Ray stepped back, watching the others train. With Marco’s guidance the group really was thriving.
There was Ray himself, his control and range of powers much improved since his time under Bancroft's influence.
Marco, the department head, had opened up more over time himself. The umbrakinetic had relaxed more and learned to actually enjoy things more instead of only viewing everything he could do as a tool for work.
Shigeru Ueda dropped in regularly from L.E.N.S, both to help train Hailey officially now she was a teenager and to check in on his priest friend who joined in from time to time.
Nic Martin was the odd one out, as the only regular member of the group who did not have any sort of powers. But he was great at drawing out potential with his pep talks and careful studying to see where strengths were.
Ray’s cousin Cassie was there occasionally both to help keep an eye on Hailey and because as well as being a SHIELD linguist, she was officially training with the medical department as a nurse too.
There were also two new recruits, both new to SHIELD.
One, Ray had stepped in as the primary trainer for. Although classed as ‘mutant’ instead of ‘Inhuman’, Ray had volunteered both because he and Hailey had rescued him from hostile civilians and because the young man’s abilities needed special care. Dylan had demonstrated his ability to both absorb and discharge energy, which he did not have full control over yet. While he wasn't as afraid as Ray had once been about physical contact, the empath wanted to make sure he didn't head down that path.
The other new member was a little older. He was a tall, muscled Hawaiian who had an interesting ability to create different effects from drawings and symbols. Iokua had explained it didn't work with living things -he could not bring drawings of creatures or people to life- but he could create things like wind from a rune symbol or quick drawing of a wind shape. He had even already tattooed his most used symbols on his arms and hand before SHIELD had picked him up. He already had some martial arts training and could fight fairly well with a wooden staff; apparently he had spent years LARPing and developed the skills for fun.
He and Marco didn't seem to get along that great. It was actually Nic who connected with Iokua, who apparently actually enjoyed the agent's sense of humour.
Owen wasn't feeling great that morning, so he was sitting aside and watching, occasionally creating a barrier between two people when a power seemed to go the wrong way or was bigger than intended to protect everyone. That in itself had helped the priest strengthen the barriers and learn to form them faster.
During their current session, there was a point where Shigeru was working with Hailey and suddenly dropped to his knees, coughing and gasping for air. Very quickly, Owen got to his feet, a protective bubble surrounding Shigeru. The priest hurried over, a pained expression as he crouched beside the tech expert the only sign of his own issues as he went to check on his friend.
“I'm sorry!” Hailey said. “I'm not sure what I did, I just-”
Everyone else had stopped their training, Ray and Marco quickly joining them, though they found themselves unable to enter the barrier. Ray stepped over to Hailey, gently projecting calm as he took Hailey’s hands.
“It's alright, it was an accident,” he said softly. “Just relax and focus, we can fix it.”
Hailey nodded and closed her eyes, shoulders relaxing as her father's calm took effect. She focused, carefully studying the air around them as Shigeru had taught her. “I can't tell past the barrier-”
She looked over at Owen. “Father, please let the barrier go?”
The priest nodded and dissolved the bubble with a wave of a hand, anxiously watching Hailey to see if she could fix it.
It didn't take long before she gasped, putting her hands to her mouth. “Oops, I think I-” she shook her head, focusing on fixing the problem before wasting precious time explaining.
Shigeru seemed to relax after a moment, suddenly able to breathe clearly again. He shifted position to sit with his legs stretched out, slumping tiredly against Owen beside him as he caught his breath.
“Impressive little one,” he eventually said. “Removing the oxygen is not a trick I am able to do myself.” He could sense the change in the air however, even if he hadn't been able to fix it himself.
“I will be very interested to see how else we can use your skills,” Marco said to Hailey.
Ray nodded in agreement before quietly praising his daughter’s quick fix of her mistake.

Once he'd woken up, there was a lot of protesting and stubbornness until Shigeru agreed to help Owen sort out moving from the hospital he'd taken the priest to. He hadn't known Owen's history, but it happened to be the hospital Owen had originally been turned away by some of the doctors at and he didn't want to stay there and risk it happening again.
Seeing as Shigeru absolutely refused to let him just return to the rectory he lived in, Owen had at least decided to try to contact the 'Inhuman specialist' he knew from SHIELD to see if he was able to help in any way. Turns out he could. Ray managed to pull some strings and got permission to at least get Owen assessed by SHIELD medical, seeing as he had powers (and Ray may or may not have …firmly pointed out that if Owen were to get too stressed at a public hospital, SHIELD might have to go sort out a public use of powers issue later on). It helped that Ray had already been working with the priest to help him understand his abilities and try to uncover some of his background.
Ray had also sent someone to check if Grayson was working, or at least available once he'd heard Owen knew him and the young man was familiar with the priest's discomfort surrounding medical treatment.
He was surprised when he entered the room, both at seeing Shigeru of all people sitting in a chair and at seeing the usually calm and cheerful priest lying on the bed, pale and clearly uncomfortable.

A whooping 10 this time!
1. @harttoheart - We've only just begun to interact but the mun is wonderful as I've already said. I'm intrigued by her muses and I'm looking forward to learning more! And I think you all will too 😊 I will also say I'm already beginning to adore Julia :3 No doubts that others will too!!
2. @diicktective - We've not written together much but her presence on my dash brings me joy! Swift amuses me so much. When I pass him by on the dash it's the same vibe as those 30 min laugh shows, including the side of feels. Also I don't hold much conversation with the mun but I just love her quirky ooc updates when we're blessed with them ❤ So yeah, highly recommend!!
Honestly I shouldn't have started writing these cuz I've run out of energy lol But all the love to the rest. I recommend them all 😊💖

“Ueda, got it,” he said, mimicking the pronunciation. He was used to international liaisons from all over the world- and he made a point to do his best to pronounce names correctly. The way he was taught with that first meeting.
“Yeah, Tony Stark,” he added with a little smile. “Sorry if I started you, not many people are awake and wandering this time of night. At least, not here. I’m waiting on a fabrication to be finished before I leave myself, but I’m not used to SHIELD’s tech. Way too slow.”
He stuffed his hands into his pockets. “So what is it you do that’s got you working with SHIELD?”
[ AWAKE ]: the sender, unable to sleep, gets up to go for a walk, and finds that the receiver is also unable to sleep. -Shigeru (accidental first meeting of the techies?)
“hey-” tony said gently, trying not to startle the zombie-lookin’ agent. “fresh coffee in the pot over there. not barton’s; i wanna stay awake, not fight an army by myself. help yourself... agent.... your last name escapes me, shigeru, right? i’m terrible with last names, i hate them. always way too formal to use just last names.
“oh, but don’t use the red and black mug. that one’s natasha’s. even thor knows better than to envoke her coffee-mug wrath.”

Charis nodded her approval as the other woman foot her foot down safely. She looked around before gesturing over towards where a barrier was being set up on the far side of the pattern.
“At least a metre, thank you. Oh, you know metres, right?” Her tone wasn’t exactly polite, more like ‘busy and not in the mood’.
“I totally know metres.” Thera resisted the urge to emphasise her own accent as a way of saying ‘British, here’ but ... well, aside from a bit rude, that wasn’t always something to brag about. Instead she took the appropriate step and a half back, hooking her thumbs into her belt loops to give her hands something to do.
For a moment she watched the other woman work, then started casting around, looking at the ground around the one-metre perimeter. “Any idea who it was?”

Someone they fear
"I could go the obvious route and say God here. But if you're expecting an answer involving a physical person... I am a bit wary of that red-headed woman that Mister Ueda works with. She doesn't seem to quite grasp the seriousness of some topics she raises and is a bit hot-headed. I wouldn't say I'm exactly afraid of her, but of the damage she could cause without even being aware of it."
3. Someone they miss
"Most recently, Father Nathaniel. I'm tired of being on leave and away from the church and my friend."
5. Someone they've forgiven
"Collectively, all the parishioners who believed the ridiculous rumours about me before I revealed I am unwell. They should know better than to judge and gossip."

6. Someone they feel dislikes them
"Well I feel one of those people is Agent Ellis, the one Hartell works under. He often seems in a standoff-ish mood when I am training with Hartell and the others, especially after he realised my light banishes his shadows so effectively."
12. Someone who taught them a valuable lesson
"That man...the one who had the gun in the church. Sorry, I have his card somewhere, but I forgot his name. He reminded me why it's so important to show compassion and help even those who seem bad. Many of them can still change and be redeemed, if you give them the chance."
13. Someone they have conflicted feelings about
"Ah well that would be Mister Ueda. He- Shigeru is a good friend but he is also frustrating. I know he still isn't fluent with English, but I do wish he would say what he means sometimes and stop being so... so vague."

“So, how long are you away for?”
Owen looked up from the warm tea in his hands with a sheepish smile before he responded.
“To be honest Shigeru, I'm not sure,” he said quietly. “It's been a few weeks already and I miss being at the church and all, but… at the same time, I don't quite feel ready to return yet.”
Shigeru frowned disapprovingly. “You have been away that long?”
“Yes, it was just before Easter, once I was out of hospital-”
“So where have you been staying since then?” Shigeru interrupted to ask.
“At a hotel.”
“At a-”
It was likely he swore, but as it was done in Japanese, Owen couldn't be certain. Shigeru got up from his chair and started pacing, muttering either to himself or the ai in his glasses in the foreign language. After a short time he stopped and turned back to look at the priest.
“You were just out of hospital and you went to stay alone where no one knows to keep an eye on you?!” Shigeru asked irritably. “No offense, but that seems incredibly stupid. You are lucky nothing happened!”
Owen sat there, stunned. “I- Where else would I stay?” He asked after a silence.
“With friends.”
“I can't stay with Father Nathaniel, he lives at the rectory too.”
Shigeru cursed in his native language again. “Are we not friends? You could have asked me! You can see for yourself right now there is plenty of room for guests.”
“I didn't want to be a bother…” Owen mumbled, looking away from him.
Shigeru sighed deeply, then sat back in his dining chair opposite Owen. “It would not be a bother,” he said gently, concern clear on his face. “It does bother me however not knowing if you are okay.”
Owen looked across the table at him, studying the man’s expression briefly before looking back down at his tea, drinking some to try and hide his own expression.
Why did he feel so flustered? Because his friend wanted to help and Owen was used to being the one helping? Because Shigeru seemed so worried about him? That was what friends generally did wasn't it?
Oh wait, Shigeru was still waiting for a response.
“Er… thank you,” Owen mumbled. “For the offer. And the concern.”
The tech expert had an expression on his face that Owen couldn't quite identify. Was it perhaps disappointed?
It disappeared quickly though before Owen could think much on it.
“So you will be a guest here instead of alone in a hotel?” Shigeru asked.
Owen nodded. “Yes. Thank you.”

What do you think of Shigeru?
"I... think he's a good friend. Very polite.
And very intelligent. I can barely work a smart phone and he's out there bulding both the phone and the program for them."

[ PERSON ] tell me about Hailey's mum.
"Charis- Or Madelyn as I knew her...
She's bloody smart. Loves to work, sometimes a bit too much, but to be fair, 99% of SHIELD seem to be that way too.
I really like the hair colour. Not a fan of her new, shorter hairstyle.
She appreciated art and encouraged my photography, less so with the Private Investigation.
She liked to go out to parties and fancy gatherings.
Uh... but she could be very project focused and self absorbed so she often wasn't there when I needed her."

If Shigeru had been intending on playing vigilante that night, he would have been more prepared. All he had wanted to do was go for his pre-bedtime jog in his track pants, t-shirt and hoodie. No katana or his usual vigilante outfit. But he couldn’t stand by as someone down the street was being mugged.
Damn it.
He pulled his hood up before going to intervene, putting a hand on the guy’s arm.
“I think …you should leave the lady alone,” he said, accent making it clear English was not his first language.
@callmeaegis
“Oh!” Aegis looked surprised. She had arrived on the other side of the mugging as Shigeru carefully clutching what looked to be a metal bo staff. “Oh, did you want this one? By all means, sir.” She offered politely, gesturing to the mugger as though the situation wasn’t dangerous in the least.
“Ma’am, if you would, please.” She motioned for the woman being mugged to step behind her.
Contrary to her usual black ninja costume, Aegis had invested in a white hooded cowl that she was very proud of. Gave her a very cyberpunk look even if the rest of her outfit seemed like normal clothing. It had a hood to obscure her hair and a face mask to hide her mouth and nose. It was perfect and a great start to what she hoped would be a full costume someday.

Grayson had been finishing up his last class of the day when he’d gotten a call from the medical office at Shield. Initially he’d missed the call, in the midst of chatting with one of his professors, but once he’d stepped outside he’d checked his voicemails and immediately called them back to let them know he was heading over.
He’d planned on volunteering later that afternoon anyways, just maybe after a snack. Oh well, he could grab a pudding or something at the office. The young man hustled a little faster towards a nearby clearing, setting his suit-pack down and stepping into the armour a moment later. Why drive in New York traffic when he could fly and get places in a fraction of the time?
Landing on Shield’s roof, he stepped out of the suit and was in medical in moments. What had happened? Had Owen had another dizzy spell? Or was there another reason behind his trip to the medical centre?
“Hey,” He greeted Ray, Owen and an unfamiliar man with a little wave, an empathetic glance cast Owen’s way as he stepped up beside his bed. The medical student immediately took in his pallor skin tone, discomfort evident in his features. “Nice to see you, though I’d have hoped it would be in better circumstances. Do you want to talk about what happened?”
