“Get The Fuck Outta Here” by Local News Legend (2020)

This video rose from the ashes of a completely different concept/project that we've currently got on the shelf. And it almost didn't happen at all due to our busy schedules! Emily and I got on the phone the day before shooting this, and laid the groundwork for what this became. The only way we were able to have time to film it was if I woke up at 10am on a day I wasn't working, which was the worst thing ever.

Knowing we were working with limited resources, we worked with what we had- a house and friends to be in a video. After playing around with a few different shooting styles, I thought it looked most interesting to have minimal movement with the camera trucking left or right. It almost made her looks like a wax figure in some shots. This combined with her (wrongly) going household chores and a desaturated color, juxtaposed with bright happy shots of the band playing a show- made for not a bad music video considering all the scrambling we did to make it happen!

“Toothache” by Apes of the State (2020)

With any of my videos, there is never a direct route to the concept, and that remains true with this one. I originally wanted to do a music video for this song because it provided a lot of good imagery to work with for visuals. I was thinking things like candy and bright lights. Outside of that, nothing was  really coming to us organically. Less than a month before I was rolling through Lancaster to film, I got the idea to do a video with 2 Aprils, kinda acting as a follow up to the last music video we did together in which April summoned an evil version of herself and tortured it with a Voodoo doll.

This music video would be April having to live with the new evil version of herself. I've filmed a little bit with dual people before, such as in the aforementioned Apes video, and a video with Matt Pless. A primary piece of reference I used was that Netflix show Living With Myself, in which Paul Rudd plays his character and his character's clone. We borrowed a lot of shot ideas from that show, and if you watch the last episode of that season, you will be able to see our exact points of reference.

“Except For The Fact That It Isn’t” by Jeffrey Lewis (2019)

The B-Movie of life, set to a stomping distortion pedal workout. With bass solo (and beatdown) from Mem Pahl: “It's a fairly listenable four-chord ditty with verses and choruses, but then there's also some ripped-up guitar devastation… it's kind of upbeat and jaunty but then it's got the most brutally sad line of the whole album… it’s mostly about what is undeniably good and real and insufficient.”

"Anthrax Shirt” by Adult School (2019)

I had been chasing after Nick to do a video for one of his projects for a while now. We were able to align our schedules on the 3rd time as I hit the Bay area to see some friends and work on other projects too. We went through a couple ideas and concepts, but the band arrived at this one as a final pitch. I took to it immediately because it seemed like a fun, open ended concept shot in a way I hadn't shot any of my other videos before.

"The Internet Song” by Apes of the State (2019)

April approached me to do a lyric video for them. I had my hands super full at the time so I was only a little into the idea. Then I got the idea, oh hey what if I just make it all in an IM conversation?? That’ll be fun and easy and only take a few hours.

I got through the first verse and figured since it mentioned Facebook, I’ll put it in a Facebook status! And once I did that, the flood gates were opened and I knew I had to make a web page for each verse. April would occasionally get a message from me like “hey do you mind if I use this facebook photo of you from 11 years ago,” and had no idea what was going on. The Windows XP intro/closing were the last bits added, everything else was made in order. It took me about 5 days of on/off work and I’m super stoked about how it came out!

“Plate Glass Apology” by Apes of the State (2018)

Absolutely one of my favorite videos I’ve made so far. I was able to combine so many elements to convey what we wanted. Dramatic lighting, fun and smooth camera movement, production design, and a story with a twist.

The one thing in this video that doesn’t speak for itself is the reveal at the end when April takes off the mask. That was stolen shot for shot from the “And Then There Was Shawn” episode of Boy Meets World. Good artists borrow... great artists steal. Is that the saying? Enjoy.
