Time span of She-Ra: the case of General Sunder

So as I was saying, the Christmas Special says She-Ra Season 1 took place over less than a year. In one of those episodes, 53 “Unexpected Ally”, we meet General Sunder, a Horde military commander who gets fed up with Hordak after decades of service and defects to the Rebellion.

He even breaks his leg rappelling out of the Fright Zone and is cared for Mally, a young woman he half-heartedly arrested earlier.

Where things get interesting is that there’s a Season 2 episode called “Return of the General” where THREE YEARS have passed and Sunder and Mally have a two-year-old daughter.

Bright Moon and Queen Angella feature prominently in this episode, meaning the Rebellion and Hordak have been locked in a status quo of attrition for at least 3 1/2 years.

So Adora has been living in a tent in Whispering Woods for that long because her dad is evil, with her closest friends and neighbors being Madame Razz, Kowl, Bow and Princess Glimmer. She’s gotten to know them all much better than her long-lost brother. Three unseen birthdays/Christmases happened.

Try to put yourself in Adora’s head here. How likely is it that she’s EVER going to move into a royal palace on another planet? Even if she can bring herself to do what it takes to get rid of Hordak, Horde Prime will just send another Commander, which is the implied threat to Hordak of Inspector Darkney’s existence anyway.  Even if she forced the Horde to retreat from Etheria, how long would it take to erect permanent defenses that stable successor governments would maintain? And even then, is she going to leave her closest friends developed over years that she barely knew her birth parents or pressure them to make new homes on Eternia?

A few years after the defeat of Skeletor and Hordak, evil snake people's king Hiss gathered an army of Wizards and Lizards to attack the lands of Eternia and Etheria. He Man and She Ra joined forces once again and got the help of several of their allies in order to fight the threat that the snake people and their allies represented. At the end of the war Prince Adam and Princess Adora merged their beings with the powers of Grayskull and Crystal Castle and became He Man and She Ra permanently. Everyone throughout all the kingdoms learned at last their secret identities, but there was no choice but to do so since it was the only way to defeat Hiss and his army of wizards and lizards. The war was not without a heavy price, King Randor and Queen Marlena perished, which meant that Adam-He Man was the rightful heir to the throne of Eternia. However, with a broken heart, he decided to exile himself, which is why Princess Adora-She Ra became the Queen of Eternia during her brother's absence. Twenty years would come to pass so the world would have news about He Man once again... He-Man and She-Ra Power Tour

The lore from the Power Tour, the Masters of the Universe stage show that toured the US and Canada from autumn 1986 to some time in ‘87, was wild.

They brought out an Eternian bard named Songster to sing about the origins of the main characters (well, most of them: not Teela, Orko or any of Skeletor’s henchmen). What does an Eternian bard look like?

It’s the eiiiiiightiiiiiies! Do a lot of coke and vote for Keldor Miroson!

His first song was about Eternia before Castle Grayskull. The planet was ruled by five good wizards. They had to keep fighting the disorganized Snake Men, who “lacked but one thing: a leader to lead them! Then one day he appeared! Hordak!”

(What, were you expecting King Hiss? Maybe the five good wizards are the Ancients who banished him right before this story.)

So they fought a war, and the evil forces were defeated. Hordak retreated to another world with some of his Snake Men, swearing that he would one day return and get his revenge.

“Knowing that Hordak would indeed return,” the five ruling wizards decided not to die natural deaths but rather sacrifice themselves setting up a system containing all their power/the power at the Heart of Eternia/the Starseed/whatever.

“ULTIMATE SACRIFICE!”

They transmuted their bodies into the walls of Castle Grayskull! The first Sorceress appeared, to protect the Power Sword.

Fast forward to the time of King Randor. The astronaut Marlena crashes on Eternia. They fall in love, get married and have twins.

Then Hordak returns! Baby Adora is stolen from the nursery and Prince Adam grows up being told that Eternia’s peace and freedom is all up to him. We see him as a young man being trained by Man-At-Arms.

Now here’s an interesting divergence from any other ‘80s version of Hordak’s story: rather than “Skeletor betrayed me many years ago!” or “Hordak abandoned me when the Queen and Man-At-Arms subdued me in the nursery”, the stage presents a diptych where Hordak continues teaching Skeletor while MAA teaches Adam. Skeletor is an apt pupil, while Adam is a complete failure. The Sorceress appears behind him to sing inspiration. But it seems to be of no avail, and even when Hordak’s forces invade Eternia, Adam whines “Father I can’t!”, to which Randor says “Then Eternia is lost” as the royal parents and Duncan go out to fight. But eventually the Sorceress inspires Adam with confidence and he summons the Power of Grayskull through the Sword.

Duncan doesn’t recognize He-Man as Adam, and they briefly fight until he identifies himself as the Prince, not one of Hordak’s champions. They fight Snake Men, then Hordak says “Let’s see if you can face a REAL warrior!” ... the performer playing She-Ra! Grown Adora puts up a better fight than a Snake Man but is still knocked down by the Power of Grayskull. The Sorceress has to tell He-Man not to slay her, for she is his sister. Shamefaced, He-Man splits the sword in two, one half being the Sword of Protection. Adora powers up by the Honor of Grayskull, and that is how He-Man and She-Ra came to be!

That’s all the lore. The show then moved on to silliness like Skeletor challenging the twins to Good vs Evil on roller skates and such.

Three years have passed since the end of the war in Eternia and Etheria and the deaths of both Skeletor and Hordak... During this time, the kingdom of Eternia has had some peace and has prospered, while Etheria has had its first breath of freedom in decades. But a new threat is at hand... King Hiss, lord of the Snake People has amassed an army and has joined forces with the evil wizards from all the lands. Even former Skeletor allies like Evil Lyn and Kobra Kahn have joined him, as well as shady characters such as Count Marzo, Magera, Mortella, Nazgul, the Dragon Lady, Kor, Zilora nd even the witch Shokoti (whom everyone thought she was dead), the peace is coming to an end. This will be known as the "Wizards and Lizards War", and it will be an event in which the world will once again require the help of He Man, She Ra and the powers of Grayskull and Crystal Castle. The war was fierce, and Hiss proved to be a formidable opponent, the prices to pay will be high, and several allies of the forces of good will sacrifice their lives, such as Duncan, Castaspella, Stratos, Buzz Off, Madame Razz, Spinirella, King Randor, Queen Marlena, among others... However, at the end of the day the evil forces were once again defeated. King Hiss perished in the last assault, and his son, the young (yet evil) prince was betrayed by Evil Lyn when he found out that she had triplets with Skeletor, and she was forced to kill him to protect her kids from the snake people. A long time ago, the world of Eternia was ruled by benevolent King Miro and his wife Queen Elena. Peace in the kingdom was constant for years thanks to the rulers' wisdom and the help of Primus and his wife Sorceress Veena, whom were under the guidance of the great Goddess. The Goddess revealed the powers of Grayskull to Primus, making him King Grayskull, and Veena became the protector of its mystical secrets for years. Right around the time in which King Miro and Queen Elena's son, Prince Randor met Marlena Glenn, a traveler from another planet and fell in love with her, which ended up in a marriage, a new evil threat fell upon Eternia... Now, with the help of cosmic enforcer Zodac, loyal lieutenant Duncan, and the royal army of Eternia, they must all join forces to fight against the evil forces of Hordak and his apprentice Keldor. Little do they know that even though they ended up being victorious, the royal family would have to pay a high price in which they would lose one of their twins, Princess Adora, who was taken by Hordak to the land of Etheria when she was just a toddler. After Adora's disappearance, King Miro would abdicate the throne of Eternia, making his son the new king while he exiled for years looking for his long lost granddaughter.
