“Shitty rich people.” You told her before walking over to the table.

You knew of all of them. You knew Lucas fairly well. He hung out with you and The Dreamies every now and then. He was a cool person and fit right in but, he only hung out with the group if his rich friends. He did tell you when he hung out with his friends if you or anyone in the group saw him call him Yukhei.

“Hey, Yukhei!” You gave him a fist bump and a wink.

“Hey, beautiful. I’ve got a few questions for you.” He told you with his ‘playboy’ voice.

“Anything for you.” You nudged him.

“What are you doing here?” Lucas smiled.

“I hope your hoodrat friends aren’t here,” Taeyong muttered before being hit by Jaehyun.  Taeyong was known for his distaste for the scholarships. He would go out of his way not to be associated with any of them except Mark.

“My family owns this place.” You answered ignoring the comment and the assault of Taeyong.

“They do?” Jaehyun inquired seemingly interested. You had a few classes with Jaehyun but, you never really talked because you had at least one member from your group in your classes. But, this year he has two classes with you. One filled with his friends and another with you and two of your friends.

You nodded and looked at Yukhei, “Next question. “

“That ice cream you had looked really good... Do they sell it here?”

“No, sorry.” You chuckled and rubbed on your neck.

“See I told you,” Jungwoo hit Yukhei’s shoulder then looked at you, “Yukhei’s is wrong about most things.”

Jaehyun spoke up,” He was right about one thing.”

“Oh? What was that?” You asked playing along.

“You definitely are beautiful,” Jaehyun took your hand gently, “We’re having a party this Saturday. I would love for you to come.”

You looked around before leaning toward the center and beckoning them to lean, “I’m sure you wouldn’t want a hoodrat messing up your party. Plus, I’ve got better things to do than hang out with a bunch of Flushes.”

Before any of them could respond you did a full 180 and waved them goodbye, “Bye, boys. Don’t forget to tip your waitress. I know you’ve got the cash.”

You slid into the office where your uncle usually counted money at night and where the security footage was collected. He told you to wait in there while he finished some things up. Jiwoo was seated on the table and started clapping as you slipped in.

“I have no idea what you did but, they tipped Ms.Kim fifty dollars,” Jiwoo smirked at you,” One of them left you his number.”

“Toss it.” You told her.

“Y/N... He’s a rich kid. Maybe his your way out.”

“He’s a Flush and I’m my own way out.” You couldn’t continue because your uncle came in.

“Y/N, I can’t give you any shifts.”

Your heart dropped, “I need the money...” You were willing to do anything. You worked hard to make sure you were helping your mom out in any way. As long as her and your siblings were taken care of you would work every minute you weren’t in school.

He held out a stack of bills,” That’s why I’m handing it to you. Y/N, you work so hard for everything you have so now it’s time for us to let you relax. You’re still a kid. You aren’t an adult you shouldn’t work like one. Just maintain good grades and get out of the lower class and I’ll help take care of you.”

Your eyes began to water before tears quickly made their way down your chin before you hugged the old man with as much strength as you could muster, “Thank you so much.”

Little did any of you know that the blessing to relax would come at the cost of teenage drama.

That night you were putting your new clothes, shoes, and jewelry away while playing music. There was a knock on your window. You jerked your head towards the window and saw a smiling Jaemin at your window. This was a frequent occurrence that started in middle school. When Mark wanted to hold a group meeting or Jaemin just wanted to come over.

You unlocked the window and slid it open, “Are you staying or are we going?”

“We’re going. Put a jacket and some shoes on.”

“Yes, sir.” You pulled a pair of shoes on and a jacket before taking Jaemin’s hand and climbing out the window and on to the raggedy old roof. From there you climbed down the tree by your house that connected your backyards.

You both dusted your hands off and stuffed your hands in your pockets. You two didn’t really talk. There were a few reasons for that.

A group of voices and smell of distant weed was one of those reasons. Instinctively Jaemin yanked your hood to cover your head and then covered his. He brought you into his side and shielded you. 

The group watched you two walked by. They used to be your friends. You grew up with them but, ever since your group got scholarships to the “rich kid school” they felt like your group was trying to become “Flushes”. Although that wasn’t the case.

Another reason was keeping quiet until you got to the rest of the group as it was in your best interest not to get caught as rumors spread fast in a school full of snobby kids who are all watching all the time. Looking for reasons to justify the want in the separation of both groups.

The meeting place was at the picnic table by the swings in the park. Jaemin hopped the fence and you followed suit. 

The smell of pizza caused you to run to the spot and grab a slice of pizza. 

“Hello to you too,” Chenle commented and you lovingly leaned on him.

With a mouthful of pizza, you asked,” Who’s to thank for feed yours truly?”

Mark raised his hand and you blew him a kiss.

“What’s the meeting about, great leader?” Jaemin asked in a joking manner.

“It’s about Saturday,” He leaned on the pole,” Johnny, my uncle’s stepson, invited us to a party this Saturday.”

“Okay... Did you say no?” Jeno asked eating some pizza.

“I told them we’d be there.” Mark sighed at the chorus of groans.

“Saturday is for the boys plus, Y/N not a bunch of rich kids we don’t like.” Jisung voiced.

“For once in his very young life, Jisung is very right.” You spoke up.

“Guys, this is our chance to befriend the rich kids. Show them that we aren’t that bad. So, Saturday, I want you in your best party clothes. I want you guys to show those Flushes how we ‘hoodrats’  get down.” Mark got his leadership voice and you raised your hand.

“We can meet up at my place since it takes me the longest to get ready.” You offered.

“I’ll take my dad’s van and pick everyone up,” Jeno suggested.

“Sounds good,” Mark nodded, “Y/N, did your uncle give you any shifts?”

“He told me to stop working like an adult and to relax then handed me money for class fees “ 

Haechan smiled at you, ”Thank Goodness. Now we don’t have to hang out at the restaurant when you work. What are we gonna do with all this time with our favorite girl?”

“Get through the party with the rich kids,” Jaemin answered.

Jalil Goes Hang-Gliding -- chapter 1

Me and @foxruz were having a really weird conversation one time where we accidentally came up with this ridiculous story plot involving Jalil accidentally going hang-gliding, and so uh... I eventually wrote it. It’s completely ridiculous please don’t take this seriously. And the name of the fic is a lie, it’s equally about both Kubdel siblings, but the most important thing is JALIL GOING HANG-GLIDING AND BEING AWESOME AT IT

Oh and it’s on AO3 as well, T-rated for crackiness and gen as heck because I love friendship

Relatives were so annoying.

Well okay, not all relatives. Big brothers were fine. Everyone else though? Annoying. Why were they always coming over to visit? All they did was walk into the house and immediately judge it if it wasn’t completely spotless, then drink seven cups of tea and eat all the snacks while talking loudly about boring stuff that didn’t matter, and not leave until at least two hours after they had said they would. And the absolutely worst thing was the invasive, annoying questions.

“How’s your school going?” was not too awful. That could be dealt with. It wasn’t like Alix was failing or anything. Though it was unfair that school seemed to be one of the only things annoying relatives cared about when it came to teenagers. Not “what’s your favourite hobby” or “what sort of movies are you into”, no, they always had to ask about boring, stressful stuff. As if academic success was all that mattered.

“Do you know yet what sort of job you want?” That question was much worse. How the heck was she supposed to know? At the moment her honest answer was still “a super awesome rock star” and she was sure that would not go down well. Why was stuff like that all adults cared about?

And the worst question of all.

“Do you have a boyfriend yet?”

Ew. As if. And even if she did, it was none of their business. But no one seemed to take no for an answer.

“Oh come on, there must be someone! You’re such a pretty girl, I bet you’re a real heartbreaker! Are you sure you’re not just hiding it? Who’s the lucky guy?”

Oh dear god, it was like they wanted her to have a boyfriend, despite always telling her to “focus on her studies” and “not get distracted by peer pressure”. Like they wanted an excuse to tell her off, but they wanted her to be “normal”.

They would totally flip their lids if they knew she was aromantic.

It wasn’t like she hadn’t tried telling them. It was just that no one had believed her. “Oh honey, you’re too young to say that!” “You just haven’t found the right guy yet!” “You’re just trying to be a rebel – it’s okay! You don’t have to make stuff up to sound edgy!”

And that would firmly be the end of the conversation. If she ever tried to bring it up again, her dad would glare at her until she stopped talking. It was so unfair. How could she get them to believe her? Or at least stop pestering her? Maybe they were right, maybe in the future she would change, but for now their constant badgering was just annoying as hell. Surely there had to be some way to convince everyone that getting a boyfriend was not necessarily a good thing?

The answer arrived unexpectedly, right after the last day of school had ended for the summer holidays, and from the oddest source possible – Lê Chiến Kim. He quickly ran after her just as she was leaving.

“Alix, I need your help with something!” he said. “But it’s top secret. You can’t tell anyone.”

She hadn’t expected Kim to be asking her for help, of all people, but whatever. “What is it?”

“You’re aro ace, right?”

“Yeah.”

“So like… if someone hypothetically came out to you as bi, then you would be okay with it, right?”

“Yep.”

“And if that same person, hypothetically, was a guy who had recently got a boyfriend but can’t tell anyone because he’s not ready to come out to everyone yet… but he accidentally let slip that he was dating someone and now everyone wants to know who it is…”

“If you’re telling me that you’re bi and have a boyfriend then good for you,” Alix said, trying to sound as if she cared at least a little bit.

“Yeah, okay fine, it is me. And the boyfriend is Max. But uh… can I ask a favour?”

“That depends on what it is.”

“Well… um…” Kim was fiddling around with the strings on his hoodie, looking rather uncomfortable. “I kinda need someone to cover for Max. ‘Cause everyone wants to know who it is I’m dating, and no one will stop asking me.”

Oh, so that was why everyone had been crowding around Kim today? Maybe Alix should have actually paid some attention to what had been going on at school, rather than daydreaming about her new Nintendo Switch all day.

“And I asked Marinette first,” Kim continued, “but she said she doesn’t want to pretend to be my girlfriend, since she doesn’t want Adrien to think she’s unavailable. And I don’t know who else to ask, since I don’t really know how accepting anyone would be, except for you… so um… would you like… pretend to… y’know… just for like 2 days or something! And then we could fake break-up or whatever, it’s fine, just until all the attention dies down…”

“So you want me to pretend to be your girlfriend while you secretly date Max,” Alix said, a plan forming in her head.

“Yeah, pretty much. I know it’s stupid, thinking isn’t my strong point. Please don’t punch me.”

Thinking wasn’t his strong point? That was true. And could also work to her advantage.

“Of course I’m not gonna punch you, I’m not a monster,” she said. “And I accept your plan. With a few conditions.”

“Oh, okay!”

“First things first, your one-sided rivalry with me ends here. I’ve been trying to make friends with you for ages, you idiot.”

“Wait really? Same!”

“Then you’re very bad at it.”

“But so are you…”

“Okay, fine.” That was true. Friendship was not something she had a lot of. Or any at all, really. “And the other thing – we’re gonna use this as an excuse to annoy my family as much as possible.”

“Um… why?”

“They’re always telling me I should get a boyfriend, even though I said I don’t want one. So if I pretend to have a really reckless, irresponsible boyfriend who is really bad for me? Maybe then they’ll shut up.”

Kim frowned. “Are you calling me reckless and irresponsible?”

“Yes.”

“Well… I don’t know exactly what that means, but I’m gonna take it as a compliment.”

Oh thank goodness. Finally someone her bluntness didn’t offend. Hopefully he would be a good choice of friend after all.

“Listen here, Kim,” she said. “We are going to do our best to stress out my dad as much as we can. You have to try to make him hate you. If he does, the rest of my annoying extended relatives will follow suit. And then they’ll tell me to dump you and never try to pressure me into getting a boyfriend ever again.”

Kim’s frown turned into a grin. “I’m an expert at getting people to hate me! This is gonna be so much fun!”

“Exactly. And in the meantime, I won’t tell anyone about your secret boyfriend.”

“Yes! Thanks!”

He held his hand out for a fist bump, and she happily obliged.

Jalil knew something was up immediately. He knew his little sister very well, better than anyone else did. So when she brought that annoying panther-challenging kid round for lunch, he could tell that something did not add up within just a few seconds.

“So,” said their father, “how did you two get together?”

“Well we were at the zoo–”

“–and there was an akuma attack–”

Jalil was one of the few people who could tell when Alix was lying. She didn’t lie often, she usually was very brutal with the truth. But she was lying right now for sure.

“Hm, that’s nice,” said their father, barely listening. “I’m glad at least one of my children is growing up to be what I expected of them.”

Ugh, this again? Jalil always tried so hard to be what his father expected of him. It wasn’t his fault that he was gay, with a homophobic dad who tried so hard to pretend not to be. No wonder every relative within a 50-kilometre range was so adamant that surely, surely Alix wasn’t aro ace. At least one of the kids had to be straight. Right?

“And Kim got like three detentions yesterday,” Alix said.

“Four, actually,” Kim added.

“Yeah. He punched someone in the face. And didn’t do his homework.”

“And did a backflip down the stairs.”

“Um… yeah. That too.”

“Very good,” said the father, still barely listening.

“And he also sells crack. Loads of it.”

“Yeah,” said Kim. “I’m super rich. I sold like seven tonnes just this morning.”

“And he sells… uh… weed. And cocaine. And tobacco. And heroin. And lots of alcohol. And… like… ethylcarbomethanolnitrogen. Isn’t that right, sweetie?”

“Absolutely!” Kim gave a big thumbs up.

Mr Kubdel just chuckled. “Good, good…”

“Um no, not good!” Jalil said, slamming his hand down on the table. “That’s actually pretty bad!”

“Don’t worry Jalil, I know what I’m doing,” Alix said, giving him a very pointed look.

“You’d better be joking about the drug smuggling.”

“Of course I’m not joking! Would I ever lie to you? Anyway, we have to go now.” She stood up and grabbed the side of Kim’s hoodie, pulling him up too.

“Where are you going?”

“We’re gonna go hang-gliding off the Eiffel Tower. It was totally Kim’s idea. He is such a good influence on me.”

“Wait no, you can’t just go h–”

The two idiots had already sped off out of the door before he could finish his sentence. He turned to his father.

“And you’re just going to let them?”

Mr Kubdel sighed. “Jalil, stop trying to interfere in your sister’s life.”

“But she’s going to jump off the Eiffel Tower! She could die!”

“It’s alright, she has Kim with her.”

“Ah yes, the drug smuggler. Thank goodness a sensible, responsible guy like him is there looking out for her. It’s not like they’re both going to die or anything. I’m going after them.”

“Jalil, you have chores to do!”

But Jalil himself could be speedy too sometimes. He walked out of the door without another word.

The first thing he did was rush to the nearest hang-gliding store and buy himself a hang-glider and helmet. He then had a quick read of a few WikiHow articles. Then he made his way to the top of the Eiffel Tower with his new equipment and leapt off.

For a few moments he forgot entirely why he was up here. For starters, he had never seen Paris from this view before. It was marvellous! Was this what it felt like to be a bird? Was this what it was like for Ladybug and Chat Noir, soaring freely over the rooftops of this magnificent city?

He had already been flying for several minutes before he remembered his objective. Find Alix. And that other guy. But mostly Alix.

Jalil had a look around, but all he could see in the skies were pigeons are aeroplanes. No other hang-gliders around here. Surely she couldn’t already be dead? He looked down at the ground to see if he could spot any tragic accidents, and…

Wait, was that her??? Alive and well???

It certainly was. She was somewhere near the Trocadero, chatting with what looked from here like Kim and Max. And there was no hang-gliding equipment in sight. He had flown up here for nothing.

“CURSE YOU ALIX!” he called from his lonely vantage point up in the air, knowing she wouldn’t be able to hear him. A few seconds later, however, she had clearly spotted him since she started waving. The other two turned and starting waving too. Then nearby pedestrians started waving, watching Jalil’s flight.

Well, this was embarrassing. It was probably best to just land as quick as possible. He started going into a descent, noticing as he did so that someone on the ground had got their phone out and started recording him. Not just anyone – it was that one kid who he had tried to sacrifice when he was akumatized! The one who ran the Ladyblog! Oh man, was she going to put the video on her blog? He had to land as soon as he could!

But his glider, conspiring with the air currents, had other ideas. He was pushed back upwards again, then down, then up, going along in a rather bumpy wave. It was almost possible to hear the onlookers gasping at his perilous antics. He dared to look down and saw that a crowd had formed. Oh great. Now there were going to be loads of people to watch his painful death.

The air currents buffeted him around some more, pushing the nose of his glider up so high that all he could see was blue sky stretching away into the void. And then, with a jolt that went right through his guts, the glider flipped over completely. For a few terrifying seconds he was flying upside down.

And then it flipped again, righting itself. The crowd below him was cheering. Did they think he had done it on purpose? In any case, he began trying to descend again… and then thought better of it.

That flip… it had been kind of fun. Dangerous, sure, but exhilarating. No wonder people liked extreme sports if this was what it felt like. He let the air currents pull him along again. Over the next several minutes the glider pulled off several more stunts, and Jalil was figuring out how to control it a little better. Every turn was better than the last. It was just like being a bird – being able to perform all sorts of acrobatics in the air, without gravity having to end it!

He eventually landed in a space the crowd had left for him, all applauding him wildly. As soon as he was safe and settled he was swarmed by people congratulating him and telling him what a great job he had done. Was this what it was like to be a celebrity?

“Hey Jalil!” Alya called, waving her phone at him. “Can I put this video up online?”

“Please do!” he said.

“Neat! This is gonna get so many views!”

She disappeared back into the crowd. Jalil tried to make his way out so that he could go home again, only to suddenly be tackle-hugged by the little sister whose fault this was in the first place.

“That was AWESOME!” Alix said, beaming at him. “I never knew you were so good at hang-gliding!”

“Neither did I,” Jalil admitted. “But I was only doing it to take care of you! What were you doing on the ground?”

“I wasn’t really gonna go hang-gliding, I was just saying that so that dad would pay proper attention…”

“So the drug smuggling wasn’t real either?”

“Nah, that was a joke. If anyone in the class sells drugs, it’s Ivan. But I don’t think even he does.”

So if she had been joking about the drugs and joking about the hang-gliding, then was she even telling the truth about anything at all? He was just about to ask her when he was tapped on the shoulder by someone. Turning around, he saw the familiar face of news reporter Nadja Chamack, holding up a microphone at him. A cameraman was close behind.

“Jalil Kubdel, could you tell us a little about this flight of yours that has captured the interest of the nation?”

An interview? This was so cool! And he wasn’t even akumatized this time!

“I would love to,” he said.

“Excellent! So, have you ever been hang-gliding before?”

“No, this was my first time.”

“And yet you performed so many expert stunts! Wow, you really are a natural! Have you thought about entering the Paris Hang-Gliding Competition?”

The what?

“No, I didn’t know that was a thing.”

“It takes place in three weeks. Do you think you’d be interested in participating? Apparently there’s a large cash prize for the winner.”

Cash! That was something he needed more of. His family were rich, of course, but he was pretty sure he had been written out of the will. Just some of the woes of being gay.

“Oh, I will definitely be participating,” he said.

“Good to hear it!”

The interview carried on in a more generic manner, with Nadja asking him about his life in general, whether anyone else in his family liked hang-gliding, that sort of thing. He hadn’t expected to be any good at interviews but to his surprise, it just all came naturally. Perhaps hang-gliding had lifted his spirits more than he thought it would.
